  • In this video, we plant out red and green lettuce and Crown Prince winter squash, look at a gooseberry bush I need to plant, and examine a plum tree that I need some advice about... can you help?
It's looking beautiful up on the allotment at the moment. Everything is growing away now that we've had a decent spell of rain.
I am really worried about this tree though, so if you can help, please let me know in the comments.

Hi Chris if you see "Bethans Garden" she planted three grafted trees with two varieties and does not recommend them as she has had the same problems as you .

Ah, thank you Susie, I'll go and look at Bethan's videos.

    HI Chris,
Unfortunately, I'm unable to offer any advice regarding the plum. But the wet weather and cool temperatures has certainly posed the biggest challenge this year, so it could be a combination of issues?. Despite that your plot is looking great!
    Have a great week,
    Take care, Annie 🐞 🐝 🌱

Hi Annie, the cool weather is playing havoc with some crops isn't it? Courgettes, cucumbers and beans are all a little slow. Hey ho, I'm sure they'll pick up soon. I hope you have a lovely week.

The peppermint chard wouldn't look out of place in a flower border.

I totally agree with that. The stems are stunning and the leaves very lush and vibrant. Many vegetables work well in a flower border. Flowering leaks are my favourites this year.

I only have a super dwarf apple tree 😂 fierce three years it has produced one apple a year. So in other words I’m no expert. I feel repetitive when I comment simply saying it’s just too,not here to do anything much outside. I hope you get some summer sun soon, Ali 🌞🥵🇨🇦

Thanks Ali. It's been pouring down all day here so far, so if you have any spare sunshine, do send it our way. I think it's par for the course for fruit trees to be a little sparse in the first few years, but as you say, I'm no expert either!

Hi Chris I don’t know what is wrong with your plum but I have heard that multiple grafted trees are not as healthy. You’re better off planting two individual varieties of same species about 18 inches apart in the same hole and pruning them as one. Apparently they are healthier on their own roots. I’ve done this with all my pome and stone fruit trees.

Hi Helen, I haven't heard of that before but it sounds like a fascinating idea. So you basically prune them flat where they grow together? Do you put a post in the middle?

I planted 3 new Gooseberry trees earlier this and want to add some Cherry trees next as the more perennials the better it will be in the long-term as the older I get the harder it will be to keep on top of growing enough food especially with all the farm land going to rewilding and carbon offset I expect food prices to rocket.

That sounds like a great idea. I'm all for fruit bushes and trees as they just keep on giving year after year and are often the most expensive foods to buy in the shops.

Hi Chris, your garden is romping away nicely 😍 Verbena is stunning!
I love to help you with the plum, but I haven't come across this issue before. My Plums are not looking that healthy this year either, but I don't have any multi-crafted varieties....
Gosh, the weather is still cool, really crazy 🙈
    Have a great week!💚🌿

Super cool isn't it... 8,5C in the polytunnel the other night, how are the melons supposed to deal with that! The plum tree is a little worrying but I'm going to try a few things to see if they help. Fingers crossed.

Hi Mate, had similar problem with pink lady apple tree that I got number of years ago as a small twig. I thought either one or the other, fungus or insect damage. So applied scotts bug spray stuff. Worked a treat. I think what happens in nature fungus gets a hold in the wind, then bugs attack when plant is down and then plant has no time to recover. If an issue still, then use rose clear, but not really for fruit, but just don't eat them this year.

Thanks Bill, I'll look into it. I have a few other things to try so fingers crossed it'll pull through as I hate loosing plants... especially trees.
