Most clichéd comment. It consists of pixels, and just because "pixel art" is supposedly a thing, it wants one to call it "pixel art". But the composition of the pixels is just serviceable in fulfilling a style and is a small part in how the atmosphere is created.
Not really. The sprites are extremely small thus requiring less work, many tiles are cluttered, over dithered and sloppy looking, doesn't demonstrate a lot of knowledge or experience in pixel art techniques and in general is just messy looking. It's just generic serviceable pixel art like a lot of indie devs use. They cheat by completely smothering it in bloom and other modern effects which defeats the purpose of pixel art. blowing it up to resolutions it was not meant for and hiding the blandness and unpolished nature of the pixel art with assloads of effects is what makes you perceive it as good. It's not close to games made by real pixel artists like Iconoclasts or Owlboy.
@@cleanchimera3870 You can actually push the cat off the ledge to save it, although you will initially upset it. This game is a testament to what I have always been telling people about horror in any audio-visual medium: If you really want to do horror well, the first thing you want to nail down is sound design.
Goodness, I love this game's animation and attention to detail! The little girl using the grate to get up after falling out of the vent or how the flip-face monster leaped around and clung to walls. It's eye candy
Not so hidden anymore it seems, youtube algorithm brought me here, and I think that I'm not the only one. I mean it's too well made, this game will be popular for sure.
The atmosphere is so calm, yet unsettling. Reminds of me of Hollow Knight, the feel of loneliness is similar, here even more due to lesser amount of enemies (which is fine for me - I prefer embracing the story and world instead of fighting). The music and sounds really captived my imagination, would love to play it with headphones in.
You see that the game is made with love when the pixel art and the animation are just perfect. Like, real, every action in game have a unique animation
I don't know why, but when a horror game includes rain, I feel a little bit less scared. Maybe it is because I find rain relaxing (unless it is a thunder storm)
The visual effects are what makes this game great. Reminds me of the last night, which takes it one step further by having pixel art objects rendered as 3d objects, with physics applied.
The color suddenly changing on that chase sequence making things extra intense. A yank from that blue calm atmosphere. That sword guy changing the gameplay from flight to fight. I’m invested.
I love how you can see how the last character is used to all of this! Especially compared to the other, who was struggling being chased. Anyway, this game looks really interesting.
Wow, the tiny animations of the environment and character along with the impeccable sound design make this game shine to a polish. It kept me so engaged somehow (granted, I love pixelart games).
This game is a gold mine imo. The art, the music, the voice over, the gameplay, the way it draws you to it's story, the way it peaks your curiosity and interest to play more - I'm swooned. I'll buy this for sure!
I don't often get to hear Cassandra Lee Morris acting in a softer, more somber voice. It's a really nice change of pace. I'm super into this game. It's beautiful and the sound design is fantastic.
Damn this pixel art game has some really smooth and nice animations, good job devs Too bad the knight scene was too short And too bad we dint get to give the well girl her key
Absolutely amazing. Def have to check it out, that gameplay looked pretty gold at the end. One critique, though, in case the creator reads this. The game is very atmospheric, especially in the first half. There are tons of lovely little touches and flourishes, such as the ballista hitting the wrong thing and hurt states. As such, when things behave according to more videogamey rules, they stand out unattractively. Namely, the black goo burst against the wall had it’s blood disappear, the first ballista bolt disappears instead of staying lodged in the gate goo, some items (like arrows) look natural and built into the environment, whereas others (key, pickaxe) are floating like Minecraft items (either is fine, the more atmospheric enviornment one or the gamey floating one for more visual indication, just consistency is key). Second, be wary of things like the knocking boy down thing. It seems to happen just if you pass him. Unless it’s played for humor or some forced dramatic metaphor on how progressing is bad OR some type of clue that the hero is actually a jerk despite player actions, it comes across as somewhat cheap. It’s a limitation of a 2D viewing on what is implicitly a 3D world and breaks suspension of disbelief a bit, as a player actually there could get around the child without hurting it, thus the player blames the game for railroading or the world becomes unbelievable.
This is not a a mechanic This is just a scripted event If it was a mechanic then you would need to use to progress You pushed the girl because the game wanted you to Not because you needed to
@@Joey099 yeah the impact of those moments is always lost when the game requires it to progress. the game forcing you to do something, then chiding you for doing what it made you do, feels like it's punishing you for playing and at that point it's just condescending refund time. you having the option to easily jump over the girl but choosing not to because it's faster/easier to knock her down/you didn't think to try is better, although the game would have to telegraph that you have that choice in the first place somehow.
Very solid. I'd buy it. The atmosphere and ambiance is stellar. My one critique is on how crisp the environments are but how blurry-looking the character is. On the opening scene I saw walls, tables, shelves, and a bed --- all easily identifiable, and then there was this blobby mass of something in the bed. I couldn't tell it was humanoid until she stood up.
Instantly relatable. I mean who hasn't got up, looked at their bedroom door and thought "no... today is the day I trash my room and slither into that grotty vent up on the wall" Ahhh memories
The plot reminds me of the way Dark Souls tells you its story: blurry explanations, sublime themes, as if I were at a cultist's sermon, a half-dead world and the omnipresent suffering. The gameplay is mostly puzzle and exploring, not sure where the horror is, except for that chase scene, but it quickly loses its "terrifying touch" after you realise that you'll just safely respawn after that black thing with a mask gets you. The animation and sounds are great, I wonder what are those little light thingies that you kept collecting throughout the game? Collectibles? Health items?
wow, the gameplay for the pickaxe guy and the thief are so different and are so complimented by the story and atmosphere. some textbook gamedesighn here.
That looks really cool And the way the story is narrated its pretty immersive and for the most part well done But in my humble opinion i think it lacks the trasition of the music to be more smooth and subtle (can remember the terminology for that sadly)
