This is simply a master class in how to sing this song (or any other, for that matter). Janet is just the best! Total dedication to the music - no mannerisms, no 'interpretation', no irritating body language, stunning breath control and evenness of tone. Well done Murray too (no wonder Britten and Pears took to you).
If one knows this Schubert lied well, (and I have worked on it for a while now, ) you cannot help but applaud the superb and effortless musicianship which Dame Baker brings to this performance. I have the music before me and I marvel at how intimately and gracefully she has made this song her own. Breath support is incredible. Beautiful phrasing. How she has fully entered into the spirit of the song and sings, really, from inside the music! Thank you for posting this wonderful video.
Janet was the most perfect singer. She meant all the words, whether they be English, German, Italian or French. Thank you dear Dame Janet for all the hours of musical delight, both live and in recording.
There is an earnest commitment to Baker's near embodiment of Schubert's songs. All her virtues are on display, especially the glorious deep and resonant low notes and her passionate yearning in the higher ranges.Truly ,subtly, magnificent.
In this lied Janet Baker and Murray Perahia give an emotional interpretation. They show that when art is at the highest level, it opens up to universality and becomes a necessity. Thank you for posting this concert ! Other great versions are Kathleen Ferrier and Fritz Wunderlich.
Once I conversed with this wonderful person. She honoured our local music society while I was its press secretary. It was one experience that has left me in awe.Her talent and her unaffected and sweet personality touched my heart deeply. This beautiful song,by Schubert is from the heart to the heart. This was one moment in my life that I’m so thankful for 🙏🕊🙏
The GREAT INIMITABLE and WONDERFUL Dame Janet Baker!!! GOD BLESS HER for recording all this music some 30-40 years ago for us to enjoy today! She and her husband dedicated their lives to MUSIC! She is my age, and still among the living too! BRAVA Dame Janet!! And THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Brian Ebert Credentials don't matter in music. To know that it speaks to you, that you experience it with all of the myriad feelings that this art can evoke is sufficient. This is the blessing of music.
Me encanta. Gracias, Dame Janet, hermosa....!!!!
Janet born in 1933 was from Hadfield in Yorkshire near to my home town. The finest singer in the world. You know my school music teacher Betty Phillips had a beautiful voice not unlike Ms Bakers. I would give anything to sing like this.
The first time I ever heard Janet Baker was doing Schubert's lied "Gretchen Am Spinnrade". Absolutely gorgeous! Here is another great Schubert lied sung with such heart you can't help but be moved!
Lovely. My first real exposure to Dame Janet. Nice job Murray! I was your taxi service using an old VW bug convertible in the middle of winter when you gave a recital at SUNY Fredonia (southwest of Buffalo) in the late 70's.
Thanks for the 'bravo' Hideaway3! My father played Janet Baker and Christa Ludwig all the time. He always said: Remember these voices and names boy These ladies are the absolute top. I always remembered his words and the voices. I have all the records they made and have to say, that is all I need. Nowadays we have a lot of great singers but imho they never will reach the level of Christa Ludwig or Janet Baker.
All the versions I have heard lack passion. This is love they are singing of!. "Have you kindled my heart to warm love, Have you transported me into a better world, Transported into a better world!"
+Kevin Straw Fair criticism! Check out Lotte Lehmann. Now THERE is passion! Baker sings it absurdly well. But I agree that it a study in perfect singing, rather than an emotional statement.
I listened to Lotte Lehmann but I much prefer Janet Baker singing this piece. It’s clearly sung with great love.l! One can hear and see this quite plainly!!
For a singer, it's difficult so sing the vowell "i " , without been strident, specially if it's loud. And she does so beautifully the phrase "ich danke dir ". And her wonderful legatos and portamentos! Superb rendition!
Thanks for this post. I always search for as many different renditions of Schubert's lieder as possible. I like hearing different versions from different voices.. Thanks again.

Born in 1933, and retired at age 57. I listened today to a 45 minute interview with her right here on You Tube. She did tell quite a bit about her life, and her absolute dedication to MUSIC, but never did she mention what she had planned to do with the rest of her life. I am very interested and curious to know how she spent her time after retiring. Her marvelous voice just kind of haunts me, and makes me wonder about it. Does anyone know how Dame Janet is doing now? I'd like to know.
A paradox, I heartily agree with you, concerning her singing opera and her singing songs: With songs, she is able to sing with more nuances of softness and power-forte and mezza voce. I feel the same about most singers, for even when the operatic score calls for piano, very few singers are able to sing piano, and certainly not, pianissimo in the opera house!
"a long-standing chancellor of the University of York and a patron of the Leeds piano competition. But she says that her work as a singer in a way prepared her for retirement. In a 1967 interview she revealed that she was reading Jung. "The stuff of performing has to be very much an interior journey," she says now. "... My interest in what makes a human being function was applied to roles, but has also been part of something that helps me in my retirement." Interviewed by Wroe, Guardian, 2012
Thanks so much for your answer! I think Dame Janet once said that she was going to learn how to be a human.....which made me even more curious. I just mailed something to her and am hoping she really does receive it!
@@Ravenelvenlady I think that Kathleen Ferrier wat the finest Contralto in recorded memory. Her range spanned three octaves right up to high Mezzo with full resonance. She had an uniquely beautiful voice which words cannot adequately describe. An example to this lesser singer! Terribly sad ending to her. I will always love her@
Dame Janet is the gold standard. Such seriousness of purpose, such warmth of heart, such honesty of expression. And
SUCH a voice.

