Hi there. I successfully installed my EV 860 SSD and now trying to do the OSU updating but I am getting error codes 101 and 106. Question: would it be possible to upgrade the default Xbox One X 2 tb HDD to a 4 tb Samsung 870 QVO 2.5”? Or would I have to use 3rd party programs and scripts in order for it to work?
Xbox officially supports 500GB, 1TB and 2TB HDDs/SSDs. Technically it's possible to install 4TB SSD. All you need to do is put it inside and then install Xbox OS from a USB drive. Your 4TB SSD will be recognized as a 2TB drive. Once done you need to connect your SSD to a PC and extend "UserContent" partition to maximum available space. I never recommend doing it because if you hard reset your console or if there will be a new major update for your console then you may end up with a system crash and then you'll need to repeat the whole process again.
I’ve got one more question: my Xbox One X has a 1 TB HDD, will I have any type of problem installing a 2 TB SSD? Or will I have to use scripts since it has a higher amount of storage?
My xbox was loading the dashboard so slowly... when I looked for a solution it recommended and hard drive change. Found your video, and I'm here to say this worked wonderfully and sped up my console. Thanks
I was under the impression you HAD to partition/format the new external drive with some fancy scripts before installing it or the Xbox would not recognize it and allow an offline system update. Is it really as easy as just taking a new hard drive out of the box and sticking it in the Xbox, then using a USB drive to perform the update. It recognizes it?!?!?!?
@@ElectronicsComputers I have actually never replaced a laptop drive. I actually followed a tutorial to install a SSD in my One X last spring (my HDD was failing). I partitioned and used scripts etc. I was in over my head but it worked. and then the error codes showed up once again about 3 weeks later so I figured it may be more related to thermal paste or something else. So I uninstalled the SSD and use it as an external for my Series X. I now have an opened Xbox One X just WAITING for a new hard drive (worth trying again!), but I was put off by having to do the partition thing again. If I can literally just drop any HDD in out of the box and it will be recognized, I am going to give it another try. I was under the impression it was not even formatted correctly by default, not to mention the partitions being required for the Xbox to accept it. Thank you SO MUCH for your reply!
@@ElectronicsComputers Thank you!!!! Can't wait to try it out and get my One X back online (hopefully). Do you have any insight as to what else could be giving me the error code E101/102(?) related to hard drive errors if the replacement drive does not fix the issue?
So how much does doing this improve load times? I just sold my Series S and went back to a One X, and I'm considering doing this seeing as your instructions are so clear and easy to follow.
Did you need anything else specific in order to do this upgrade, or did you literally purchase the drive and then follow this guide? Was it as straightforward as it looks?

Did you format the new ssd/hdd before installing it?I just downloaded osu1 on USB but haven't formatted my ssd.let me know if I should format a new ssd or just put it in the x1x then run osu1
Thanks for the video, you have the most simplest instructions out all the videos out there. I just upgraded my XBox One X to a Samsung 2TB SSD. I did ran into issues installing OSU1, but I successful in the end maybe from a combination of doing a system erase and shut down on the XBox, and by doing a full NTFS format in the thumb drive (I did not use the "quick format").
Quesrion. You put a 2tb in directly and then used osu1 and it read as 2tb or 1tb? I want to do this but am afraid it will only read as 1tb unless u install scripts etc which I don't want to do lol
@@MarcoS-yd9pf After installing a clean Osu1, my XBox One X read 2TB. After all the format process, it showed 1.7 TB of useable space. I was actually going install a 1TB, cause this was the original size that it came with. However I read multiple posts from the interweb saying that Xbox 1 One X supports a maximum 2TB HDD, so I took a leap of fate. I had trouble installing osu1 at first, but I was able to fix this by using the onboard format and reset options within the Xbox's trouble shooter. Also, my Xbox loss the animation that appears after turning it on, and just goes straight into the Home Screen menu.
@@DaBudaa1 oh weird. I like that boot up logo lol. Hmm. Not sure what to do then. When you say clean install, u mean the one right off Microsoft website right? On the USB flash drive or whatever?

