- Kenya heads to East Tampa to get a taste of Big John's Alabama BBQ. The family-owned restaurant is known throughout the city for its great food and friendly down-home feel. 2018 marks 50 years of service to the Tampa Bay area.
I am a once upon a time Tampa native. Because I'm a chef, I had to relocate for better options. I know they had two locations. Moved from one place to another. I think the last was on 40 the street. If your car windows were down, you could smell the smoke in the air. I now live in Alexandria, VA. I will never forget Big John's BBQ. I miss eating the food. Again as a chef, I always try to mimic Mr. John.
bruh i use to eat here almost every day after school. this place LITERATELY has the best BBQ u will ever have. that spicy BBQ sauce is on POINT!

They have by far the best chopped pork sandwich I’ve had anywhere.
I visit the Tampa area each year for spring training baseball games. Years ago I stayed at the now-defunct Golden Penny Motel at Columbus and 40th. These days I stay on Clearwater Beach, but I always try to get to Big John's at least once for lunch -- always baked beans and a pork sandwich and always a treat!. When I first ate at Big John's Alabama BBQ it was called "Big John's 'Bama BBQ.." I told the guy who seemed to one the main cook that he could make a million dollars if he could open a couple of his restaurants in Detroit, He showed me all the wood out in back."That wood is necessary. he told me. "If there were a cost efficient way to get that wood to Detroit somebody would probably do it."
I went to Pepin Academies, just across the street from Big John's. Every day during PE as I was doing my laps, I could smell the barbecue cooking.
