Just stumbled onto your channel looking for Tool reactions. I really appreciate your research of the song before you listen. I was suprised to see that you have not listened to "The Pot" yet. That is typically the best intro into Tool for those that are unfamiliar with their music. I can't wait to see your reaction to that song. Keep it up my man!
Thanks for your support! ❤️ I been reacted to The Pot and Sober in one video but RUclips copyrighted & blocked it. I moved it to my Patreon before trying to reupload it. Here is the link. www.patreon.com/posts/92065497?
The fun part of this song is that it’s written in a mathematical equation that spans the universe and Everything in nature, but the lyrics are telling you to not think too much 🤣
Note on the Maynard 'clip': Maynard's lyrical composition was positively written to the sequence, up to and back from 8 and 13. The instrumental part (Bass, guitar, drums) was the happenstance Maynard 1st mentioned.. the time signatures turned out to be a number in Fibonacci sequence..987.
I appreciate the preparation for the song. I can't imagine trying to absorb it all the way you tried on a first listen but I respect the effort. It took me tons of listens to get what it means to me. For me, it's about trusting nature and chaos that we don't control and learning to live in the physical and spiritual together by riding the spiral and whatever it throws your way. Overthinking leads to inaction and we've spent our whole lives developing our intuition so we should trust it and go on life's journey and connect with the present.
The Fibonacci sequence in a nutshell: a sequence is a series of numbers which follow some pattern. They are commonly written with commas between the numbers to make things clear. Get some paper and write zero (comma), one. Add the previous two numbers that you've written(this is the rule/pattern). You should get one. Write that next. Then add the last two numbers you've written. You should get 2. Write that down. Continue this forever. It turns out that this sequence is very important in nature, geometrically speaking. It's easier to evolve things which build onto themselves rather than start from scratch.
You are so right saying that they are of a different kind. I remember when they came out. And it was the same thing. I couldn't put my finger on it but it seemed the more I listened to the music the more got revealed, and I would like the songs more and more as time went. That was in the early 90s and still now I discover new things and the music still grows on me. Crazy!
The song "Lateralus" by Tool is often cited for its mathematical intricacies, particularly its alignment with the Fibonacci sequence. However, the song's true essence may lie in its spiritual and transformative undertones, which can be likened to a psychedelic mystical experience such as one induced by 5-MeO-DMT, often referred to as "The God Molecule." The lyrics and music both seem to capture the essence of a journey from duality ("Black then white") to a more complex, colorful, and interconnected reality ("Red and yellow then came to be"). This progression mirrors the psychedelic experience, where one's perception shifts from the mundane to the incredibly intricate and interconnected. "As below so above and beyond, I imagine" could be interpreted as a nod to the Hermetic principle of correspondence, a concept often revisited in mystical and psychedelic experiences. It suggests that the microcosm and macrocosm are connected, a realization that can be profoundly transformative. The lines "Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind / Withering my intuition" reflect the limitations of the rational mind, a theme that is often encountered in psychedelic experiences. The rational mind can be a barrier to the deeper, more intuitive understanding of reality that psychedelics can offer. "Feed my will to feel this moment / Urging me to cross the line" captures the essence of surrender often required to fully embrace the psychedelic experience. It's about letting go of control, stepping over the line of ordinary perception, and embracing the "random" or the unknown. The repeated phrase "Spiral out, keep going" could be seen as an encouragement to continue exploring, to keep pushing the boundaries of understanding and experience. In the context of 5-MeO-DMT, this could be interpreted as an invitation to keep diving deeper into the layers of consciousness and the mysteries of existence. The musical composition itself, with its intricate rhythms and time signatures, could be seen as mimicking the complex, often indescribable nature of a psychedelic experience. The music is not just a backdrop but an integral part of the journey, guiding the listener through emotional and cognitive states that words alone could not capture. While the Fibonacci sequence aspect of "Lateralus" is fascinating, the song's true power may lie in its ability to capture the essence of a psychedelic mystical experience, both lyrically and musically. It serves as a musical roadmap to the kinds of transformative experiences that substances like 5-MeO-DMT can offer. The interpretation of music, especially something as complex and layered as Tool's "Lateralus," can be highly subjective and open to various interpretations. While the song is often discussed in the context of its mathematical intricacies, such as its alignment with the Fibonacci sequence, many fans and critics alike see deeper, more spiritual meanings in its lyrics and composition. While there's no definitive "truth" as to whether the song is explicitly about a psychedelic experience, the themes it explores-transcendence, the limitations of rational thought, interconnectedness-do resonate with the kinds of insights that people often report from such experiences.
Tool makes us all look things up and learn. That's what makes them great. We grow and become better. Ride the spiral to the end. You may just go where no one's been. 😉 Edit: Maynard is in Tool, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer. All are incredible and excellent in their own regard. If you really want to understand Maynard, explore his songs relating to his mother's aneurysm, starting with the Tool song, Jimmy.
Dont worry about figuring anything out, it's fine to not understand immediately. Just listen, thats all you need to do, it will all just start coming into focus for you when you're ready for it to. You only get to hear these for the first time once and believe me when I say that we are all incredibly jealous but excited for you to have an experience that we would give nearly anything to have again. #1- HOW its being said. #2- WHAT is being said. #3- WHY its being said.
Lateralus to me is probably the most complex of all songs by Tool. I would never recommend it as the second listen. 😂 I would go to a song like “Sober”, “Forty Six & 2”, “Vicarious” or “Parabol / Parabola” next, all amazing songs but musically a little easier to digest. I dig your seriousness though! 🌀🌀🌀
Tool is my favorite band. And I love Maynard’s other 2 bands as well. They are less complex and more accessible but for many people a lot more enjoyable, depending on what your thing is. I highly recommend both of the others. A Perfect Circle and Puscifer ✌️
They are my favorites as well. They have to be listened to back to back together. They got me through the unexpected sudden death of my mom I played them maybe 1000 times making the long drives to her hospital and hospice. Another great review is Pneuma. Start with the Pneuma album version, and then be blown away by the Danny Carey drum cam for Pneuma. It is incredible

The golden ratio (Fibonacci Sequence) is illustrated by a spiral
Glad you played the part where he said it was a dick joke. MJK is the ultimate troll.
