    Blackmagic camera app update last night now allows HDMI clean feed out. Use the apple AV Adapter initially for the iPad. Use it on the iphone 15 pro to get power pass though for charging, HDMI clean feed out, and a USB3 A port capable of fast enough speeds to USBC SSD for recording. Possible to clean feed to an external recorder if you wanted.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  9 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah there are several apps that allow clean HDMI out, and we’ve been able to do that for a long time with Lightning too - but my initial testing shows it’s not an uncompressed 4K signal. Needs to be 10-bit 422. It seems currently it’s just for monitoring and not yet a high quality output to record. But it’s early days and need to experiment more.

    Great stuff as always! I upgraded to the 15 Pro Max 1 TB as well after rocking the 11 Pro and X for the last few years. it does act as my phone as well. The X has been my phone all this time and will now be a C camera for me with the 11 Pro becoming my B camera. While I don't need Pro Res, or even Log for that matter, for my talking head stuff, I plan to use it at some point in the future. The USB C port was one of the main reasons for the upgrade along with the X not being able to run iOS 17.
    I have noticed something however regarding the USB C port. In my tests it doesn't get anywhere near the 10 Gbps speed. I know this is a theoretical maximum, but I'm getting somewhere between 70 MB/s to 190 MB/s data transfer speeds from the phone to different computers and different internal and external drives. I have a Late 2015 iMac 27" and a 2017 13" MBP. I also have access to the M1 Mac mini. The last two have TB3/4 ports capable of defaulting to 10 Gb/s speeds. And System Report shows they recognize the connections as such. The iMac has USB A ports that support 5 Gb/s. I've gotten the 190 MB/s speed, or close to it, on all 3 computers, but it's usually the MBP, surprisingly, that consistently shows the fastest speed.
    I also have a Samsung 2 TB T7 SSD. I've gotten about 300 MB/s speeds when I plug it directly into the phone. So I can definitely get much faster transfers that way and then plug that into my iMac. But I'll still end up moving those files to an external HD anyway. In the field it makes sense to use the SSD, but at home it's probably better to just transfer directly to my external HD. The SSDs are just for my Library.
    I'm just wondering if the speeds I'm getting is normal? I've not had the ability to do this, nor have I needed to look at my speeds on these in the past. I do have a Genius Bar appointment in a couple days to have them test my port, but I suspect they'll just tell me the speeds I'm getting are the real world expectations. Have you experienced anything similar, or do I possibly have a defective port? Cables are definitely rated either TB 4 or USB 3.1 or whatever flavor 10 Gb/s is so I don't think that's the issue. And I'm using a 14.85 GB video file for my tests. The computer speeds are pretty much the sustained speeds over the entire transfer. They vary a little bit, but not much. For the phone to SSD tests I just run a stopwatch to get the average speed. The Samsung USB C cable was pretty slow actually so I got new cables.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  9 месяцев назад +1

      Are you using the USB-C cable that came with the phone? Evidently that one won’t produce the USB 3 speeds and you have to use a different one, which I’ve been doing - however, I’m not seeing super fast transfer speeds yet either. I did one test of approximately 45GB via USB-C to an iMac and it took about 15 minutes. I need to do more tests though. I’ve actually still been using Airdrop a lot for smaller offloads. :) But recording to an SSD or CFast and then connecting that to a computer to transfer I’ve found is the fastest method.

  • @SteveHartmanVideos
    @SteveHartmanVideos 16 дней назад

    You mentioned only the ProRes was available via USB. But I have the iPhone 11 and using the apple card reader (via lightening port), I'm able to record H264 to a mico SD card directly. I'll have to test this again and see if they changed it.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  14 дней назад

      That hasn’t been an option until USB-C and the 15 Pro, so I’m not sure how you were doing that unless maybe there’s a hack of some kind.
      Now you could send a 1080 video signal out that was highly compressed and you could see it on an external monitor, but it wasn’t for recording. And you had to use an HDMI adapter to get to the monitor. And it was only available in certain apps like Filmic Pro or LumaFusion, though you could also do a screen recording for a tutorial to an Atomos recorder.

    Great videos, keep it up! Do you prefer a phone cage or a gimbal for filming? I am looking to add some iPhone shots to compliment my drone footage so it's not always arial footage but I can't decide which would be best for what I want to do?
    Majority of the shots would likely be pans or tracking or just static footage, so nothing thats going to be too shaky/bouncy. Look forward to hearing your opinion and if you've got the time a recommendation. Ideally I'd have a lens and a SSD attached to the phone so the cage/gimbal would hopefully accommodate both.

