The boomers get to claim them, but it was Gen X who got to grow up with the amazing music of the 70s and 80s. The Progressive Rock movement includes such bands as Yes, Pink Floyd, and Rush, all of whom can be pointed to for amazing musicianship, composition, and songwriting from top to bottom.
@@HeavyTopspin boom generation was from 1946-1964 (lasting close to 2 decades). In 1980 the youngest would have been 20 years old. That generation witnessed the birth of multiple genres of music. My kids were Gen X and Gen Y/millennial. I shared music from the 60s through 80s with them and we listened to stuff from the 90s/early 2000s together. Tragically, my Gen X son lost his life to fentanyl during the Great Recession. The pain of that loss persists but those decades of music always remind me of the wonderful times we shared. A good rule of thumb: if the song pre-dates MTV (very early 80s and earlier), odds are it won't have a traditional music video. For older songs like this, most often than not, the official music video is video from a live performance/concert, synced to the studio recording. That's why you see so many 'official music video' titles on seemingly concert performances.
Also look at who posted the video. If the band put it out there it’s probably the best version you’ll find, whether it’s the studio version or a live performance. (Maybe you did that this time but it didn’t seem like it.) Again, thank you for your reaction to the music we took for granted when we were growing up!
Back in the 70's, all we could hope for was to catch our favorite bands on Midnight Special or Don Kirshner's Rock Concert on Saturday nights. If we were lucky we would see American Bandstand or Soul Train. I think that's why my generation went nuts over MTV when it started.
The guys in this band were all trained classical musicians and attended the University of Kansas...hence the band's name. I saw them live in 2010 just before Steve Walsh (lead singer extraordinaire) retired from the band. The entire band is just amazing, and they're every bit as good live as they were in the studio, perhaps a tad better, if you can imagine that. Thanks for your reaction, man. Honestly,. they didn't meet in college and they aren't all classically trained. They were in various bands playing around Topeka, Kansas in the early 70s and members of rival bands decided to team up which is how the band was formed. The rest of what you post is pretty accurate though - they were very precise onstage - live performances were musically as perfect as any band touring in that era.

You're just now getting around to this epic masterpiece? The whole "Leftoverture" album is a classic. I saw Kansas live at the old Checkerdome in St. Louis back in either '77 or '78 (can't remember which now) and they rocked the place.
Dang, man, you're famous just for seeing them in their heyday. I worked with a guy who saw Boston, Led Zepplin, The Who, etc, back in the late 70s. What a great time to have gone to rock concerts. At least I got to see the Eagles in 2014 before Glen Frey passed away.

I saw many concerts at the checkerdome in the very late 70s and 80s, not much for acoustics but great memories, didn't see Kansas until early 90s at Mississippi nights on the landing, and Kerry livgren just happened to be with him that night, he was wearing a yellow stripe and shirt with red suspenders, great show of course.
This is a pure masterpiece. The 70s were so amazing. Just another example of why we older people (I'm Gen X) think today's music is overwhelmingly trash. (yes, there's a few exceptions)

