Ya my wife and I we have a 2004 Honda pilot 240.00 miles and it's starting to miss fire as well just need a a new alternator and a new Cadillac converter and new spark plugs 🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈🎈
VTM4 light comes on automatically with the check engine light. Generally the vtm4 is OK But the car disables it for some reason maybe because it’s down on power? The valves definitely need adjusted on this car first. It’s basically choking because the valves get too tight on one side on these cars. The intake tube also needs to be replaced so the map sensor can see the right amount of air. The exhaust of course needs a replacement too so the 02 sensors can see what they need to see. I’d change the air filter as well. The ports that you cleaned usually aren’t a problem on 06-08 pilots those are a problem on the 04-05s because they have these little veins that get clogged. Take off the EGR and see if it’s blocked and blow some air down through it and out the intake manifold with the cover off. That area can be clogged. Be sure you use only oem spark plugs.
Stickercutting.com I have an 2013 Honda Pilot .. and that just happened to me on d road.... I don’t know what to do... should I keep driving it... iam about 550 miles to my home.. I took it to a shop and the guy said it could be d spark plugs...
My 2 cents is make sure the timing is spot on the marks through the timing covers, possibly the throttle positing sensor on the throttle body, could be the rear differential vtm -4 sensor but it requires there to be no engine light so that needs to be fixed first.
Has the timing belt been replaced? Every 105,000 miles replace it. Adjust valves according to manufacturer specs. They will need adjustment no doubt after 200K. Use only Honda fluids, none other. V-tec is great, but requires good oil pressure and proper valve adjustment. Mine is a 2005 and has over 220K runs great. Also check emissions sensors and O sensor/ air fuel mixture. Lastly, compression test. My bet is the timing belt.
Driven by Boost she was a dirty, dirty girl. So satisfying, right? It didn’t help the engine at all, but it was just like deep cleaning a dirty carpet.
The pilot has three convertors and if one is malfunctioning, then the VTM4 light comes and disengages the VTM lock. Also replace the O2 sensors if you replace the convertors
1st gen Pilots don't have a typical rear diff. There're clutches between the diff output shafts and rear wheel axles which are normally disengaged. That's why the other wheel won't turn in the opposite direction when you rotate one of the rear wheels manually. When you put it into VTM-4 Lock the clutches are supposed to engage and transfer torque to the wheels, but since you have VTM-4 light on the system is just not working. I think you need to start with the engine first, fixing rough idle and misfire which are most likely due to valve not being adjusted for a long time and now being way out of spec. Hopefully it didn't burn any exhaust valve yet
Spot on. There are no spider gears in the rear diff like he was expecting with his little "spin this tire the other tire should go the other way" nope! Those clutches don't care about that haha. The rear diff is fine.
Exactly. Running the vehicle before checking the valves was unwise... especially since it was obvious the previous owner neglected almost all maintenance, including the transfer case gear oil & rear diff fluid.
And when it does work you don’t need to press the VTM4 button in normal driving to have the pilot automatically (computer controlled) transfer torque to any of the four wheels that need it. Splits power to back on acceleration. Runs as front wheel drive while cruising. Normally is great in snow as it applies power to any of the four wheels that are gripping and little/none to the ones slipping. The VTM4 lock at low speeds only forces some torque to be at the back in addition to the front. Again it works great normally. Your video test does not actually show if it’s working or not as all four lifted means all four slipping.
Any engine with an exhaust leak that large and not fixed soon can cause valves to burn. They will overheat and leak compression. Get you a compression tester and compare the cylinder compressions.
First just say no to the anti-seize on spark plug threads, instead use the proper tool for the job - a quality thread chaser followed by installing the plugs dry like the manufacturer intended, after all that’s why they went to all the trouble to plate the threads of their plugs with that shiny anti-seize coating… it ensures proper torque can be applied and it won’t interfere with the grounding ability of the plug especially in modern engines.
