Here are some I forgot to mention: * They both use armies to attack in war. But not only armies, they use huge monsters for battle. Paul uses giant worms while Eren uses the colossal titans hidden inside the walls. * One of their fathers die which is used as a sub motive for each character. Let me know what comparisons you want to see next!
Eren has more similarities with Paul's son, Leto II than himself. - Their fathers are outsiders - Their mothers aren't their fathers' first wives - Power to transform into a monster (Leto can't change back) - save and unite the world by becoming the common oppressor of the people. - died by the hands of loved ones - their deaths are necessary in creating a new era of peace. - Both can communicate with their predecessors who had their powers. - Both are able to communicate with their predecessors.
I actually would like to disagree with you on Eren and Paul being able to control their own fate. Their fates seemed manipulated by others or just their nature. Paul’s being his mother and the Bene Gesserit and Eren’s being his himself and his nature to always want to fight against something. Paul was groomed at a young age to become the messiah and Eren steadily fell victim to his nature.
I think that's the point. Technically they both had a choice. But in reality their very nature and upbringing had basically programmed them to react a certain way and choose the only option they ended up choosing. They both could not escape their nature.
You're kind of right dude. Dunes a lot more complex than that if you actually read the books. Would say spoilers but the films depart from the books quite a bit and the Dune saga has been around since the 60s.😅 Paul ends up exiling himself from the Fremen by at the end of Dune Messiah and starts preaching against himself, the belief that he's devine prophet. And also although Paul does spread a Jihad/Crusade(holy war) across the known universe that kills 61 billion people, he ends up running away from the Golden Path and so his son Leto II picks up from were Paul left off and becomes the worm-human hybrid tyrant known as the 'God Emperor' in order to fulfill the Golden Path.
The Dune movie departs pretty heavily in the book. In the book, Paul had more real, conscious choice about the path he went down. In the movie, yeah, his mom basically raised him that way.
Neither had real choice because of their upbringing and their personalities, but both did accept their 'fates' seeing no other better way out than the one they respectively took for the greater good in the long run. They did have free will though and could have chosen not to, but what good would it have done in the end?
Very well explained. It's always haunting to see a well-meaning protagonist transform into something they wanted to avoid but seemingly have no choice in.
@@kinggeno1 Agreed. Things may have turned out differently if he had more support. Also if Mikasa was more honest about her feelings, Eren would've abandoned the plan right then and there.
@@kinggeno1 I'd argue it's kinda Eren mental problem. He could have told his friends about his future insight but he didn't. If you remember season 1, Eren is traumatized from having to trust his comrade the levi squad instead of himself because that decision in his eyes caused their death. In season 2, he tries to trust himself more and yet got kindnapped anyway. Slowly, Eren is developing a mindset of only trust himself so all the burdens is on him and not the people he loves while also have to be absolutely strong (the founding titan power). It's sad that his selflesness became way too extreme to the point he is calling every shots and decision that in the eyes of others may comes across as selfishness.
Another similarity is how they were allowed to see the future. Even sees the memories of the previous and "next"(in case there was one) possessors of the Attack Titan and he does that after making contact with Royal Blood. Paul also sees both the future and the past through the memories of other people, which is only possible after his genetic memory is unlocked and that happened when he drank the water of life.
Couldn't agree more. I was discussing this with my mate a few days ago. It's awesome to see someone else voice the same comparison so well. Shame Isayama didn't let my boy finish his job.
I mean technically both of them had an ending that wasn't liked by most of the people but I still think both of the endings are brilliant for their characters.
Super nice video bro, instead of the other shorts or videos, in one side you have the extremely fans of AoT saying that Eren it's better than Paul, and in the other side we've the extremely Dune fan's that said Paul it's better than Eren, but man they're different characters and the story it's completily different, and you talk about how similar they're instead of which one it's better, and compare them in a very good way, excelent video and new sub
Best thing is how well this stories complement each other. Eren is basically alternative reality paul (especially for dune Messiah) but eren is much more focus on his friends when paul is much more mature (also because he's older at that point). Very similar arc but they both took different answers. Paul Hurt and let die to a lot of his friends to save the world. Eren kills the world to save his friends. This really shows they didn't have good way out
The thing about eren is his view of the future is not blurry at all. I mean maybe earlier on when he gets visions from other attack titan users, but towards the end of the story he is so deep into his view of the past and the future that it’s like he’s experiencing it all at once and he can’t actually change anything.
I always felt that paul's descend into the lisan al gaib was really harsh in the movies, that's where the book come in because they take a slow step to it and even then it feels a little harsh because he doesnt really change himself, it is the water of life which gives him insight to his terrible future. This is where eren takes the lead as his descend into evil was soo detailed and explanatory.
@@kuturbie even after that we see that eren doesn't completly change into a different person. In the flashbacks of season 4, (they show what happened in the four year gap) we see that eren is still very much conceree about mikasa and historia. If they ever decide to make another Aot Live Action They better cast Timothee Chalamet as Eren Yeager he almost sounds and looks like Eren lol especially when he played a similar character
yo thank you for this, coming from a fan of the dune books/movies. i started AoT because of everyone saying that paul and eren were similar. i honestly thought the creator of AoT was inspired by dune in some way but no, crazy huh. 2 of my fav series ❤
I've been saying this since the Manga ended. And especially since the Anime ended because the Anime made it even more clear. Eren is clearly inspired by Paul Atreides. This also why I don't get the people who say AoT is just a Facist Apologist Propaganda. Because the way I saw it. AoT just like Dune was basically a warning against Charismatic Leaders and putting too nuch power in singular individuals.
You are 100% right. People are unfortunately always going to link a great story to some political standpoint. Sometimes it’s good food for thought and other times it’s just better to enjoy the show for what it is.
I wouldn't say Eren is charismatic. More of a good example of what would happen if you keep beating down a victim into the edge. He became dangerous and gain unstopable willpower to achieve the freedom he desires. He doesn't have to be genius like Armin, strong like Mikasa and Levi, or charismatic like Erwin. Just simply willpower and luck of having a godlike power. You can create the perfect devil/monster through this.
@@yup7380 I'd say Eren is charismatic, just not in the traditional sense. He is very calm and collected, yet ruthless. People follow him because of his rebellious nature and competence. His charisma is largely on the readers more than the characters in the story, which is why Eren is basically the poster boy for cringe edgy sigma edits. Unfortunate but expected. Same thing happened to Paul's character, really. Lots of people, mostly young fans of Dune found him inspirational and cool and didn't care for the dark undertones of his rise to power. Frank Herbert made Dune Messiah out of spite, that's where he more blatantly shows the themes he wanted to present.
Also I raise you: both stories feature giant worms, and the abilities that those worms give their "hosts" (in Dune they drink the worm blood but yea...)
