“People change. Feelings change. It doesn’t mean that the love once shared wasn’t true or real. It simply means that sometimes when people grow, they grow apart.”
an important lesson that I needed to learn, that we all do: don't ever allow our image of someone to become greater than who they actually are, it's not fair to anyone involved
+Sam Hanson I like to think about girls taking a big smelly turd, especially about girls I have a crush on, makes me realize that they're full of flaws just like me. (I had a summer once, It was the worst thing ever, I still hate/love her)
Yep I've made that mistake before. Just remembered her for all the good times and how beautiful and interesting she was. Thought of her being the one for me without thinking about her feelings.
The expectations vs. reality scene was one of the most iconic scenes I've ever seen in a movie. Simply earthshatteringly beautiful, this film is art poured out on a screen, poetry in motion.
Actually I write a song about 500 days of summer movie. If you like it dont forget to hit like & subscribe button thanks :) ruclips.net/video/vdc0ScoYurc/видео.html
I just love this movie especially the part where Summer said " I just... I just woke up one day and I knew...What I was never sure of with you." that line hits different
When you rewatch the movie you see how blinded tom was and how straightforward summer was about her feelings. She warned him so many times that all she wanted was a casual relationship and that he could stop it at any time he wished but tom became so obsessed with the fact that he thought he was the one for her and could change everything she believed in. The movie was through his eyes so the viewer was made to go more on his side.
She said she didn't want a serious relationship, and then she proceeded to make it about as serious of a relationship as possible. She couldn't even respect her own boundaries, so how could she expect Tom to respect them as well?
@@mosaicbrokenhearts1113 No. The first girl's name is summer, and when that ended they wanted to show that life doesnt stop. He met someone new, after summer, she was autumn
Yeah, that's true. I've already read the full sypnosis in IDMB and now I'm not sure If I will watched the movie. Good story though, I just don't like what happened.
I think that’s the point of the movie. Tom ignored Summer when she said she didn’t want anything serious but Tom ignored that. That as humans we believe in the hope that there is a happy ending n that the person you really like will change their minds about you. That we don’t want to believe in the hursh reality of what’s presented to us n believe in the fantasy of what we see in our make believe world.
The reason a lot of people think summer is a bitch is becuase the directors were amazing at really helping you sympathize with toms character. As you watched the film for the first time you were supposed to fall in love with summers character just as tom had....somewhat ignoring the obvious problems with how he idolized her. The realization about the perspectives are meant to come after rewatching the film. A really amazing film.
True. when I was younger watching this for the first time I thought the same ...summer is a bitch , how dare she break his heart. but now being in my 20s rewatching it it's like..well she did from the start tell him she didn't want to be with him and he idolized every other part ignoring the signs.
LV Adams i have been fall in love similar to tom. As you know i must see her happy with another man. so sad! i really really like tom characterize , i can see yourself into Tom.
Dong Le yes i really like tom's character and do feel for him because while she did state what she wanted (which was to NOT be in a relationship) she did still interact with him like they were..which is very confusing and messed up. Unfortunately a lot of people my age range (20s) date like this now.
This movie could be seen in two perspectives. I hate how people call Summer is a bitch for leaving Tom while she has clearly stated that she doesn't want a serious relationship at the beginning. I think she might be aromantic, or maybe she just doesn't love Tom back. If you already watched the movie, you could see that Summer actually made an effort for their relationship, right after their big fight. She came back to Tom and told her about her previous relationships. She tried, because maybe she thought that she could love Tom, but at the end she still doesn't have any feelings for him. And no, you can't force yourself to love someone. So yeah, the best thing is to cut it before the other one got too invested in the relationship, in this case, Tom was already too far gone for Summer. I think he fell in love with the idea of Summer, not Summer herself, and got his heart broken. This is why I love this movie so much. This is not a love story, this is a story about love
Peacelover1212 It is actually a mistake for one to >try< and love someone. You just feel it. If you cannot simply love someone whom you spent a lot of time, shared secrets, kissed and let in your house, you won't be able to love them. I think she liked him, but wasn't in love him. So, her biggest mistake was to let things go that far when it was very clear that he had feelings for her. His biggest mistake was trying to go serious with her when she stated from the beggining that she wasn't looking for a serious relationship. But none of them is 'guilty'. They both made mistakes. Just like in real life, when it concerns our feelings, we usually can't see things the way they are and we don't want to. That's why this movie is very accurate. :)
***** hha its fine. Everyone can share a lil bit about their own stories. But yeah, we just love to romanticize everything don't we? The ideal partner, living the dream of spending your life together with them. We see them as this one big epic beautiful love story and at the end, we fail to notice the real side of our partner because we're just too busy falling in love with the idea of us being together. Damn I just love this movie so much. And sorry to hear that your relationship didn't work out :(
Albert Arriola true that dawg. majority all been thru this and all I have to say , it's one of the most happiest at first painful experiences that we witness
This movie perfectly represented how it feels like to be in Unrequited Love. The sadness, regrets of what you could have done differently, the absence of logic, the frustration of unable to change the mind of object of affection and the constant question of "Why you can't choose me?" in which only strengthens the curiosity and determination to find the answer that makes you feel insecure and depressed because at the end, you still don't know the answer because you are hopelessly in love.
I love how this movie made people think. I first watched this when I was 17. At first, I hated Summer's character and I sympathized with Tom. I also felt it was cruel of Summer to just drop Tom just like that. But I guess the movie was designed to offer different perspectives by depicting a reality that we all refuse to talk about when it comes dating - rejection and closure. The movie tells us to love Summer Finn and fall deeply for Tom for loving Summer the way he did. We were told from the beginning that this is not a love story- because its true- the film was not a cliche. It shows our expectations (Tom's expectations) and how our expectations can be different from our reality. The movie shows a cycle- you meet someone, know everything about that person, develop feelings and love that someone, - everybody thinks you should be together and you believe so too - the movie portrays what happens when things don't go as planned knowing at the end of the day you both want different things. And sometimes (in Summer' case), you just meet someone who changes your mind and does so effortlessly. I just love the complexity of this film.
