To each his own. Some prefer 1 beater watch to last their whole life vs. a disposable resin beater that will fail after a few months. I know someone who has a Rolex beater, it's an indestructable tool watch, to quote - "you could knock tent pegs in with it". That said, mine is a Casio MTD-1048.

@@micbarker6256 which disposable resin watches fail after a few months lol? I literally try to get mine to fail so I can buy and wear new ones. So far no luck. 4 years with the cheap Casio W800h. Farming, arborist and landscaper. Took it apart on the weekend. Not a single fleck of dirt under the plate. I love mechanical watches but they’ll pack up quicker than a Casio digital that has no moving parts.

The only >$1K watches I can imagine anyone "beating" are things like the Oris Aquis - which are designed to be pretty tough in the first place. Then again, those type of watches excell in chemical resistsnce/resistance to the elements (extended exposure to saltwater at extremely high pressure) rather than the shock associated with _literally_ beating something 🤷‍♂️

You hit the nail on the head Jody. A true beater should be something you can stick your hand into a tight squeeze without a second thought and not be disappointed when it gets a scratch. I work construction and I would never wear anything that costs more $100 to work. Today that looks like a timex Ironman. It wears all its scratches proudly and it’s littered with paint. I think anyone on my crew would be happy with this guy as well.

    • @funkmon

I agree, but that means all my watches are beaters! Lol. I stuck my hand in a big metal machine. My acquaintance says "NO YOUR WATCH!" "Whatever it's Sapphire." I also threw my Rolex at a guy who wanted to see it. Threw it. Over hand. If it can't handle a throw it's not a good watch.

INCREDIBLE piece and worth every single penny. multiple days in the pool and in the ocean on some light snorkling/swimming. not a hiccup in sight, its light enough to forget its there, but striking enough to wear to a proper dinner. i had even fallen asleep with it two nights as it just was hardly a difference from my garmin tri watch i wear almost daily. cheers to you and this vid, dare i say i'm going to buy another as a backup beater should this one finally give up the ghost one of these days.

My personal definition of a beater watch: any watch you wear during an activity with a high probability of damage to the watch. Activities such as handling heavy equipment, golf (when the watch sustains shock), hand washing dishes, etc. Either the watch is specially constructed to resist damage, or it’s so cheap that you can easily replace it if the damage is irreparable.

For me, I have one watch I wear. It is my daily beater watch. As I work in a bike shop I actually beat on it day in and day out. So for me this is not mixing up terms, just describing my style of wear. If you say you beat on your watch on a desk in front of a PC on the other hand, I see what you mean with mixing terms.

    • @TheTonyspoons

While it is 'water resistant' it would seem silly to rate it the ultimate beater when you can get a watch with proper water resistance for not much more. Yes, I know they can actually survive water, but why take the risk of needing to replace a beater more often than is necessary?

I bought a MRW-200 five years ago for a holiday in Florida just to have a cheap diver. I thought for snorkeling 100 meters should do and I was right. I was diving down to more than 5 meters and stayed in the water for hours, no problem at all. The holiday watch has become my daily now, it wears so well and is so easy to read, I really like the uncluttered dial that you dont get from any G-Shock. When changing the battery I realized it is really a G-Shock, just without the mineral cristal but I like the acrylic even better. But inside the movement is protected with the same rubber cage the G-Shocks have as well. I have white hands on blue dial making a good contrast, so the thin minute hand is very clearly visible and distinct from the hour hand.

I understand beater watch, it all depends on how you use the watch or what kinds of things you are doing while you wear it. I work in my woodworking shop, I work in my yard, I work on my house, I work on my cars. I needed a watch to wear for these activities and it will get banged around and get dirty. (When I was working on cars full time in my father's garage I was wearing an Omega Constellation. It would get covered in dirt and grease so I would clean it with soap and a toothbrush.) As a watch enthusiast I went through a lot of watches. Even when I bought a sub-$100 Seiko 5 it was still too nice of a watch to get beat up. I finally bought a used Casio quartz submariner and was willing to let it get dirty. Later I bought a very beat up Luminox Navy Seals watch and that is my current beater watch. It is already so beat up that I can't hurt it.

My beater is an analogue G-Shock. Got it for working with power tools when coaching robotics. The kids could be a bit rambunctious so it got a few hits over the years. It cost me 2.5x your limit but I wear it when most any other watch would be at risk. Have I thrown it across a room without worry - yes, to get it on a cleared table away from what we were doing. It looks as good today as it did the day I unboxed it 10 years ago.

Skmei 1622 in metallic pink and blue is the beach watch (I don't like the term beater) for me, it's resin so salt water won't attack it and since the beach is also a great place to lose stuff it is ideal if it does one day get lost. I live on the coast, it is now on year 3 so it is certainly waterproof for enough casual frequent swimming. Love it's bright colours, wouldn't swap it for a Rolex, because who in their right mind would take an expensive automatic watch sea swimming.

I’ve got three MRWs, the black on black with white markings, one with orange markings, and this white dial on bracket.
These have to be the absolute best VALUE watches out there.
I’ve got Mudmaster, other G shocks and Luminox that I use for rough work and these little gems have been put through similar treatment.
I’ll wear these when I want a watch that can be used In tough conditions without the need for other functions like ABC, or for that matter lume, but at 1/20th the cost of the muddy it does the job of telling time without any fuss, and looks good as well.
The black resin version has a similar look to the Luminox…but without the tritium.
I got the white and steel version as a more casual watch and have worn it more than I thought I would, especially on holidays in summer at the beach. Good looking, very legible and very low stress.