I had the same 6 cyl missfire issue on my 2007 honda pilot with 190,000 miles and I fixed it by adjusting the valve clearance myself. I found out that all the exhaust valves are tight compared to the factory setting.
Okay. I don't know if anyone noticed that when you tried to start the engine repeatedly getting out of the yard, I heard the engine sound like it had no or low compression on at least one of the cylinders. Those engines are known for the valves getting tight and need adjusting with high mileage on them. But judging by how bad the intake looked, the last owner didn't give it any love. So yeah. Try adjusting the valves. As some others here have mentioned, the VTM-4 lock won't engage if the check engine and VSA lights are on. Also, VTM-4 lock is only available in 1st, 2nd and reverse. Speaking of VSA, that's your traction control.
@@NotSoHandyCarGuy I've heard issues where these motors can burn valves when not properly maintained. Unfortunately, it's not an easy fix because you would need to remove the head and replace the valves in the effected cylinder. But, after seeing the amount of crud that was inside that intake, you might be better off sourcing a good, used engine.
So I actually just got some valve feelers in the mail yesterday. I'm going to adjust the valves and swap out the injectors while I have the manifold and valve covers off. Hopefully I'll get that video out next week or so.
I know this is an old video but change the oil my pilot has done this twice now misfiring codes every cylinder and a code for vtec and cat. Oil change fixed everything.
You need to attack those lights. Each one is a clue to a problem. Also the vsa light will be your wheel speed sensors and vtm-4 wont work unless all the wheel speed sensors are working properly. Attack the lights on the dash and youll get it back. Just be sure to update the timing belt. Sounds like maintenance was not kept up at all one tooth slip and this whole car is trash.
We have 2 Honda and almost all major brands from US, Japan and Europe over 45 years and we keep saying Thank You TOYOTA. It’s the brand of durability and reliability at the lowest cost of maintenance period
Sorry don't know if I deleted everything but ment to say oil temperature sensor in back on the so called pumpkin 😂. But changed that sensor an it fixed mine an 4 wheel drive works lights out. An I'm not to well to do for so I'm a backyard person believe me an I was always told change the little minor things 1st an if that don't fix it than try something else😬. But ok sir hope that helps ur buddy out.👍an I'm sorry I had to change I EGR valve also cause it had a misfire it fixed the engine light an the vtm4 light also for about 4 hours than the VTM4 light comes back on an than changed that temperature sensor. Lights are out an 4wheel working good again...! That's what I meant to say. Once again my bad 😃
Ok, I'll try those! I tried cleaning the MAF, and we ran a can of seafoam in the tank. But we haven't tried replacing the MAF or letting the seafoam soak on the pistons. Thanks!
Flashing check engine light means engine warns you to shut it off. It may stall for that reason. It’s really chocking to death. Your vtm light is also on. Check errors not guessing and rotating wheels by hand. In rear diff is a single sensor that may be bad. Also rear diff special fluid should be regularly changed. Every 30k. If it was not done in time it may ruin clutches in diff. Basically video shows that this particular Pilot just wants to retire and Rest In Peace.
Drove mine for about a month with the blinking cel , id just feather the throttle every so softly. It looked like he put on advance house brand coils dont know how good those are, also he didnt show what brand plugs he installed hondas only like ngks or denso.
Hi if the vtm4 light is on, there is a oil dif sensor in the back, 80 bucks, that’s a common problem for vtm4, also your awd goes off the abs sensor as well. And your vsa off button is traction control, if you have more questions my ig is khamkham912

So I just took the fuel pump out and rinsed down the fuel filter really well with water, then let it dry. I couldn’t find just the filter anywhere- I think you’d have to buy the entire pump if you want to replace the filter

Check the VTEC solenoid oil screen, that can cause it to run rough. The VSA off button will shut the traction control off.

After that check valve adjustment if timing ok.

it sounds like mine I cut off the mufflers haha

i just fixed little of it still little hole it was a muffler disconnected from pipe
I would like to know how capable is a Pilot in off-road conditions