Just about to write some thing like this. Tom is such a fucking insecure, selfish crybaby. I used to be like this. YT, google is filled with dating coaches (like "Hitch" from the movie) I now see how men are supposed to be: assertive, gentlemen, secure, passionate and have a sense of direction.
What the?....because he lacks certainty and assertiveness. He's insecure about Summer being w/ other people and he's doubtful about his confidence. A real man would just suck it the fuck up, get rejected and move on....Have options.
This is the most honest movie ever. Like really a movie that happens in real life man. Summer knows what she wants and what she feels. Tom is just blinded of how he thought he feels
How exactly does she know what she wants? In my eyes she was very indecisive and selfish. She didn't thought about his feelings, not once. She didn't care to listen to him, didn't notice his emotions. She didn't really love him, she couldn't love him because she is a very hurt person, that has become this selfish woman that damages pure souls. I bet the man she married didn't love her as much as Tom did. And Tom now is hurt forever
This is quite a sad film. Kind of slaps you hard in the face, waking you up from your fantasies and telling you that sometimes, the person whom you thought you will spend forever with is just not the same person whom you'll end up with. Although, in the end, it makes you realize that you have to move on and continue to pursue your own happiness. :)
You know, people usually check the comments on trailer videos because they want to know if they are worth watching or not, yet most of you have written what happens in the ending? Thanks...
soem1997 actually no. every movie trailer comment I read of a movie that is already out usually spoils the movie. I usually read the comments to find out what happens at the end. is the ending really sad where the main character dies or is the movie a waste of time.
Abigail :P its worth the watch just dont expect a happy ending. Like the narrator tells u straight up not a love story amazing movie just pissed me off
that could be 1 of 1000 big whoop. It's definitely at the top of my list in terms of 1 of the best movies i've ever watched. And by at the top i mean End.
Everything about this movie is literal perfection - Soundtrack - Pacing - Direction - Chemistry between the two characters ... legit everything about this film is perfection
I just got rejected by a girl yesterday. We had no mutual friends or anything. I just remember the very first time I saw her and that beautiful smile two years ago. Yeah, I had been crushing on her for two years. I was always a nervous wreck whenever I saw her and she noticed me doing so too. She never tried to avoid me so I though I was fine and after two years I mustered all my courage and said hi and gave her a compliment, asked for her name and right after that she rejected me. Didn’t even give me a chance to introduce myself and it hurt. She wasn’t even interested in knowing my name... I just wanted to put what I’m feeling right now somewhere. Thanks to anyone who reads it
The most important thing I learned from this movie is "Don't expect anything & the way you think about someone might not be same with their thinking ways"
That movie is such a life story, guys. I had been dating my first girlfriend for 5 years. It's been a year since we broke up. The situation is not really the same as in 500 DAYS OF SUMMER and I would even say it differs a lot, but I was all the same romantic about that relationships and prejudiced about it like Tom did. At first my GF was felt the same way. However, I know for sure that after we broke up she got over that easier than me. And all this year I was thinking like WTF? Why is that I still think of her like she was The Only One, while she's already dating another guy and I also had a new GF through this year. And I asked her last month to meet me 'cause I felt I was so lost and I had so many questions on why it ended up like that. And you know what? I was looking at her and I couldn't find anything I was in love with her early on. That was like a completely different person sitting next to me, neither better nor worse. Just... a stranger. I had so many questions to ask before we met but I realised that I simply don't need all the answers anymore. I felt like she made a long way towards things that really matters to her and I just wasted the whole year while she lived her own life. That moment I understood that the real issue was in my own incapability to move forward as a Man rather than a grown up child. And the funny thing is that 500 DAYS OF SUMMER was the first movie we watched together and both of us felt there were something wrong about that. However, 6 years later all of a sudden I decided to watch that film once again and it helped me so much to look at myself from the different perspective.
Every romantic moment you have ever shared with someone had two perspectives. Yours and theirs. So, never assume that these little things that mean so much to you, also mean something to them. Relationships evolve at their own pace for both people involved so whoever you date will not always be at the same place you are emotionally. You could be stuck feeling like its summer while the other person is starting to feel snow falling.
This movie described the perfect definition and feelings of being in the new love, it also showed that sometime you're all what's left for you.Sometimes you can't have good things but u can get better ones. No matter who are you, you'll get your heart break only to get it mended by someone who's actually worth it, someone for whom you'd wish you get those scars and breaks everyday only to get repaired by them.
Also the look on his face when they meet in the park, the last look he does with his head tilted, it showed how much he wished not to accept the reality. The pain in his eyes made it the perfect scene in the movie.
ExtiKT She said at the start that she wasn't looking for a relationship. And she said to Tom that she wasn't looking for anything serious later on. He wanted more than she wanted.
ExtiKT Oh cmon that's how life is. In love is hard to put rules,is not a fair game. Yeah people are selfish and people are confused and people need self-gratification. Love means risk and yeah some people might be burned.
YES. Thank you! This movie is sooo layered. It's a discussion of whether or not things are left up to fate, whether there is any validity to the concept of true love, destiny, Ect. And it's about our being fixated on our ideals about love, life, and the future and how our utopian ways of thinking are not always what we think they are and how we're often wrong about the plans we have for ourselves. They don't end up together, but she teaches him thing, and he teaches her things. They both develop and grow as characters from each other. He finally pursues his dream of being an architect, and she does the unexpected; she falls in love with someone. It's a cute movie, really. And it's thought provoking. People are really missing the bigger picture here. A
watching this movie tonight really helped me. i see myself in tom a lot. though ofc i still love summer! haha, i was head over heels for this guy. we were together for 528 days. the only difference is he did think i was the one and he promised me. but one day he woke up and said he doesn't love me any more. he realized i wasn't the one. i love tom because i see myself and i love summer because i see him. though i wish things were different. i truly hope he's happy. and i hope i meet my very own autumn someday.
