I heard this today on BBC Radio 2 - it's an absolute classic that doesn't get the credit it deserves. I'm sure the vocals are live on this version as well. Great singer
BD is a wonderful singer but she is miming here! TOTP made her sing live when she performed her earlier hits like Answer Me and Another Suitcase but the policy had changed by 1980 and she mimed - very well - on TOTP from then on to Caravans, I Know Him So Well etc
This is why I love youtube - have a half-remembered song in your head for 42 years and then you find it. Such great memories of being a youngster in 1980
Im 50 years old drive a big hairy arsed crane for a living yet I still can't seem to stop singing this song throughout the working day am I having mental issues or just love great music.(I also have been known to sing Marti Webb songs)
Barbera is still a class act and still going strong. The song’s harmonies remind me of Cliff Richard’s “We don’t talk any more” Both written by the same guy.
Few are. It's a snowballing industry - well a snowballing species that consumes its products - by which I mean that popularity begets popularity and a select lucky few are propelled into great fame and wealth and a great many just as good, well, don't and aren't "discovered".
I think Barbara has had a decent career but yes especially today music is very generic and what I see as very mediocre artists have achieved meteoric success where there is undoubtedly far greater talent that goes unnoticed. Music should be joy in itself and genuine musicians love performing and making music whether to large crowds or small. Most of the musicians of Barbara’s time started out doing small gigs and worked their asses off before fame. Now people think they can get it almost instantly via X Factor style shows and social media.
Oh how I love this song, it makes me happy, it makes me sad. What happened to all those happy and free spirited days. Miss you mom and dad, wish you were around so that I can play this for you.
Fabulous song. Not one that I’d have taken much notice of at the time during the two tone era. But now stirs up memories of me returning from my paper round and getting ready for school whilst this played on a transistor radio in the kitchen.
Great voice, love a bit of fab Babs. I could only ever remember the January February part of the chorus, so just used to sing the remaining months for the rest lol.

Brilliant song! You can tell it was produced by the guy who did Cliff's "We Don't Talk Anymore", it sounds very similar. What are those lovely chords called where the bass plays the major third above the root?
So, maybe those pitchbended synth pads in this song and in "We don't talk anymore" came out of the same machine? :-) No idea if this special bass constellation has a special name. But it definitely creates tension and dynamic. I think I recognize this specialty also in the chorus of Pink Floyd's "Us and them" - such a simple and yet so powerful idea :-)
@@Norbertmoe ah it has to be the same synth defo, and parts of the song kind of sound like WDTA reshuffled (in a good way) but that bass trick is a masterstroke. And - I won't hear otherwise - that's Gerry Rafferty singing backing vocals.
@@Norbertmoe fully agree and another song you can hear it in is 10cc's I'm Not In Love. Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart deliberately went over the chord progressions to find counterpoint melodies with bass, or using guitar and piano to create hybrid chords when the two instruments played together. If you listen to GG playing the song on an acoustic guitar, you hear only 'half' the chords or even a third when the bass is doing something different again. They wanted to create that internal tension and to make familar song structures subtly different. This from an interview with Eric Stewart on the making of the song.

I put this on as it reminds me of dreary overcast days listening to Radio 1 in 1980😄

After all those years still a lovely song 💖💖💖
This a lovely song by a great singer. Cannot believe this only got to number 11 in the UK in 1980! Should have been a number 1.

Both songs are very similar indeed because of Alan Tarney
Dont forget More than I Can say by Leo Sayer.
As well as Tarney's own version of Cathy's Clown.
I could be wrong but I'm sure it's the same type of Keyboard used in both songs
@howardadams9103 You are correct, the same keyboard was used on both songs, this and Cliff's "We don't talk anymore" it's a Polymoog 203a.
This song and caravan got me hooked on Barbara and I've followed her ever since. She has never let me down. Love her
Fabulous singer never given the credit she deserved

What do you think about 'Mary Roos' singing the song 'Wenn ich dich nicht halten kann'? - A version from this song.
She’s not Dead!
Wow. Fab to hear this again. I was in the Barbara Dickson fan club in the 1980s
Great song from my childhood as my Mother loved Barbara's music.
My first single, i still adore her
One of my favorite 80' songs. Ohh I miss those days .😢

Alan tarney produced this the same record producer as cliff Richard 1980s records
It does sound like a song Cliff would have sung, glad to see Barbara recorded it, a top version.
