      I was literally thinking to myself while watching this video, "Gee, I wish these guys would do a twitch stream, where they maybe answer questions from viewers or stream their games/campaigns. Maybe I'll send them a message about the idea." I was pleasantly surprised by the announcement at the end. LET'S GO!

    Agree that the basic Dragonborn is somehow kind of dull. I made a Dragonborn monk sailor, described him as the Chinese version of a dragon, long facial whiskers, serpentine body with stumpy limbs. His attacks were bites and tail attacks and body slams etc.

      Matt Maybe if your DM is chill enough then maybe you could take a kobold instead of the 3 retainers from the knight background. A CR 1/8 creature that is a coward and will run if combat actually starts doesn't sound like it'll break the game

    Some of the ideas I really liked in this episode:
    - Draconic Pact Warlock: Pretty self explanatory but I'd hope this becomes a UA at some point, or maybe a canon subclass. It's just a really rich idea!
    - Dragonborn Bard: I visualise this as "She begins by belching fire into the ground before them, creating a burning patch of hot hungry flames. Before the flames start to burn away at the surrounding roots and grass, the strums of her lute appear to tame them. Images of silhouettes appear and dance in the flames. As she sings of brave heroes and their legends, the farming bystanders become memorised at the sights in the flames." What I particularly like is the idea that the songs the dragonborn would sing would not be of mighty dragons themselves but of the brave heroes that throughout the ages have come to face these dragons!
    As an aside, the dragonborn in my homebrew setting, I have not needed to fully iron out yet, but I'm chewing on the idea that maybe the dragonborn are 'born' of the flesh of dead dragons (with the colour of the dragon's flesh determining the equal colour of dragonborn). Whether i'll have the gods do this, or powerful spellcasters, I do not know yet.

    I had a dragon born that I named Alduin, and my backstory was that I entered the campaign setting on a wagon being pulled to my death (an excacution via beheading), when all the sudden a dragon attacks. I escaped via the underground keep. Afterward I warned the political leader of a very prosperous and proud city of the dragon. I had to take upon a quest to slay the dragon by travelling to a different dimension, where I met the spirits of ancient legendary heroes.

    I think I met Jim Davis the other day while out and about. I walked up, asked him for an autograph and he looked surprised. I'm not sure why, the man has a world class youtube channel. I told him "you look like you're busy, but I just wanted to get a selfie and autograph so I can say I met a true blue celebrity!" He blushed and put a hand over his little smiling mouth. "Thank you" he proclaimed with his inside voice. I looked down and noticed he wasn't wearing any shoes on his pale feet. That was weird, but I figured he was just really down to earth and knew about how that strengthens your arches and calluses naturally. What was really weird though was that one of his big toes was about double the size of the other. Quite interesting. Anyways, i asked him why he went shoeless and he said "two words; toe cheese" i understood immediately and told him of my own quest of attaining cheeseless toes. It was quite the long wordy tale so I'll skip over that for your sake. Very detailed. After our selfie we parted ways and I noticed that he hopped into his vintage sports car painted with a dragon decal with a thought bubble that said "I'm Hot!". it was really cool. I hope i can see jim and his nice car again someday. Does anyone else have a nice story meeting their idols?

      I saw Jim Davis at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
      He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
      I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
      The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
      When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

  • @Capt.Thunder
    @Capt.Thunder 6 лет назад +16

    In one of my settings, I had Dragonborn as mutants of mortal races who drink the blood of a dragon. The local kingdom train young boys to become elite paladins loyal to the crown, and upon attaining adulthood undergo the Rite of the Storm Dragon, where they drink a chalice of Blue Dragon blood which mutates them into what people see as the ultimate, incorruptible fighting machines.

    4:00 Pruit described precisely my dilemma a couple of months ago. I'm quite a strong theme DM. There is one halfdragon in my world, who's there for a reason, and no dragonborn. Ofc, a player wants to swap cahracter and wants to play a dragonborn.
    Given part of the theme of my world is a civil war in hell bubbling onto the surface, I let the first circle be neutral and had Tiamat there - creating all manner of monsters (basically trying to be nuclear swizerland), and it worked really well. Solved a bunch of things and the player is stoaked.
    So can attest, a one off unique character going against the theme is easy to accommodate and enriches the world quite nicely

      Gregory Floriolli If I remember gold dragon does look a lot like Asian style dragons being longer and body and having wings that are more similar to those of a mammal rather than reptile secondarily they also have the facial whiskers and antlers

    • @Spiralpaladin
      @Spiralpaladin 4 года назад +1

      Unfortunately the only way to get that would be having a Gold Half-Dragon, since gold dragons have the Asian dragon-esque whiskers, while dragonborn don't really have the unique features of any of their draconic former overlords apart from color coordinated breath weapons and elemental resistance. But pedantic things aside, a Samurai would fit very well with a dragonborn's values toward honor and a clan.

