    Hi Leigh
Would love to hear part two, your musicianship is really breathtaking. I love the Genos 2 and particularly the quality of the one touch settings, but no matter how good an instrument is in the end it all comes down to the skill of the musician playing it.

Hello Leigh! Just started watching the video, and your commentary on the 'song styles' is appreciated. Also, Yamaha UK sending you the keyboard as quickly as they did is and was a totally awesome move on their part. I mean, I'm in the U.S. and I'm watching this because you are going into the detail and doing demos that even Yamaha isn't doing, AND your commentary along the way is greatly appreciated, and I'm glad you're doing it. This really is one of the best sales pitches for the Genos 2 that's out there. Yamaha should be GIVING you the keyboard for all they're going to gain from this, not only in the UK, but the US and around the English-speaking world.
    THANK YOU!

@@LeighWilbraham you're welcome, but from the chair I'm sitting in, it's really nothing but the truth.
PG Music of course makes the absolutely wonderful program 'Band In A Box.' They've got well over 3,000 styles. One of the things that I really like about the way they have it set up is for the Style Selection page, they will offer (not on every style, but most of them) song suggestions. So, you can do a search for song title and it will offer you a number of styles that may be suitable for that song. It may not have a style that as closely replicates the song as the Genos does, but it'll get you close. Having said that, Genos has 800 styles, plus expansion packs. It would be really nice if they, or someone, compiled a list of songs that go with certain styles, particularly the 'song styles.' As I've said elsewhere, I grew up listening to the Great American Songbook, so my knowledge of music post-1970 is severely lacking. Since I don't play out, am not even good enough to consider it, I wouldn't really be aware of those songs that are post-1970, but if we had a party or something, and I was playing for fun at home, and someone asked for something, and I had the sheet music for it, it would be nice to have a 'cheat sheet' where I could say 'Okay, someone wants me to play "Take My Breath Away" and I could go and select the proper style for it. I doubt Yamaha has anything like that in writing, but it would be nice if they did.

Hi Leigh - love all these videos you have made about Genos2, they really inspire me, thanks. I really look forward to Part 2 of the Retro Pop Styles walkthrough (please!) and any others you have time to make for us all. I was lucky enough to receive my Genos2 a few days ago, and I have to disagree with your view on the new method of adjusting the sliders. In your example on the rightmost slider, where the setting is high (as now indicated by the lights) but the slider is physically down at the bottom, it really is very easy to know that you have to take the slider up to where the lights are to then bring back down again to slightly lower the level. How quickly we forget the problems on previous models, whereby you had no visual indication of what the current/preset level is, then you touch the slider and you get a sudden increase/decrease in volume - so, as in your example, the setting is high (but no lights to indicate that) but the slider is physically at the bottom, and the moment you touched that slider on previous models, the volume would jump straight back down to zero and then increase as you moved the slider up. I think that with the lights to indicate the current setting and the so-called "catch point", you can easily see what the current setting is, and what you have to do to adjust it up/down without the sudden loss or explosion of sound.

So Leigh, my theory is as following: Yamaha reps got together and talked how to address the new over50 buyers. "So what songs they heard in their youth?" - "80s!" - "So we pack this new board till roof with 80s flavour!" - "I have another idea - why not pack an entire DX7 into it?" - "No, this is too obvious ... no ... wait! You are genious, lad! And we have all these old fart samples already in the cupboard! So no extra cost! And we sell it as ... the old legend now in the new Genos! YEZZZ!"😄😉

Excellent review and nice improvisations. I bought my Genos2 a few months ago, in a large part, based on your reviews. About the sliders: I programmed the six knobs to control the style, multipad and left/right1-3 volumes. The knobs use the current position of the control and there is no catch problem. I recommend that you try it; you have 3 sets of knob controls to program as you like. About the openness of the styles: In the Genos2 introduction, Martin Harris said that this was done on purpose to allow the player to add more of themselves to the performance by playing and via multipads. I also like a string playing along in ballads - almost as a countermelody. I use the multipads for this and you can find some nice string multipads in the Legacy section - String Legato and String Ballad. It is not hard to program your own as well, particularly if you just want the strings to play a few long notes in the background.

