An underrated gem of a game is Risk: Europe. With just two house rules (reducing the score limit by one and not allowing people to buy VP), the game is truly one of the fastest, most digestible, and skill-expressive strategy games ever released.
Game of thrones: The Board Game
Risk was one of my favorite games growing up. Risk is the reason I got into board games. I have played all the games you listed, and actually own all of them save Kemet. I am surprised Axis and Allies wasn't on here. Axis and Allies tends to be highly favorable for risk fans due toa couple reasons.
1. Area Control. like some you listed.
2. Dice: I know it seems like something small, but the excitement of rolling the dice is hard to describe. "You are down to your last few guys hoping to break your opponent's continent bonus. You go for another attack; you pick up the dice and toss them. As they hit the table and begin to roll around, and everyone stands and leans in as the dice come to a stop. Cheers and screams come out from you and your allies as you kill the last remaining units holding the line. You broke his bonus." That is the feeling of excitement you get with risk and with Axis and allies that really bring the game to life.
I will say, I like all the games you listed more than risk and I think they are all great games, especially Twilight Struggle. Also, not here to say Axis and Allies is a better game than the ones you listed, but if you are looking for a game like risk, I would highly recommend Axis and Allies 1940 Europe or Axis and Allies 1940 Pacific.
Great points, I considered Axis & Allies but probably missed the list mainly because we haven't played it and we were favoring slightly newer games.
Totally agree with you on the dice point though -- I think there is definitely still a market for a "dudes on a map" game that uses a lot of modern design sensibilities but keeps the tangible excitement of dice. Heroscape is another great option, but it is sadly out of print (though apparently coming back from Renegade games!). -Ryan
Shogun or Wallenstein also share a lot in common with Risk. I like the fact that everybody plans their actions simultaneously and then get to see how those actions are resolved.
The battle tower is also a very nice way to resolve a battle very quickly 😅
Yeah I think those are great suggestions as well, made our short list when we were prepping the video. Actually haven't had the chance to try either of them myself! -Ryan
Shogun (samurai swords) does not get enough love.
@@joshfrench5858different Shogun 😉😄
Very glad you added Risk Legacy. Definitely should have put in Axis & Allies. I also think Game of Thrones and Memoir’44 would have been really good also. I do disagree on Twilight Struggle which doesn’t seem similar at all to me. Fun list to think about.
Fair points, we definitely went back and forth on exactly which ones to include. Memoir '44 was really really close to making it, another fantastic option. -Ryan
Axis and allies is definitely strategic. Global war 36 is Axis and allies on steroids! Even global war 40 is epic
Have you had a chance to try something like Shogun?
It's a game I've always described as a Risk alternative just because of how the combat works, but with a lot more going on.
Shogun/Wallenstein is one of those games that has gone on and off my wishlist for over a decade but I still haven't gotten around to trying. Don't hear as much about it these days, but I'd still jump on the opportunity to give it a shot. A cube tower for combat is definitely an interesting element! -Ryan
Great list! I think you're spot on with your comments on Risk Legacy being a better version of Risk, however IMO if you don't already like Risk, the Legacy version isn't going to be different enough to change your mind. I'll also toss in Risk Europe as a pretty cool alternative version of Risk, again, only if you already like Risk.
Good point, and I agree -- if you really really don't like Risk, then the cool Legacy elements probably won't be enough to salvage the experience for you. Thanks for adding the Risk Europe recommendation! -Ryan
"Wizard's Quest"/("Marnon") is a more entertaining alternative to RISK, and also a good gateway game into strategy boardgames, with comparatively easy to learn rules and winning conditions. Also the A.I. opponents (Orcs) and NPCs spice up the gameplay quite a bit.
Interesting, hadn't heard of it, thanks for the suggestion! -Ryan
I was totally expecting to see Kemet on this list. If you had left it off, I would have been very disappointed. Kemet is so fantastic and so aggressive. I love that players cannot turtle up and aggression is rewarded.
Glad we didn't disappoint! 😂 -Ryan
Diplomacy is also worth a shout out IMHO
Not one we have played ourselves, but certainly a unique experience that could be a good choice if it doesn't strain friendships too much haha! -Ryan
I played it online (Backstabbr) with friends who were committed to not letting friendships get ruined. It was a great experience. But it might be safer and better playing with strangers. Biggest problem is if one or more people don't make their moves or are just not very engaged.
Spheres of Influence is by far the best risk killer. Sadly, hard to find a copy.
Always hard to stay on top of which games are currently available when giving recommendations... Hopefully Spheres of Influence gets a reprint! -Ryan
I understand your selections (especially Root) and appreciate that you put this together. I was surprised a bit when neither of two games I would have thought would appear. A&A and War Room?
Thanks again!
We actually haven't personally played Axis & Allies or War Room, but we appreciate you suggesting them here as additional recommendations! 👍 -Ryan
Wow glad I discovered you guys. Great video. My #1 alt to Risk is easily Ethnos. Amazing game.
We've had a lot of fun with Ethnos! Not sure if you've seen the new reprint, Archeos Society, it looks like they removed some of the area control in favor of tracks with a variety of abilities... not sure how if feel about that haha, but it seems to have received generally favorable reviews. -Ryan
@@RollsInTheFamily ya it’s on my list of games to buy on sale. Thanks 🙏
Still love Risk and these are great suggestions. Recently got into Root, and I’d add Blood Rage to the list.