I have to say I actually have an aversion to quartz as a beater. A requirement for a beater for me is multi-day trips camping and/or adventure motorcycle touring. I couldn't leave for one of those trips with only a quartz as I'd be afraid the cell would fail on the trip. I know, I know, there'd be several days "warning" of it stopping via the seconds hand skipping a beat, but that would drive my OCD crazy so I'd have to have a backup watch. I'm much more likely to choose something like an Invicta 8926 (I have several of them, modded), low end Seiko diver, or my manual wind Khaki. The only trouble I've had "beating" an auto is when my old Monster stopped running after too many turns behind a pneumatic impact in the garage. A jeweler sorted it for $25 and I'm more careful about that now. Cheers, Jody! Keep up the good work!

I like this watch, Jody, but I have another genuine beater you should really look at it: the Casio Tough Solar "Illuminator" analog. They tend to run just under 50 bucks, and they are truly a big body G-Shock lite. Bulletproof, waterproof, shockproof, solar. Okay you can't really shoot them, you can't go below a million meters in the water, and they won't survive an atomic blast. But that's pretty much the limits! Light as a feather, very easy to read with a hand on a tool or a handlebar, and they even come in some snazzy colors if you look in the right places. Anyhow, another fun review. Thank you.

Cheapest in UK: £40 ...from Israel.
Bollocks to that, for about £7 more I'll stick to Vostok: dive capable to 200m water resistance (actually at least 700m according to "Beyond The Press") very customisable and not fixed at 43mm, replacement crystals available for about ten quid.
I bought a Lorus with 100m water resistance and fully lumed for £30 from Argos.
Thumbs up anyway for the review.

I suppose the definition of beater differs for everyone. My pam024 is my beater, I take it in the woods, the lake, to the park with my kids and its got tons of scratches to show for it. Its my second most expensive watch so I’m not exactly moneybags, its just the watch I enjoy wearing the most and getting all I can out of it. I haven’t quite tossed it off my wrist into the closet and don’t think I’ll be doing that anytime soon

I have the black face with dots. I took the plastic strap off and got a black nato with two red stripes. Put it on it and got over the 18mm being a bit narrow. The red stripes gave it all a “bit of flash”. 😄
Use it in the garden, on walks etc.

I wanted to experiment with hydro-modding and I thought these were a good choice as I wouldn't lose too much if it all went west. They worked out well, so then I hydro-modded a very nice Casio Edifice Chronograph. They so pretty when filled with oil. Thanks for the review.

I was looking for a watch I wouldn't worry about while swimming or bike riding, but something with the easy timing of a rotating bezel instead of a digital stopwatch, these supercheap Casios are the best! I ended up with the smaller brother to this watch or the Duro - the LRW-200, a 36mm diameter "ladies" version - they are available regular "adult", "girly" and "toy" trims and are really fun! Too bad there's no middle ground at 38 or 39mm.

I bought a $30 "beater dress watch", the Cadisen C5053M. It is a tungsten carbide watch and bracelet, with a sapphire crystal. It only has a 50m WR rating, but otherwise is virtually indestructible. I also own the discontinued DOM W624, a round tungsten/sapphire watch, with an optimistic, 200m WR rating.
Lume on the W624 is beyond bad, being super weak, and only on the dial indices. The Cadisen has no lume. Both of them have zero scratches, and look brand new. You may not care about beating on the Casios, but they will eventually show the abuse,

Last week I won an auction on eBay Italy for a brand new Marathon Navigator sage green, it is going to be my new beater watch from now on.
Previously in 1988, I bought a no-date Rolex 5513, plexiglass, discounted for sale in Switzerland and wore it seven days a week, four weeks a month for about thirty years until he started losing 20 minutes a week. So I decided to take it for a full service. Not to Rolex, who have outrageous service prices and a nasty habit of swapping parts for non-original period and model ones and keeping your original spare without returning them to the owner. I found a very good watchmaker who did an excellent job photographing the process with detailed photos of the wholly disassembled movement, water resistance, and precision tests. Before, I had taken it a couple of times to a local jewelry shop to professionally polish the plastic glass. The Rolex had been my beater watch since.

Generally my taste is similar to yours but here I do see so many Casios (not even G-Shocks) that would be better beater for approx. the same price - my choice for the Casio Beater under 50,- € would surely the Casio MWA-100HD-1AVEF which I guess offers all what this one does. Or maybe the ana-digi-techy-cool Casio AE-2000WD-1AVEF, this even offers proper 200m water resistance.

Nice one Jodi, a good honest day to day beater that you wouldn't care about if it got damaged. Different beaters for different people is also a very good point, I can't honestly imaging anyone with active neurons firing between the ears would have a mechanical Swiss watch as a beater unless they really hated it or needed some help. If you still need to tell the time for a beater then I agree it's hard to beat a G-Shock, these things just keep working battery permitting of course. These Casio's look ideal though and are possibly more versatile than an entry G-Shock.
