    I had the same service done on an old 2005 dyna of mine after hearing about the spring loaded cam tensioner stories, at the time the bike had about 25k on it. I asked the tech afterwards if he were just doing a tensioner inspection only, would he have recommended a tensioner replacement and he said no, while there was some wear on them, it wasn't bad but it was peace of mind for myself and I was pleasantly surprised that it freed up some horsepower and the engine felt more responsive as well.

    I have to say that you have been a tremendous help to me. I am doing a feuling kit and s&s 509's on my 05 fxst and you explain the process perfectly. I am a machinist by trade (25 years) so the small stuff like heating in the bearings really makes a lot of sense. Thank you very much sir! I'd let you work on my bike if I wasn't doing it my self.       Let me Give you a tip go with S&S adjustable pushrods don’t ever use feuling pushrods and pushrod tubes those are the biggest pain in the ass ever! unbelievable not only was it a pain in the ass trying to get the set screw down the same time while sliding the tube down and getting to the point where it finally would start catching threads and hold the bottom part up so you could have room to accomplishing this, and after it’s all adjusted then comes the battle of getting the top part of the tube on, holy shit. You have to mash centerpiece down as far as it can possibly go with the spring and still get another eighth of an inch out of it to force the top part in I was ready to take them all set up on the floor and take a sledgehammer to them and then order S&S rods and tubes I have S&S adjustable’s in my Shovelhead they are so much easier especially with solid lifters since you don’t have to adjust them from time to time my other bike is an 01 FXST that I put 510s in Love those S&S cams hate those feuling adjustable pushrods.

      who are smart enough to entertain the thought it takes to build a system like this think its ok to make the shoes on the tensioners out what may as well be "orange peel" and then expect them to last about 20k miles.
      The MoCo skipped out IMHO. HD should at the very least give a set milage that they need to be looked at, or R&R....ya think?
      Any how quality video done by the guy who should've designed the system!

    Great work. Looking forward to the next segment. I have two TC88 engines that will face this in the future. I kept both my HDs, but this issue is what caused me to move away from HD for my next motorcycle purchase.

    We are going to shoot a RUclips video ; of a twin-cam 88 running with the cam chain tensioners pulled.
    Then, we are going to look for a Mil-8 motor ; pull the hydraulic tensioners out ; plug the oil feed ; and re-shoot another video of this motor running without those chain tensioners.......

    Hey Brad, I’m installing this kit on my Harley, was wondering if I need to re use the bolts that held the original cam bearing retainer plate on the old cam plate. One of them snapped off, and I’m having a hell of a time finding replacements.

      If your using a harley Davidson screaming eagle hydrolic kit, it will come with new screws for the cam bearing retaining plate. Thoes are little bugger screws and the torque on them is only 40 inch pounds. There part number 68042-99 and usally selll for like $4 if you needed to buy another one.

    HDW,, I'm learning a loy from your vids. If it were me I'd forgo taking the top of the engine off (unload the customer had top end problems) and install adjustable pushrods? Couldn't tell, but are you using INA Bearings or Torrington? I live by if it ain't broke don't fix it. How long did you heat the plate? You do good complete work.

      Thanks for the compliment. There torrington style bearings. They offer in the screening eagle catalog. This is a early twin cam and they came with uncoated rocker box gaskets that are super leak prone. So while doing cam chest work it makes sense to upgrade and fix rocker box gasket leaks.       I want to say 2004 and earlier. But alot of aftermarket gasket kits come with the uncoated ones so unless you look up under the rocker boxes it can be a bit of a crapshoot.

    Hi Brad. I own a 2018 Road King. Do you think that a new SE cam plate and high vol. oil pump to take care of sumping issues and provide good support and oiling for a new Zippers 468 cam?

      as for Harley Davidson parts you'd want to use the new 2020/2021 oil pump and it works with your current cam plate. It would work well with any cam.

    Nice video bro. I just started on my 01 Glide, 47,000 mi still in one piece. But doing on a budget, if my cam look good should I reuse them & Lifter's? Also when I was taking exhaust off it looks like I have an oil seepage right under rear exhaust studs. top head fins look, maybe a head gasket on the rear?? Any advice would be much appreciated!! Thx brother.