To see young people start to realize what really great music sounds like, the quality, diverse sounds & styles, creativity, no autotune, real instruments etc. So many of them end up saying they wish they were around back then.
The video is from the old Don Kirshner's Rock Concert show, which in OKC came on after The Midnight Special. In the Kansas documentary they talk about it. Basically they played live in an empty studio. Yes, many times the studio audio was dubbed over the video.
Kansas is an insanely talented band. Many great tracks to choose from. Along with the popular suggestions may I add "The Spider/Portrait (He Knew)". A good combo of their prog and more traditional rock sides.
This is a masterpiece of classic rock: every movement has its own purpose and personality. This is probably the "magnum opus" of this group (although I'll admit to not having heard all of their music). I will listen to this song EVERY time it comes on. Next Kansas suggestion: "Point of Know Return".
This is their most popular rocker, but either "The Wall" or "Miracles Out of Nowhere" could well be the "magnum opus", at least from this album. On "Point of Know Return" (catchy title track), there's "Closet Chronicles", "The Spider/Portrait (He Knew)", and "Hopelessly Human". Then there's the highlights from the other albums...
Steve Walsh is the lead singer. Check out the very progressive song called "Journey from Mariabronn' Walsh is absolutely terrifyingly phenomenal in it.
"Point of Know Return" is also an amazing piece of music. Loved these guys for years; really happy you are discovering them as well. I'm sure the rabbit hole will be well worth the trip. The producers used this song as season finale/"The Road So Far" opening video montage for "Supernatural" for all fifteen seasons. Welcome to the world of Kansas- one of the most underrated bands of the time, and still going strong on this their 50th anniversary. Their most recent album (2020 or 21) went to #1 on the rock charts.
The "Leftoverture" and "Point of Know Return" albums came out when Kansas was at its peak. The album "Masque", which came out the year before "Leftoverture", had many good songs, including "Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel", "Child of Innocence", and "Mysteries and Mayhem/The Pinnacle".
Two things - ....and to think that they are NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! What a joke. 2- I saw them open for Heart and they blew Heart off the stage IMO.
I was a junior in high school in 1976 when this album came out. I got to see Kansas do this whole album live in 76 and it was just superb!! The musicianship was absolutely spot on, never missed a note, guitar and keyboard work were clean, vocals were perfect! Oh, and Kansas was the warm-up band for a new group you might have heard of - Boston. I will STRONGLY recommend a Kansas song for your listening pleasure: Song for America. It was the title track of the album before this one, 1975. The poetry is jaw dropping!!

It was huge when it came out and for years after but when the CW show Supernatural used it many times in the mid 2000’s (it was great), all these younger people heard it and made it blow up all over again. Supernatural had (and still has) legions of loyal viewers and they took this song right back to the top of music pop culture. Yeah it and Dust In The Wind were their two most commercially popular songs but that didn’t mean they weren’t/aren’t amazing songs! I’m 54 and this is one of those great songs I’ve known from early childhood. Love to see young people keeping great music alive.
I actually saw Kansas in concert and they are the real deal. This is my favorite song by them. I’ve been listening to it for over 40 years. It still sounds great after all these years. Carry On!
Kerry LIvgren went on to play on many paradigm Christian rock albums and made his own excellent contributions to the genre. A real inspiration to our "guitar brothers"....
I was part of the class of 1978 and almost everyone I knew had the "Leftoverture" album and the "Point of Know Return" album. "Point of Know Return" would be a good next one to listen to.

This is the closing theme of the 1977 movie "Heroes" starring Henry Winkler, Sally Field and Harrison Ford. I don't know if it was written for the film or if it was coincidently the perfect fit but both song and film were released about the same time. One of those films you gladly have to watch several times to catch subtle details that will alter your understanding of the story you have seen. Killer performance by Sally Field.
The guy with the long hair is Robby Steinhardt, he plays the violin, which you heard in " Dust in the Wind". I believe Steve Walsh was the lead singer, a very talented man too. I saw them live onky one time in like the late 70s early 80s, it was great.
One of the most iconic songs of the time, for several reasons: First, it is clearly progressive rock, patterned mostly after Yes and sometimes Genesis, with such a wide diversity of song styles from one song to the next! Second, they are an American prog band! They end up on my list of best prog albums, along with Yes and Genesis., among others. Third, this song, and the album it's from, absolutely launched their career into the stratosphere!

