- This is an electrical power unit designed to keep you comfortable when it’s time to take a break from the road.
The Kenworth Idle Management system, or KIMS for short, uses a high power alternator on the engine that charges the dedicated batteries while you drive. Once you’ve reached your destination, you’ve got the electrical power that you need to run the sleeper air conditioner, Espar diesel fired heater, television, refrigerator, or other hotel appliances. There are 12v outlets as well as 120v outlets that are kept live via a power inverter when the system is on.
Operation of the system is quite simple, with the key in the off or accessory position, you can power on the KIMS system. From there, turn on the HVAC controls and select the desired temperature and it will take care of the rest much in the same way that your home thermostat works. You can dictate if you would like for it to only cool, or heat the truck and also the fan speed if you’d like.
With the system, there’s no worries about depleting the batteries too far and disabling the truck. Once the system hits 11.3 volts, it will automatically shut down making sure that you have plenty of power to start and recharge the batteries. Also, there is a plug on the side of the truck that uses a 20A socket so you can hook the truck to shore power when available.

My display on the idle management system doesn't turn on. I also don't have a switch for the auto start on off on the dash. Is there another switch somewhere? I'm in a 2020

How much does the KIMS system add to the cost of the vehicle?
Is this available for the W9's as well?
Unfortunately it is not. There are a few aftermarket systems out there though.
So the “Dedicated batteries” aren’t really dedicated to electric apu? 🤦🏻♂️
They are, yes, but will work in conjunction with the others also when needed.
All I hear about this electric ac/heater are COMPLAINTS AND MORE COMPLAINTS. nothing like apu/ thermo king, etc.
It is a good system. It takes a bit of learning to know how to correct whatever issues they have, which can usually be fixed in a few minutes. If apu goes out it takes a few hours or days and a lot of money to fix.