Such a good film. Had a huge impact on me in high school, and it's still relevant today. You envision something so real and palpable that it makes you blind, almost obsessed. Unfortunately you realize you can't have the one you want. So you occupy yourself with whatever is in reach.....you finally move on thinking destiny and soulmates is bullshit, but then you find someone willing to re-ignite your fire.
I am so obsessed with this film. I’m not claiming it is the best film ever made but it is certainly what has resonated the most with me personally. Everything; the characters, acting, editing, the soundtrack but most of all the general themes and messages that are not expressed through cinema in many places. I can’t recommend this film more it may have the same effect on you aswell!
I just watched this movie for the first time. I took time to try and understand both perspectives. Though I do agree that summer didn’t have to be in a relationship with Tom, she pretty much was. She said she just wanted to be friends and didn’t want anything serious, but she did everything that people in serious relationships do. I don’t know anyone in a situationship that tells their whole life story, goes on dates, sleeps in the same bed, and holds hands. Situationships typically consist of sex and that’s it. She wanted everything in a serious relationship without the labels. And that wasn’t fair to Tom. She knew from the beginning that he believed in love and she’s the one that pursued him. If she didn’t want anything serious she should have cut things off the moment he got attached in stead of coming back to his house in the rain and dangling herself in front of him. Also her dancing with him after they had split up and she was seeing someone else?? She loved the attention. She should’ve just left him alone
Tom's projecting what he wants from her. The dancing clip you said basically tells the entirety of the movie. Tom was expecting something from Summer when they were dancing (Tom didn't know Summer was engaged), but Summer just wanted to dance. After that, Tom saw the ring and got devastated because after the dance he was expecting to get back with her. Thus the Expectation vs. Reality thing. The entire movie is about Tom projecting onto Summer, loving his created idea of her, and not loving Summer for who she really is. Summer saw this. Nonetheless, both are awful characters who could've done something to prevent their demise. Tom could've stayed realistic, Summer could've cut it off earlier.
Always believe in what they say.. she was doing those things cause she still liked him, but didn’t love him, didn’t see a future. People always hope that they’ll change their mind, but they won’t (the majority I guess 😂) 🤷🏻♀️
i don't know why so much people are hating on summer or the whole movie. i just love love love this movie, everything about it, the soundtracks, the characters, everything just makes me in love with this movie. one of those movies that you will never get bored watching.
i was in highschool when i saw this movie with my friends. I watched it with my first love next to me. Everyone ofcourse, thought that she was my bestfriend but she was more than that. The ending of this movie made me cry because it made me realize that there's a huge probability that me and my first love would end up that way - not being together .. because we're still young and on top of that, we're both girls. When the movie ended, I hugged her so tight and bawled inside the school's comfort room. She was crying as well. I badly wish time stopped during that moment because it hurt me so much to think that i can never end up being with the person i love the most - that she's probably marry some guy who deserves her one day. It's been years and we did part ways. Four years and I'm still thinking of you. You'll always have a special place in my heart, my Summer.
I was thinking I was the only one who went through it in my first love, until I saw the movie and read your guys comments. Then I started to feel happy with myself and carring less about my girlfriend. When we started dating she said she didn't believe in ture love, now she loves me madly and i still like her but I love me even more. Like Carlos Drummond de Andrade says: Be happy without reason is the truest form of happiness. We're both pretty fine now.
He is grounded, emotional, his feelings run deep, he is boyfriend material and evertthing most girls would ask for, while she is spontaneous without any plans.. you can not count on her, she is like the wind indeed. Well if i want to sound objective i would say it is a story about 2 people who just don't clip. Different mentality, perspectives or needs. But i will be subective enough to say that some people just don't deserve the pure and deep love of those who really care.
"I love the way she makes me feel"... This line is so crucial to how he perceives their relationship. She was a whole ass human being but instead of loving HER, he loved the way she made HIM feel.
Which describes how almost all women describe their relationship. Funny how women notice that bc the guy said it. How many women have you heard describe how they love HIM? Almost non existent. Women demand to be the center and to be worshipped. You comment just proves that.
I had a crush for ten years even when i had relationship with someone else, i still fell in love with her. After i broke up, i was so happy we had finally met for the first time this year. I really thought she was ‘the one’. We’ve dated four times but she just didn’t seem interested in me. She told me the idea of relationship was stupid bcus you had to stay for one person for the rest of your life. She reminded me of Summer and i am Tom who believes there is ‘the one’. My expectation is killing me. I’m starting to believe that love is bullshit, well bcus IT IS.
Everyone's asking for: '500 Days of Summer' in Summer's perspective. Or '500 days of Autumn'. Honestly, I think the movie is completely entirely perfect just how it is and I feel satisfied, inquisitive but satisfied.
People need to understand that If you don't truly love someone then you can't be with them. I mean think about it... would it be better to be married to someone that doesn't truly love you or for them to break up with you so that you can find someone else. That's why people start to cheat or people get divorced it wouldn't have ended pretty if she stayed with him. She just didn't love him. I think she tried to but she just couldn't. You can't make yourself love someone she needed to leave him for both of their sakes because she couldn't see herself marrying him, she didn't love him as much as he loved her. But this was a great movie, i loved it.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt speaking to Playboy, however, he said: "The (500) Days Of Summer attitude of 'He wants you so bad' seems attractive to some women and men, especially younger ones. But I would encourage anyone who has a crush on my character to watch it again and examine how selfish he is." "He develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies. He thinks she’ll give his life meaning because he doesn’t care about much else going on in his life." "A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them," he concluded. "That’s not healthy. That’s falling in love with the idea of a person, not the actual person."
+Fauzia So true.I also felt that she tried loving him but sometimes things just don't work between two people. In that case it's better to lose the attachment in stead of cheating afterwards.
I watched this movie 3 years ago. This is one of the best movie I have ever watch in my entire life… and the song “sweet disposition” still my favourite song…
I love this movie. It's very realistic in a way like that's life and life isn't a fairytale. You don't always get the ending you want and just because something doesn't work out doesn't mean life's over. Just as there's no such thing as a happy ending or happily ever after, there's no such thing as a bad ending. The end of something signifies the start of something new and maybe something better