      Mr.King I imagined a very high magic setting. Floating garden cities held together by gold rings of levitation, with a very high focus on politicking between the different tribes/nations under the council. That sounds sweet.
      Maybe the plot could be the dragons fighting against old gods or fiends trying to take back the world after being banished during some ancient dragon war?

  • @Glorfindel_117
    @Glorfindel_117 6 лет назад +3

    As my favorite race, the theme of my homebrew setting IS Dragonborn! As the second oldest race to exist, they were lead to believe by their maker, the Storm god, that they were the first to be made. Holding a kingdom that unanimously rules the only continent in the known world, the Dragonborn have fought a history spanning war with the Sivehlin (My plant race). Steadily losing to the might of Nature and the very planet, the Dragonborn conscripted their god to give them one of each Chromatic Dragon (The Storm gods servants, or angels) as weapons for the war. After they nearly destroyed the planet, they mysteriously vanished in battle against the Sivehlin. Now reduced to 4 Groves on the East of the world, the Nature War became a stalemate, and faded from the memory of all the races, save the Dragonborn nobility's myths. Since the intrusion of the Storm god, all of the other gods banned interference with the Prime Material.

    • @Bluecho4

      But if you did that, you wouldn't be able to take a _Pseudodragon_ as a familiar. You'd be limited only to normal animals. It's the Warlock's Pact of the Chain that gives you unusual ones. And the _entire point_ of getting the familiar is to run with the "Purple Dragon" bit.

  • @ChasoGod

    Things I would change about the Dragonborn race:
    1) Natural Armor Bonus, doesn't have to be big just a +1 but they have dragon like scales so they should have some natural armor.
    2) Darkvision, they have dragon like eyes so they should be able to see in the dark
    3) Breath Weapon Recharge, after a dragonborn uses their breath weapon they roll a 1d4 and have to wait that many rounds till they can use it again. If they roll a 1 they can't use their breath weapon not ext round but the round after that.
    4) Natural Attacks, they have claws and teeth they should have a claw and bite natural attacks.
    5) Additional Ability Bonus, depending on the color of their scales they'd get an additional +1 to a certain Ability.
    6) Wings, upon reaching a certain character level (mid range so like level 10) Dragonborn sprout wings. To add RP value in it the process can take a while and be painful since the wings are growing and pushing out of your back so you'd need to make Con saves to resist passing out from pain.

    • @iam2_maniacal446
      @iam2_maniacal446 4 года назад +2

      I think at this point, the problem of "Why would I choose another race other than dragonborn?" I'd keep the dark vision, and probably have the breath weapon usable amount of times equal to con modifier on a bonus action. Mayyyyyybe keep natural weapons. I'd personally reflavour the natural weapons as Draconic traits: At 5th and again at 11th level, choose one from ;
      Wings
      Teeth (1d4+str, damage type is same as breath weapon)
      Claws (1d6+str)
      Tail (1d6+str)(can grab/lift objects up to 5× their str score)
      Teeth(Bite), claw and tail attacks can also rely on con modifier and also be used on bonus action. Their damage die can increase to 2d4 and 2d6 at level 11. Can get all of it back on a long rest, breath weapon still a short rest as it's an actual feature but like I said, the Draconic Traits are a big maybe but hopefully viable as you have to level up to gain access to 2 of them maximum

    I always like drawing from Polynesian and bronze age Greece for my dragonborn to just give em a different twist. Too, I always read the blurbs in the monster manual on the different dragons to give the humanoid race a more alien yet mortal look on things. Brass’ll typically be tradesman while silver or black will be more politically inclined.

    While developing my game, I ran my players through some one shots with toons they made just to get my internet group on the same page and comfortable with the toons. My Dragonborn player was hatched in the fey, things happen and he leaves on good terms. More things happen and he's drawn into a company of elves, a halfling, a half-orc, and a Tiefling. Simple thing, go take care of the undead issue in this logging camp. The go into the old crypt, fight some things workout how to trap the zombie that can oneshot the tank... Then they find the half mad livewood door. All hell broke loose as the Tiefling wanted to burn the door down, an the had an issue with that. In comes the half-orc who's village had been burned down by a tiefling.
    What transpired was almost 2 hours of Party PvP combat mixed with realy hard RP and the most complex skill checks ever. It ended with a half orc named horntaker have taken some horns.

    One way I would do Dragonborn is connect them to kobolds. Either every Dragonborn was a kobold, or long ago, a group of kobold were blessed with draconic form and started breeding true, and now you have Dragonborn.

