Became a mechanic thanks to etc videos, watched them since 2008! From when I was a young kid 9 years old! Made my life now 10000 times easier diagnosing issues!, It's unbelievable how much I learned thanks to etc Channel! Went to mechanic school graduated so easily thanks to these videos! From 9 year old, and actually gave me lots of experience (yes virtual but yet experience)
I bought a 2005 Pilot brand new. I put 120K miles on it, sold it to my inlaws who put another 20K miles on it, then bought it back for my son. At 170K miles it still runs great and has been trouble free. I've done some of the things on your list (timing belt, brakes, suspension, tie rods) but am really looking forward to watching all your videos.
I bought a 2003 Honda Pilot a few years ago it had close to 100k miles when we bought it, a few years later I sold it to one of my siblings and it had close to 200k miles, and is still running. Best buy ever!
1st thing, that came into my mind with cables hooked into the airtemp-sensor: The ebay "Tune-ECUs"! Mostly they are small resistors and got hooked up to cheat the ECU into thinking the air is at a different temp, to get a whole lot of snake-oil claims: better gas mileage, more power, better emissions - you name it. Have a nice day! Simmie
Thanks Eric for helping fix my Pilot. One suggestion is to inspect for rust just in front of the spare tire, where the subframe bolts connect to the body. You'll maybe not notice if one side is bad, but when the second side pulls out, the rear suspension drops down .. No fun if it happens without warning .. I'm looking forward to the supercharger build. Thanks again.
Eric: Unlike your other Honda V6 engines you've been working on, this one has the PCV valve rear valve cover, and the fresh air port (from the intake tube) on the front valve cover next to the oil cap. That means the rear head is the one filled with crankcase fumes and gets ALL the baked on crap. So on this particular engine it's safe to assume the rear head is at least twice as gunked up as the front head. This design annoyed me cause checking under the oil cap was a lie and only revealed the "cleanest" section of the engine (where fresh air comes in).
I bought a 2005 Honda Pilot with 200,000 miles and just did a cross country trip west coast to east coast and had no issues whatsoever, also on my trip my friends 2002 Excursion 7.3 diesel ran out of gas on the interstate..(which was scary moment because had concrete barriers on both sides on both lanes) i hooked up 2- 1 inch tow straps to my tow package to his Excursion and towed him with my pilot 1/2mile and up an exit ramp with another 1/4mile to the gas station!....Pilots rock
Can't wait because we have a 05...I am definitely interested in transmission info about remove and replace. I will be watching with anticipation. Thanks again for the great work you do!
As the proud owner of an '05 EX Pilot, I love and depend on Eric's videos (yes I did my timing belt, thanks!). But supercharged? You madman! I can't wait. PS I grabbed a factory aux trans cooler from my local auto wrecker, and it was a breeze to install (after flushing, of course).
I like SUVs mainly because of the higher ride height. In my country, roads are pretty bad for lower standing vehicles such as sedans and minivans. It's a nightmare. Granted, SUVs are a little bit more expensive to maintain, but if you have the money, you like them and suit your needs, go for one. They are very practical vehicles for what they are, too.
My son is a 2004 pilot ex with around 285,000 miles. Already replaced the transmission and radiator. He also bought a complete exhaust system from where you got your exhaust for your element. The exhaust by the catalytic converter was rusted.
They may have bypassed the factory trans cooler so they wouldn’t get the “milkshake of death”. (A common problem with pilot and ridgeline the fitting on the radiator).
Hmm .... you bring up a great point. Perhaps they already made the milkshake and were trying to see if they could save it with a flush, fresh fluid and an external cooler. The milkshake issue is a known problem on my 08 Nissan Titan so when I developed a small radiator leak, I went ahead and put down the change for an all aluminum radiator (without the internal cooler) and added an external cooler. Now only God can make the strawberry milkshake of death.
My exact thought when saw that. Typically should put in the much larger oem tranny cooler did that to my 2005 pilot EX-L a few years ago as precentative to avoid my tranny to be screwed when the faulty radiator goes.
Eric here is a tip for ya , I worked at Honda for 26 years and my hobby was wrenching on cars and I imagined at a young age a career in auto repair industry so I ended up staying updated by my hobby and working on all the cars for all my buddies I worked with and their families and friends so naturally a lot of those were Honda’s and one of my many secrets I picked up along the way was as a employee I got a discount on all the oem parts I ordered thru service center but I discovered that if I ordered those parts online thru a place called majestic Honda which by the way is a dealer up north east like New Hampshire or Massachusetts or something like that been three or four years since I have ordered parts from them by now but the point is I got a bigger discount than I got from the service center located on factory grounds and some were substantial so if you want to give it a try and you can wait few days for delivery you could save alot money and the exploded diagram on the website was especially convenient and helpful also when getting those oem part numbers anyhow good luck and don’t let them wrenches get rusty.
