The SAD state of American Airlines to Hawaii

- On my first ever flight to Hawaii, I had the massive misfortune of flying American Airlines at their absolute worst. This was by far one of the worst flights I've been on in terms of literally everything. Crew, timeliness, service, seats, airplane, and especially airline. Was a horrible experience from start to finish. What could've went wrong, did go wrong. Hope you...try to "enjoy" the vid!

Man I wish American was good. I do. I used to love them, but they're a shell of their former self now. In the 8 years I've run my channel, the only two times I've ever had crew tell me to stop filming were both on American Airlines flights. For what it's worth... I complained directly to American's customer service team on both accounts. I quoted the rules, and explained how I wasn't breaking any of their, or the FAA's rules, and both times their customer service team agreed that the FA's were out of line and gave me 20,000 AAdvantage miles each time. Not that you'd want to fly AA again haha, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Great video as usual!
Thx mate! Damn I shoulda complained haha woulda had some more miles :D Yah it's really quite a shame...
Omg I watch both 0f your guys video
Virgin airlines, you need to ask the other passengers before you film however, that’s an international airlines. I’m sort of glad they have that rule because I don’t always like to be filmed. I know some other people might not understand that, but there’s some people people that have reasons for that.
As an airline crew, I strive to ensure everyone is comfortable and happy, especially on long flights. A second service is the bare minimum. Shame on you AA!
I would call American Airlines and report it to them, that behavior was very unacceptable. If anything That flight attendant needs to be fired for this
This is one of those live and learn flights that are not fun. I have learned to only take Hawaiian Airlines or Alaska Airlines to Hawaii. Hawaiian Airlines has fantastic, friendly, spirit of Aloha service along with food being served, even in economy and plenty of drink services and self-serve drink stations. Their A330s are comfortable. Alaska Airlines also has friendly service, plenty of drinks, food that can be pre-ordered before the flight, although they fly 737, but the Max is fairly comfortable in premium economy. I've learned that flying into Hawaii at night was depressing but the approach during the day, if the weather is good, is incredible and starts a Hawaiian vacation off right! I hope your stay was 100% better than the flight.
Glad to see your making aviation videos again, you do a really nice job putting them together
I hope I NEVER have to fly American Airlines again. EVER. In college I flew AA about once a month to go home for a weekend and had tons of mikes. Back then they were a decent airline. Today they are a faint as shadow of their former self. Sorry your first trip to the islands was so bad !
It seems to me that AA is just coasting on "at least we never dragged doctors or killed dogs" and "at least we never had an operational meltdown"
I flown Southwest numerous times, and I strongly agree that Southwest service, airplanes domestically, and even to little detail like their seats and lavatories are better. It’s a shame that American Airlines quality has gone downhill with their flight, attendants, seats, and interior. Also, besides the lame flight with American Arline’s hopefully your vacation to Hawaii with you and your family was 100% the best vacation ever.
I’m glad I get to watch the experience now, I loved the other video!!
aww, thank you for the heart. I always get so happy :D 🎉
I’m sorry for the AA experience on your first Hawaii trip. I can really see things changing about most of everything. I’ve never been on a flight that long or flew American in a while. My dad had to fly from Chattanooga to Toronto with a connection in Charlotte making it his first time flying American this year. I really want to fly on their CRJ 200s operated by Air Wisconsin now that it’s new to that airline.
Its funny because trans-Atlantic service is so much better on American Carriers than domestic flights and is only about 20 minutes longer if flying east from the east coast
Wow no map is ridiculous. Even on Southwest a moving map was provided on their streaming service. they also gave us 2 services and a snack pack on my flight to Hawaii.
This is ridiculous, even United would give a meal, great video!
My wife and I flew from Phx to Maui on AA 787. The plane was wonderful but the service was terrible. The flight attendants did not care one bit about service. One service on a 6 hour flight. We had flight attendants sleeping next to us. When the plane landed, the flight attendants wanted to get off the plane faster than the passengers. We will never fly AA to Hawaii again!
I honestly a couple years ago switched to NEVER flying AA again they are so bad compared to what it used to be. For me Southwest is really good but I don't always like the "pick your seat wherever" policy as it kinda creates uneeded stress finding a seat as a group on a packed flight.
I think Hawaiian has the best coach service to Hawaii.