    Just wanted to say that you guys have been a huge help/inspiration to me and my 1st try at DND and DMing... I finally got 6 of my close friends together to roll characters and play 5e. It was hard to get them together the first session cause life is so busy lol. Now they are coordinating it themselves and begging me for availability. We are about to play our 4th session this Saturday and we are loving it. Our sessions have averaged 4-5 hours and most of us are parents with full time jobs. I had to take a 2 week hiatus to write more story for them and they are chomping at the bit.... If it wasn't for you guys I don't think I would have been able to do what I've done. Thanks guys!!

    When it comes to point-buy and standard array when building characters; I find that yes it takes longer to reach max prime stat, but often gets rid of that pesky negative penalty. Dragonborn rogue for example could keep charisma and strength lower to be able to focus on more useful stats point buy wise, but rogues get expertise to so they can be good at whatever they want to be as well. Edit I made a quick build for the character and have added to the ever expanding want to play list.

    I was tasked by my DM to create my dragonborn PC's background, which included their place of origin/culture in a homebrew forgotten realms setting. He's new to DM'ing so I wanted to give him plenty of room for hooks and creative outlets he could explore to help his campaign. The place ended up being a small colony of silver dragonborn who, because of their remoteness in the middle of a frozen wilderness, kept their silver heritage apparent compared to the mix-mutt ruddy brown most dragonborn possess in the PHB. In their creation myth, they were created thousands of years ago by a Silver Wyrm who was pursuing godhood (dragon ascendant prestige) and lived alongside this dragon in its lair until the Wyrm vanished, leaving the fledgling people to fend for themselves.
    They live spartan and mystically inclined lives, living close to the land and taking inspiration from the bitter cold that surrounds them, seeing their breath weapon as an expression of a divine connection to it. They as a race have a simple oral and written tradition and they tend to follow a weird fusion of draconic and humanoid customs, such as scrimshawing their scales with dyed, woad-like patterns that portray anything from the trials of an individual to personal expression. They do not know or remember why they were created or the fate of their creator, so some leave the enclave to find that answer with the hope to one day return in glory while others wait patiently for the Wyrm's return - seeking perfection in what they remember of the Wyrm's lessons. The dragonborn spent generations molding the vast lair into a mountain hold of grand proportions, with winding stairwells snaking their way along the mountainside, making even the most surefooted question their fear of heights. Within the mountain itself is an expansive cavern system that no one has yet found an end to, spiraling deeper into more dangerous territory until even the bravest dragonborn dare not tread further.
    It was only within the past couple hundred years that these dragonborn had any connection to civilization at large when they were discovered by a dwarven prospecting team. What may have started out as a simple trading post at the foot of the mountain underneath the ancestral home of these dragonborn eventually grew into a respectable dwarven settlement, delved into the mountain's foothills. The place attracts all kinds of wanderlust driven folk like halflings, half-elves and humans or people drawn to craft and earth like the dwarves themselves and gnomes.
    It's a very interesting and lively place, and I see it being very much like a bustling frontier type town with a rich history that the table can discover if they look deep enough.

      RadiantBurrito paladins are fun, such as Matt Colville with his order of good king olimund. In my group we've played three sorc, three fighters, a rogue. Any kind of characters class and background can work depending on your world.
      For mine, DB are a mix of argonians and Spartan military states - resistant to disease and connected to the life force of an actual dragon king, such as Gyl-Seraht or Alitin being both ancient gold dragons having Dragonborn empires they reign over. They are coastal traders and mercenary forces for other larger nations.
      Plenty of ideas! Just have fun with it. :)

    I have Dragonborn in my world closely linked with dragons. I basically have a Buddhist/Daoist ancestor worship/reincarnation thing going where if a Dragonborn lives up to their color’s sense of honor or brings honor to their clan, they can be reborn as dragons, but if a dragon is shameful they may be reborn as a Dragonborn in the next life. They worship the different aspects of the “Dragonwheel” that are based on the different colors of dragons in the spirit world. So basically, when an ancient dragon dies, they are basically a god to other dragons until they are reborn.
    So Dragonborn are all about honor so they can move up in status in the next life.

    In an old DnD world there was a place called Darksun, In DarkSun they didn't have any magic, but there were magi called Defiler that could suck the life force from around them to make magic. This would kill the land and small animals around them. Welding this type of magic slowly turned you into a dragon.

    I've created a young blue dragonborn female, Yunzu, who's an NPC in my game. She was created largely by randomization, but I adored her right away. She's a level 1 monk, but her personality screams good natured rogue, so multiclassing is going to happen - because I am totally taking her to my local AL.
    I simply have to play her as a PC, she's too fun.
    I am a relatively new DM. Am I alone in creating NPC's and falling in love with them to the extent that I almost can't stand getting to play them as PC's? I am very careful not to DMPC (I'm an experienced player, and I've never seen that done in a good way, so not falling for that) but I miss playing as a player and some of my NPC's are just screaming PICK MEEE! PLAY MEEEE!
    Is this a normal struggle for DM's?