I did that for a while from a place called HondaPartsNow. Thing is, after you factor in shipping, the cost is about the same. Also, since I'm in OH, I get the parts faster from the dealer since most of them come from Troy anyway. Thanks for the heads up and comment.
Alrighty then...attaching a supercharger to a 200k+mile J series! I hope the transmission rebuild is solid! This is going to be an interesting rejuvenation and mod series!
I remember driving a 2000 TL, dreading the inevitable P0740. Never showed up. The transmission failed, but I got a P0750 code instead. Sold it to a tech at the Honda dealer for $400. Eric, you told me I should ask for more, but I was so PO'd that I just wanted it gone. Fun times. The only confirmed fix for those cars was to fit a 2006/7 Accord V6 transmission in.
Having pulled a salvage yard motor in July 2021 for my bro-in-law's 2004 Pilot, all of this is intimately familiar. Not a veteran wrench on Honda products. But we did a good job, got it running, drove it to a local garage to do some gasket work that, frankly, I was kind of wiped out to do. Garage said *I* did a good job with the timing belt/water pump, go me. The 00's Pilots don't feel much like an SUV as they don't ride like trucks. But now I'm familiar with the 3.5, I'm looking around for 'distressed' Honda Odysseys that need an engine or trans swap to make them good again.
It just occurred to me - I watch two Eric’s. One’s a car guy and one isn’t (Eric O. , who firmly declares he’s not a car guy any more. As for the Pilot - supercharger, lower, replace trans with 4 on the floor, do an E brake, Recaro seats and take it drifting!
This video really hits home. We have an 06 pilot that's been surprisingly not a headache to work on. AND just yesterday someone in an accord lost a ball joint RIGHT in front of our driveway and just left it there with no note or anything saying they were coming back for it...
This will be good content Eric. You kind of lost me during the Fairmont build, but I am totally on board with this and cant wait for the next video to come out!
I think he lost a lot of people with the fairmont build. I would watch all of his videos and now I watch maybe 2 every few months because of that series.
3:11 me too, Eric. Any time I dismount a tire, I clean the bead seat. Same reason why I refuse to use bead sealer on bead seats unless the wheel has a crack; then I'll use it as a bandaid (after informing the customer, obviously).
We have a 2004 Pilot, with about 185k on it. Bought it with about 85k on it. The trans finally gave up. As you stated, it wasn’t worth the effort playing with solenoids and such. Without having a lift, it had to go to a shop for a reman unit. They also installed an external cooler in series. Everything else works great. Regarding towing, note that Honda requires extra power steering cooling. The factory piece costs $$$ and just has a little more tubing and a few more fins. My idea is to get a second standard cooler from a wrecking yard and add it in series. The left rear power window quit and I bought an OEM replacement. It was a HUA day and I convinced myself the mounting holes didn’t line up so I hogged them out to no avail. I continued the HUA adventure by buying a D****n unit. Then I discovered what needed to be moved to make the unit fit. Bottom line: I have an OEM left rear unit with elongated holes that hasn’t been powered up. Let me know if you need it.
Yep Eric, I agree on if ur poor, SUV isn't the way to go. Jst like V6's more parts/ more money. Im interested to see what u do with the back bumper. Cant wait til ur done!😁
Even though I loath SUVs, you have now piqued my interest on this project. Doesn't mean I will change my mind in buying one, for the reasons you stated in this video and your previous videos, but I really enjoy watching your builds. Can't wait to see how this turns out!
Yes! I can’t wait for this series! I’d LOVE to supercharge my Ridgeline and letting you work out all of the bugs first sounds like a great plan to me! :)
I just seen a video on the headlight deal, I have seen WD40 etc, but this one was using, Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish, Worked great, it's only been 4 days, but seriously worked great. Did the mostly red taillights too, works good. Real good.
Complex suspension on those cars. Having that lift looks so nice. I would be a dream to have all those parts floating at chest level instead of working off the ground. Looking forward to the rebuild.
Yes this should be fun and well worth watching the future videos on it because i have the exact same vehicle. Even the same color! Mine is a 2008 and I will definitely be watching this video series as I'm sure I will gain some valuable knowledge from it. Thanks for posting!
