Listened to this in 1984 driving with Dad in his new car from Denmark to Hoek v Holland and then through England all the way to Scotland. Drinking Scotch with Scots in Inverness going to Loch Ness to get a glimpse of Nessie but instead saw a Piper in full outfit pacing the stonewall playing. Then south to Exeter and back home. Always comes to me when listening to this what a great voyage it was. RIP Dad.

A beautiful song by Mike - and rendered perfectly by Maggie's amazing voice - about the doomed escape attempts of Mary Queen of Scots as she tried to get to France.
I read about her life years ago...here's a strange story. I was visiting the ruins of a house where she was kept under house arrest for a while; my mum got quite upset, and she said that the rooms were 'too small' and she felt claustrophobic. Before we left I bought a guide book...it told that Mary had actually complained about how tiny the rooms of her 'prison' were. Still gives me the willies.
Yep...she had been married as a teen to François II (I think), a French King of ours, pretty sweet...but the boy died of an awful ear abcess. She was then brought back to England where her cousin, Elizabeth, feared that Mary's links to France - where she was super popular - could threaten her Kingdom. The worst is that she actually must have prayed the Lord she could get back to beautiful France... The final break, as Maggie Reily just sings "Never going to...." (without the final words) stands for her inner toughts, cut by the axe falling on her neck as she was behaded (in the most botched possible way). This song is a jewel. A painting, a movie, a novel...a jewel

believe me.... i am searching for this 30 years ! !! ! at last i found it again couple of minutes back ,My body is shivering(I am from India). I am a part time musician too.I have a lot of sentiments & nostalgia with this song. Thank you internet . Thank god.
The playback on the TV shows in the eighties, with unplugged guitars, electric guitars sounding like acoustic and the art of miming is just hillarious! Great artists thou!
When song lyrics were about good stories, tales and imagination, instead about flaming others or exaggerating one's very own selfish nature. When music was done by actual musicians and not by producers in backdoor studios! Love it!
I often wondered if old style musicians did it simply because they were good at it. As if "someone has to do the job. I can, ergo I have to!" was their decision process of going into business with music! Much of modern music seems to only aim at success. At least the popular stuff. I am extremely happy that our technological advances enable us to delve into the past of music!
@@notjustforme True words. In fact earlier pop music was far more independent than today, because there were many small labels with which to cooperate. Today almost all artisans are bound to major labels only. And of course those major labels need to make a lot of money to compensate their huge expenses. So when producing, they only aim at success, refraining from experimenting with less popular music styles. That leads to an absurd uniformity within most billboard charts all around the world, with no room for originality and creativity, which might endanger success.
@@bjornm.1121 Record labels aren't that important anymore. Oldfield's early success was basically Branson (= Virgin Records) making an educated guess. Then TB struck a chord in millions of people and the rest is, as they say, history. Oldfield's entire career actually mirrors the development of the record industry as a whole. Today, the big labels are just businesses desperately trying to earn money from the next big hype. But they've lost the real fight a long time ago. Since the popularity of music isn't linked to physical distribution anymore, other mechanisms took over. It's basically about attention nowadays. But there's still plenty of great music out there. And there still are lots of small labels willing to put their trust into real artists. The corporate record industry always sucked. The 50s, 80s, 10s... it doesn't matter. Music matters.
One of the most beautiful songs of those years and enjoyable even today, a pop song with a credible folk dress to take us back to the days of Mary Stuart, wonderful
There's a beautiful syncretism between rock and Renaissance music. The lyrics are wonderfully subtle, metaphorical, and ambiguous. They may evoke an unfortunate English party of the War of the 100 Years or Mary Stuart's destiny. Everything about this song and its performance with Maggie Reilly is wonderful.
this song reminds me of a very specific moment in my life. I was a kid playing with my little cousins during summer vacations in Normandy. And this song was on the radio. I don't know why, but that, day, this afternoon, this moment and this song got printed in my memory. Everytime I hear it, I am back to this very day and very sweet memory
Had a teenage girl friend from France and listened to this over and over till i got there in early 89. Alas it was not to be. She was and is a wonderful memory though…this song brings me back to her all the time.
It's good that you enjoy the 80's music, but please stop telling us that you're in your 20's and that you're listening to it. We get it, you want to tell us that you have better tastes than other people from your generation but the shitty era of today is what it is, it's not going to change a thing. So just listen to all these gems while waiting for the end of times like the rest of us, they're not coming back, hence the nostalgia even for peeps who weren't there back then. Cheers guys.
All of this, the music, the singing are very beautiful.. and sad. I also will never get to "France" , but I seek happiness being able to leave my home or on a cool autumn evening I can look at the stars from a pier over the lake.

