Watch Part One of the Stones' Magnifier series here: • Magnifier: The Rolling...
Our second exclusive installment from The Rolling Stones live archives finds the band touring on Tattoo You, playing the Hampton Coliseum in Virginia in a 1981 concert that was broadcast live on pay-per-view for the lucky few who could figure out how to order it. The set is heavy on songs from their '70s albums, plus choice covers such as "Just My Imagination," and though the production demands of mega-domes threatened the spontaneity that's the lifeblood of rock and roll shows, the band still feels admirably loose-just listen to the way they let the crowd lead on "You Can't Always Get What You Want," and how much space they leave for Ernie Watts' choice sax accompaniment.
It sounds like anything could happen, and as Keith tells it in our accompanying interview, things ultimately went overboard when a crazed fan rushed Mick during "Satisfaction." Keith's story about taking the assailant out with a perfectly aimed swing of his Telecaster is as well-timed as his leads, and if his recollection doesn't quite match the video evidence, well, the myth is better, innit?
You can buy the complete 25-song set for just $4.99, or pick and choose from all the tracks -including a free version of "Waiting on a Friend" you may prefer to the studio take, thanks to Ernie Watts' prominent sax runs. Видеоклипы
"and the damn thing still stayed in tune". i love you keith. mick is damn lucky to have you watching his back.
Call it silly, but I was at the second night's show at Hampton, '81... the final night of the tour. I've seen some great rock and roll shows in my time, and this was one of the greatest of them all. The Stones were absolutely ON IT that weekend... doing what a rock and roll band is supposed to do... smoking damn hot inside the coliseum while it was colder'n'hell outside, on a windy Hampton Roads night.
All I know is I have seen Jimi 20 feet from me, o obstructions, o stage. Saw Morrison cause a riot.. He loved to incite. Janis was so posessed..so exquisite. And so on. Was in my mid teens and got in underage.
No on contimues to breathe the need to keep goin, to get up, to make a pain that drugs wont ever fix-fixable.
The bands that follow..only followed. There are NEW great artists-
But the STONES have outlived all the greats from old times to new..and they still keep billions very happy.
saw the stones for the 1st time in 1981, the still life tour...2 nights in a row in detroit, iggy was 1st, santana 2nd, then the boys blew the roof off...was pure magic and i have memories from both nights that'll stick w/me for the rest of my life...saw them twice after that, 94 and 97 tours...i started playing music because of this band, as did many other...thanks to the rolling stones, the greatest rock N roll band in the world bar none. :)
keith richards is a badass. love him.
Stones forever, the best band ever
Way to go Keith! Some people are born legends...
Start Me Up? Waiting on a Friend? Black Limousine? Lil T & A?
Do remember that these boys came up in some really shitty clubs in the old days, where that sort of thing probably happened more than once. Add in about 20 years of experience and you can see how the chops would hold together.
Hell yeah!
Kief ist wirklich einzig!
Love the guitar attack bit and as cracks mentioned it was totally understandable why Keith would react that way. The only problem I had with this concert is that all of the uptempo numbers were played way too fast. Must have been good meds on that tour. ;-}
Yes, they take the habit to accelerated the tempo, if prefer a little slower for the groove. But still great like that.
*Fender Product placement, par excellence! Bangkok Johnnie CarSanook Media Thaimaa*
yeah that was cool the way they handled it. Apparently Keith paid the guys bail and got him out of prison and jokes that the guy still owes him $200.
0:33 .....Holy Mo....that was ten years ago , the dude looked there like on death's doorstep ...compared to how he looks today he must've been drinking young virgins blood . The guy will reach hundred.
The rumours he's contacting Ringo to keep his show on the road are completely unfounded though .
Always promoting that "crazy dude" onstage bit, truth was I was there and he was on and off in a flash, Keith got tough for a second,...big deal. Crazy Virginian.
@PAULLONDEN Really? he should tackle this running possibly dangerous fan with his bare hands ? Regardless of the heavy telecaster in his hands. What was he gonna do drop it? regardless the swing wasn't even that bad. Hell if i swung that guitar into someones neck full force that person would have problems getting up, and i am not that strong.
Keith story defending his meal ticket Jagger was funny...I still waiting for my tickets...buy i have a mortgage and student loans! i'm not g4etting any younger guys
kaila62kaila I know how you feel. I can't afford the tickets either, though I'm still a lifelong fan.
Let's write to Mick and his guys and tell them GIMME SHELTER or at least AFFORDABLE concert tickets! Would love to go, but must pay mortgage, student loans and electric bill...
C'mon guys y'all made MORE than enough dough. Besides we still look good in a pair of jeans and heels...I've been told!
kaila62kaila Yeah will write to him, though I doubt he will get it or bother reading it. Worth a try. Get the jeans and high heels ready!
haha!
Brings a litteral meaning to weilding the ax eh?
1:45 "Definitely going for Mick"....oh well,we have to take your word for it , you were there. The way it looks from here , the dude ran straight for you ,and you understandably hadn't the stomach to tackle that with your bare hands .
You had to "defend" Mick . As if Jagger couldn't take care of his own business. Oh well, another myth born. 💨👍🥴
Yes, when you think about the invasions on the stages in the sixtees, they never need to hurt anyone, as you said : a legend.
Remember fellows, those Brits attacked America once, they could do it again! Keep an eye on them...LOL!
What about in 1812 when they burned the white house?
satisfaction has to be their worst song........
Of course they're ugly...they're old...but damn they was good
who the hell dresses mick jagger.......bloody awful mick.....
Why would they put this out? It's really, really shit. Hangfire, neighbours??!! God, they may have been great once but everything on here is fucking awful. And thats not just hindsight. I saw them on this tour 3 times and they were shite. So please DO NOT tell me that Wood improved them because he did'nt. Not that he is fully to blame for their downward spiral. It's just so sad listening to this.
