Very great and nuanced take. Both views are completely valid. I don't see why people think we have to a black and white view of this kind of thing, like it's a reflection of your own morality. Sometimes artists can make something greater than themselves.

Am I the only one wondering about who actually made the dvds in the first place?
Who financed the production? Who were the traffickers? Who looked the other way?
I think we could go on forever about how terrible Watsuki Nobuhiro is and
whether or not it's ok to read Kenshin but unless something is done about
trafficking rings it's not really going to help the children much.
The problem is that some organizations which are supposed to be
protecting children from traffickers are actually collaborating with traffickers.
I think the situation is far more messed up than any of us actually can comprehend.

but Nobuhiro Watsuki wasn't involved into child trafficking

    • @mrsticky005
      @mrsticky005 Год назад +9

I never said that he was.
Watsuki was arrested because he had possession of illegal dvds
      involving minors.
Now since I doubt Watsuki was
involved in the production of those
      DVDs then that means someone
      else likely was...traffickers.
As far as Watsuki goes he did his time. People can make their own
      choices about watching Kenshin.
But either way it’s not going to change the fact that minors were taken advantage of.
What would is if trafficking rings
      actually faced justice.

@@mrsticky005 He didn't get them illegal. He got them many years back when it was legal. And to be clear, the content he had, at least by all the information I saw, only featured nudity, which is still legal in many major countries, including Germany and many states in the US.
That said, Watsuki admitted he has a problem and has sought mental help for it.
In other words, he's a pdophile. He's never harmed a kid, and by all accounts, doesn't seem like the type that would. He's just got an unfortunate attraction. Some people can accept that. Some people can't.
I personally don't believe in condemning him over that as long as he's never harmed anyone. As long as he doesn't act on it, it's a mental illness like any other, and I wish him the best of luck in dealing with it.

I appreciate how mature Ryan is for his real talk content and in general. I got into anime because of Kenshin and Yu Yu Hakusho's mature themes that I didn't find in any other media. It's important to recognize art for the way it affects you, and not purely based on the creator or any face value.

As an artist myself, Watsuki used to be my hero and I had even met the man and shook his hand at Comic Con. When the info about his tastes came out, it was soul crushing, especially since he's not an artist that had been associated with loli characters or fan service.
From what I understand, the DVDs in Watsuki's possession were from before they became illegal to have and he just had not disposed of them yet, but details have been hard to verify. It does seem like the incident has not caused his wife (and writer since Buso Renkin) to leave him since they're still working on Hokkaido arc together.
That said, I do find it ironic that the author of great story about a murderer finding redemption and repenting his crimes is not allowed the same redemption in the eyes of modern society even though he paid the debt asked of him (even though it was far too light) and has apologized for it.
Like Ryan pointed out, if we use modern technology, we are all guilty in some way of abetting in the destruction of lives, but choose to ignore it for the sake of convenience.
I do continue to appreciate Watsuki's art in the hope that his apology was as genuine as his creation's and as a Christian, I believe that no mistake is unforgivable if the repentance for it is true, but I will also say that I will forever be deeply, bitterly disappointed and disgusted in those past mistakes.

I was elated when I saw the reveal for this new series, especially because of all the filler in the og and how much great content from the manga and ovas which was adapted for the live action never made it to anime. It's ridiculous that there are people who feel ("feel", because it's an emotional response) a person's whole life should be destroyed because they committed a crime or did something they find reprehensible. Some people are acting as if he was the one committing the actual acts themselves. It's also not up to individuals to decide how much punishment someone should receive - that's what laws and the justice system is for (and he paid what was owed). How about giving people a chance to grow from their mistakes and experiences and do better instead of condemning them for eternity. Ask questions such as, "Did he learn and has he made improvements?", rather than going, "He should have received more severe punishment (suffering)" or "He shouldn't be allowed to publish manga ever again!". Like, what does that do besides prove your indoctrination and inhumanity?

