He traded away defensemen Zdeno Chara, Wade Redden, Bryan Berard, Eric Brewer, Darius Kasparaitis, and Bryan McCabe; goaltenders Roberto Luongo and Tommy Salo; as well as forwards Olli Jokinen, Todd Bertuzzi, Tim Connolly, Jean-Pierre Dumont, and Raffi Torres.
Correct me if I’m wrong, wasn’t Don Cherry Mike Milbury’s coach in Boston for a few seasons in the 1970’s? I would guess Cherry admires the toughness of Milbury especially when he played. Milbury was a dirty player at times and went in the stands and fought fans at Madison Square Garden during a game in New York. Those 1970’s Bruins team were pretty gritty and even made it to the Stanley Cup finals in 1979 losing to the great Canadiens team.
+Josh Butterwick Stop and think about the scope of "He hit a fan with his own shoe!" That's out of a comic book or a slapstick movie. It's mind boggling that it happened.
2:01 I don't know what's it's like in a locker room like these guys, but I saw this for the first time today and by coincidence, I was looking up Pat Quinn and saw this quote from Linden: "When he walked into the room, everything stopped. Guys were taping their sticks or talking, everything stopped. He could deliver a message like none other. His presence in the locker room was incredible. He respected his players but in turn, the players had a tremendous amount of respect for him; admired him, but definitely there was a little bit of fear, for sure."
1) Yashin was a proven NHL talent who had back to back 40 goal seasons. Milbury had no way of knowing that a 27 year old superstar in his prime would start a rapid decline. 2)Chara was a project at the time, and not a Norris trophy candidate that he became. He wasn't even as good as Hal Gill back then! He had 6 career goals in 3 and a half years, & was a -61, coming off of back to back -27 seasons. 3)Berard & Straka for Redden & Rhodes was a steal back then. 4)Hamrlik is way better than Brewer.
I wondered it’s unusual how Hockey night in Canada would employ an American such as Mike Milbury? But then again NBC employs a Canadian in Keith Jones and Anton Carter.
Let's focus on the main thing. You could also say the Oilers are going to have cap woes with all the talent. Now look at the salary cap. It will be set at about $64M after the CBA...Chara $7.5M - Redden $6.5M - Brewer $4.25M - McCabe $5.75M - Luongo $3.2M - Jokinen $5.25M - Bertuzzi $4M - Connolly $2.9M - Torres 875K - Salaries are from their 1st contracts
Smolinski and Palffy traded for Jokinen and 1st rounder (Pyatt). Jokinen, Luongo, traded away. Pyatt, Connolly, traded for Peca. Peca traded for nothing 5)McCabe, Bertuzzi, 3rd Pick (Jarkko Ruutu) for Linden. Linden traded away for nothing, returned to Canucks 3yrs later 6)Tommy Salo, traded away for nothing 7)Torres traded for nothing
The Kasparitis trade wasn't as bad as people think. Smolinski was a solid 2nd line center, traded for a 2nd pairing D-man who was a great hitter, although he was dirty. He scored 28 goals in only 64 games his 1st year on Long Island..
Luongo choked in the cup finals, and also has a RIDICULOUS contract that Vancouver is desperately trying to trade. Your point about Trevor Linden backs up my point completely! As soon as he left Long Island, he returned to form! There is something wrong with the organization, and it goes much deeper than just the GM!
Zigmund Palffy, Zdeno Chara, Wade Redden, Bryan Berard, Eric Brewer, Darius Kasparaitis, Bryan McCabe, Roberto Luongo, Tommy Salo, Olli Jokinen, Todd Bertuzzi, Tim Connolly, Raffi Torres, Rick DiPietro. But hey, at least he didn't trade Pierre Turgeon for Kirk Muller.
Bosox which team was Milbury on that played in the finals, as a player I mean? Was it against the Flyers in like mid 70's? I dont remember him being on any of those teams.
In 1992, after being drafted 1st overall, Alex Diagle said he was glad he was drafted 1st, because no one remembers #2. #2 was Pronger. Diagle ended up going from being compared to Wayne Gretzky, to playing some crappy team overseas
Being a hockey player, I agree with Milbury, when the coach walks in and starts talking, you drop everything and listen. It`s like an unwritten rule, I doubt you would know though
*I'm not an Islanders fan...Ok, let's look at the deals. 1)Draft Chara, then trade with 2nd pick(Spezza), for Yashin. Sign Yashin to major deal. Never performed well, contract bought out. Still effects Isles today 2)Redden drafted #1. Never played. Traded for Berard. Berard gets injured once and is traded away 3)Brewer traded away for Hamrlik. Hamrlik let go 4)Traded away Kaspariitis for Smolinski
That's funny because Spezza had been on the trading block for the past 3 years before having a decent season last year. He's never scored 35 goals in a season, he's never totaled 100 pts, and his similarity score associates him most closely with (get this) Alexi Yashin! lol Regarding the cap, I'm referring to where they'd be for the past 7 years with Luongo, Chara, & Spezza-although I think you get that they'd never have had Luongo or Spezza if Milbury didn't trade for those picks to begin with!
