I got a Lenovo yoga 920, just before I got my acceptance to school. It served my greatly and will continue to do so. Just recently made a really good PC, but will go back to using my laptop once in-person studios begin.
Just wanted to put this out there to let people know that you don't need a gaming or a high end laptop. Any laptop with a good processor will do.

Nowadays no cpu is slower, And GPU is the most important part, every thing comes along. Most cases uses single core clock speed for a best Vport performance.

CPU was the most important, but nowdays, GPU requirements are probably as important if not even more important. Lots of software require more and more GPU power than CPU so i recommend to talk with some one who is really knowledgeable about this.

Why are you not mentioning mobile workstations from Dell, Lenovo or HP which would be the best choice by far if you are using CAD programs. The laptops you mention are more gaming laptops than CAD laptops in my book...

@@Nishiemoon Enscape doesnt run native on mac, you need to install x64 windows (bootcamp) if you want Enscape, and that's not possible on M1
The alternative is parallels, but I've never used it before so I can't say too much there.

Very informative !! I’m an architect student searching for my first laptop,, is the HP omen 15,, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD of storage, with a AMD RYZEN 7 processor an alternative that will last me long? The laptops are very expensive so I want one that will last me a couple of years at least

I currently have an HP ENVY with an AMD RYZEN 5 processors and to be honest it has been decent it handles most software's competently but it did struggle with Lumion it was also not bulcky so I could easily use it on the move

depends if you can upgrade the ram and the storage. Also if there's no dedicated GPU you're kinda screwed for doing rendering.

Pretty inaccurate telling people not to go for the M1 chip on apple since it's super powerful and can compete with the highest tiers of GPU/CPUs. There are workarounds for rhino and other software that enables you to run it on the M1 and surely soon it will be compatible without workarounds. I have always hated apple products but the new M1 lines are really affordable, the new iMac included (which is a beast by the way, both performance and visual). After so many years using non-mac I'm tired of the unreliability of the other brands and the quick aging of their technology. Also gaming laptops give a look that every self-respectable architect should avoid while apple products are clean and minimalistic. Not to mention the great screens they have.
Imo the only non-apple brand that is good is Dell.

I have to partially disagree with some of things you've mentioned.
M1 is powerful on the CPU side, but to say the GPU is comparable to the highest tier is a joke.
Workarounds do exists, and that is Rosetta, but the AEC industry is one of x64, trying to emulate x64 on ARM is not easy. And seeing that the ARM users in the AEC community is considered minority, not all ISV can afford developing an ARM version of their product.
Revit for example does not work on M1 and there's no workaround, that's a huge deal breaker for a lot of people.
Pricing wise, the basic air is affordable, but at 256GB, you'll need some kind of external storage if you're working on multiple projects. At 512GB, it's 12K, and that's not exactly affordable, not to mention $300 for 256GB is a rip off.
Also, 8GB ram is abysmal, on MacOS it's probably fine, but when you need to use VM in order to use non-supported software, 8GB is just not useable.
And in terms of appearance, yes majority of the gaming laptops are designed as without any professionalism in mind, that I agree, but we are seeing more low key gaming laptops in recent years.
So while you do raise valid points, you seem to be biased.

Why buy a MacBook and struggle to find compatibility solutions when you can just purchase a Razer laptop that packs a bigger punch while looking just as sexy as a Mac?

    • @killerofprimes
      @killerofprimes 3 года назад +2

And Dell has notoriously horrible QC control on their XPS lineup compared to other brands. Their customer service is even worse. This is where Apple has everyone beat.
PSA If you're buying a Dell, please buy from Amazon or Microsoft Store, so that you could get a replacement easily in case of a faulty unit.