No hiding place when performing live (?) but this is spot on
heard this on the radio today for the first time and had to look it up. what a magical voice. such a beautiful song!
You´re welcome, young innocent kid! :-/
On the radio? The world is not lost yet!
Woe that be brilliant if only Radio had brains and research and find re define, rare gems of any genre Songs like this and plenty of more around the world and in history, books, charts etc and play this instead of the same boring jubebox stuff in their short playlists
Same here , it was on bbc radio 2 , I recognised it as a remix of this used to play at a local rave I used to go to lol heard this and actually love this more , can’t find the rave version tho lol
Finally found it. Grew up listening to this but couldn't remember where I'd heard it. My Dad was a huge fan of Mike Oldfield and had Tubular Bells. I remember the music but that album cover had a huge effect on me as a kid.
Thanks Dad for exposing me to such incredible music.
I got the same feeling. Was amazing reading your message. Was like going out from my heart too.
Está canción me recuerda a viejos tiempos. Amigos que ya no están. Un abrazo desde España para vosotros.
i was 12 years old in 84, and i still feel chill and cold waves go through from my body, this is so lovely track i still love that one like 30 years ago
dito ... 1972 here.
believe me.... i am searching for this 30 years ! !! ! at last i found it again couple of minutes back ,My body is shivering(I am from India).
I am a part time musician too.I have a lot of sentiments & nostalgia with this song. Thank you internet .
Thank god.
I born in 87... But I have cold wawes on my skin every time I listen this music. Brilliant. Best ages till 20s.
1972 too, I heard the song around the same time. taken by the magic of it since then...
I was 19
The playback on the TV shows in the eighties, with unplugged guitars, electric guitars sounding like acoustic and the art of miming is just hillarious!
The lyrics was inspired by the unhappy life of Mary Queen of Scots.
Unfortunately you can't stop the change.
Mike,- you have always caressed my dancing heart. U feel me with youre beautiful music. Thank you. With love Anita.
Mike Oldfield - like a genius, Maggie Reilly - like a great voice, To France - like a great music! Back to the 80´s forever!!!
One of the most beautiful songs of those years and enjoyable even today, a pop song with a credible folk dress to take us back to the days of Mary Stuart, wonderful
👍🎸♥️🇫🇷
lovely
I'm in love with this song.
Mike and Maggie collaborations were fantastic!
perfektná skladba a krásny ženský hlas . Pozdravujeme zo Slovenska.
Brilliant
Virtuoz Mike Oldfield se neoposluchá asi nikdy.Maggie Rielly je úžasná.
So I’ve just discovered this song on my Spotify and there’s something so amazing, so adventurous and alluring about the vocals. I love it.

Cette chanson est indémodable. Je peux l'écouter en boucle.
My kingdom for singers without autotune!
One of the most beautiful songs in the world...
I love this song but I want to get to France.
All of this, the music, the singing are very beautiful.. and sad. I also will never get to "France" , but I seek happiness being able to leave my home or on a cool autumn evening I can look at the stars from a pier over the lake.
Cos takiego nigdy sie juz nie powtorzy. Niesamowita muza, niesamowity glos. Zawsze wracaja mi przy tym najpiekniejsze wspomnienia
Jak dzisiaj pamiętam: parking koło Olsztyna, wakacje 1984 i ten utwór w radiu 🛣️🏕️📻

Possibly the best voice I've ever heard,so beautiful
I can't begin to describe how soaked in Nostalgia this track is. For me.
Man this is music! I grew up listening to this song in a room full a records and a piano . Our favorite songs are refuges we run to when we can´t take it anymore. This song was one of my refuges, thank you Mike and Maggie!!!
Yes a Brilliant song was and is one of my favourites too. Oh I love the lead guitar solo, and Maggies vocals just Gorgeous!!!
All the very best to you.
And world peace.

Mike Oldfield doesnt get the recognition he deserves !
Mike Oldfield can play around 50 musical instruments. A true musical genious. In many of his recordings, his drummer was Phil Collins!
Wunderbares Lied, wundervolle Stimme ❤
very nice! How can it be that the voice of this incredible woman is hitting every note? Very Very nice!
Amazing voice Maggie Reilly . Incredible guitar play by Mike Oldfield and Phil Spalding.
They come back to me memories of childhood. PODZIĘKOWANIA Z POLSKI
Is Spalding the gay looking one ? 🤔🙂
I love this song so much. I can't get enough of it.