Ann Rb Well many closed minded male viewers take the view that Summer is a cold, callous bitch and their opinion leads people on the other side to consider the film sexist. Really though, Summer isn't meant to be seen as the bad guy in the film, and people who see her that way are as closed minded and shallow as the character Tom. The film takes the stereotype of the manic pixie dream girl, but turns it around at the end when she leaves him. The audience, as well as Tom, suddenly realise that she actually is her own person, and the whole time she and Tom were together she was wanting something different to him. We see everything through Tom's eyes, so we don't really notice that earlier since he doesn't either. The film, in many ways, busts that Manic Pixie Dream Girl archetype and provides a more realistic views at how relationships work, where both parties are their own person with their own desires.
alexf02071999 wao thank for explaining it, u did a great jod :), but not only males have that view ( sommer is a cold woman) some women do too :P, u were so right about the fact that we only see this relationship trough tom´s eyes ..and just and the very end they show us what really was going on- something that is SO TRUE with almost every relationship many tend to idealize their partner. must be that old saying- Love is blind.
Ann Rb Yeah you're right, I shouldn't have made the assumption that only male viewers think that way, though they seem to be the ones who complain about it the most.
Somehow I can relate to the movie. My ex and I broke up because it felt more than a friendship rather than a relationship. The love is just there but it turned out to be different kind of love now. We're still good friends, he's moving on and I'm still stuck here thinking about the idea of being with him. It sucks as hell but love never change, people does and there's nothing wrong about it
this movie teach me that "A guy and a girl can be just friend, but at one point or another, they will fall for each other, maybe temporarily, maybe at the wrong time, maybe too late or maybe forever"
That happens 1% of the time. Women HATE friends first! It shows her that men lack: assertiveness, balls. Don't be brainwashed by a movie. I'm from LA and majored in Film/Tv. I'm an AV TEch. I used to work in Hollywood.
The thing is, not everyone wants to fall in love. Not everyone believes in falling in love. There are Toms and there are Summers. And yes, it sucks that Summer couldn't call in love with Tom, but it sucks that Tom expected that out of Summer.
The Wolfmother track in this movie is such a rocker. I love how the director incorporated it. He starts bouncing that ball in sync with the kick drum. He finds the pulse of hope and renewal after the darkness. He finally starts seeing the light through the awful fog of heartbreak. Such a powerful sequence done so beautifully. "Well I can see you girl, can you....Seeee meeeeee???!!!!" Yea man 😁
I can see myself in summer. I know I don't want a serious relationship while I'm young because I'm not ready to start a family. But I'd want that epic romance. But if you indulge yourself in that romance Someone will get hurt. romance doesn't last forever so I'd chose someone who'd I beleive would stay with me forever and build a life together. However people like Tom who idolize you make you doubt their ability to build a life together because you are not that perfect girl he sees and so once he realizes that it would be too late with 3 kids and a mortgage. It's better to find someone who understands you who you are rather than who they beleive you to be.
There's nothing wrong with wanting a serious relationship at a young age. Starting a family is completely different and you can still have a serious relationship without that yet. I mean if you're dating/seeing someone, if spending your life together isn't the goal, what is? You like wasting time? Also, any kind of romance is pain, be it the "nothing serious" type or the been together for years type. Regardless they all hurt differently. Just be yourself, if you're not the serious type then don't lead someone who wants something serious. Time is precious and people like that don't want to waste it. But if you want something long, sweet, and MEANINGFUL, be serious, but i warn you, it's gonna take two of you. And take this from someone who's been on both sides. The best things in life are shared.
***** Romance doesn't last forever? That's because you're too fucking young to understand that the previous generations before you (i.e. me) had real romance that lasted an entire lifetime. Get that fucking modern crap shit mentality out of your head and start looking back at your grandparents and such. Romance does last forever! I know many elders who lived their entire lives without cheating and they were happily together in love! So FUCK YOU! Damn, I'm good son.
Jhepoy Dizon "serious" in my definition meaning life long relationship. Im no where near mature enough to know what i want in life or relationship wise so i wouldnt want to date someone with the intention of finding "the one" to build my life with. I think dating gives you experience being with someone else and devoting your time to another and not just yourself. Because i think it's easy to fall in love but hard to stay in love thats why i dont want to find "the one" early on. because who i am now, immature, will not be who i am 10 years from now. 10 years from now i may be mature enough to work through all the hard times with my SO but now i might think "its not meant to be" or "its too hard" or whatever. age changes things and once youre older you know a little more about what you want and youre more willing to settle down. (im speaking this mainly of guys tbh) Also spending 50+ years with someone is really fucking hard. if i can shave off like 10 years then i think it will make the hapiness last longer
My favorite movie of all time. I love the random breakout musical, and the Harrison ford part. The ending with the nod to the audience where he looks at the camera is just awesome
Maybe this is a harsh lesson in life for some of us to go through, its a very touching movie if you can relate to the events and storyline and always reminds me that in life people will eventually forget what you said but never forget the way you made them feel.
Trailer makes it look like a classic 'i wanna puke'' romantic film. I've watched many romantic movies, some by my will and some because i was made to (you know) and i hated 90% of them but the only one that i actually liked is 500 days of summer (eternal sunshine comes as a second but very far away from this). This isn't a real romantic movie after all, its philosophy and the whole message is closer to truth and real world.
She didn’t want to get attached bc he didn’t have any ambition. She didn’t either but that doesn’t matter to girls like her. She made a comment about him being an architect if he wanted to be, the new guy got her a huge ring, she has no career aspirations. She dumped him bc he had no real income or drive
I fell in love with this girl in high school. I refused to date anyone else until I had her. We unknowingly went to the same university together on the other side of the country. I knew it was destiny. But she rejected me because she said, “love happens when you have it all figured out, when we’re young, you’re not supposed to love.” I haven’t loved anyone else since. It’s so cold now. Why is love worse than death?
I love this movie. Watched it so many times: Before I love anyone. After I broke up my first love. After I got my second love. After I am in love for years. Everytime, it's just different.
