Really appreciate the support this video has been getting guys. I’ve also made a Killua analysis on my channel which involves going into a similar amount of depth and detail as this. So if you enjoyed this one, you’ll definitely find it interesting. Also, we’re closing in on 1k subs and it would mean the world to me if you could support this channel by dropping a sub. I’ve got a lot more content on the way that I think you guys will really enjoy. Really appreciate you guys.❤️

You're missing one key piece of info on how meteor city and by proxy the troupe operate.
"We'll accept anything you leave here, but don't ever take anything away from us."
That's a message left behind 2 times in the story that we know of. The vagrant incident and the kurta clan massacre. The phantom troupe didn't indiscriminately massacre the kurta clan we can assume from that piece of knowledge, it's a motive. A motive that ties back in with why the troupe saved meteor city from the ants.

I think the motivation of the phantom troupe is to send a message. Or the troupe is the message itself.
You neglect an area, leave a bunch of trash out, it just might attract spiders, and they just might bite you.
That's the most simple way I can put it

I think the key to understanding Chrollo, and by extension, the phantom troupe, is to consider Chrollo’s last name, Lucilfer. Obviously, this name is taken from Lucifer, but I think it is important just to undertake what Lucifer is. He is not simply the biblical devil. He represents the biblical reason for sin. Luciferianism can be simply described as “do as thou will”
That is the doctrine of the luciferian. And that is what I believe the goal of the troupe. To “do whatever we want”
The goals of the troupe is simply to do whatever they collectively want. They have no alliegance to society. Their only allegiance is to their aligned desires. All that the troupe does is in service of that goal. This can also be seen through Hisoka. Hisoka is very much hedonistic, as seen by his actions in the hunter election. Hisoka debates himself on what would lead to the most entertainment. Hisoka, despite being a traitor to the troupe, very much represents the values of the troupe
Edit: with the advent of the Troupe’s backstory in these past few chapters, I’d like to add on to what I’ve already said. The troupe formed out of the collective will of Chrollo and his friends to take revenge against the world for killing the children of meteor city. This plan of vengeance and chaos is how the troupe began, which is how Nobunaga compares them to the hei-ly family, but also states that they moved beyond that in favor of a greater purpose. This could be wrong when the chapters come out, but I think it should be noted that teen Chrollo does not have his infamous tattoo on his forehead yet. I think it is likely that this greater purpose for the troupe, a dedication to meteor city and for the interests of the troupe, will come after Chrollo rebels against the meteor city church. It would be fitting to fashion himself after Lucifer after going against the church. I think that as it pertains to lucifereanism, the ideology of the troupe can be described as “do as thou wills, whatever is necessary to secure the good of the troupe and meteor city”