I flew Southwest from BWI to SAN on a 5 1/2 hour flight. The crew came around with snacks and drinks twice. My point is that it is sad how AA didn’t bother to give service twice from PHX to Hawaii. So sad what AA has become.
and WN let you check 2 bags free
From what I remember they even came around twice on Las Vegas to Indianapolis. Really shows how much better they are than American Airlines.
AA was one of the first carriers to stop serving meal service they gave you a sack lunch as you boarded
Americans customer service ranks like dead last, their crew does not care a single bit about anyone. Spirit airlines crew is more friendly than American and that says something. If other airlines can please the customer more than American, there is something wrong.
In 2022, flew AAL from PIT to MCO with a connection in PHL. I didn't expect much service on the short AM hop to Philly. But, the service from PHL to MCO was bare bones with crusty FA's. The return trip from MCO-PIT with a connection in CLT, both legs had no service, the reason, turbulence, which there was none.
Me: "Never gonna fly AA again"
AA: "But I will make it so cheap you have no choice"
I had a bad and good AA experience on a trip from BOS-SXM via CLT. If you've been on American in the past couple years you may have noticed their safety presentations are automated announcements along with other announcements on all aircrafts not just regionals. I really don’t like that new feature AA has. On my BOS-CLT flight the FA's didn’t make a single live announcement and just used the automated ones. On the second flight was a very friendly crew that let me visit the cockpit before the flight.
Wow! American is definitely not what it used to be. Back in the day I flew coach to Maui on the now defunct Western airlines, and the service was impeccable. On a brighter note, Maui was the best. I hope you find it the same.Aloha!
Yikes! I flew on United Polaris back in September of 2021 non-stop from ORD-HNL and had lie-flat seat (essential for an 8-1/2 hour flight), got two full meals, tons of snacks, had a large television screen with maps, movies, etc. This AA flight is pathetic. I hope you didn't pay much.
They’re supposed to come by at least twice on a longer flight like that. It’s a lazy crew unless there were other factors prohibiting them from doing another service such as turbulence. But it’s supposed to be two services.
The Hawaiian A321neo is superior in every way plus every seat gets a meal (awesome sandwich) and pog and even Mai tais! We’ve flown it twice from oak to Lihue and they rule! We’re trying Alaska max9 in October too. Aloha! The good news about any airline to Hawaii = you’re going to Hawaii! But yeah you should have turned the camera on that Karen and told her you can film if you want.
If you're gonna be stuck in a long layover, Sky Harbor is probably one of the nicest (:
The Pheonix metro light-rail runs through the airport, so you have hours to burn can buy a metro day-pass and explore the city then return and go through TSA again.
American has REALLY gone down in quality since the pandemic. Nothing but issues, low quality food, and bad flight attendants. United or Hawaiian are the best options for flying out to Hawaii imo. They will actually feed you real food for such long flights, even though it is considered domestic flights. I Flew from ORD to HNL last year on United in Premium Economy, and got 2 full meals (I believe regular economy got 2 full meals as well), a lunch, being a hamburger that was fine, and breakfast, being french toast, that was legitimately really good- yes TWO full meals on a domestic US flight. They also came around 2 additional times offering drinks.
One small step for the Jazz guy, and one big step for Karen.
Report those clowns to American customer service and they may give you some miles.
AA sucks. Most of their flight attendants are busy gossiping or shooting videos for their Tik Tok or RUclips, to care about many service rounds.
I travel a lot for work and I think our regulators are clueless about a lot of these issues - real issues. A lot of eateries at the airport have not returned to full service, so your choices post-security is limited if you want to buy something. In my case, post-security at my home airport has almost no food option, not even a Starbucks. If you plan to bring something, then you have to be super careful... things like yogurt, small pack of salad dressing, peanut butter and so on, are not allowed because they are considered liquid/gel. I think flying any distance more than 2.5-3hrs without decent option for food is just inhumane. Most folks probably spend at least 1-2 hrs (or more) before departure getting to the airport, so they aren't likely to have opportunity to eat. These days, I usually get a sandwich or wrap at the supermarket before my flight, so I at least have something edible.