      Ya. possibly head gasket seepage, it does happen. If the parts look good, reuse them for sure.

      Hey wizard. Yeah, head gasket was blown on rear cylinder dowel. I went with S&S 510s gear drivin & fuleing Lifter's & plate & oil pump. hopefully I didn't make wrong choice? As far as gears being too loud!! I guess I'll be the first to know!! Lol. (01 E Glide) thx for all your help. 👍

      25284-11 is what i used in this video but there are other part numbers available for newer bikes also.

    What type of grease/lube are you applying to the bearings (around 2:30 in)?

      That's just normal harley davidson 20w50 engine oil in the squirt can. I like to "pack" the new bearing with engine oil. And on the matching part of the cam I lube with actual assembly lube.

      We recommend to inspect a spring loaded tensioner at 30k and there usually just about done by then. With synthetic some people get 40k. The service manual says to replace the tensioner when its 50% through its usable pad. That's like 2mm. People push them way to far and it bites them. I've seen the new hydrolic tensions go 70-80k miles and still look pretty good.

      I havent seen much of a difference in the hydraulic tensioners. But on a spring loaded tensioner performance cams do seam to suck some life out of them.

      Yer I run Full Synthetic oil. But will make sure I check at 30thou intervals. Which is about 50thou KM to me.

      Harley Davidson Wizard yer I still run hydraulic tensioners. I also change lifter every 40thou KM. And definitely change out oem lifters for high performance ones. I will be fitting solid lifters to me 117” Fatbob at some stage also. Cheers again 🍻

    I visited two dealers to discuss tensioners but really got no good info. My question is that I see info stating imspect at 30,000 mi, but my motorcycle is a 2003, with 16,500 mi on it. Does the age of the shoe also have any effect on its deterioration?

      I used a can of MAP gas attached to my blow torch set a medium/low flame (I bought both the torch and MAP gas from Home depot, normal consumer grade stuff, nothing fancy.) then I applied heat and counted to 60 sec. and counted another 60 sec. So a total of 2min heat applied constantly moving the torch. Then dropped in the bearings and used light compressed air to accelerate the cooling.

    Couldn't you just put the cam plate in the oven for a few minutes or is there other parts that could be damaged by doing that? Got an 04 heritage i need to give some TLC to.

      Im sure you could but ovens heat the entire part and they heat fairly slowly. Where using the MAP gas heats just the area I want and heats it fast. I assume there would be more possible warpage using a oven but IDK.

    As I understand it, the shaft runout has to be less than 3 thousandths to use the hydraulic cam chain tensioner. Is that correct?

      Pinion shaft run out needs to be at or less than .010 (ten thousandths). Your dial indicator should be located at where the cam plate supports the end of the crankshaft. The .010 (ten thousandths spec isnt specifically for hydraulic tensioners, it's because more than .010 (ten thousands) pinion shaft runout with cause pre mature ware of the cam support plate bushing and the oil pump. So anything at or less than .010 (ten thousandths) is within spec and is perfect suited for hydraulic tensioners. It's only if you're going Gear Drive cams that your required to have tighter tolerances like .002 (two thousandths).

    At how many miles should you change the tensioners? Looking at a 2006 Fatboy with 8600 miles. Approximate cost?

      15,000 to 20,000 miles we recommend taking the cam cover off and inspected the tensioners. They 30k miles is the longest to expect them to last usally. Cost varies alot deping on if you want to do the hydraulic cam plate upgrade. But if you did you'd probably have around $700 in parts and it's usally around 6 hours of shop labor to do the job.

      I'm at Motor City Harley in Farmington Hills Michigan. Doing the cam chain tensioner job is normal 6 hours labor and if there's oil pan needs to be removed to be cleaned that's extra. I dont post labor rates as they very but 6 hours is very typical.

      Yes you plug the 3rd hole. If your using a screaming eagle cam plate. Harley davidson has a special seal and screw for that 3rd hole. I can get the part number tomorrow if you'd like.