I am with you on that, lol.....I dont care for or like SUV's myself. But I enjoy your videos, and cant wait to see where #HackHawk takes you....I'm down! Currently enjoying #ETCGDadstruck playlist
I just recently picked up an 05 Pilot AWD with 220k. Engine and trans are great, cold ac, newer all weather tires, laundry list of new front end components. Picked it up for $1500 because the rear sub frame is rotted. I changed the front and rear brakes, spark plugs, timing belt and water pump on it. I'm a truck driver so I only drive it a few times a month and then we take it on long trips every couple months. Should last a few years before that rear sub frame mount gives out completely 😅
That's a good price, honestly it's not BAD. I remember when these were new. A friend of mines Dad had a brand new one. Leather interior. It was fancy for back then
Just replace the entire lower control arm. Fairly quick job, and easier than replacing all the bushings. I did my stabilizer links at the same time also.
I have a 2008 pilot with 100,000 and still looks like new, I can’t wait to see you add stuff to yours to put on mine. As a race of any type I just don’t see it ITS SUPER HEAVY.
Thank you for buying. Silver 03 pilot around the exact same time i bought a silver 03 pilot there is no good videos of the 03 with that intake style on RUclips
I have an 06 Pilot I bought back in November 2020. I had the entire timing belt water pump kit replaced along with NGK laser spark plugs and cheap eBay coils. The front end was clunking therefore replaced the stabilizer bushings & links. The lower arm bushes were worn so had those replaced. While I was at it, also took care of the transmission fluid and filter, these where Honda Acura parts. So far it’s been a very comfortable ride, I’d say it handles better than it’s competitors the Toyota Highlander and Lexus RX. However, the built quality on the Highlander and RX of the same vintage is better due to them being Japanese made.
Transmission shift sensors are notorious for failing. May not be the transmission. I know you said you worked @ Acura. I have an 05. Also, MaxLife transmission fluid works just fine. 183K miles. Looking forward to seeing what I can learn.
Well, it's certainly been around the block a few times - and it's got the scars to prove it. But all that wear & tear makes for excellent video material. Looking forward to it already! 😊🚗
Honestly, I think this Pilot was well maintained in its early life as evidenced by the lack of significant oil leaks. Then it went to someone who didn't really care and traded it in for something else. I think this ended up at auction and was picked up by the used car dealer that sold it to Jennifer. Now it's my turn. Have a great weekend.
I have a 2007 honda pilot. They are usually good if taken care of. Maintenance items I've had with it are as follows: wheel hub replacement, timing belt replacement, shock stop, tailgate latch assembly and ac assembly line replacement. Planning on adding a tow receiver if I find one at a decent price. Can't wait to see the supercharger on there
My 2003 has the factory towing package which has only been used a couple of times. I’ve replaced door lock actuators and the rear air blower relay a couple of times. Mine has the rear entertainment system and it all still works. One of the best cars I’ve owned since my 1997 Accord
My wife has a 2004 Pilot the same color with 223,000 miles. It needs a lot of work, but it still runs and drives pretty good. There is a lot of rust and bad bushings underneath. Also needs engine mounts and a tune up. I'll get it all done eventually. Maybe
I saw recently posted a Honda accord, they said everything was great on it except ...... the needed new transmission.. dohh . epic of honda Automatic of its day, circa 2003.
Eric, get a water to air intercooler, and a heat exchanger, run the water for the W2A through the heat exchanger, and plumb the other half of it to the AC system to cool the water. Look up Killer Chiller, it's a really good design, keeps the intake temps way down.
Thanks for sharing. Given the chip shortage, and the price of used vehicles, that is great deal. We just replaced my wife's vehicle and paid 2/3 the sticker price of what the vehicle was new 12 years ago. If there wasn't a chip and new vehicle shortage, "Normal Times", I think the price would have been about 40%. What the vehicle had going for it, was low mileage, less 25k. There is a lot that needs to be done to make this Pilot "Road Worth" and the extras that "might as well be done" while you are in there....("One thing, leads to another")......... It makes sense. I agree that SUVs are expensive for the reasons you mention but, I would say that Pilot is on the lower end of "Cost of Ownership" when looking at SUVs
These days I use Valvoline MaxLife ATF in my '98 CRV and '05 Pilot....been using it for around eight years. It's a synthetic and I like it better than Honda's ATF...and it's much cheaper($17.89/gal at Walmart) to boot.
My dad's first pilot, which was ironically another silver 2003, also had the same thing happen with the 3rd row seat not folding down because the release handle broke. It was actually fixed under warranty so unfortunately I don't know what they did to fix that but I do know that it is a common problem on those things.
You bought this car about a month after I bought my 2007 pilot I've done the front and rear suspension as you plan to do. Looking forward to watching your supercharge this thing. I will tell you there is a plate you can purchase for this car to adapt that supercharger it does not have an intercooler though. Texas Honda channel did this on a pilot about 6 months ago if you want to look it up.
That was great of you to buy it from the woman you gave the van to. It's great to know that there still are some good people in this shit hole of self absorbed me too world. Looks like a fun project.