That sucks about the flight attendant on you for filming, and AA’s product is below average and needs improvement
I don’t know what it is, but everytime I’ve flown with American it’s been almost a worse experience than Spirit. They have no amenities like Delta, their flight attendants are always rude, and the planes are meh. That Karen flight attendant is like a perfect representation of American Airlines 😂
American Airlines seems to really have gone downhill. I remember one flight attendant a while back on a flight from PHX-LAS asked if it was legal to film. I now am tempted to avoid the mainline flights on AA. The Eagle flights on the other hand seem more chill. I live in Dallas now and i sure hope i never have issues filmimg out of DFW or DAL.
PHX airport brings back memories the days I worked at America West Airlines
I flew AA from SFO to MIA a few weeks ago and the flight attendants keep stopping me from making my trip report (filming), I was extremely pissed off. I will withdraw my membership from AAdvantage and never fly this dumb airline ever again!
Shame that Hawaiian only codeshares with JetBlue on the US mainland (will codeshare with the US Big 3 for interisland flights), so it would be difficult to fly HA/B6 from Pittsburgh unless you do a layover in NYC/BOS/FLL and LAX until JetBlue flies between LAX and PIT. But if you're still out on the West Coast, it would be an option now!
But honestly, not surprised at AA's (lack-of) economy service. JetBlue and Delta have the better economy products, with Southwest and Alaska behind them (they don't offer much but at least deliver on their promises), United is getting better, and then there's AA which is competing with the Spirits and Frontiers.
or flown Southwest where you can check 2 free bags and seat pitch on the 800s and maxs are just about as much as you had
I was on AA this past summer traveling internationally. My flights between Orlando to Dallas and back were no problem with the A321s or the FAs. However, my international flights with them were like night and day. My DFW to Seoul flight was five hours late and had a crew that decided to chat in the galley and not ask the gentleman in front of me in coach to put his seat back up for both meals and also for landing into Seoul. The return flight was Narita to DFW and that crew had the FAs walking through the cabin and friendly FAs.
5:25 MIA Pretzels go hard
Honestly AA should consider adding PTVs to their A321neos since they use them on routes like this ( they sometimes send 787-9s from PHX so thats when you should go to Hawaii if you fly AA )
Tbh at this point, the American Airlines economy experience is literally equivalent to low cost quality. It’s ridiculous how bad they are now. Literally bare bottom.
Flying into Maui is beautiful!
American Airlines has been racking up negatives for other you-tubers (and other people) this year also. Was hoping to hear something good. Oh well. The best airline to Hawaii used to be to go through Seattle and take Alaska Air. I used to do that run for business trips (lucky, I know.) They were always on time, had good food and were very friendly. No idea what they are like now though, but hoping they are still good.
As long as their planes are full don't expect any changes soon.
Alaska is still consistently good.
I know a lot of people don't really like United (for obvious reasons) but this video in a nutshell is why I always choose them over American if I have to fly a legacy airline.
Im flying AA from BNA to DFW to ICN. Almost 17 hours of flight and american was the cheapest option. Really hoping it goes somewhat smoothly.
That first leg is probably gonna suck, but the long haul international flights are pretty ok even in economy. I just went from DFW to AMS and it was nice enough. You should get 3 meals but I’m not sure since I haven’t been on a flight that long
Welcome aboard usAAir..... Aloha!
Yeah - American is getting pretty bad nowadays. Thanks for the info + video!
The economy section amenities and service on the Big Three are typically no better than Frontier or Spirit these days. I would say that Delta is the best of the three in my experience.
It’s a birthday party once I find out you upload
Just ask her what Part of 14 CFR states recording is illegal 😂
This 100%. They can't/won't, that would mess with their power trip.
Honestly I’ve had a similar experience with American recently, it’s a shame to see an airline which from the outside seems like a great one, but once you get to understand what they’re really like, it’s appalling. I always stick a GoPro to the window, and over 100 flights, I’ve only been told I wasn’t allowed to one time… take a guess at which airline that was…
Yah it's quite unfortunate...I've been told off a lot but AA is BY FAR the worst when i comes to snitchy FAs
I was lucky to get a non stop from ORD to HNL during COVID for dirt cheap. No real issues other than that they had to swap out the 777
Thanks for sharing. I haven't flown on American Airlines since 2017, so it is nice to hear your opinion.
Thank You for The Tip ✅. I’m flying Hawaiian tomorrow. LAX to Kona Hawai’i. It’s going to be awesome A321 Neo. Aloha Nui loa ✈️🌸🥂
I'm soooo mad that I have all these miles on AA. Anyone know of a good way to transfer them? I can fly BA, but the taxes are horrible with your "free flight" with miles.
