I love seeing artists of this caliber playing in their "studio" - it has an extra rawness. It's super fresh and we HEAR so much more. It's almost like taking us in the violin workshop seeing the violin before its made, and being in awe. I love it. More, more, more!
This is my favorite of Partitas and Sonatas! Indeed, there is a rawness to the recording. Ms. Hahn gives no quarter in her performance. It's clear she loves this piece, too. Such a great performance. She's giving it all here. I wonder if she'd teach me to play this. I own a $65 electric violin though I've never had lessons (I occasionally mess about with it, but the bow is not a pick - something I've had troubles with), but I do play the mandolin. I could learn it on my mandolin, and then put my mandolin under my chin I suppose. Good idea? Heeheehee!
I stand by Hahn's Bach recordings as my favorite.. it's just so pristine with clear phrasing and her intonation and I could just go on forever about this
I’ve first heard Hahn’s Bach solo violin CD as Delta in-flight entertainment. Haven’t yet found any better interpretation. Also, her Vuillaume violin seems to sing more than the Stradivaries of other famous violinists.
She's definitely my favorite violinist interpreter of Bach. Her Gavotte is just sublime. Every time I hear a true master interpret Bach, I can't help but think about the man himself. How many individual people he's moved with his compositions thru the centuries; how many more he'll move, as long as Humanity exists.
I love her evolution of bach interpretation over time, from the pristine and metronomic earlier recordings to now, where she takes more artistic liberty and breaths with the music. What remains the same is her impeccable intonation and unbelievably precise bow arm. A joy to listen to.
The phrasing was wrong. She slowed down and combined beats when the music was written to be consistent at one speed. There can be accents, however, but what Hilary did was far from an accent but a mutilation of the beats by elongating them to the extreme.
Listening to Hilary’s absolutely stunning performance and seeing her musical craft in action in her own environment is a privilege. The years of practice to achieve this level of excellence is beyond my imagination, but what’s very obvious is that it has paid off and we’re all beneficiaries of it. Thank you Hilary.
Wowza! What amazing bow control yet her right arm looks so free. That bariolage bowing and her left hand is just astonishing. I will use this as my gold standard for practice.
I can't wrap my head around the fact that Hilary moves with the music as much as she does yet her left hand and bow move in completely linear lines as though they're running on tracks. So glad there is finally a quality live recording of this piece; it's as impressive to watch the master at work as it is a pleasure to listen.
If you listen to the Prelude carefully, you can hear the violin is shedding tears of joy all along because humanity is blessed with this top notch recording at last.
Ahhhh.... Bach with vibrato! The great thing about these kinds of "at home" recordings is that the artist can play it the way she really wants to, and to hell with the critics.
@@republiccooper yes it's still refreshing. Somehow I can listen to her playing over and over again and it stays fresh. The composer gets some credit for that, too, I suppose. :) It's very instructive to watch her play so closely, one can watch her hands carefully.
It’s amazingly refreshing to just hear her do it her way. I used to get in so much trouble with my teacher for playing Bach for the feeling rather than emulate how it would have been played back in Bach’s day.
I loved this recording! Close enough to the microphones to hear the movement of the instrument within the room, one thing I miss about live shows. Also, this is the first time I've noticed sympathetic vibration of other strings in a violin. Absolutely beautiful! I'm going to have to listen to much much more.
Do you play the violin? Sympathetic resonance is sometimes clear to hear, at least for me when I'm playing. Probably the clearest/easiest to me is just a third finger D on the A string, it rings like crazy. Maybe the clarity varies from instrument to instrument, not sure.
@@alphadev , no, I don't play. Thank you for giving a violinist's perspective. I think I need to hone my listening skills a bit, or attend a smaller performance live and sit up front. 😅 I appreciate your reply.
I absolutely loved this, and I absolutely loved her playing it in a less resonant room than usual. As an aging violinist myself that came back to playing two years ago after a 40 year hiatus, I'm working on mostly Bach at the moment and Hilary's recordings are inspirational, always uplifting. She's by far my favourite Bach violinist, and I come back to her recordings time after time. Her clean technique makes her a joy to watch as well as listen to. I particularly liked the momentary whistle from the E string at 18:13, though. In the midst of such awesome perfection, it was wonderful to be reminded that she's human after all! Thank you so much for not editing it out.
I've just come back to the violin at 64, did my Trinity College ATCL in my early 20s then started work in banking. Have to use a shoulder rest now, so the angles are different and the violin FEELS different. And painful ... Working on scales and arpeggios and on my Kruetzer etudes. Just around 7 days of practice so far, will take up Bach after a month or so I guess.
What a spectacular show of violin force in recording settings that CLEARLY couldn't keep up with Hilary's absolute mastery. Also, anybody else find the occasional whistling note error INCREASING your love and appreciation for her performance? Something about the courage of not being perfect, while still being *so perfect* just makes me feel more inspired. (Until I crack open my Bahrenreiter book and barely make it a few cringey measures before I get disappointed again. 😅)
J.S. Bach Music is so difficult as we knew, I just knock out Hilary Hahn's performance. It was so detail, so clear and every single notes were so perfect. If Jascha Heifets listen this performance, I am so sure he would say BRAVO!!! I am wondering what makes Hilary Hahn's sound that so clean and perfect? God's gift? Then Hilary Hahn is so blessed violinist. Just beautiful, amazing and incredible performance. Thank you Ms. Hilary Hahn.

Amazing that I can do that, from the other side of the world. I cannot think of any other musicians (that word doesn't quite seem enough anymore, for Ms Hahn) of this calibre who are so accessible. Not to mention totally fearless in performance. Thank you to Violin Express and of course to Ms Hahn. I have tickets to see her play here in Auckland in August...I'm very excited!

Thank you for wonderful surprise during my internet surfing tonight. I wish you could hear my applause. All my best.
Guitarist too, Bach on guitar is heavenly but hearing Ms Hahn makes me think I chose the wrong instrument. If I could reproduce some of her phrasing I would be very happy.
Oh my….. I LOVE the sound of her violin! it is a perfect match for her, she plays it so wonderfully. The sound and look of her violin is really beautiful.

It's an added joy to watch her dance the music as she plays and the subtle expressions that peak through the intense concentration on her face. She plays so joyfully and gives us so much joy as she does!
I thought Bach was an amazing composer. He knew everything about the structure of the violin and knew how to make the chorale sound more beautiful with the violin's unique playing style. I can't play the violin, but after listening to your performance, I understood the musical structure of this song.
I love how Mrs. Hahn projects and plays with so much meaning and emotion. It really is enchanting. I can only imagine how much practice goes into such perfection. Thank you Mrs. Hilary.
My mother was a talented violinist and bought a 1904 Victorian due to her antique collection but also because of music. This is what Bach is supposed to sound like.