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  5 месяцев назад

      If you’re not moving the phone much then I think a cage is a great way to go. The universal beastgrip pro is really a great option, or their custom cages. And you could mount an SSD with an accessory onto either. And if you wanted a gimbal I would suggest getting one that’s heavier duty so you could use a phone with the cage. Like the Crane M3 or similar. ruclips.net/video/S304iLKg0kE/видео.htmlsi=abVjnLhSWMaX-9uL Lots of options to consider. Search my channel for other gimbals or rigs.

    It would be great if it were possible to capture 4K/60fps instead of only ProRes to capturing externally. The gain of course would be increased shooting time. But if one absolutely needs ProRes for whatever, well, so be it.
    Regard your cable issue and dangling external capture devices, if on the road or even on tripod in a studio, use a longer cable, carry the exteral in a shirt pocket or shoulder bag. Simple! Done! Also, I'd use external M.2 2280 (or 2238 shorter) SSDs in an external case. They are more compact, more of less similar to a pack of chewing gum, greater capacities 2TB, 4TB, etc.

All you need to do is set up the audio interface of Zoom H6 to Mac, then whether you use built-in camera app or black magic camera, it always record video with audio from Zoom H6 at the same time. BTW, once you set audio interface from Zoom, there is a “Zoom” option in Audio menu from black magic camera.

    • @CinematicAdventureOne
      @CinematicAdventureOne 9 месяцев назад +1

      There are quite a few gimbals for phone, but most of them has limited pay load and clamp width which means if you shot with a small sized SSD mounted on the back of your phone, it will never maintain balance, and by adding SSD on the back requires more clamp width to hold you phone and provides space for SSD.
      If you looking at an approach like mount SSD on a cage of grip then that will be a different story in terms of portability.
      My two cents are wait before invest your hard earned money on this under developed accessories for iPhone. Apple log, ProRes, and USB C are big things to Apple, I’m pretty sure there are third parties still developing a better all-in-one gears for these type of demands. For example, a vertical battery grip with case that has an enclosure for Nvme SSD, and usb c ports, cold shoe mount that all in one grip case might be out soon. So just wait for better solution.

    No one seems to talk about battery life when you have any of your solutions attached. Surely it must affect it considerably as the phone also has to power the SSD.

      It really doesn't consume more battery at all - I was shooting 4K 24fps ProRes Log Video direct to SanDisk Extreme Pro SD Card via some cheap USB-C card reader. My iPhone 15 Pro doesn't even heat up lesser than directly shooting into my phone storage.

      It’s still early days in testing & using this stuff, but so far it appears not to be a big issue. Though shooting lots of video period has always has affected the battery life. The SD card solution doesn’t seem to affect it at all, but SSD pulls power for the drive, so you are losing some battery life there. I’ll test it on a proper shoot in the near future.

      A usb c hub with two type c ports that must support data transfer will work.

    Question - I own 256GB version of IPhone 15 Pro Max and in black magic app when I choose the resolution at 4K, codec as - Apple Pro res 422 and color space as Apple Log I don't know why I can record for 3 hours at (4K24), 2 and half at (4K30) and 1hr 15 mins at (4K60) whereas in the native camera app the Max time at (4K24) is 35mins and (4K30) is 30mins.
    Why is there such a big difference in how much time you can record?
    Is the native camera app using some special codec for LOG or its just limiting the record time to save space on your phone for other things?

    • @iphoneographers
      @iphoneographers  8 месяцев назад +1

      The native camera app only records in ProRes HQ. So the files are much bigger. But I also think the media indicators aren’t super accurate in third-party app especially.

      @@iphoneographers With ProRes HQ I a getting 59 Mins of recording. SO not sure if there is like an extra limit on the native camera app that's caps it to 30mins or the black magic app is showing inaccurate. Only one way to find out though lol have to record and see if it goes above 30 mins.

    It takes a long time to offload ProRes from the phone, 35min is about 170GB, have fun with moving that off the phone. The external SSD (tops at 1000Mb/sec) is faster but still too slow for me.

    Nice video, but when you hold the phone and shake it while you're talking, it doesn't look so good. It's kinda annoying. Nice, helpful video, though.

    One expandable storage, like external memory card slot, will solve all those problems, But Apple won’t let you doing that because they can’t make money from you by that.