By the way, Mike may have drafted Dipietro over Heatley, but don't forget Patrick Stefan was drafted ahead of BOTH Sedins, and Don Waddell kept his job for 11 more years after that debacle!
Yashin was already hated before he got to NY. He was bound to fail, but still got signed to that monster contract. Linden came back to VAN and returned to his old form and so on. The Islanders should have kept Luongo. Instead they draft another goalie (Dipietro) and trade Luongo. Luongo helped Florida become a better team. He helped Vancouver become a powerhouse team. So poor decision making as usual from Milbury
Just those 3 players would take up 22+ of the 64 million dollar cap, & the NY owner doesn't go near the ceiling! They're typically around 45 mil. FYI it was Milbury who brought in Berard to begin with, along with Straka & Beaupre for Rhodes and Redden. That was a steal. He also traded a broken down Wendel Clark & an aging Matthew Schneider for Luongo to begin with! Most NY fans forget that. He's also the 1 who traded FOR Ollie Jokinen & Taylor Pyatt. NY wouldn't have had them without Mike!
The difference there is that Russian players were a lesser known commodity. Patrick Stefan was Canadian. Not too many 1 overall Canadian picks are busts. And as bad of a pick as I think Dipietro was being taken 1 overall, he actually had 3 straight winning seasons playing for a terrible team. I think injuries have really really derailed him the past 4 seasons.
Listen, I'm a long suffering Isles fan who had season tickets during the fishstick era. I watched this guy dismantle what should have amounted to an organically grown contender. It was a disgrace to watch all our blue chip talent help other teams win. That said, he's correct in this instance. Hockey players are a breed apart. Healy was just taking the opportunity he had to bury him. Right idea, bad timing.
I also didn't see your other comment, but the Torres trade was good, except for the fact he was given away like all the others. Dipieto's and Yashin's contracts still hurt the Islanders today. Yashin's buyout is still in effect and Dipietro has barely played in the last 4 years. he will also barely play the next few with Nabokov in ne
You didn't watch every single game carefully. Luongo played great. The Canucks played great. They took Boston to game 7 with 9 injured and 1 suspended player. Also, Vancouver aren't desperately trying to trade Luongo. They are taking their time. The only reason he's getting traded is because Schneider is ready to start
That's $40.225M on 9 of 20 players. They'd have almost $30M to spend on 11 others players. You could add a few more players and be done. Plus, if someone wasn't working out, you could trade them for plenty of skill (instead of the crap they were traded for)
I agree with Milbury. I don’t get why everyone’s like nah it’s no big deal they don’t pay attention to there coach. That’s a big deal they should be listening intently when there coach is talking
Milbury is a childish goof. I remember one time when he and Healey were sitting side by side trading barbs and Healey was getting the better of him so Milbury reached over and messed up his hair like you would do to a little kid. So unprofessional to do that to another analyst on live tv. I hated him from that point on.
Not all the trades were "giveaways." Mark Parish was actually a solid player, but Kvasha made that deal a bust. The Islanders as an organization have been terrible since their glory days of Mike Bossy, Dennis Potvin, Billy Smith, Brian Trotier and Clark Gillies. They're always going to be second fiddle to the Rangers, the way the Mets are to the Yankees. He gave up too much to get Linden and Pecca, but those guys were solid players that just didn't live up to their expectations-nor did Yashin.
Alex Diagle wasn't Russian. He was Canadian. Diagle just crumbled under the pressure of being compared to Gretzky and Lemeiux. Dipietro has played 46 games in 4 years. he had 1 season you could consider good. He might have been better if 10-15 good players weren't traded away
Loll good job Glen... Look at the highlights they brought in to rip the caps... Two prime scoring opportunities by Alex Ovechkin lollll... He's only got like 400 goals since then hahahaha.
I'm not saying that Mike was a good GM. But what I AM arguing is that it seemed that no matter who Milbury brought in, they failed. They were good players before they got to long Island, but there is an institutional problem with the Islanders where good players went and became mediocre. Yashin, Pecca, Linden, Clark, etc. As I've stated before, you can't complain about guys like Luongo. He wouldn't have been in NY to begin with because Mike traded 4 the pick!
ok, I didn't see you last comment. But Milbury still is a big reason to blame for the Islanders demise. This team could've been a powerhouse to this day. Instead, they are headed to relocation
The Islanders are just messed, Grabner plays 1 year and he hits rock bottom. Okposo who? Even Tavares hasn't devoloped fully until the 85-100PT player he's supposed to be. This year was supposed to be the big year for him, not the next
Milbury is actually a very knowledgeable guy who was a competent player and a good coach in Boston. But somewhere along the way he developed an arrogant persona that seeks to always criticize the modern-day hockey player, especially if he's not North American. He speaks in generalities. It's painful to watch him.