- AWESOME reaction! - Yes, "the song that just keeps giving". In fact, "the BAND that just keeps giving"! :) - Had pleasure of seeing them live, in 1976... as openers on the "'Frampton Comes Alive' Tour"! (And yes, Frampton played "Do You Feel Like We Do?", including the uber-cool "voice box"- and yes, we did feel like they do :) ).
This is concert footage synced to the recording on the album, which I think is a good way to hear it for the first time. After all, the studio recording is what became a hit, it's the original artistic vision, with all the acoustic benefits of separation and a perfect mix. You can always hear live version later. I think it's a good policy to go with the official video first.
When choosing which versions to use, remember that the first music videos, as we know them now, were released in 1981. Songs released before then were usually audio only. We could watch concert footage, see live performances on shows like The Midnight Special, American Bandstand, or Soul Train.
I saw Kansas half a dozen times during the mid 70s to mid 80s. Man, Steve Walsh was one hell of an entertaining frontman. The dude would be singing his ass off, going back and forth from the keyboards to the center mic, would jog in place playing keyboards, doing quick HANDSTANDS on his keyboards! He was wild, like an Energizer bunny. An amazing vocalist and keyboard player, as well was entertaining showman....and that was just ONE guy in the band! The others are all great as well. Such a great band.
Props to the songwriters of the world because I have no idea how someone stares at a blank sheet of paper then ends up with an incredibly complex masterpiece like this.
Kerry Livgren, ( he’s the blonde guitarist in the video) wrote a lot of Kansas’ music. When he was a young child, his Great Aunt Lily would play classical music records for him, and after listening together, she would engage him in discussions about the intricacies of the music and also tell him about the composers’ lives.
You should try some of the more progressive Kansas masterpieces such as Song For America, Lamplight Symphony, Journey from Mariabronn, Magnum Opus, Incomudro: Hymn to the Atman just to name a few. They will blow you away.
These boys are literally about 30 minutes west of me and Topeka from where they grew up, many of them at any rate. So much so that I had older roommate who is like 22 and I was 18 in college and he was from Topeka and he knew those guys, and he actually had some of their hand-me-down band equipment in his massive stereo setup. When Kansas exploded on the scene in the mid-1970s, it was just a greatest blend of really good rock and storytelling and melodic stuff, with some Progressive elements. And it was quite ambitious. They had many hits, and there is so much to check out and I know that you would love it. And in fact at least two of their albums, Point Of Know Return and Leftoverture, were regarded highly as entire album masterpieces. Check out Portrait (He Knew) about Leonardo da Vinci, Miracles Out of Nowhere, What's Going On, and, of course, Dust in the Wind, about the impermanence of life, and it was rooted in Native American spirituality and it became a huge hit as well a bit later for them. So, Robby steinhardt, the guy with the huge beard, and this one he's acting as a multi-instrumentalist and a strong backing vocalist but the band basically has at least a couple lead singers but they were also good vocally and good at what they played. But Robby steinhardt is really well known for his violin playing. It didn't happen in this particular song but it's they're a lot and his is a signature part of the Kansas sound, and you can hear it in at least a few of the songs that I mentioned, but he was definitely feature prominently in Dust in the Wind.
Time capsule song. Imagine this song coming out on the radio while you're in college! Dare I say, conversation was made. Seeing you enjoy it almost 5 decades later was a real joy. Thanks.

I was at LAX once heading home to New Orleans and it was chaos due to weather and delays. Southwest put a sign at the boarding gate that said that it was really crowded, sold out flight etc so it would be helpful if people could " carry on their wayward sons".
If you held a concert of each generation's top groups, the 70's would CRUSH every other generation. I was born in 69, but still find myself loving the 70's more than any other generation; and you can throw in other genres. Earth, Wind and Fire, Parliament Funkadelic, Cameo, Brothers Johnson.... Rock and Funk/Disco from the 70's was FIRE!

This is a pure masterpiece. The 70s were so amazing. Just another example of why we older people (I'm Gen X) think today's music is overwhelmingly trash. (yes, there's a few exceptions)
I'm a Boomer and was sixteen when this came out!!! Loved Kansas! Boomers and Gen X had the best music! I feel sad for this generation! They don't have true music!! They are all shocked and amazed, pleasantly, at music from our generation.
I love older music. I like newer music too. Though now I'm getting to the part of my life where I dismiss Gen Z music the way my parents dismissed mine... Huh.

To see young people start to realize what really great music sounds like, the quality, diverse sounds & styles, creativity, no autotune, real instruments etc. So many of them end up saying they wish they were around back then.

Modern technology for it's time
The video is from the old Don Kirshner's Rock Concert show, which in OKC came on after The Midnight Special. In the Kansas documentary they talk about it. Basically they played live in an empty studio. Yes, many times the studio audio was dubbed over the video.
Kansas is an insanely talented band. Many great tracks to choose from. Along with the popular suggestions may I add "The Spider/Portrait (He Knew)". A good combo of their prog and more traditional rock sides.

This is a masterpiece of classic rock: every movement has its own purpose and personality. This is probably the "magnum opus" of this group (although I'll admit to not having heard all of their music). I will listen to this song EVERY time it comes on.