If authorities are aware of it and decide not to punish the criminal, a much much greater injustice has been perpetrated. Injustices are evil. Humans have always fought evil because it's inefficent, it's harmful, it makes people suffer and unhappy. That's why since the beginning of time Legal Systems were made. Thanks to them most people (not all of course. sadly there will always be some criminals around) regardless of their thoughts or morals behave like a lawful-good individual. That's why our societies prosper. Like one of my favourite fictional D&D characters said: "Justice purges evil. Once all have been cleansed, the Multiverse achieves perfection".
It's true that everything and everyone is a Ying-Yang symbol. No one is the ultimate evil nor the ultimate good. We all have our pros and cons (dark side) but some individuals have a bigger dark side than others. Adolf Hitler surely was very kind, caring and loyal with his loved ones or followers. His core idea (soul) was improving Human Race by making it stronger, smarter, healthier, etc. but that means we must praise him for that? Even if we now have the same goal but instead of his horrible methods (killing the dumb, weak, ill) we use gyms, schools, medical science, environment protecting laws, etc.? NO WAY The same goes with drug "lords" and their beloved families, etc. Watsuki's dark side is big indeed.
Watsuki's soul, his art, Rurouni is an individual who doesn't want to fight anymore but he is forced to do it. Guts is always willing to fight without even surrendering. Rurouni is tormented by HIS past evil deeds seeking someone or something reedems him. Guts is tormented by the evil deeds OTHERS inflicted on him in the past. Guts doesn't want anybody reedem or punish or save him (although he is saved by Skull Knight in the eclipse, by Griffith when fighting Zodd, by Zodd when fighting Boscon not to mention he was granted peace and joy thanks to his old and new companions). It's true, unfortunately you were wrongly shaped by Rurouni (believing you did bad things, believing you needed redemption). Maybe that kind of soul is perfect for some individuals but not for you. Fortunately you also were properly shaped by Guts (never surrendering, being independent but also needing some external support). Maybe you were or are tormented by your past but you didn't do anything bad to no one. No need no one redeems you. You and your soul are Guts and Miura. Not Rurouni and Watsuki. You are lawful-good. You are one of Schnoz's paladins after all. Be proud, never forget it and act accordingly. If you don't you will become a fallen paladin and lose all the powers Schnoz granted to you.
IF and only IF in the videos Watsuki watched no one was abused or forced to perform (I doubt it but I saw once an interview with a legal @@@ star in her 20' saying that day by day more and more people want to watch mid/early teens and even worse, day by day more and more mid/early teens want to become famous and rich super @@@ stars without truly knowing how that can impact their lives in the future) he would not have been evil. On the other side, if he broke Jappanesse law (leading to the evilness of making possible the existence of an entire unregulated business world with the potential of abusing individuals) but now that same law has set him free, that means he is lawful once again (we shall see in the future if he breaks or doesn't break the law again). So, who knows, maybe at long last he has been granted the redemption he longed so much. Everyone deserves a second chance after all. NOT more though. Better he has learned the lesson. I think Jappanesse law has been too soft with him. I think Jappanesse law is evil but that it's not only Watsuki's fault alone but the entire Jappanesse society. Unfair only punishing him for that. It's the entire Jappanesse society the one who has to reflect and change their laws democratically to ensure no one gets abused, everyone's freedom is respected. If they want. Freedom must prevail after all.

this all comes to the cultural aspect of how specifically in anime's its acceptable how they portray many anime female characters as child like, minors and the age gaps of protagonists that fall in love or even some genre like boy lolita. If you look at inu x boku ss secret service the main female lead is 15, has a fiance since she was like 9 the fiance now is like 20's and she falls in love also with her secret service agent that is in his 20's a'swell. It was all acceptable because they are demon-like creatures. there wasn't any outburst that a nine year old had a fiance, even if nothing sexually happened. How about Vampire knight where the main protagonist end up being siblings and there's incest in the manga, but again because they are vampires it doesn't apply to them. And don't get me started on hentai. Alot of these controversial issues are displayed in public and theres no outburst. While I agree he should face more serious consequences for his actions, its sad that the characters and anime are getting all the backlash.

Growing up in that late 90’s-00’s, I remember seeing Kenshin Hawaiian shirts all over the place(hell, when I went to a Catholic high school, we’d have this day once a month, where you could wear regular clothes, HOW MANY GUYS HAD THOSE SHIRTS?!?), and it was always a series I knew of, but never watched. Funny, the very week that the author was outed for…this, I had every intention to finally watch the classic show.
I guess this is one of those “separate the art from the artist” situations? As an artist myself, I’d definitely want to support the people who work on the new anime. And as for the old series, show my support staff who worked on it. It’s incredibly sad how a piece of of media can be tainted by the reputation of its creator.

