I realize that many people don't know what Shogi is, but the board and flipping the pieces makes this a Shogi variant, not a Chess variant. People who love Duke and want a small, easy carry, easy teach variant that plays in about 5-10 minutes should check out Animal Shogi (Doubutsu Shogi). I plays just like a smaller version of Duke.
Clif B. Shogi is itself in the Chess family of games though, so it's still correct to say that it's a Chess variant. Moreover, the promotion mechanism in Shogi is not really like the flipping mechanism in The Duke/Jarl. Promotion is based on position and is (usually) optional. In The Duke, flipping is mandatory and happens every time the piece is used. Also worth noting, Animal Shogi is solved, which is a turn-off for some gamers.
+Clif B. Gungi is also an exciting game. Each piece has two sides, and there are drops like in shogi. But the unique feature is that a pieces can stack on each other, forming towers. An enemy piece can be pinned with one of your pieces on it. Also, a piece's movement is sometimes altered depending on which level of the tower it occupies! Some pieces even have crucial special powers.
I'm happy you brought Sam in on this one due to his love for vikings. I wonder if people will be disappointed if they buy this off the shelf without watching a review first based solely on cover art.
If basing it on the show, I would've called the game 'Earl' (Yes, I know they're the same thing). And I was surprised to not see a Shield Maiden piece in the video!

I don't own it (didn't know it existed) but I own the Duke plus expansions. I agree with Tom, I'm all in for this one. Good show.