Idk man...BA isn't much better these days than AA maybe even worse :/ I'd transfer to Alaska especially if ur on the west coast
Either that or try to dump ‘em on a Japan Airlines flight if you wanna take a fun vacation
This doesn't bode well for my upcoming trip to Hawaii on AA. At least I'm going through DFW so maybe the service will be marginally better.
Same. Slightly worried now.
AA can also stand for Asshole Airline 🤣. All jokes aside, airline employees need to knock it off with the “it’s a federal offense to film on an airplane and in the airport”. I bet they only say this because they personally don’t want to be on camera. I’m sorry to hear that the crew were giving your sister and you a bad time. Shame on them! Flight attendants probably forget how much people pay for flights even in economy! I’ve experienced similar problems on delta back in 2021 with a few flights with FA’s who were rude.
Also, that Karen working for American Airlines had some kind of nerve to go up to you and purposely start trouble just for her own ego.
Oh one Better! I booked our 30th anniversary to Canada to Vancouver via through DFW (CHA - DFW - YVR) 11 months in advance, First/Business, paid in full. Only to have a flight changed a month before our departure. Got bump out of first class to main cabin extra. AA excuse was all the seat were book ahead of time?!?! Did I not do that??? One agent I spoke to may have let out a little more than she should have. That is seem to her that a few passengers got privilege status/miles/top tier, something along those lines, had first choice. AA, an over price airline.
I remember when my flight got delayed I had to wait 9 ours in Washington 😭😭
@Chris Jazz that sucks man. i'm so sorry,. i would book with breeze or southwest in the future during out of the country travels
I’ve flown both AAL & DAL to Hawaii from Phoenix, LA & SLC. From my experience DAL & AAL use pretty much the same equipment and crew back and forth. In DAL’s case lots of FAs going all the way back to Western Airlines and they have pretty dated equipment gradually updating as they go. In AAL’s case PHX uses the old US Airways equipment and crew. Routes to HNL have better luck for me being newer equipment. Routes to LIH & OGG seems to be guaranteed old. Just my experience.
AA’s only certified planes that can make it to Hawaii are the 777’s, 787’s, and A321N. There’s no such thing as old equipment going to Hawaii
@@Adumzzinthehouse FFS 🤦♂️
Reread what you wrote and ask the question, “do airlines change out equipment over time within the history of an airline?”
@@andrewhosfeld So when did AA fly old US Airways planes to Hawaii? More than 5 years ago. They always had ETOPS certified planes that are meant to travel far. These planes were the 757, 767, and the A330 during the US Airways era. After the merger, AAL still uses US Airways planes. But those planes were retired before COVID. Then AA got some A321N’s and 787’s which are always deployed between US and Hawaii since the late 2010’s. So unless you’re referring to more than 5-7 years ago the equipment hasn’t changed since before COVID. You said from your experience, but your experience seems to be lacking some recency. AA now only uses the 777, 787, and A321N between Hawaii
@@Adumzzinthehouse 🤦♂️…it was a yes or no question. Later
can you bring you own cooler and food on the flight ?
Yes without a doubt AA is probably the worst legacy airline in the US. Last month I took an AA flight from PHL to SFO (a 6 hr flight!) in economy and also only had ONE drink/snack service.
Hawaii is fun stay safe.
11:21 was my faviorte part
I flew Usain back in the day from Phoenix to Maui and it was the same as American!
It’s sad. Ever since AA merged with that crappy USAIRWAYS, it all went down hill!!! Bad management, bad reputation. Next time take Hawaiian
You could not pay me to fly AA or UA or DL unless they were the only way to get where I was going!
I’m just curious why you waited an entire year and a half to post these videos since you recorded it in January of 2022?
@@westsparks6844 well, I have not been a follower for that long. What is the reason for the delay in videos?
@dianeschroeder3980 the simplest way to put it is that he pre-recorded videos so that he always has a backlog to post and will not run out if he has no time to film at some times
@@NervousHagrid2.0 thanks for explaining
@@NervousHagrid2.0 that and he started a master's class in music outnin San Francisco and that takes most of his time. RUclips is just something to do when he finds time. Like now he is out of school and there are more posts showing up.