I think that there’s so much context which makes him look not as bad. Japan as a society tends to be slow with change, so a lot of stuff is swept under the rug for “social harmony” so they don’t like to bring attention to bad things people have done for that purpose. There’s also the fact that creation of CP was outlawed in 1999, so most of the victims are already adults, which doesn’t make it right, but I think that it makes things more justifiable for themselves specifically. It’s very similar to Rurouni Kenshin, because the society changed so that things that were seen as okay, aren’t anymore. If he actually did something directly to a child, I would consider it pretty much irredeemable, and I think that public shame is way more of a punishment in Japan than it would be here, so I think that redemption should be something to consider. Someone like Roman Polanski is way worse, because he actively avoided his crimes, while Watsuki accepted his crimes. Whether he still should work for Shonen Jump is kinda tricky, because should someone loose their livelihood just for what they did wrong? Anyways, I just think that this is more of a systemic issue rather than a personal one, but that’s kinda where I stand. Legality =/= morality; however, it’s hard for me to put the blame on someone when he has the legal right to something, and he has a lot of other issues he needs to work out.

I for one never link 2 things that are not the same.
For example 1 thing is the personal life of a creator of an anime/game/manga...and other stuff.
In Rurouni Kenshin's case i feel like it was and still is a great anime with good character and story development, i love the story and the overall anime since i was young so i will never take points away from it just because something that the creator has done wrong or not. In my eyes he deserves credit for what he created in the anime/manga world and there's no reason to link that with the bad choices made in life.
In short i would say that i respect the vision, work and final product of his job. Not his personal life.
And since this topic is on the internet lets be real in some countries that heave no restrictions for websites you can find a lot of videos like that and there's still countries that does not care about this topic. Its horrible that kids or young boys or girls are made to suffer but sadly to say in this world there are a lot of unfair stuff and we all know that. Corruption and bribery rules a big % of the world sadly.
We the older generation lets say 25/28+ years old heave grown up learning what's right and wrong and the world was not like it is today but the newest generation at 14years they heave 1 boyfriend/girlfriend and i dare say 80% of the perents will not go with the boy/girl to the doctor like every other day and check to see if they did something or not...And other cases like when parents are going to another country to make money to feed the younger ones and they are left with a grandmother or someone alse from the family are ignored and they end up on the wrong road in life.

In all seriousness though, I don’t think saying “separate the art from the artist” is a genuine way to look at criticism. Its about accepting that regardless of if someones immoral views/behaviors “taint” any other positive messages they tell through their story, that they still deserve to be heard.
The bottom line is, do you think someone who did this, deserves to have their thoughts and feelings heard? I think so, because of:
    1. Redemption. Just as they are judged for what they did wrong, they should also be judged for what they did right. Everyone deserves to demonstrate they are capable of goodness.
    2. Who are we to assume anybody is too far gone? Who really are we to judge. Obviously this is a very messy subject and alot of of people think very strongly about this because its very serious. But what are we really saying by judging someone SO harshly, by saying they have absolutely no worth in any of their words? Seems hypocritical when you really look at your own life, and your own wretchedness.

I wasn't aware of this until today. I do think that the creator doing something bad doesn't mean you should hate things that they were involved with. I remember the J.K. Rowling controversy and how everyone watching Harry Potter in a reaction video started off by saying they don't agree with J.K. Rowling's stance, and I essentially told them that loving the story doesn't have anything to do with the maker or their views, so they shouldn't have to state that they don't agree with her before watching the movie. Same is true here. Watching Kenshin doesn't mean you are on the maker's side. It just means you love the story. Buying the manga isn't supporting this guy, it's supporting the story.
That said, I don't personally like that it's being remade. I think the last arc should be made and let the original story remain. I might be a bit bias in this case, though, as Rurouni Kenshin is my favorite anime.

To me this is a situation similar to the one involving Dan Schneider from Nickelodeon who made shows like iCarly, Victorious, and Drake & Josh just to name a few. While he wasn’t found to be in possession of CP I think the situation is worse for him cuz all of his shows were live action and the allegations against was that he had a foot fetish and would make his young actors especially the female ones do weird stuff that involved their feet and he was also known to have a short temper and one of his former actress Jennette McCurdy detailed in her memoir “I’m Glad My Mom Died” that a man called “The Creator” which is referring to Dan would try and do stuff like make her drink underage cuz she was around 17-18 at the time he did that cuz iCarly was wrapping up, now Jennette said that despite everything that happened she still wants people to enjoy his productions but she wants people to be mindful of the fact that not everything was sunshine and rainbows behind the scenes which I think this scenario applies to Kenshin cuz even though what he did was unforgivable we shouldn’t let our view of him affect how we view the anime remake and from what I’ve seen he seems to be living a normal life now cuz I think his collection was confiscated when it was found and he is still married to his wife and hopefully he is getting the help he needs to get over it if he hasn’t gotten over it already.