I'm curious to see you mount what i'm pretty sure is a GM 3800 series II intake onto that if you use it. Those M90's added 40 hp to the series II V6's giving them 240 at the crank. The later series III 3800 had an improved M90 which added 60 hp giving it 260. they weren't ran with intercoolers from the factory either. I'm looking forward to this.

We had an 03 Pilot bought new in 2002, drove it till 2018 and gave it the daughter-in-law. Still running strong.
I’m glad you bought this from her. Would not want her or her kid in that with the shape it’s in now!

I can't wait to see the videos that will transform a Honda Pilot into the beast called HACKHAWK! Enjoy all your videos ERIC.
I own a 2003 Honda Pilot EX-L. 261000 miles. love this thing
Sounds like a fun project for the channel good luck Eric!! 👊👊👊👊👊
Betting the intake air temp splice goes to one of those "fuel saver" chips/tuners
I remember seeing ads in magazines, about the time fuel injection was becoming popular.
Awesome buy! Can't wait for more videos on the fix/build.
VTM stands for Variable Torque Management. You can find information about it on the inside of the drivers sun visor.
Hot rod Honda Pilot. Sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. Give 'er!
Your gen pilot has way more head room than those Toyota you mentioned.
Also the pilot is way easier to work on
Than the Toyota.
HackHawk!!! Good stuff boss!! This video series just got a helluva lot more interesting!! #THNX4THESHIRT #ETCG1
Can’t wait to see the upcoming videos!!
Wish it had a 2.4L motor, would love to see a series showing a supercharger being placed on one. looking forward to seeing these work in progress.
Looking at buying an 04' EX and this video will help me a bunch on what to look for
I'm really excited to see this repair/build series. Thanks for your swell videos and dedicated career.
@@ericthecarguy At least it has finally fallen into the right hands. Have a great weekend too. 😊🚗
Sounds like its gonna be an awsome ride. I havent been this excited since the fairmont.
Maybe
I always enjoy your content Eric because you are very knowledgeable and also a fellow Honda/Acura enthusiast.
As a pilot owner THANK YOU!! Love the videos.
Yes please do that excellent idea I have that exact pilot ... Loving it this is going to be fun
Yes!!!! Finally I get to see always wanted to do a supercharger in a pilot and now your doing it I'm super excited to see what you can get out it.😁😁😃
First thought that came to mind was SuperPilot but HackHawk is a good name as well. Looking forward to all the upcoming videos.
Fun video series idea! This is what I wanted to do to my Odyssey as a teenager lol
I saw recently posted a Honda accord, they said everything was great on it except ...... the needed new transmission.. dohh . epic of honda Automatic of its day, circa 2003.
Just want to say your content has been excellent lately, just really good meat and potatoes stuff! Keep it up!
Thank you!
You really saved that family. Anyway, looking forward to what you do with the pilot.
No oil leaks and look inside the motor for the mileage looks super clean 👌
I think it was well maintained early in its life.
@@ericthecarguy I agree very well maintained and the amount of rust is actually impressive for the vehicles location and state was very well cared for
Eric, get a water to air intercooler, and a heat exchanger, run the water for the W2A through the heat exchanger, and plumb the other half of it to the AC system to cool the water.
Look up Killer Chiller, it's a really good design, keeps the intake temps way down.
I have a p2r intake manifold spacer on my J35Y2 (2015 Accord V6 6 speed manual) along with ported and polished intake runners… the Tq gains are nice!
I like the idea of fixing it up and selling it with the (hopeful) profit being used to fund the next Fix It Forward build. Liking this Pilot
It was actually fixed under warranty so unfortunately I don't know what they did to fix that but I do know that it is a common problem on those things.
looking forward to the series of videos to come Eric
It does sound like fun.
A supercharged pilot, the ultimate sleeper ha ha
Can't wait😁👊🏾👍🏾
Thank you very much for posting this video Eric! Love your content. Have a great day!
i watched his videos since i was little
@@pennsylvaniahvacproduction6658 He's got such a friendly and informative personality!
Yes, this is going to be a fun series.
Wow that interior makes my 170k mile beater look showroom fresh.
A lot of great interior ideas though.
I found his channel during my research. He provided a lot of useful info. Thanks for the comment.
HackHawk made me laugh - looking forward to the project!
The "Hack Hawk" - L.O.L. I love it! :-D I have a feeling that this "Hack Hawk" series is gonna be fun *evil laughter*
That was great of you to buy it from the woman you gave the van to. It's great to know that there still are some good people in this shit hole of self absorbed me too world. Looks like a fun project.
Yes, but why? Did she not have enough $ to keep it running? Is that why we got the lecture on no SUV’s for financially strapped persons?
Looking forward to this Pilot series. Thanks man !!