@sammycircle completely wrong....he was a good gtr who played for a while.....plus he was a key back up for rangers in 94 won some key games ehen richter was slumping. he is respected around the league, millburry is not
The reality that you aren't confronting is the salary cap woes they would have had. They never would have been able to keep all of those players that were traded, so your dreams of a dynasty aren't realistic. Luongo was making 6.75 million a year, & Milbury replaced him with Dipitro who only makes 4.5. Chara has been making 7.5 million a year, Spezza was making 8 million a year. (Spezza is overrated, overpaid, and was a marginal bust when you consider his salary) Don't forget that
I know that Ovechkin scored a career low 65 points this past season, and chased his coach out of town! I also know that you blew your high school hockey coach, just so that you could be a puck bunny! :)~
You don't get it...you can't base it on their first contracts, and you also can't talk about players that Milbury traded away if he is the one who traded for them to begin with! If Milbury weren't there, The Islanders would never have had Spezza, Luongo, Torres, or half of the other names you listed!
And in the end who was proven right? Yes Mike Milbury because Bruce got canned and as far as the Caps go they choked again in 2013. So the Milbury haters can sit on there couch and hate some more. I don't think he cares.
As an Islanders fan I hate Milbury and don't like Healy. Milbury had a good comeback anyway. Healy hates the isles and anyone associated with them. Simple as that.
That's because Healy isn't smart enough to get a job as a GM in the NHL. When Milbury took over the Islanders, they were the worst team, with the worst ownership, & the worst stadium in the NHL. He made a lot of bad moves as GM, but he made some good 1's like Janne Niinimaa and a 2nd rounder for Brad Isbister and Raffi Torres. The Isles fired him in 2006. It's now 2012 & the Isles continue to suck. Is it really his fault or is it a systemic organizational issue? They sucked before & after Mike.
Millbury sucked as a player, underachieved greatly as a coach, and ruined the Islanders franchise as a GM. And he sucks as a commentator. He needs to go away.
I understand the hate you guys have for Boston. We win a lot. But show some respect for an original 6. Otherwise stop pretending to be hockey fans. Especially if you never laced up a pair of skates or dropped ur gloves.
Your making fun of Healy? At least Healy didn’t trade away Jason Spezza, Zdeno Chara, Wade Redden, Bryan Berard, Eric Brewer, Darius Kasparaitis, Bryan McCabe, Roberto Luongo, Tommy Salo, Olli Jokinen, Todd Bertuzzi, Tim Connolly and Raffi Torres like Milbury did. At least Healy didn’t draft Rick Dipietro over Dany Heatley and Marian Gaborik and trade for Alexei Yashin. At least Healy didn’t sign Dipietro and Yashin to 2 of the worst contracts in hockey history
Both Milbury and Healy are annoying. Just like Pierre Mcguire as well. Kelly Hrudey also shows so much bias whenever he opens his mouth. I don't know why these guys are even doing hockey analysis. I'm sure they would do better than me, but I am also sure the broadcasts would be so much better without them. I am GLAD some of them won't be around next year with the big shakeups in TV deal contracts.
Mike Milbury has never seemed likeable. Good call Glen Healy
that guy ruined the islanders future
Jacob Eifert rick dipeatro for 10 years was a great deal no?
Wasn't that for 15 years? I think he's being paid 1.5m til 2029. Yashin had the 10 years deal.
@@jeffgilbert9917 I think he signed in 2007 so he's being paid till 2022 lmfao and to think he gave up luongo after 1 year for him

way to go glenn. milbury has had this coming for a long time and deserves even more than that.
I wanna see Mike Milbury get ripped on by Don Cherry, like a full on argument
I think that would end in a fight, which would be all kinds of embarrassing for everyone.

Doubt it, Milbury played for Cherry.

haha healy and milbury are both jokes
That's awesome, calling out Milbury like that. I like to hear his commentary but he strikes me as a self-important ass.
"If I were a GM and hearing that..." because you did such a good job as GM (and as a coach as well).
not only did John scott score 2 goals & win the MVP of the all star game, he also won $90,000 and got an endorsement deal
Millbury traded Luongo, Chara and Spezza before their primes and I still respect his opinion more than I do Healy's!
ThaWizerMan well you’re a fucking idiot then

I agree with Milbury. Healy was a bum goalie, who the fuck is he?
hard to have an ego when you spend your entire career on the bench eh Heals?
Healy was a better goalie than Milbury.
Your making fun of Healy? At least Healy didn’t trade away Jason Spezza, Zdeno Chara, Wade Redden, Bryan Berard, Eric Brewer, Darius Kasparaitis, Bryan McCabe, Roberto Luongo, Tommy Salo, Olli Jokinen, Todd Bertuzzi, Tim Connolly and Raffi Torres like Milbury did. At least Healy didn’t draft Rick Dipietro over Dany Heatley and Marian Gaborik and trade for Alexei Yashin. At least Healy didn’t sign Dipietro and Yashin to 2 of the worst contracts in hockey history
Does anyone likes mike milbury
Both Milbury and Healy are annoying. Just like Pierre Mcguire as well. Kelly Hrudey also shows so much bias whenever he opens his mouth. I don't know why these guys are even doing hockey analysis. I'm sure they would do better than me, but I am also sure the broadcasts would be so much better without them. I am GLAD some of them won't be around next year with the big shakeups in TV deal contracts.
hahahaha yes i agree tottally i was about to type almost the same thing
We need more Colby Armstrongs.
What’s the shakeups in TV? Whose gone?
No body likes milbury