Here’s the thing:Chrollo doenst have any defined, clear forces driving him.And yet,it’s not completely rational or logical since someone outside the troupe can’t understand it and it’s clearly coming from the depth of his soul.
He may have “emotional”opinions about the world, himself and the troupe, but they’re so abstract and so deep down that he doesn’t understand them.Maybe Chrollo too,”works in mysterious ways.”
Chrollo isn’t selfish in the typical sense,he’s not a hypocrite and this whole “Me good, others bad”thing doesn’t apply to him.He doesn’t hate the people outside the troupe,he’s shown to be neutral to everyone he encounters including Kurapika and Hisoka(until the later one killed two members but not before that, not even after his betrayal)
So if the rest of the spiders may be angry at the world,Chrollo isn’t.His whole energy is neutrality that can be so warm and yet so cold.
Is it greed, then? The troupes deeds seem driven by greed and it could very well be one of the reasons, and yet treasures, glory and money(as well as power)don’t seem very valuable to the spider.
The troupe is more than a group of poor people wanting to be rich, with their abilities they could be living in mansions for years and be way more intertwined with the underworld that they’re pretty independent of now.
Is it then politics? The troupe seems to dislike the mafia to some extent which makes sense when we look at the mafia at meteor city that exploits it’s people.
So does the troupe steal because the mafia “deserves it”or simply because they want the riches and don’t care from who they steal it?
The kurta clan massacre leads to two possibilities:
1.Assuming that the Kurta clan was inoocent and killed for their eyes only,we conclude that the troupe doesn’t care from who they steal and can target everyone REGARDLESS of their feelings towards it.(Example/Evidence:Neon who did nothing wrong(ok,she wasn’t killed so it’s not very powerful)and the wish to play greed island that seemed like something very trivial.Regardless of Chrollo,Phinks and Feitan don’t seem likely to steal from certain people,if they want, they take it as they did with greed islands console)
2.Assuming that the kurtas did something that gave the troupe a reason for revenge(no a good one,but SOME reason besides money)leads to the conclusion that they DO act in a political way considering meteor city’s interest and might hold grunges.
    (Evidence:Revenge for Uvos death)
These possibilities don’t HAVE to exclude each other,as the troupe can kill people WITH or WITHOUT reason. It CAN have justifiable reasons (Chrollos anger at Hisoka and the mafia that terrorises their hometown)but doesn’t HAVE to,as there’s nothing stopping the troupe from killing the innocent.
The spiders are human enough to be protective of each other and genuinely angry at those who hurt then and forgot them, but also evil enough to kill without reason.
Righteousness and selfishness mix practically in every character in HxH,the troupe is a prime example.
Do they have noble, robin hood like traits?Hell yes they do
Are they wicked and ruthless?Yes,they also portray humanities worst traits.
Between all of this we have Chrollo with his neutral worldview, slight, almost impossible to read and detect emotions, and his “I don’t take things personally”approach.
So many questions and answers that form new questions!
But as Chrollo himself stated,it’s not possible to explain his motives verbally which means we should slow down with our interpretations and take it with a grain of salt.
Congrats if you read that far,I’d be happy to read any comments if you have some.
    Great video!🕷🕷

Chrollo is such a well-written character. He suffers from an immense existential crisis, he is utterly lost in life, hence he gathers the phantom group as his family with whom his criminal acts are his way of self-discovery. His identity crisis is so great that he appears emotionless all the time, in reality, he is sensitive from within as in the scene where he cries for the death of Uvogin, he is very attached to the phantom group, and all in all crime is the path he chose to fully recognize himself and attain an identity.

I really liked the video as well, but is it really better than Alecandxr's, or Nux Taku's video on the topic? I feel like this was a good analysis and was also good in the "how he was written department" but it didn't really go that deep imo. it interpreted what a certain action or quote tells us but didn't really go that deep into the interpretation of his character as a whole, nor into the psychologie of his identity crisis. sure that would make it less accurate (and I respect trying to stay as accurate as possible) but would be more entertaining and thoughtprovoking. you could even split the video up like in school (quote, analysis, interpretation, judgement). but that's just my opinion. I do hope that my comment helps True Nahr with the algorithm though. for a 240 subs channel this was incredibly good

Great analysis. I think there's one important point that would emphasize the theory of Chrollo's character as someone without identity: his Nen ability. "Bandit's Book", a Special Nen ability that allows Chrollo to steal Nen abilities of others under certain conditions. A good Nen ability characterizes a Nen user which essentially means that Chrollo is stealing identities and doesn't really have one himself because he not only steals them but also uses them, kind of like wearing a mask of another person's face, metaphorically speaking.

You could say chrollo, is a mysterious character because he doesn’t think of his actions before he acts. Or you could also interpret it as him being a childish character. Which is equally interesting because he is quiet young and like most young people they tend to shift their mind and reasoning as time goes on.