Blood Rage is another great recommendation! 👍 -Ryan
Spheres of influence should be number one.
I wasn't familiar with Spheres of Influence, but that looks like a great pick as well, thanks for the recommendation! -Ryan
Excelent video!!!! 🙂
Glad you liked it! -Ryan
You have played Imperial and Imperial 2030?
We have not, but I've always thought it looked intriguing! -Ryan
@@RollsInTheFamily Need min. 4 players though.
Kemet is excellent!
Inis. And if you want to dig deeper: Pax Pamir and then Pax Renaissance, the G.O.A.T. If you have a lot of time and a big group: Here I Stand.
Would love to try both Inis and Pax Pamir. Here I Stand is one of those games I want the opportunity to experience, but hard to imagine ever having the right group to own myself haha. -Ryan
small world? twilight struggle?Kemet?
if the topic is "games that are quite like risk but much, much better" the #1 recommendation should be Dust, and the #2 should be Frontier Wars.
Thanks for adding your recommendations! Not familiar with either of those personally. -Ryan
You know of any video games similar to risk? I’ve been trying to play risk online, but it constantly disconnects all of my group.
This article appears to have some good suggestions, including some digital adaptations of some of our recommendations and some other risk-like board games: culturedvultures.com/games-like-risk/
Blood Rage
War Room
TI4 (why not)
Rising Sun
Lords of Hellas
Nice picks! TI4 just missed the top 5 for us. 🙂 -Ryan
@@RollsInTheFamily after playing Lords of Ragnarok, I have to include that too. Pretty solid game. One other I was considering is War of the Ring, and maybe it’s spiritual successor Dune: War for Arrakis.
I literally meant, if you put in Root and Twilight Struggle, you might as well include TI4 😄
I enjoyed the video.
Thanks! War of the Ring is great too, we decided to only include one big 2-player only recommendation, and Twilight Struggle felt a little stronger connection to Risk with the real-world map.
Enjoying hearing more recommendations in the comments though, Lords of Ragnarok looks cool, I didn't realize they made a follow-up to Lords of Hellas!
Cthulhu wars is a great risk alternative with asymmetrical play and combat
I've heard good things about Cthulhu Wars! However, it does not seem to be an easy game to get your hands on these days, even when you backed the Kickstarter! 😬 -Ryan
Twilight struggle so good,
Cyclades is a good game also
Definitely one I'd like to try sometime! -Ryan
Small World is a great game, highly recommended. The amount of variations between races/powers means you'll never play the same game twice.
Small World holds a special place for us as one of the first modern board games that we played heavily around 15 years ago. The way the powers and races get randomly matched up and then balanced through bidding is a really great way to have huge variability while not giving players too much of a lucky advantage. -Ryan
Honorable mention for Scythe as a Risk alternative! I love how it manages area control, while giving you multiple paths to victory. The asymmetry of the factions and encounter cards make the replayability factor great as well!
@@mattfowler1530 Scythe is another great recommendation! It takes the area control elements of Risk and adds some fun mechanics of resource management and various objectives. I need to play that one again! -Daniel
I would have expected games that are much more similar to risk and not just show modern direct confrontation games.
You wont catch somebody grown up with risk to play games like root. They are far too complex.
You could have mentioned games like Shogun or Axis & Allies which are also quite old but miles better than risk and yet similar enough.
I don't know any very similar modern games (maybe Cthulhu Wars), so I was hoping to see some recommendations for real alternatives to risk...which your list kind of fails.
You could have mentioned War of the Ring. At least it has kind of many units and some battles that feel a bit like risk, at least rolling dice.
Yeah it is definitely difficult to pick which 5 games to recommend. I think our approach was to focus on "games we most recommend that are similar to Risk" as opposed to "games that are MOST similar to Risk."
As mentioned in the video, I totally agree about the complexity of Root -- but I have also found that just because someone has only played older games like Risk doesn't mean they wouldn't love a complex modern game, they may have just never been exposed to it!
But I can see why the list may feel off if you were wanting games as similar to Risk as possible, and I think some of your suggestions here like Shogun, Axis & Allies, War of the Ring, and Cthulhu Wars are other great recommendations. 🙂 -Ryan
I grew up on Risk--had the MB Risk/Castle Risk combo as a kid and it was my most played game from the mid 80s to early 90s.
And I absolutely love Root.
People are all so different, and I think it is part of the reason why the term "gateway games" is kind of a misnomer. What we really mean is that they are games that have the broadest appeal for introducing new people to the hobby, but for any individual person, really any game could be a great introduction for them personally.
I know there are a lot of people that cite Arkham Horror 2nd edition as their "gateway game," which is definitely a complex game you wouldn't normally recommend as a first game for a newcomer.
With all that in mind, we tried to balance the list to provide recommendations that might appeal to gamers on both ends of that spectrum. And, ultimately, it is subjective haha, these are just our picks for the topic. 🙂
No axis and allies. 😢
Another good choice! Really only missed the list since we are less familiar with it. -Ryan
@@RollsInTheFamily I’ve love that game since the early 90’s I still have my original copy. Plus a bunch of the newer versions. They are releasing a gi joe version next year.