Summer keeps him hanging, playing and sleeping with him and a guy who doesn't even have one scene in this stupid movie marries her. The narrator is right it isn't a love story, it's a stupid story.
cesar Oswaldo Not a stupid story, it's a real story. It captures something alot of guys have gone through in an very relatable way. , It's real not a cheesy love story and It's not escapism, that's why this movie is amazing.
Whenever I feel that I may fall in love again, I watch 500 Days of Summer, it always brings me back to my senses. To fall in love again after getting your heart broken into pieces is not easy. It's been years, and I am still afraid of what happened in the past, may happen again. The day I was left to suffer is the day I lost all the love and trust I had in me. Closure is all what I need and I guess I'll never get one. I don't know how others move on with their lives without any regrets. Why can't I do the same ? There is a string attached which I can't seem to break. If there's someone out there who can help me with some advice, I will really appreciate it.
best movie about a modern couple i've ever watched, along with the probably best movie soundtrack i've heard in a long time. this movie has so much heart. beautiful thing. 10 years old this year already, and i already start to feel nostalgic for the years around 2008-2010. the quality the movies had back then was unique, they had their own certain vibe. if anyone gets me.
I can see how it would be difficult to understand the real meaning of this movie. Same as how Tom romanticized Summer, it's easy to romanticize the typical boy-meets-girl scenario and villify the girl who breaks that. But this kind of thing actually happened to me in my last relationship and it felt truly disgusting to be objectified, even if it was in a 'beign' way. I had no idea it could feel so bad when all he did was like me, but since he had such a stubborn view of who I was (which was erroneous) and ignored everything I said or felt, I felt so trapped and repulsed. He's still living in this fantasy of "being in a mission to get [me] back." I know he doesn't mean ill, but it's terrifying and I wish he would stop.
I watched this movie long time ago. the first time I watched it, i realized something. First is that, it doesn't matter how long two people spend each others company but how both of them spend their time while they're still together. With Summer, there's no reciprocation of love. The guy is already too invested to Summer while the later, tried but still ended up cold like the first time. Here, I learned that you can't force someone to love you back. That a person will never be ready to someone she or he can't love. It's sad but this movie is on top of my favorites. I just watched it again and after how many years with all the experiences I had with my love life, i must say this movie speaks truth. It happens in real life. It happened to me.
This is what I felt when I watched the movie both of them are in the right and the reality in this movie is too much to take. In the beginning Summer says she doesn't want a relationship but when she learns Tom has a crush on her she makes the first move tells Tom she wants to keep it casual . Tom on the other hand is delusional(or awkward) in the beginning he judges her without really knowing her based on his friends remark and making assumptions based on her comments like when he asks her how the weekend she replies it was 'GOOD'. He assumes himself that she had sex . he idolizes her and thinks she also likes him the way he likes her without really expressing his feelings for her ( when in love you feel like the girl you are in love with has all the attention on you even if they are not paying you any attention your mind just makes it up ). When they get into a relationship Tom agrees they won't label it but as time goes by they get more attached and finally she shares something with Tom that she hasn't told anyone and this makes Tom feel special ( well you can't really blame the guy for hoping it would work out if it's going to be some guy in the future then why not him). But things don't work out in the end and they break up. Initially Tom only remembers the good times(as would anyone going through a tough breakup) but then later on remembers all the bad things as well. This film really hits home when she is right away finds her soulmate and marries him and that's life you can't really know when or who you fall in love with even if you do it all right you may not be the person and that's perfectly fine and that's how the world works. And eventually you may or may not find your soulmate . People often use the term unconditional when they are referring to love and I think that's the part where Tom's delusion of perfect summer plays in . Even if there are bad signs Tom ignores it loving her unconditionally holding her in high regard I don't think he's objectifying her it's just the way it is . Whenever you fall in love you want people to meet your expectations and when they don't you feel disappointed and hope for the day they reciprocate , sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. End of the day that's life . Knowing when to end on this cycle of expectations is the key to healthy relationships. Your brain knows it but your heart won't listen. You can't blame Summer for not feeling the way Tom did. Just felt like ranting after watching this movie today. thank you for reading till the end, cheers.
I actually felt like Summer was starting to fall for him but couldn't bring herself to accept it. It was not mentioned in the movie but when she saw that wedding movie, she cried a lot and then the way she was treating him kind of made me believe she had an unpleasant experience beforehand and was afraid to fully commit to Tom because she was afraid of it happening again. It's also strongly hinted at when you see her holding his hand the way she did the last time they saw each other.
In the wedding movie the 2 people got married and they were smiling. Then about 10 seconds later they stopped smiling and they knew it was a mistake to get married because they weren't happy. This made summer sad because she felt this way with Tom.
ZachBuckley The wedding movie? You're talking about THE GRADUATE, one of the greatest movies EVER!! If you loved this movie, check it out. Your definition of what is a good movie will change forever!
When i broke up with my boyfriend he just asked me one thing, to watch this movie. I did and cried for hours. I did give him a little hope but never saw as ahead as he did. My life is full of responsibilities and instead of making him a strength he became a daily task in my life. we were in senior year in high school and just dated for 2.5 months. If i could go back in past i would only change how i portrayed myself infront of him. He asked me out again, after a year. I declined politely not because he is not a great guy but because im so so so busy with my life and have my family as my first and foremost priority. I remember not giving him the attention and love he deserved even when we were together, i just couldnt do that again to him. I have had my share of trauma, and i want to help myself and heal on my own before getting into anything serious. I just wish i didnt hurt him the way i did. I never wanted to. I never got with him with the intension of being casual, i wanted to see where it went, that is why i never told him that i would go, i wish i could see it in the very beginning where i would stand in a few months with him. I try my level best not to hurt people in my life but the way i hurt him, my heart aches, not because im not with him but because how i treated him. That is the difference between me and Summer she was explicit that it was casual, and therefore she isnt a villian but i am. I wish i wasnt but ig someone is always a villian in some story and this time i apologetically accept.