Thanks for your thoughts on this Ryan, this actually inspired me to make an analogy that I want to share and it's not meant to be controversial or absurd, on the contrary maybe it communicates how highly I think of works of arts and fiction. I feel that this situation is similar to how I left christianity.
Having grown in a very religious home it's undeniable that christianity had a huge impact within my imagination and ethical thinking, it was an both the rationale and the intuition behind many sincere convictions I had to become more generous and benevolent as I became an adult. But also as I grew up the many fissures on how my own thinking about the world and the logic within my religious group became large, I did not become an advocate of personal growth and responsability to forego those very things in order to stick to a specific practice. And at the same time I understand the christian logic well enough to understand that people who still believe and decide to incarnate those spiritual convictions are not idiots. They don't need to be fake, evil or insincere because their path within the faith led them to a different situation than mine. There is an stability and a sense of solidarity within a religious community and, when push comes to shove, there are very few things as important as those in this life. I can't fault them. I sure as hell don't want to follow that same path. Ignorance and acceptance are very important elements to gauge when you stare at these choices from an ethical standpoint.
Is short, I can see how separating the art from its creator is similar to separating the religious institution and the religious practice.

The core idea of an art piece (or scientific/technological discovery/wonder) is the soul of an individual. While they live you can't separate individuals from their souls. They are the same (though souls are eternal while individuals are not). Evil souls, evil individuals must be punished. Either while they live or after they die (or both if possible. it's when the greater justice is made). That's why after discovering Michael Jackson's crimes a lot of people (not all. some still believed in his innocence) threw his music to the trash bin. That's why after his death, after some of his accusers confessed they lied, a lot of people bought once again his music. Sadly we shall never know the truth (sadly too many economic interests involved). Now everyone can think and do what they want with Mike's art, with Mike's soul.
Kevin Spacy is a Chaotic-Evil individual (abuser who has broken the law) and must be punished but as far as I know (maybe I'm wrong) Seven was not his idea (soul). He just took part in it as an actor. That movie must not be punished unless the main plot (soul) of the movie was his creation.
Jk Rowling maybe is or maybe isn't wrong about some of the things she says but as as far as I know (maybe I'm outdated though) she hasn't abused no one (she is Good) and she hasn't broken any law (she is Lawful). If she has she must be punished within the frame of law and also by our collective consciousness. If someone says or thinks wrong things only means that person must learn and stop being ignorant. By the way, I never read Harry Potter but when I saw in the first movie that the main character (Harry) was born with the mark of the "Chosen One" meaning he already got somekind of superpower just as somekind of birthright without him having to work for it plus he, just being a child, already inherited a fortune from his parents from the start it made me puke. One has to work hard as Guts to achieve something worthy in life (and even doing so success is never guaranteed). This is the wise lesson kids (and adults too) have to learn. I never liked Jk Rowling monarchical/blue blood style (soul) from the very beginning. Now, more than ever, I'm quite proud of it.
Steve Jobs smartphones core idea (soul) is one of the most amazing ever imagined. Everybody, everywhere constantly connected to others. We stopping being selfish indvidual beings limitted by our biology/physiology to become an entire collective sentient being able to be aware of what others think or feel at any moment at any time. Pure madness (in the good creative sense of the word) I tell you. If Steve body was still alive we should praise him every day. Being him death at least we should praise his wonderful soul. The phones are not the soul of anyone. They are just tools. They are just "bodies" of Steve's soul. The production of the phones ("bodies") it's another thing. If some individuals or companies abuse someone and/or break some laws to produce them they and their soul are evil and/or chaotic and must be punished.
If some day, to print and distribute Miura's Berserk books someone is abused or some law is broken it will not be Miura's fault. His soul will be untouched, his soul will be saved. Regarding this matter he and his soul only would be chaotic-evil if he was still alive and aware that to produce and distribute his work some law is being broken or someone is being abused. If to produce the things we consume people are abused or laws are broken and we are aware of it we all are Chaotic-Evil and sooner or later Justice will be done (production will stop or all the people who live being abused will come near our homes spreading chaos or our own irresponsible selfish, uncaring, easy, frenzy consumerism will destroy the entire ecosystem along with all of us because we ourselves are just a part of it or what I think it's best, a fairer lawful-good producing system will be made).

I don’t think most people would claim that people shouldn’t experience media whose proceeds are actively harming people. I think they would say that you should not obtain that media in a way that contributes to those proceeds. You can always pirate things in private. According to that view there is not anything wrong with pirating Kenshin, pirating Hogwarts Legacy, or buying an Elvis album, since none of these things is especially harmful, compared to other ways you could spend your money as a consumer. Cell phones to some extent may be ok because it might not be feasible to get an ethically manufactured cell phone, and you may need one to function in contemporary society.

