Wahrhaft tiefempfunden!

I was first alerted to Popelka not through the 2018 Malko Conducting Competition where he was very surprisingly eliminated in the semi-finals but through a broadcast concert in late 2021. This was essentially a performance of Dvorak 6 with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. It was very fast and fiery but it had a tremendous theatrical tingle to it. It was certainly one of the most exciting performances of this still neglected work that I have ever heard. When I discovered this Frankfurt reading of the New World, I was intrigued to see if he would deliver the same kind of mindblowing performance. Not quite, would be my verdict. It is unquestionably full of the lyrical Bohemian spirit which suffes this work (it is more Czech than American, let us not forget) and Popelka has his own ideas. I'm not sure that the way he twice pulls the tempo back in the first movement (given without the exposition repeat) is completely persuasive, but the Largo is sensitively done, the Scherzo has plenty of rhythmic drive (and he doesn't dawdle unnecessarily in the Trio), and the Finale is conducted con fuoco as indicated but without ever being over-driven. If there is one overall criticism I would want to make, it is his tendency to micro-manage too much of the instrumental detail. Allowing your musicians to play without too much intervention from the podium is a useful piece of advice for any young and aspiring conductor.

This is where your young and healthy person on the podium ruins music into screaming, all for the sake of volume which must match his energy level. Beating the orchestra into the loud output does not benefit the orchestra and kills the music. I wish this conductor inspiration of different kind - musical. What I witnessed in this recording was an LA Fitness gym session.
