I like the OVAs the most. Trust and Betrayal is one of the best pieces of fiction I've ever seen, period. In fact, I would love to see a retelling of the series with that style. In other words: I'd love to see a seinen version of all the arcs; (almost) no humour.
Also, the OVA that tells the ending is... wow. That really made me appreciate Kaoru's suffering. Reflections doesn't really try to adapt anything. What they did was showing you Kaoru's perspective of Kenshin suffering and also her role (and frustrations) as her wife. If you look at it that way, you enjoy it more.

    • @iganpparamarta8813

You're not alone. It'd be cool to see Kenshin and other characters as normal human instead of superhuman. They are just more dedicated in learning sword fighting while others treat sword as an expensive golf clubs to show off haha
Aside from Hiko chopping off bodies of thugs in the opening and Kenshin cut a trunk of wood during Kiheitai audition, T&B OVA is perfect.

The very first anime series I ever watched were Rurouni Kenshin, DBZ, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Cowboy Bebop. Rurouni Kenshin holds a special place in my heart and I watch at least one Samurai X related work every year around the Christmas holidays. I just finished rewatching Trust and Betrayal for the twenty something time and now I want to re-live the entire series again!

Late 90's, ordered fansubbed tapes off this interesting thing called "the internet" after watching episode 12 at an Anime club we would visit every now and then. To be fair, the club was in another Province and pretty much required an overnight stay, so we would make a weekend of it. To this day, my favorite anime. Everything about the Kyoto Arc is fire (heh), I love all the characters involved because almost all of them are fleshed out so well. Soujiro's and Anji's backstories are heart wrenching and you can understand why they ended up on the path that they did... Damn, getting the urge to watch the Kenshin vs. Cho fight now.

  • @figmenter
    @figmenter 2 года назад +9

totally agree. The way I finished the series was watching the 90s anime, minus some of the filler, then proceeding to read the manga from where the anime picked off.
That way, I got those really awesome scores from the anime to play in my head while reading the manga.
Man, the scores from RK were sick. I can listen to them all day.

Fun fact: Here in Latin America we got the anime as Samurai X and all the serie was dubbed in Colombia, i mention the dub because when the movie was released it was dub in Mexico with a complete different cast despite sharing the same Samurai X name, and both OVAs series were never dubbed even when the anime was really popular here

  • @xStarlitBreathX

Honestly, I don't understand why there was a New Kyoto Arc when it was already animated flawlessly in the TV series and there was the Jinchu arc just sitting there completed in manga form begging to be turned into anime.
I'm hoping that this new series will animate Jinchu and Hokkaido in the same animation style as the TV series with all the same Japanese seiyuu and music composer. Perhaps it's a bit too much to ask for, but I just pray that it does the mangaka truly proud.

I might end up getting the manga for that third arc. Kyoto was awesome, and I felt like Kenshin confronting his battosai successor was the perfect way to end the series and to atone for his sins.

Second Samurai X OVA sucks, kills Kaoru's character and just terrible story. Excellent watch guide! Would honestly recommend watching the christian arc and the buried treasure mini arc, plus 2 of the hilarious filler episodes of season 3 of the 90's anime. Otherwise Season 3 is pretty bad overall. Also I am SO GLAD that we agree new kyoto arc is a piece of trash. As a sidenote I really enjoy the filler of season 1 cuz I like the characters and its really just the characters interacting in their everyday lives with little bits of growth (especially for Yahiko), I personally find that really enjoyable. Honestly think the visuals in Season 2 of the anime are so amazing that I prefer the anime over the manga for the kyoto arc specifically. Particularly one scene that was done incredibly in the anime that wasn't nearly as impactful as in the manga was the scene where Kenshin departs for Kyoto and says farewell to Kaoru. Like if you haven't seen the anime in a while I would reccommend you go back and watch that scene, the visuals and the soundtrack gives me CHILLS. The visuals aren't nearly as dramatic in the manga. Some of the Soundtrack for Season 2 was totally amazing. Overall think the manga and the anime are pretty much even, (manga having the slight edge pre-Kyoto arc and Dead even during Kyoto Arc).

Yes. Some things are changed/cut out but more or less it gives you a basic version of the story

    Watch order and why
Rurouni Kenshin: Trust/Betrayal - It explains everything as to why he is the way he is in the series. It also explains his issues with going back to Kyoto and fight Shishio.
The Anime - This explains itself.
Rurouni Kenshin: The Motion Picture - Watch this somewhere after the Kyoto arc
Rurouni Kenshin: Reflection - While it's not liked by most it's still a good watch. It's a different take on the cliche ending of Rurouni Kenshin.
    Extras
Rurouni Kenshin: New Kyoto Arc - Doesn't need to be watched to get anything new to the story
As for your video it's decent, but misses on a lot of things. Like the New Kyoto Arc was a retelling from Misao's POV. Rurouni Kenshin wasn't cancelled, it just ended. The Reflections OVA is great but hated because it doesn't end Rurouni Kenshin in the cliche way that all the good guys live happily ever after. Trust/Betrayal was okayed by the creator of the series and even they stated it's a prequel to the anime.

Im sure the new tv series is a reboot of the manga. I know its for sure a reboot of the 90s series. I just hope they learn from its failure of a season 3 and make it true to the manga.
Which i hope they do the same with Berserk. Because that was also magically

    The OVA would be first...

But then it would kinda ruin the story structure. The backstory should’ve just been in the Jinchu arc, the final arc of the series, like it was intended to.

if you want to see "female version of Kenshin"...
Moribito: Guardian of the Sacred Spirit
Battousei Balsa, similar to Battousei Kenshin, now seeks to save the same number of lives that she has taken, though she uses a spear, and damn, this is some of the best spear combat choreography of all time, there's only a few fight scenes, but they're really epic and insanely good
(the main story/plot has to do with this supernatural stuff, which I find really lame, and it's a bit slow, as well, but once you get to learning about Balsa's past, and her fights and her master's, it's really good, and also has some good scenes between Balsa and the prince that she got stuck protecting, Bala's "mother" skills, are not "gentle", lol)
(also, it has really really good music in it as well, and the art/animation still holds up very well, it's really good)

you are giving it too big shoes to fit. Serei no Moribito is its own thing and shouldn't be expected to compare to an all-time shounen classic like Rurouni Kenshin.

can we talk about how the author is a confirmed cp enjoyer? it’s just so jarring because his works are so good and wholesome, it really fucks me up man