If you simply clone the drive there's no need for any extra movements. Simply replace it and you're good to go. But I always recommend performing clean OS installation for a number of reasons. if it doesn't work for you then simply clone the drive.
Given how the HDD bottleneck isn't with the drive as much as the controller MS chose to use, what kind of speed improvement did you expect and what did you end up actually getting?
Mikey C its a night and day difference. I mean I went from a 5200 RPM HDD to a 1TB SSD. Games load like a PC. Texture pop in seems to have gone away to.
I did this over a year ago with the wd blue 1tb. It almost halved my load and fast travel times. External SSD loads are comparable. Internal SSD makes the dashboard snappy too. I repurposed the old drive as an external. Was worth every penny.
When I did this it worked but when it turned back on I was brought to the profile sign in screen instead of the setup screen does anyone know if this is normal? It all seems to work fine and took the next system update just fine but would it be wise to go ahead and factory reset it just so it’s completely fresh? (Not worried about having to redownloading games or anything as I can move them to a external drive) And should I do that via usb in the recovery menu or would just doing it through the system interface be fine?
Maybe they changed the graphical user interface or something. If the reinstalling games is not a problem then just reset your console to factory defaults. I don't think there will be any problems.
This video was right on I did buy another SSD and installed it into my One X. I tried to clone it via PC, but ran into some issues so I downloaded the Op system and started from scratch. If you plan on doing a Clone it is probably best to use a cloning dock station. I ordered a cheap plastic case to put the old Sata Drive in and will use it as an external drive for extra storage. Upgrade went very smooth and the One X was easy to take a part. I went ahead and cleaned out the dust while I had it taken a part. Thanks 2013Electronics&Computers!

@@rallyscoot Xbox officially support 2Tb drives. So no worries! But if you install larger drive then you may experience some problems (e.g. you have to use some software to partition new drive, you cannot hard reset your console, issues with updates etc).
Your channel is no doubt one of the best if not the most straight up for XBOX tutorials - nice work! Q. if I have an XBOX One X (scorpio edition) with a factory 1TB drive, is it possible to upgrade to a 2TB without scripts/using the exact same method above? You mention at the end of this video that there is no need for scripts when using the same capacity drive, so I'm little unsure.
Thank you for your comment! Xbox officially supports 500Gb, 1TB and 2TB HDD/SSD drives. So you can easily upgrade it without any problems. Never use those scripts because it may get you into some issues with the official updates and you may be unable to perform a hard reset. Moreover, I don't recommend using unknown third-party software.
Thank you for this tutorial! It was very easy to follow and I really was happy with all of the links you included in the description to help with locating the resources you referenced. For any one wondering, I used a Samsung - 870 QVO 2TB Internal SATA III SSD in my Xbox One X and had zero issues. It feels like it cut the initial load times for Red Dead Redemption 2 at least in half.
Thank you replaced the dying drive with a spare 1TB SSD & it's so much faster than it was. I don't know if it's been mentioned, but data recovery software that can clone sector by sector is what worked for me.
IMPORTANT NOTE: if you do not clone your drive, your Minecraft worlds will be lost. Those are NOT backed up to the cloud. Alternatively, you can have a second Xbox One (any kind) on the same home network. On that second Xbox, use the "network transfer" option to copy Minecraft from your first Xbox. This will copy any saved worlds. Then after replacing the HDD in your first Xbox, you can network transfer Minecraft back.
I ran into a issue in this where the xbox wouldn't recognize my NTFS formatted usb thumb stick. I ended up using another and it worked right away. Not sure what the issue was but possibly the Xbox One X is picky with thumbsticks.
Xbox officially supports 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB SSDs/HDDs. Since you're using a non-standard capacity, your SSD was recognized as a 500GB drive. What you need to do now is connect your SSD to a computer and use some software to expand the User Content partition to the maximum available space. Once this is done, your console will be able to use the entire drive capacity.
Thanks for the great video -- couldn't spring for a Series X, but your steps did the job to install Samsung 1Tb 870 EVO SSD -- haven't seen boot times much faster, but game save loads much faster -- appreciate your making it so simple!
If I have a 1TB Western Digital SSD, I can simply install it and run the offline update? I’ve seen users saying they need to take their SSDs back out and hook it up to a computer to free up space. I’m assuming that’s only for 960GB SSDs?
You're right it's only for 960Gb which is not standard capacity and Xbox formats that HDD/SSD as a 500Gb drive. Just put your new SSD into your console and install Xbox OS from a USB drive.
Wish I would have watch this first instead I watched some idiot who said disconnect your blu-ray drive and took me 35 minutes trying to connect the 7 pins that kept bending down
Nice vid, but there are too many questions unanswered: Does XBox OS handle SSD properly or will it us it like some standard harddrive, so wear it down unnecessary quick? Why bother replacing the internal OS drive instead of just plugging in an external SSD? USB3 might be almost as fast as the internal sata connector.
Does anyone know what size screwdriver is used for the 2 screws at 0:53? I used a T-10 for the 10 screws before that which was perfect but these two screws are smaller. Not sure if T-8 or T-9. Unfortunately, a T-10 is the smallest one I have right now.
You’ll need a T10 for big screws and T8 for small ones. In my case T8 and T9 IFIXIT bits work perfectly for small screws. The link for the tools in the description.
It’s a headache. I did the whole process and the disassembling is just ridiculous. The worst part is the harddrive. I got a new SSD 1Tb and the offline updating system has stopped 3 times at 63% during the last step “applying update” for endless hours. I left it 24 hours the first time, 16 hours the second time and 4 hours the last time. The hardrive health in “crystaldiskinfo” is 100% healthy and it works great on PC (samsung 870 evo SSD). I have disassembled it 3 times, first time with new ssd, second time to put back the old hardrive, third time retrying the new ssd. I’m currently cloning the working disk onto the new ssd. So, one last assembling or disassembling before I give up. I guess 4th time was the charm, the ssd was still not recognized as a clone and the system went i to error e105, picked reset to factory, and then when restarted to error e102 and picked offline update but it still went ahead and downloaded something online, did an installation of something and then it worked. Finally fixed with new SSD.
Hy, i'll a little confused. I have an Xbox One S version. But on the Microsoft Page have two option. I see what you choose in your video, but I'll go for sure. The "Original Xbox One console only" flap means the standard first generation One Fat modells, and the other "All Xbox consoles (except the original Xbox One)" for the One S/X and Series S/X? Thanks for your answer.
Awesome video! Definitely easy to follow along with. As soon as I heard the offline update file was 5GB... I knew I'd have to go with the cloning option because my internet is atrocious and downloading those games again or that update file would be quite the process for me.
I always recommend "clean" OS installation but if it's not the option for you then just simply clone your drive. If you're cloning to a larger drive then you have to clone all partitions as is without automatically resizing them! And when the cloning is done resize manually the "user content" partition to maximum available space.
@@ElectronicsComputers if I am doing a fresh install, not cloning, and I'm going from a 1TBHDD to 2TBSSD do I need any scripts or special partition instructions?
Are we talking about partitioning if a user wants to clone their Xbox drive to a larger drive? That makes sense, but if we straight up install the software to a new drive, it should just format and install it with whatever storage left available, right?
If you want to clone your drive, watch my video on Upgrading Xbox Series X SSD where I was cloning SSDs using Macrium Reflect (same process for Xbox One X|S). You just need to clone your drive "as is" and then expand the User Content partition to the maximum available space. If you want to clean install the Xbox OS, simply insert a new or used 500GB, 1TB, or 2TB HDD/SSD and install offline updates from a USB drive. During installation, your drive will be formatted and repartitioned.