I will never fly American Airlines since I was treated badly as an employee. I worked on the ground, making reservations, but not directly in the airport and that was back before most people made their own reservations. For example, if you had to leave your computer to go to the bathroom they timed you. And along with other things counted toward if you had a raise not. Not joking. !!!
I don’t ever fly American Airlines, even if they’re cheaper than a different airlines
I'm going to guess that your favorite Disney franchise is Mickey Mouse
Sorry your flight sucked. Have a great vacation!
Typical You-Tubers - just opinions unbased from irregular travelers - as opinions are good, and we all have one. But to bash any one airline over another - get over it. If the peeps here don't like AA - don't fly AA> I for one will NEVER get on WN, period. We all have our preferences and choices. It is interesting on the comments and play-by-play to Maui - of such awareness comments, or lack thereof. Fly to HI and over the water regularly - and don't have any of these issues and can track nicely and easily - and with millions of miles and continuing to add miles on AA, AS, DL and others - many wonderful ways to get to Hawaii.
WTF that flight attendant lady didn’t seem nice she should’ve spoken to you in a nicer manner I bet you focused on outcome an had an adventure waiting for you nice vlog dude
To be fair, you are doing a late review of a flight taken when various covid protocols were still in place
7:45 they don’t want u to film inflight procedures I think
How long ago was this trip? All the restrictions should be lifted by now. You shouldn't need any vax or mask. Is this still required for Hawaii only? And it's perfectly legal to record yourself, as long as the faces of others are not shown. But in a public place, that doesn't even matter. I don't know if a plane would be considered a public place.
Watch the beginning.
Domestic flights in general have turned to dog sh*t. Next time I go to Las Vegas from Boston I plan to drive.
I hate flying American Airlines. I will do everything I can to avoid them, but don’t have much choice as my home airport is CLT.
Southwest is probably better than American on flight going it Hawaii
I’ve never even flown American but southwest flights to Hawaii are really great! The legroom even in Southwests economy seats are super good. Three services were carried out on that 5 hour flight, two drinks, and a snack/meal type thing. I’m flying American in September in Main cabin extra and FC, and I’m kind of scared 😅
Southwest is 5x better than American to Hawaii
I live in Florida tho
SWA should get 787s for non stop routes from Florida to Hawaii ASAP
@@ProfessionalFloridian that’s i of there business model of only operating 1 type of jet
T-Mobile customers now get free Wi-Fi with American Airlines.
AA Should be flying a 787 wide body to Hawaii.
FLY DELTA
Next time you fly to Hawaii please fly Hawaiian
She was big mad on an empty flight geez if there had been more passengers she would have really wigged out… maybe she was nervous she would get exposed in some sort of way
I recommend Southwest Airlines over American Anyday
I agree with you about AA- they are the WORST
I agree with you, I have flown to PR on a 5 hour flight on the 737 and it was very uncomfortable and maybe it was my lucky day because the crew was soooo nice they went around nit twice, but 3 times. I asked them why they did that and they said “depends on the crew honey”. It truly is disappointing for most people.
Only one service on a six-hour flight? Dafuq? I fly out of MEX and Aeromexico on the flight to ORD (a little over four hours) gives you a meal and a screen in economy. Given AA’s level of service, when I fly back to DFW to visit family I’ll just go on Volaris, which is a Mexican budget carrier that gives that level of service for less money. Or I’ll go on Aeromexico
AA and a narrow body a321 not a good choice to fly across the Pacific they should use wide bodies 777 a350 787 747 like united used to fly there daily
If the flight attendant told the pilot about you recording. I bet the pilot told her to F off and leave you alone and let you record. In all seriousness though. I’m sorry for the bad experience that you and your family had on AA. I hope that your vacation was far better than the rude and lazy ass flight you were on.
That’s why I hate AA.
American is something else!
AA is not 1 of my favorites will avoid them like the plague
There 777 isn’t bad on the way to Hawaii
I'm not an American but I would rather fly Southwest or Delta than American or United.
AA rips off it’s customers
American Airlines seems worse than Avianca Airlines A320s because Avianca lets you buy food.
I bet you could have a far more mislabel experience on a domestic Frontier flight
7:52 Karen is in da House.......Cue the techno Music ...... "Exuse me.....your not allowed to film"......Squack. Squack Squak....... she says crew members walking back and fourth don't want to be filmed .......what crew.....they only did once service after take off...... HA HA HA