She can just stand there and sing and just look lovely and it makes me cry.
I love Janet Baker--she is my diva! God bless her and her divine voice.
Beautiful version of this lovely Schubert song.Such a voice.
Magnifiques interprétation de la grande Janet Baker. Ses aigus me donnent le frisson.
In this lied Janet Baker and Murray Perahia give an emotional interpretation. They show that when art is at the highest level, it opens up to universality and becomes a necessity. Thank you for posting this concert ! Other great versions are Kathleen Ferrier and Fritz Wunderlich.
Having once met and conversed with her,I can truly say that she not only had a wonderful voice, but was also a kind and sincere lady.I was privileged.
Never fails to bring a tear.
A few more in my case, I fear.
What an inspiration her singing and this song is to me. Thanks!

I lack the credentials to know who's rendition is best. All I know is that Dame Janet sends me into ECSTASY!

unbelievable breath control wow. how can someone sing so SLOWLY and actually finish these lines in tune? wow, wow, wow.
Thank you for this Dame Janet post. For me, there was never anyone better.
I, like most people love this song,in my opinion this version is top class. beautiful.

I favorited this! The lovely, unique Janet Baker, this beautiful Schubert lied - heaven. Thank you!

An die Musik (to music) Beautiful song, written in 1817. "du holde Kunst ich danke dich" "you noble art, I thank you"
Ms Baker is the worlds finest singer. Some people have all the luck and talent imaginable.
Dame Janet Baker simply is, besides Christa Ludwig/alto, the best mezzo-soprano we ever had. This is real singing!
I was given this song to learn in lessons and I didn't think much of it at the start but now I absolutely love it!
Du holde Kunst, in wieviel grauen Stunden,

You, noble Art, in how many grey hours,
When life's mad tumult wraps around me,
Have you kindled my heart to warm love,
Have you transported me into a better world,
Transported into a better world!
Often has a sigh flowing out from your harp,
A sweet, divine harmony from you
Unlocked to me the heaven of better times,
You, noble Art, I thank you for it,
You, noble Art, I thank you!

Beloved art, in how many a bleak hour,
when I am enmeshed in life’s tumultuous round,
have you kindled my heart to the warmth of love,
and borne me away to a better world!
Often a sigh, escaping from your harp,
a sweet, celestial chord
has revealed to me a heaven of happier times.
Beloved art, for this I thank you!
Ese Schubert, en la voz y el alma de Janet Baker, cada vez suena mejor! Salven ambos!
It's like the first time I hear the song. Brilliant.
Absolutely beautiful music!
Don't forget about the great Kathleen Ferrier, another wonderful British contralto/mezzo
Who could ever forget the great Kathleen Ferrirer?
Kathleen Ferrier still my #1 rendition. Left us way to soon.
What about Christa Ludwig's version ?
The admirable Janet Baker favors the instrument over the poem, and we remain a little on our hunger.
The first time I ever heard Janet Baker was doing Schubert's lied "Gretchen Am Spinnrade". Absolutely gorgeous! Here is another great Schubert lied sung with such heart you can't help but be moved!
This hearkens back to an era of artistry that has passed in many respects.

Really wish they still gave Lieder recitals at Covent Garden!
So beautiful. Thank you for posting.
Very beautiful!
素晴らしい歌声!シューベルトの心も伝わってきてとても感動しました!他の演奏も聞きたいです
A pairing of artists made in heaven. TY for this great posting.

Amen. None better than Dame Janet.
If Princess Margaret could have sung, she would have sung like this. Don't get me wrong. This is truly regal singing from Dame Janet
She looks a bit like Madge in this video!
So perfect, made me cry grateful tears.
Tears….and ecstasy!
Fantastic performance!
Gosh, it's nice to see Murray again...or at least hear him.
GLORIOUS! Thanks so much Gabba02 for this heavenly upload of Dame JANET.
I cannot hear this lied and still have dry eyes! Baker is perfect.

TY Gabba02 for this great posting.
Murray Perahia is a legend!
Che brava, che gusto, che interprete...pure Dame...
Who plays with Christa Ludwig? The great pianist Murray Perahia! How nice to have two great musicians together!!
I like this song, it's nice. I'm learning it on the piano as an accompaniement. Her voice is very opera. :P
Heaven on earth. Merci inf.

@bbbartolo -He may very well be the greatest living male pianist. Great comment.-especially for two greats on this superb collaboration.
Royalty.
i would have so loved to her on stage
@bobdoney1
I totally agree. I am her fan forever. Ferrier is so (pardon the expression) "right on!"
I'm singing this for my singing teacher's concert - it's a lovely song!
.... any tips for memorising it?
thanks!
Thanks so much for your answer! I think Dame Janet once said that she was going to learn how to be a human.....which made me even more curious. I just mailed something to her and am hoping she really does receive it!
What year was this performance given?
Bill,I enjoyed your comments - enhanced my enjoyment. Would I were more knowledgeable - it adds to one's pleasure,
In what year was this performed?
Her beautiful strong voice reminds of her country heroine, Vera Lynn, the voice behind the allied forces. Magnificent !
What era is this from?
A-R-T
She is considered on of the most superb interpreters of lieder of her generation. Alongside the likes of Elly Ameling and Dietrich Fischer Dieskau.
And Kathleen Ferrier! Dame Janet was a fervent follower of Kathleen!
@@michaelwoodrow3295 That makes so much sense. Ms. Ferrier was also one of the best. It is sad for us she died so young.

thanks guys :) my performances went well ty :D I'll definately try that tip out for my next song, brandnewviper79 :D
xx
1 verse pretty much memorized & 1 more to go. Yo check out the kind of music I've gotta do in school.
is this the original key?
Did she never do Shepherd on the rock?
Yes, she did.
:')