This is their most popular rocker, but either "The Wall" or "Miracles Out of Nowhere" could well be the "magnum opus", at least from this album. On "Point of Know Return" (catchy title track), there's "Closet Chronicles", "The Spider/Portrait (He Knew)", and "Hopelessly Human". Then there's the highlights from the other albums...

"Point of Know Return" is also an amazing piece of music. Loved these guys for years; really happy you are discovering them as well. I'm sure the rabbit hole will be well worth the trip. The producers used this song as season finale/"The Road So Far" opening video montage for "Supernatural" for all fifteen seasons. I am a metalhead and huge fan of classic rock. This has always been in my top 5 songs. Then it became the unofficial theme song for the best TV show ever ever supernatural. Have you heard the acoustic version by a female duo named Neoni? They played it in the final scene and it destroyed me.

Welcome to the world of Kansas- one of the most underrated bands of the time, and still going strong on this their 50th anniversary. Their most recent album (2020 or 21) went to #1 on the rock charts.
The "Leftoverture" and "Point of Know Return" albums came out when Kansas was at its peak. The album "Masque", which came out the year before "Leftoverture", had many good songs, including "Icarus - Borne on Wings of Steel", "Child of Innocence", and "Mysteries and Mayhem/The Pinnacle".
Agreed. Masque is a highly under-appreciated album. Great songs start to finish.
Two things - ....and to think that they are NOT in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!! What a joke. 2- I saw them open for Heart and they blew Heart off the stage IMO.
I was a junior in high school in 1976 when this album came out. I got to see Kansas do this whole album live in 76 and it was just superb!! The musicianship was absolutely spot on, never missed a note, guitar and keyboard work were clean, vocals were perfect! Oh, and Kansas was the warm-up band for a new group you might have heard of - Boston.
I will STRONGLY recommend a Kansas song for your listening pleasure: Song for America. It was the title track of the album before this one, 1975. The poetry is jaw dropping!!
Same age and same time I saw these guys. I’d have to really think about the dates, but I probably saw REO the month before and ELO the next month and so on. What a time we had!

It was huge when it came out and for years after but when the CW show Supernatural used it many times in the mid 2000’s (it was great), all these younger people heard it and made it blow up all over again. Supernatural had (and still has) legions of loyal viewers and they took this song right back to the top of music pop culture. Yeah it and Dust In The Wind were their two most commercially popular songs but that didn’t mean they weren’t/aren’t amazing songs! I’m 54 and this is one of those great songs I’ve known from early childhood. Love to see young people keeping great music alive.

Kerry LIvgren went on to play on many paradigm Christian rock albums and made his own excellent contributions to the genre. A real inspiration to our "guitar brothers"....
I was part of the class of 1978 and almost everyone I knew had the "Leftoverture" album and the "Point of Know Return" album. "Point of Know Return" would be a good next one to listen to.

This is the closing theme of the 1977 movie "Heroes" starring Henry Winkler, Sally Field and Harrison Ford. I don't know if it was written for the film or if it was coincidently the perfect fit but both song and film were released about the same time. One of those films you gladly have to watch several times to catch subtle details that will alter your understanding of the story you have seen. Killer performance by Sally Field.

The guy with the long hair is Robby Steinhardt, he plays the violin, which you heard in " Dust in the Wind". I believe Steve Walsh was the lead singer, a very talented man too. I saw them live onky one time in like the late 70s early 80s, it was great.
One of the most iconic songs of the time, for several reasons: First, it is clearly progressive rock, patterned mostly after Yes and sometimes Genesis, with such a wide diversity of song styles from one song to the next! Second, they are an American prog band! They end up on my list of best prog albums, along with Yes and Genesis., among others. Third, this song, and the album it's from, absolutely launched their career into the stratosphere!

71, I graduated HS in 1970, and watched the Beatleson Ed Sullivan as a 12 yr old!! We lived in an incredible time, never to be repeated.