Each time a new keyboard product comes along I wonder if we’re getting close to style saturation. Leigh is blessed with an enviable ability to produce a huge repertoire of tunes from memory. If us mere mortals had to rely on printed music we would spend a lot of playing time searching for the music and the Genos music rest would be put under great strain. I wonder if one possible cure is not to use the intros which
tend to lead into specific tunes. Many of these songs were still played prior to any of this technology. Ok, perhaps not so enjoyable. This won’t really affect me because I don’t own this generation of instrument. I think I might die of old age attempting to keep up. I’m not bitter, just realistic. Thanks anyway Leigh for your mini concerts. Well done.

  • @Del640
    @Del640 9 месяцев назад +4

It’s easy to play bad if you can’t play. It’s good to play good if you are good. However, if you are good at playing, it’s harder to play the tune wrong when you know it so well as a Geneos genius, just for the state of copy-smite.

Yeah another great demo, cheers Leigh! Regarding the sliders and them having to be moved to latch first, I guess it's to stop sudden increases or decreases in volume, especially if you accidently knock one by mistake during a performance. Giving the user a toggle to have them behave as they did before would be good, but equally perhaps a third option that attempts some intelligent smoothing depending how far away the slider is from the actual value. Tough one, but at least having the choice means you can pick your own poison 😊

There's one thing that I wish Yamaha (and others) would consider doing.... well, possibly two things.
For one, I'd love to see a separate Line-Out that you can assign specific instruments to.
For example, being obsessed by a Hammond B3, I'd love to have the option of routing the B3 (or other organ sounds) to a separate line-out that would go right into my Leslie. So not only would you get a fuller sound, but almost a surround sound effect... at least from where I have the Leslie located.
Or let's go nuts, perhaps 2 special assignable lines out.
So the second thing I'd love to see, but never will, would be for a keyboard to also have 5.1 surround output.
Whether be via discrete outputs (5 surround channels and 1 sub woofer). And again, where, if possible, one could create "songs" and assign orchestral instruments to specif channels and even cross-blending. One could create an encompassing sound environment. And for clarity, I'm not talking A.I. assisted frequency splitting (aka, fake surround). I mean discrete!
But... sigh... I know that will never happen.
The closest that I've come to anything like that is what I've built here at home, to run my Yamaha HS4 and Korg PA-700. It's a 6-channel amp with separate controls for each instrument. Each has its own sub-woofer. The sound field created is so filling and nice.
But to have something like a Genos 3 (yes 3) LOL that has discrete outputs (for 5.1 surround) would be amazing... wait... did I say 5.1 surround? Why not go nuts and have 7.1 surround... YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
    LOL
Yeah, I know... never gonna happen.

Well, Lee, Here's the way I see it! With the song styles, I change the cords around to make them sound a little different, and make them a little less like the people who created the song. The first beat you showed us was like the song, "How will I know" by whitney Housten, so if I had the Genos 2, I would put that rhythm in a minor key, or else just create my own intros or just not use that paticular one, unless you're doing a cover of that song. If you're doing a video of a cover of How will I know, you'd have to put in the description, "Cover of How will I know", which would help RUclips to know you're not trying to infringe copyright law. I think the song styles are beautiful. Try putting the song styles in a minor key and see what you get. If some song styles are in a minor key, put them in a major key. Let's hear a video of you doing that, and let's hear what you think of that. I do it all the time. Even Try using your imagination and play your own intros with Variation 4 and then go ahead with your song! Check it out and see what happens!