When we love someone, we hope they will feel the same, I suppose. He wasn't the first and won't be the last
She said she didn't want a serious relationship, and then she proceeded to make it about as serious of a relationship as possible. She couldn't even respect her own boundaries, so how could she expect Tom to respect them as well?
yup. but I feel like she could have stopped it bc she could see that he was in love with her

I was totally in denial when the narrator said that
23號風球 well i hope so, but there’s also expectations vs reality
***** yes. He fell in love with the idea of Summer, not Summer herself. And I wish people could just understand this.
True. when I was younger watching this for the first time I thought the same ...summer is a bitch , how dare she break his heart. but now being in my 20s rewatching it it's like..well she did from the start tell him she didn't want to be with him and he idolized every other part ignoring the signs.

+Peacelover1212 But what makes Summer a "bitch" was that despite the fact that she could see that Tom was so invested, she continued to lead him on.

Amiel Saquisame loved it!
@@cellardoor199991 why is he insecure?
What the?....because he lacks certainty and assertiveness. He's insecure about Summer being w/ other people and he's doubtful about his confidence. A real man would just suck it the fuck up, get rejected and move on....Have options.
He acts like Ross from friends. Pussy
This is the most honest movie ever. Like really a movie that happens in real life man. Summer knows what she wants and what she feels. Tom is just blinded of how he thought he feels
Yes, you are right, tom thoughts are driven by his past, see my edit of this movie , just 2 minutes
ruclips.net/video/KqqqKZFgNe4/видео.html
And one day Summer will become a divorced deadbeat mom. She does whatever she wants regardless of who it hurts