- Had pleasure of seeing them live, in 1976... as openers on the "'Frampton Comes Alive' Tour"! (And yes, Frampton played "Do You Feel Like We Do?", including the uber-cool "voice box"- and yes, we did feel like they do :) ).
This is concert footage synced to the recording on the album, which I think is a good way to hear it for the first time. After all, the studio recording is what became a hit, it's the original artistic vision, with all the acoustic benefits of separation and a perfect mix. You can always hear live version later. I think it's a good policy to go with the official video first.
When choosing which versions to use, remember that the first music videos, as we know them now, were released in 1981. Songs released before then were usually audio only. We could watch concert footage, see live performances on shows like The Midnight Special, American Bandstand, or Soul Train.
I was a teenager in the mid to late 70's. So many bands and singers all doing their best. Point Of No Return is my favorite from Kansas.
I saw Kansas half a dozen times during the mid 70s to mid 80s. Man, Steve Walsh was one hell of an entertaining frontman. The dude would be singing his ass off, going back and forth from the keyboards to the center mic, would jog in place playing keyboards, doing quick HANDSTANDS on his keyboards! He was wild, like an Energizer bunny. An amazing vocalist and keyboard player, as well was entertaining showman....and that was just ONE guy in the band! The others are all great as well. Such a great band.

Props to the songwriters of the world because I have no idea how someone stares at a blank sheet of paper then ends up with an incredibly complex masterpiece like this.
Kerry Livgren, ( he’s the blonde guitarist in the video) wrote a lot of Kansas’ music. When he was a young child, his Great Aunt Lily would play classical music records for him, and after listening together, she would engage him in discussions about the intricacies of the music and also tell him about the composers’ lives.
You should try some of the more progressive Kansas masterpieces such as Song For America, Lamplight Symphony, Journey from Mariabronn, Magnum Opus, Incomudro: Hymn to the Atman just to name a few. They will blow you away.

These boys are literally about 30 minutes west of me and Topeka from where they grew up, many of them at any rate. So much so that I had older roommate who is like 22 and I was 18 in college and he was from Topeka and he knew those guys, and he actually had some of their hand-me-down band equipment in his massive stereo setup.
When Kansas exploded on the scene in the mid-1970s, it was just a greatest blend of really good rock and storytelling and melodic stuff, with some Progressive elements. And it was quite ambitious. They had many hits, and there is so much to check out and I know that you would love it.
And in fact at least two of their albums, Point Of Know Return and Leftoverture, were regarded highly as entire album masterpieces.
Check out Portrait (He Knew) about Leonardo da Vinci, Miracles Out of Nowhere, What's Going On, and, of course, Dust in the Wind, about the impermanence of life, and it was rooted in Native American spirituality and it became a huge hit as well a bit later for them.
So, Robby steinhardt, the guy with the huge beard, and this one he's acting as a multi-instrumentalist and a strong backing vocalist but the band basically has at least a couple lead singers but they were also good vocally and good at what they played. But Robby steinhardt is really well known for his violin playing. It didn't happen in this particular song but it's they're a lot and his is a signature part of the Kansas sound, and you can hear it in at least a few of the songs that I mentioned, but he was definitely feature prominently in Dust in the Wind.
Time capsule song. Imagine this song coming out on the radio while you're in college! Dare I say, conversation was made. Seeing you enjoy it almost 5 decades later was a real joy. Thanks.

The 60's and the 70's I grew up with these guys. And other fantastic bands. This is when the music was good. Check out deep purple, child of mine. Incredible song.
Those older bands didn't really do many actual "videos", so the live performance IS the video with the radio track laid on top.
Growing up in the 70's we had the BEST music EVER made... that was pure 100% Rock and Roll. Won't ever hear that nowadays. the talent doesn't exist anymore!!!!

Bands back in the day actually worked for their paycheck unlike today.
I was at LAX once heading home to New Orleans and it was chaos due to weather and delays. Southwest put a sign at the boarding gate that said that it was really crowded, sold out flight etc so it would be helpful if people could " carry on their wayward sons".

If you held a concert of each generation's top groups, the 70's would CRUSH every other generation. I was born in 69, but still find myself loving the 70's more than any other generation; and you can throw in other genres. Earth, Wind and Fire, Parliament Funkadelic, Cameo, Brothers Johnson.... Rock and Funk/Disco from the 70's was FIRE!

1977 at home cranking this song - my father came home and yelled, "Turn that down!!!" Kansas rules then and now.
