I couldn't believe it the first time I realized that fighting was actually permitted in this game.. Still can't quite believe it..
Can somebody explain to me why there are fights at all? I mean, why are they allowed?
It's technically not allowed. That's why there's a 5 minute penalty assessed. But, it's one of those things that needs to happen so dirty playing is answered for.
The refs wait until they get on the floor to stop it.
It depends if the refs know that the players fighting are equal matches they let them fight it out but if oneof them foresay is trying to start a fight with a player with a face cage (i.e. face injury) the ref will stop the fight
Two guys will square off and fight for the sole reason of drumming up excitement in the game. They are not even mad at each other, and will go out for a beer afterward. It's all really just one athlete challenging another
Normal hockey Commentator: "Alright they're going to offense"

@Brandon Harting The "keeping the helmet on" is not to deter the punches, it's to keep your head together when your smack your head into the ice which could happen easily as the video above clearly demonstrates in some of these fights.

players get hurt more often when a ref or linesman step in, sometimes they leave one guy exposed when they grab a hold. Like the old days just let them go never lasts long and fans love it I know I do! Old time hockey!

It's the way it was back in the day. It keeps the cheap shot guys in line. Hockey is the one sport where fighting is a necessary evil.

You missed the excha ge between Delauriea and McDermott while in the penalty box. (sorry for the horrible spelling of names) but McDermott was telling him great fight and stood and applauded him. And De recognized and applauded back in which the fans recognized and clapped also. Just the respect level between the two in an intricate part of hockey.

yeah its even in the rule book. Keeps players from blowing off steam in worse ways like aiming a slapshot at someone, or slashing someone's face. Just gives them a better outlet.

Lots of respect for players offering to take their helmets off. I get it from a player safety/concussion view. But now that visors are required I like the fact that they're willing to man up and go helmetless to avoid the possible cut.
If you take your helmet off with the ref around they'll try to immediately stop it. It's an extra penalty as well I think
The helmet rule is a massive lose-lose scenario either way. On one side, you might fall and concuss yourself of the ice with no helmet, while on the other hand (haha), you can cut your hand and also just have a less effective fight in general with the helmet on. There's really no good way to solve the issue