OTS choices in Genos 1 are better, but that just takes a bit of tweaking as well as the effects on some of the voices , so no big deal.....
Having to push sliders back and forth is a step backwards, takes even more time to make adjustments now when one's playing live.
For the less gifted players the specific songstyles must be a lot of fun, it's a way to improve their playing recognizing the song and practice...and having fun playing is what it's all about right?.... a 50/50 in song related styles an non song related styles would be perfect so it meets everybody's demands.
Looking forward to part two but can you do me (us) a favour.....in all demo's of the genos 2 so far i haven't seen people using the Style Dynamics control, the ambient drums adjustments and the revelation reverb that much which were actually 3 of the main selling points. Thanks in advance and keep up the good work.

      By the way
Genos 2 has different style than Genos 1, kind of RE-imagining... BUT Genos 1 Styles is much superior in every aspect...Genos 1 has many many professional and natural Styles and drum kits and sounds...
But in Genos 2 everything has been kinda downgraded sort of 😕😕 and become so cheesy and superficial .... I don't know why....
Genos 1 was/is very professional keyboards in every aspect...
THAT professionalism has been taken from Genos 2...
You can COMPARISON between them yourself..
it's not my belief.... it's a fact that most who had/has Genos 1, have stated it.... even those who have Tyros 5 are saying....Tyros 5 has better quality.... Believe me they are not wrong...
There are many videos of Genos 1 styles and sounds in all Categories.... Listen to them and then compare them to Genos 2 Styles and sounds...
and you will understand very quickly...
After 7 Long Years.... Genos 2 is a disappointment unfortunately...
It's like very light upgrade from Genos 1 😔😔😔😕😥😞

Also like others, in am not so keen on the strings or indeed the harmonica - they were much better on the Korg in my opinion, so any suggestions on what to do about these sounds would be much appreciated. You have mentioned a non-yamaha string pack so perhaps at some point you could pop a link in one of your videos. Thanks again for all your efforts 👍😉.

I totally agree with you that there are too many styles which lock you in to a specific song - like a glorified karaoke machine almost. For the price of this thing I can't understand why Yamaha didn't just put these 'copy' styles onto a flash drive to be sold separately! This is actually the only reason I'm delaying taking the plunge into buying one. Ps. at around 9:00mins - that's the bridge in this particular song... can't get any more obvious than this. With these rythms so close to the originals... does it really leave any scope for original songwriting?? I'm not seeing it.

If that’s all that’s putting you off that’s surprising as there’s soooo much more to Genos 2 that is different. Drums make this machine sound like nothing else. Brass and guitars are massively improved. Fx - pianos. The list goes on and on and on.

Morning Leigh. Just listening to this as I start work. Sounding great and being a teenager in the 80's, this is the perfect keyboard for me. I was just wondering, now you have spent quite a bit of time with the Genos 2 if you still feel it's the most balanced arranger out there? If you had to buy a board today, is this what you would go for?

Yeah different style, kind of RE-imagining... BUT Genos 1 Styles is superior in every aspect...Genos 1 has many many professional and natural Styles and drum kits and sounds...

I hear that the genos 2 can’t maintain the same voice on keys you still have pressed down while changing to a different voice. That needs to be fixed in my view

I agree - it's something that Yamaha should look at for Genos 3 - and improve the use of the arpeggiator also on Genos 2.

Why should I make the Genos 2 the centerpiece of my home studio. I am NOT interested in live performing or playing others music. I want to compose original music, create song demos and music for my business and home videos. Why not just get a powerful computer and a good DAW?

As for wanting opinions about the slider thing where to bring it back down, you first have to push all the way up, I'll say that it's ridiculous.
Whomever thought of that, whomever designed that and whomever signed off on that 'feature', should be slap hard with an old trout. LOL
It's silly and I'm hoping that it's a bug and not a 'feature."
There is not a single device ON THE PLANET, which uses sliders that behave that way. It's literally counterintuitive and I can see it being very distracting while playing and throw someone's rhythm right off.
Perhaps if enough people complain to Yammy, they'll address that in a software update. Perhaps what they could do is to add a configuration option in Setup, where one could choose to either have it the way it is now or to disable it so that the slider responds like a normal slider. Where it continues from its current position. Not have to be pushed all the way up first.