You think the genius fighter and thief doesn’t think before he acts? Are you serious with this comment lol? He’s written to be purposely mysterious but there is nothing that says he doesnt think of his actions he just doesn’t explain himself to the audience or Gon when asked

If you're willing to invest the time to understand the inner workings of the story, then yes. The story itself is very complex and has plenty of moving parts. If you get confused easily, bored easily, or take things for face value, this might not be the perfect show to enjoy. I would still recommend it, however, because once you understand, once those moving parts align, the rewards are really worth it.

Thanks. I understand Chrollo now. I planned on writing a character who’s just as chaotic, they act first before they understand, but I never thought about self worth or value.
I understand that in his actions and interactions with others, Chrollo is selfless. I still wonder whether the ambition of the phantom troupe as a whole was something self serving that Chrollo longed for, which the other members happened to agree with or long for as well.
I also understand how Chrollo understands human nature and is able to basically “study” others. I always personally considered this method of studying others to be evil based on how it’s used.
For example; Zeno studies others while in battle in order to make clear assumptions and establish rationality. He did this in his battle with Chrollo. Zeno also studies others out of concern. He did this when he saw that Killua had changed during the palace invasion. This is the only methods I’ve seen Zeno use. He’s very perceptive, rational, experienced and cool headed. This makes him very wise.
Zeno’s not the only character that studies others and human nature. Basically every character in hxh does this or at least tries to do this other than Leorio.
Chrollo however does this without restriction, and he takes interest in the evil and weakness he discovers in others. He’s admiring terrible qualities. The only other character to do this is Gon, but even then, Gon still has his hypocritical sense of morality and blatantly simplistic selfish nature.
I think that’s what makes Chrollo far more interesting than Gon. He’s like a child that never grew up. The selflessness is the route of his intrigue
Edit: but I still think Gon is a far more interesting character than most of the cast. Simply due to that selfish and lawless nature. I want Gon’s story to continue. He is our protagonist. And he’s a great one. To me he’s a top 5 most intriguing character in hxh. to see how Togashi could develop Gon to a point that he’s more favored than Chrollo (without moral bias) is what I long for. I want to see Gon mature and get smart, but not lose his childish curiosity. That doesn’t mean he has to work or applaud evil behavior. Just the ability to comprehend the situation and act is more than enough for me.
If Togashi was to setup Chrollo and Gon to be eachother’s final opposition by the end of hxh, I’d want to see it playout like this:
A more matured Chrollo who has mastered his understanding of human nature and his ability to see into the weakness and characteristics of others (as well as use and manipulate those factors to his advantage)
    Vs
A matured Gon who simply has no weakness
I think that would make an interesting climax. It’s the type of climax I’d want to write for my own story one day.
    Manga spoilers
(Also yeah ik Chrollo Hisoka and Kurapika are probably gonna go at it on the succesion arc and many members [if not all members] of the troupe are probably gonna die but still the idea is interesting)

The thing that made me go from "oh yeah this guy could be a cool villain" to "this might be one of the most interesting characters in anime" was when after his fight with Zeno and Silva, Chrollo just passes out with a smile on his face. Where have I seen something like that before....
Wait, that's not a villain move, that's a Goku move. Chrollo kind of ends up feeling like a dark reflection of Goku and a lot of other premier shounen jump protagonists. Battle is how Goku understands himself and understands other people, his language. He's used it to convert villains like Piccolo, silently mentor weaker characters like Buu or even as a sign of friendship and love like with his grandpa or with Krillin. When Goku fights, it's typically with "conversation" in mind, Frieza and King Piccolo are probably the only exceptions in the series. Chrollo is just a really cynical take on this. Chrollo steals and fights people in an attempt to better define himself, but there's no conversation to be had in those acts when Chrollo and the rest of troupe does them. People end up dead of vengeful and he still feels empty at the end of the day. The source of this is probably how the world doesn't see citizens of meteor city as people, so the troupe doesn't see the rest of the world as people, but for a character like Chrollo or Goku or even Naruto, that just doesn't work. Chrollo and a bunch of other HxH characters are basically stock shounen characters stuck in a world that really hates stock shounen characters
