Oh, Mari. I'm so sorry to hear that the rat problem has returned. I can feel your frustration. You are an amazing gardener and I know you will get through this. Thanks for being so genuine and sharing your garden experience with us. I so appreciate you!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏽🧡
Hi how are you doing . I put Irish spring soap that I shave with a peeler in small tule wrap it up with string and throw about 5 in around your garden try it😊
The rats get attracted to it?
That sounds sooo complicated ! I simply put my egg shells back in the carton. When all eggs are gone crumple up the shells and put them around the stem of my tomato plants. No washing no powdering. Just like mulch. Ive not had any blossom end rat, slugs or for that matter rats. They say the sharp edges of the shells are avoided by pests and pesky critters. The shells just compost in place. Now I also put them around other plants with no adverse affects at all.
I tried doing that in my garden in the past and it didn’t really work. I still had slugs and my tomatoes got blossom and rot. Even though it sounds a little complicated, I’m excited to try it :)
@@MarisGardenandKitchen Same for me. The slugs here dont care about sharp edge eggshells :(

Maybe ts ust different areas and what they have for choice? Ive done it in 4 different gardens in different arts f my town but Im sure there is much more greenery to vhose from here than in poulated concrete NYC I am nterested to see your results just its not necessary gor all but for some it maybe.
That's unfortunate about the rats. When the sun begins to go down, I do see them try to scurry into the community garden too. An idea I had and will discuss with the community garden members was to set up a "Guardian Plant" like Stinging Nettle around the border to see if that discourages them from coming into the property. If you ever touched stinging nettle, it lives up to its name and maybe enough to deter rats.
That’s a good idea!!! Let me know if it works 😊
I have stinging nettles in my garden. I use it for tea and one day I want to make a tea from it.Its to help the soil. And when they sting you it HURTS!!
Yup, it is a wonderful tea; full of nutrients and cleansing. When my joints are inflamed, I welcome the sting. But when I am feeling fine, as you said, it hurts, which is why I think making it a border will probably deter the rats.
@lawrenberghanson4401 Wow! I need to learn to welcome the stings also.😅🤣 I'm learning to use anything herbal for inflammation. 😊
Sorry to hear. It is sickening that NY hasn't done anything about the rat problem?
Well, I went to the park today and they have “treated” a bunch of spots for burrows. The rat issue is a big problem here, last year they employed a “Rat Czar”, to deal with the rat problem in the city and I don’t know how effective that was
So Excited about Chris' Garden!!!!
🥰🥰🥰
I am so sorry to hear about your rat problem. I remember what you went through last year. Thank God I only have to deal with bunnies. T posts and chicken wire solves that problem.
Thank you! Yes, rats are no fun. I really can’t wait until I can move out and not have to deal with them anymore
I always add eggshells to my garden, but not for calcium. My soil tests say I am off the charts in calcium, so I add the shells to improve the clay soil and it works great! Glad you are finding a use for them. Really sorry about the rats. I have a garden in suburbia South Dakota, and sometimes get voles. Lots of snakes around here to eat them too.
Oh, I loved learning about that! Thank you so much for sharing. That’s a great idea and way to use it 😊😊 I’m sorry to hear about the voles, but glad to hear about the snakes! It’s so great to have a more balanced ecosystem :)
Sorry to hear about the rats. I know the feeling and frustration of dealing with them. I haven’t seen the ones that were nesting underneath my deck in a while, but I wonder if they come out at night. My dog has been sniffing around, so makes me think maybe they are still around. I”ll have to put out a camera in the garden, just to see what is actually lurking back there. Hopefully the stray cat that’s been enjoying my garden is keeping them out. 🤷🏻♀️
I hope so too! 🙏🏽 The stray cats here in my backyard do a great job with keeping the rats out, but at the plot there are no predators! 😣 Now I’m wondering if I have been attracting them with all the organic fertilizer and bone meal that I used… Or if it’s just you know, the usual NY stuff with all of the trash bags in the street etc. So frustrating! I wish none of us had to deal with them 😢
Such a good idea with the eggshells and vinegar! I think I’ll try too. Thanks for the inspo!
You’re very welcome! 🥰 I’ll let you know how it goes!
so sorry to hear about the rats, we had a real bad problem last year, i live in Harlem and we have a lot of restaurants and i think that also created a major problem. I haven’t seen anything in my backyard but i’m always on the look out.
I’m sorry to hear that, hopefully you won’t have to deal with them again this year 🙏🏽 Wishing that they stay out of your garden 🫶🏽💚 Dealing with rats is not fun!
I’m soooo sorry to hear about this. You’ve worked so hard and now to have to deal with this is unfortunate. I hope you can find a solution.
Thank you! I’ll have to do a big clean up there this week
So sorry to hear about those rats! We need to figure something out in NY, it is insane that the city doesn't do anything about it that is really useful. The way we take care of our trash is not the best and just poison is bad for everyone.
Yeah, all the garbage here is really a problem and I went to the park this morning and saw a lot of signs for “burrow treatment” and pesticide applications in the trees. To keep kids and pets out of the area. It’s just so sad! 😣 I wonder how the rat birth control experiment is working
I hope the hydrangea's cuttings work. I have loved them since I was a kid, my friend's grandma would get so mad every time she caught us playing with our toys in them, like it was a huge forest! What do you call them in Portuguese? In Spanish they're Hortensia, but in Canarias we call them also Flor de Mundo.
We call it Hortencias too, but they don’t grow well in my region since it’s soooo hot in the Northeast. I know they do better in the South of Brazil because the weather is a little cooler there, so I didn’t grow up with a lot of them around
Ok. Breathe. I know you will conquer the rats in the end. If you do, perhaps I can take inspiration and knowledge from you to conquer our voles here in NC. We have their tunnels everywhere. We used to have a cat colony nearby that kept them in check, but no more.
We live in central nc and the moles have become insane!!
@@mlee7037 I'm in central, too. We need more cats!
Sinto muito por você ter que lidar com isso novamente este ano.😊
Thank you!! I’ll make sure to keep everyone posted
I’m sorry to hear about the rats 😢
😔
I wonder if there is a way to attact stray cats? Or if there is a way you can get a "barn cat" that is actually a NYC garden plot cat lol. I'm sorry, it's so frustrating that you are having to deal with this!
I wish I could! I have alley cats in my backyard and they definitely help keeping the rats away. The plot is gated so the cats can’t get there
Can you propagate roses in water? Sorry about the rat issue. It’s got to be unnerving. 💜🙏🏽
Actually I’m just holding them in the until I decide what to do with them! My dad says he always propagated in water with great success, but most of the advice I’m seeing online is to do it in potting soil with rooting hormone and a dome over it to keep in the humidity. So I need to buy some rooting hormone to try that
❤
💚💚💚
Didn't you use blood meal fertilizer? I think some of the organic fertilizers and compost attracts rodents.
I actually used bone meal! And a multi purpose organic fertilizer too. Maybe that’s what they are getting attracted to. That’s a great point!!
@MarisGardenandKitchen it's true. I heard the same about Bone/Blood meal. My dog use to dig into my potted plants because of the smell.
Sounds like even if cats were there. The rats are bigger than the ra❤t's. Hope for a solution for you.❤
Omg I would love to show my container garden here in Staten Island🤭