I think you have a very good story., I also mean that one can get a lesson from it.
Well at least you got closure now and grew up as a person 🙂

Every romantic moment you have ever shared with someone had two perspectives. Yours and theirs. So, never assume that these little things that mean so much to you, also mean something to them. Relationships evolve at their own pace for both people involved so whoever you date will not always be at the same place you are emotionally. You could be stuck feeling like its summer while the other person is starting to feel snow falling.
Thank you for this comment - perfectly sums up about what the movie is about and how it all pans out in the dating world.
This trailer has the most incredible comment section ever.

"Then get over her"
"I don't wanna get over her. I wanna get her back"

That's not love. That's immaturity. People need to be able to handle rejection and face the fact that they don't want you.

Such a good film. Had a huge impact on me in high school, and it's still relevant today. You envision something so real and palpable that it makes you blind, almost obsessed. Unfortunately you realize you can't have the one you want. So you occupy yourself with whatever is in reach.....you finally move on thinking destiny and soulmates is bullshit, but then you find someone willing to re-ignite your fire.

felt that
oh yes, the good ol' torture.
Exactly! Perfect!

Good, L*sbianism and Homosexuality is Bad.
This is not a Love Story,
This is a Story About Love.
But i will be subective enough to say that some people just don't deserve the pure and deep love of those who really care.
exactly, she doesn't deserve his love.
"I love the way she makes me feel"... This line is so crucial to how he perceives their relationship.
She was a whole ass human being but instead of loving HER, he loved the way she made HIM feel.
Damn
Which describes how almost all women describe their relationship.
Funny how women notice that bc the guy said it.
How many women have you heard describe how they love HIM? Almost non existent.
Women demand to be the center and to be worshipped. You comment just proves that.
Been there done that 😔
My all time favorite film.
Same here !!

