    Finally good stroke info for those who don’t know where to start! I had to figure out all of these techniques, I’ve been seeing on YT recently, 30 years ago. The education of stroke is so much better. Unfortunately, many schools don’t teach much of it. You have to go to those weekend or 10 day continuing-ed to get anything useful. I noticed, now that PTs have their PhDs and OTs their Masters, does not mean they know anything about stroke. I worked with a gentleman post stroke in his home, had in-patient and home therapy. No results. The first day, I started the lymphedema and significant reduction in the horrible edema in UE/LE. He was bed bound and couldn’t do anything. After about 12 weeks, he was able to have movement in shoulder, elbow, wrist and a few fingers, roll, sit EOB, don shirt with assist, pull up his shorts in supine, stand pivot to w/c with assist, sliding board for car. He then went to PT clinic because I didn’t have the equipment for the ambulating and safety for standing. I still worked with him at home 3 days/wk. Unfortunately, almost everything he progressed on was my input physically or suggesting what they (therapists should do), which they didn’t like. I always soaked up what other therapists did or suggested for the benefit of the pt. His wife started seeing he wasn’t getting ahead, he had the potential, she had him transfer to another clinic. It was a bit better. Therapists need to be educated on the principles of stroke therapy, because you can apply it to so many different deficits besides stroke. It will make you an excellent therapist and be extremely rewarding.

    Thank you for this information. We tend to not even consider gravity when we begin our healing journey.

    Great video, full of practical tips. I love the anti-gravity trick without being limited to lying on a bed. Mental Imagery / Visual Imagery works. It totally worked for me getting my hand back and I've used it in other recovery scenarios as well as preach it to other stroke survivors. But, I think 2 things happen with most people. One is they don't really believe it or give it a chance in the first place. The other is they give up on it when they don't get immediate results. Of course, I love the adaptive use of things survivors have around the house. When you can do 100, do 200 sounds so much like me, LOL!

    What do you if the patient is pretty old, resistant to exercise and in terrible pain?

    • @jr9779
      @jr9779 Месяц назад

      Pain can be decreased if there is edema. The edema has to go. I’m certified in lymphedema and use a technique related to that and retrograde massage. If the fluid doesn’t get to the lymph, it’s not going anywhere and the pt will right back where they were as soon as extremity is no longer elevated.
      Have to know your contraindications for that as well due to blood clots, etc. Also, desensitization with tapping, light to moderate rubbing, massaging the muscles/nerve pathway helps. Eventually, it won’t be a problem, unless there is other damage or something else going on.
