Dev: "Okay so we have a creepy enemy with spooky background music. What should we name hi-" Other dev: "Greg." Dev: "Uh... Okay, what noise should he mak-" Other dev: "Eating chips with his mouth open."
can we talk about how good the game design is? it is showing you what the enemy does without text, the placement of the pellets makes sense, and the aesthetic is really appropriate without it looking cliche.
Okay, this looks very good. I love how they coupled the tried and true Pac-Man formula with an acceleration mechanic, a greater variety of enemies and maps, and an explorable overworld full of extra levels to find. Probably never gonna have more than niche appeal, but it certainly appealed to me.
So Ghost: Can charge at you and turn once per each charge. Otherwise, wanders very slowly. No idea what the AI behind it is. Can it break boxes? Electron: Shoots bolts in 4 directions periodically and wanders very slowly. If you get close to it, it charges up an AoE attack that can break boxes. Worm: Follows walls as best it can, moving slowly. Arrow: Constantly moving. Stops, flips, and continues if it hits a wall. *_G r e g_* : Ignores the environment, chasing you directly, but has a hard time turning around. Thwomps: Can charge at you if it "sees" you. Can't stop until it hits a wall. "Sees" you much earlier than you'd expect. Breaks boxes.
I didn't think you got this one but certain enemies still target you when you are trying to warp, although target is a weird way to put it. Even if your in the line of sight of a Thwomp when going in, they dont target you. But Ghosts will still "see" you and go for a charge, persay. Also, I think the Worms take the most closest corner to you, like right around the corner. Or atleast take the most convenient when closest.
Greg doesn't seem to directly chase the player, it seems to either have some kind of prediction or accelerate in random directions, as you can see it sometimes stop dead or try to cut off the player
@@pittagiiya I originally thought it was but the way Greg changes direction immediately after moving a different way makes me think it's trying to compensate for movement.
ikr. He didn’t lock on to you perfectly, he curved around you like you had a gravitational pull, which makes the stop ability useful when dealing with him
Greg's creepy... I seriously thought it would chase you down in the "level selection" after Greg's revenge or Late arrival. Wasn't even here at Escape? Feels like there's a second "ending".
Greg is the kind of thing were you think you see somthing out of the corner of your eye and it turns out to actually be a terrorfiying blue monster aggressively chewing on the bones of anthropomorphic white chopstick drug addicts
I feel like the ending paired with the title of the game being "Eat-Girl" leaves me with the impression that she dies at the end. At the end you're given the option to eat the dots or "pills" allowing you to speed by all those monsters (problems), different colors (perhaps stronger drugs) makes a louder sound when eaten, eventually you crash face first into a dead end, but given a seemingly different exit as the game rolls the credits.
If anyone's curious, there are a number of additional levels after the normal ending. You gain the power to break the gray boxes in the hub world and within certain levels, and they always lead to a new maze to clear
but TAS isn't just speedruns done by bots, there's actual humans involved, the bots are just there to brute force a certain task to find the fastest way to do something slow
I feel like story wise, based on the titles, Greg could be Eat Girl's drug dealer or abusive boyfriend who has caused her to lose weight due to stress/drug addiction/malnutrition/etc. Greg's behavior is based on the idea that he and his abuse will "eat her alive".
"so, you know the classic Pac-Man?" "Yeah, what?" "Let's remake it with a new spin" "Cool" "With Earthbound creepy soundtracks and style" "Oh. wait wha-"
I'm curious if anyone else picked this up too or if im going insane, but are the stage names actually bits and pieces of a narative of someone's life? There are titles like "Lonely" and "Pen pals" and "assembly line" that make me think of a girl doing a normal hard day's work and she has no one to confide to except for the so called pen pal. Then we have "Greg", "Greg's revenge" and "The late arrival" that kinda lead my mind to imagine maybe this is the mysterious pen pal she would speak to and finally meet in person, and perhaps he takes advantage of her addiction or vices (whether it's eating when she's nervous, or popping pills as the video name suggests) somehow, and in her attempts to elude that abusive relationship he keeps coming back to prey on her. And then there are titles like "Freefall", "Face first" and "Escape" that make me imagine her life was going through a downward spiral for one reason or another (maybe due to her vices taking the best of her, Greg's constant interferance or influence on her life, implications of suicide, or just plainly how she's just going through a series of unfortunate events). In the end it may just really be a bunch of levels named a random assortment of names for the sake of theme, and i'm just connecting the dots where there are none. I'd happilly check the names of every stage but i'm too lazy to lol. If any of you are willing to wear a tinfoil hat and speculate with me, i'm happy to hear your opinions!

I've got this game and beat it, but there's one thing that I'm not sure about. There'll be spoilers in the rest of this comment, I guess. After beating the last level and its secret exit, a ghost popped up on the map. When I got near it, it floated over to the final level again and hovered over the entrance. I didn't notice it had gone to the level's entrance until I had eaten all the pellets at the very bottom of the map and went into the orange portal thing. I haven't gotten the ghost to show up again, and I don't know what it does. Has anyone else seen it?