+Malu Arreguin I wish that they could make 500 days of autumn
really?..
this movie changed everything I thought about love
Dip Rahat Alam me too -_-
I had a crush for ten years even when i had relationship with someone else, i still fell in love with her.
God bless u bro
Everyone's asking for: '500 Days of Summer' in Summer's perspective. Or '500 days of Autumn'. Honestly, I think the movie is completely entirely perfect just how it is and I feel satisfied, inquisitive but satisfied.
Ikr...500 days autmn would mean he'd break up with autumn as well.We don’t want that.
None of it would work, in my opinion
But I would encourage anyone who has a crush on my character to watch it again and examine how selfish he is."
"He develops a mildly delusional obsession over a girl onto whom he projects all these fantasies. He thinks she’ll give his life meaning because he doesn’t care about much else going on in his life."
"A lot of boys and girls think their lives will have meaning if they find a partner who wants nothing else in life but them," he concluded.

So many people misunderstood this film. So many.
explain it then..
Ann Rb Yeah you're right, I shouldn't have made the assumption that only male viewers think that way, though they seem to be the ones who complain about it the most.
one of the finest movies of all time. psychological, detailed, brilliant acting.simple amazing. kudos to writers & the director.
Somehow I can relate to the movie. My ex and I broke up because it felt more than a friendship rather than a relationship. The love is just there but it turned out to be different kind of love now. We're still good friends, he's moving on and I'm still stuck here thinking about the idea of being with him. It sucks as hell but love never change, people does and there's nothing wrong about it
I didn't know Katy Perry could act. :D
that was really funny, thank's)))
my mom said exactly same quotes...lol
We all thought so. We all did.
lol thats not katy perry its zooey deschanel
she is not katy perry....this actress was with jim carry too in Me Myslef and Irene.
this movie teach me that "A guy and a girl can be just friend, but at one point or another, they will fall for each other, maybe temporarily, maybe at the wrong time, maybe too late or maybe forever"
That happens 1% of the time. Women HATE friends first! It shows her that men lack: assertiveness, balls. Don't be brainwashed by a movie. I'm from LA and majored in Film/Tv. I'm an AV TEch. I used to work in Hollywood.
@@cellardoor199991 This just shows your lack of knowledge when it comes to women.
@@cellardoor199991 okay Mr. Pseudo-Tarantino
"Well I can see you girl, can you....Seeee meeeeee???!!!!"
Yea man 😁
Yesterday I saw this movie... I have to say one thing...
I saw myself being acted by Levitt...
so many relatable moments throughout man just wanted to give jgl a hug lol

0x28 yo you needa take a chill pill, maybe like 5 of them
Jhepoy Dizon "serious" in my definition meaning life long relationship.
Yo, Jhepoy, don't listen to that beotch. She's a whiner. No one wants to read her hour-long paragraphs.

My favorite movie of all time. I love the random breakout musical, and the Harrison ford part. The ending with the nod to the audience where he looks at the camera is just awesome
Funny how my perspective has changed each time I watched this movie over the past decade. This movie is eternal. ❤️
This isn't a real romantic movie after all, its philosophy and the whole message is closer to truth and real world.
misteraxl1 same here...these two are my absolute favourites....and are really different from other ones out there
Watch celestial and jesse forever.
This is the era when trailer has a narrator, nostalgia!
How can someone collect so many memories and all still not fall for eachother? He did but she didn't.
She didn’t want to get attached bc he didn’t have any ambition. She didn’t either but that doesn’t matter to girls like her. She made a comment about him being an architect if he wanted to be, the new guy got her a huge ring, she has no career aspirations. She dumped him bc he had no real income or drive
My heart shattered into a zillion trillion billion million pieces watching this.
Everytime i get rejected, i always watch this movie. Gonna watch it again for the 12th time.
This movie is amazing because it's not a love story, it's a life story.

this movie is so painful because it's what happens in real life! Real life stories usually don't have happy endings! So simple and real!
ya the reality usually sucks
Everyone wants 500 days of autumn but i just want 5 seconds of summer
+Faith Marino because who the fuck just wants 5 seconds of summer? xD I understand the band reference there but it doesnt actually make sense

The last 20 minutes of this movie is what makes it so great! ❤
best movie about a modern couple i've ever watched, along with the probably best movie soundtrack i've heard in a long time. this movie has so much heart. beautiful thing. 10 years old this year already, and i already start to feel nostalgic for the years around 2008-2010. the quality the movies had back then was unique, they had their own certain vibe. if anyone gets me.
after four years, this movie still depicts the story of my tragic life.
four years ago, i thought my girlfriend loved me.
damn bro hope youre doing better now
I can see how it would be difficult to understand the real meaning of this movie.
This movie has a place in my heart. Cool soundtrack too. Would definitely recommend 10/10

Misunderstood the movie she doesn’t want him
This looks like the cutest movie ever... Zoey Deschanel + Joseph Gordan Levitt!?! Freakin' love em'!!! Gonna have to watch this one soon...!