Even in 2024 this guide helps to install the OSU1 without waiting one month until MS updates the file with newer version so it would install. Hi there. I successfully installed my EV 860 SSD and now trying to do the OSU updating but I am getting error codes 101 and 106. I have done some research and many people say that the new drive needs to be properly partitioned before putting inside the console. I just put a fresh (brand new) SATA SSD in as per your video but its failing to update using the offline method. It gets to 4% then error codes on me. Any advice please?

@@ElectronicsComputers Ah, gotcha. Thanks for helping me with this, almost made a big mistake.

Same process as you upgrade your laptop: replace the drive and then install OS. Without any stupid third-party software and scripts.

Did this a couple months back. Best thing i could have done to it.
Given how the HDD bottleneck isn't with the drive as much as the controller MS chose to use, what kind of speed improvement did you expect and what did you end up actually getting?
Whats so cool about it
Mikey C its a night and day difference.
Ray Martinez used that same ssd. Exactly, worth every penny. Dashboard used to jutter like crazy. With the ssd, buttery smooth man.
When I did this it worked but when it turned back on I was brought to the profile sign in screen instead of the setup screen does anyone know if this is normal? It all seems to work fine and took the next system update just fine but would it be wise to go
ahead and factory reset it just so it’s completely fresh? (Not worried about having to redownloading games or anything as I can move them to a external drive) And should I do that via usb in the recovery menu or would just doing it through the system interface be fine?
Maybe they changed the graphical user interface or something. If the reinstalling games is not a problem then just reset your console to factory defaults. I don't think there will be any problems.

Why bother replacing the internal OS drive instead of just plugging in an external SSD? USB3 might be almost as fast as the internal sata connector.
There's definitely no need to worry about SSD wear out. That SSD will survive a few consoles maybe even you.

Great job anyway! Usually this process is very smooth but there's lots of things that can go wrong.

This process is different only for one old model and for the rest models, including One S, the process is exactly the same.

During installation, your drive will be formatted and repartitioned.

Even in 2024 this guide helps to install the OSU1 without waiting one month until MS updates the file with newer version so it would install. The trick is to take out the power cord after it has shut down (FAN has stopped) when you press reset the console. At least for me it worked after partitioning script. Before that I was going crazy, fighting 3 days with the 101 and 106 Errors.
Happy to help!