The sexualization of children as a whole is actually quite prominent in ancient japanese history. Any historian will tell you it was pretty common for Samurai and Daimyo's to have sexual relations with their disciples who were normally early to mid teens. They also posessed female slaves and servants who were children that they would sleep with.

I mean, this is FAR from just a Japanese thing. Ancient, medieval, and modern societies all over the world engage in practices like this. Just off the top of my head:
-the Apaches abducting girls from other tribes and white settlements as sex slaves
-modern Africans who believe having sex with a virgin makes you immune to all disease (which tragically leads to literal babies getting gangraped to death)
-pederasty in Ancient Greece, perhaps the most well-known example of pederasty amongst historians
-bacha bazi in Afghanistan, where little boys are dressed up as girls and made to dance and have sex with the men in the village. One of the few good things about the Taliban is their banning of the practice. US veterans describe having to work alongside Afghan police, soldiers, and warlords who all partook in bacha bazi. PTSD ahoy!
-Germany and Japan's WW2 era sex slave systems. Germany ran several "brothels" where young abducted girls were taken to be gangraped and tortured by German troops. The Japanese had a similar (and more widespread/infamous system) known as "comfort women". Russians, Mongols, Chinese, Koreans, Filipinas, Indians, Burmese, Laotians, Thais, Vietnamese, Cambodians, Malaysians, Indonesians, Papuans, Australians, etc. Any young girls the Japanese could get their hands on would be gangraped and mutilated for the soldiers' pleasure/amusement. There're photos of little girls being lined up and selected for "duty" by the Japanese...
-the Etoro and Sambia tribes in Papua. They believe that semen = male essence. If a boy does not consume copious amounts of semen, he cannot become a man. There're rituals were the men gather around the boys and the boys perform fellatio on the men, consuming every drop of semen in order to become a man...
Etc. It's not just Japan, it's a human thing. Every culture seems to sexualize children in their own way...

Terrible people create great things, and Great people create terrible things, that's just the way the world works.
I know this will sound a little ridiculous, but if his own creation manifested and was sentient, it would be directly apposed to Watsuki's horrible actions.

It brings an interesting debate up, him watching that was terrible, but he’s still made a great work to many. My bigger problem is with the society that had allowed it for so long, it makes me less mad at him than the environment that made him see that as okay, because I remember the problem being that he didn’t get rid of the porn he owned beforehand was declared as illegal. It shouldn’t have been legal for a long time before but that gets into much larger debates on differing morallity of the times especially the age he preferred last my memory serves was even more gross.

It's sad that this is brought up everytime someone talks about rurouni kenshin but I guess it's fair to be honest with newcomers. Luckily, I've never experienced that the creator of one of my favorite stories turned out to be a criminal (I like kenshin, it's just that I prefer many other things a lot more).

Personally I can never enjoy this series anymore precisely because the author had so much care and sensitivity for his work, it made me immerse myself to the story and the era and Kenshin was such a great protagonist with a positive message about redemption and healing oneself and finding forgiveness and retribution for his past acts especially in japan of that era in which japanese found it to be way easier and honorable to commit suicide rather recognise the error of their ways.
Anyway I can't believe that an author who had such good messages in his story chose to do something so vile in his real life so the reason I can't look at the series anymore or support it is because I have too much respect for kenshin as a character and I want to leave him untouched in my past memories rather than making him connected with pedophilia

For me it's tough to say. Full disclosure: I'm not that attached to RK. But when I ask myself: Are there things in this world worth boycotting? I think that answer is yes. And in the case of RK the author has been caught involved with the cousin of one of the worst things I could attribute to a person. Yet inside I still don't feel like this is enough to keep me from the story they've created. Is this because an anime has more than one person, THE person, working on it? What, then, about the manga, being directly created by said person? Does it come down to, then, my direct (personal) relationship with the author? Like, if I knew them in my day-to-day would that be a better reason to not support them? Should that even make a difference? Am I making excuses? If I don't boycott over CP of all things is there ever going to be something that I do boycott? If I followed RK/the author more closely would my answer be different? Am I a bad person if I don't?
Honestly I'm left in a tail-spin and I'm not sure your video helped me sort these feelings out. Yeah I use a smartphone so in some regard I'm enabling the practices that create them, but at least I'm completely ignorant of them. In this case the author is the main person of said creation that I can directly point to wrongdoing. Would it be different (yes I'm sure it would) if the author was instead just an animator/assistant to the work?
At the end of the day I feel that all I can say is bad people have the capacity to make morally good works of art/media.
I think I *should* boycott this but I don't know what it says about me if I don't.
