    14,721 cans of food. Assume ~250 calories/can, that represents 3,680,250 calories. That's enough for 1,840 human-days worth of nutrition (@ 2,000 calories/day). What an incredible accomplishment for the school - so proud of them!

    Tomorrow I volunteer at my church St. Germaine as a catechumen at fourteen years old, I will be handing out presents and food to those who can’t afford, I’m only 14 but the church has helped my world view so much, I can’t wait to be received this year. I’m also great full because although my parents are atheist they take me to events like these and church ofc. Glory to God, and may the people who cannot afford this stuff be blessed!

    Faith without the willingness to serve your fellow man and woman is not faith. It is just posturing. It is just moral grandstanding. Kudos to these students for living out their faith, and I applaud you, Father Casey, for highlighting their work, which would normally go unsung. Hopefully it will inspire more of us to do the same.

    I’ve been working with St. Vincent de Paul near Atlanta for about a year now. It’s not perfect but it’s given me so much joy. I know a young couple near me who’s created a family ministry - just them - taking in homeless folks, one at a time. It’s just inspiring to see young people GIVING of themselves. As I was unloading food from my car for one of our friends in need she gave the most amazing compliment. “This is how it’s supposed to work,” she said. Yes indeed! This IS how it’s supposed to work.

    Thank you, Father Casey. It's very inspiring to see these young people caring for others in their community. And, it was nice to see Bishop Parkes blessing all the food! He used to be a pastor in our Diocese of Orlando. Several years ago we had a food drive competition among the different departments in our organization. It turned out to be one of the biggest donations the local food pantry received that year. I volunteer at a local food bank and it's heartbreaking how many individuals and familes are in great need of food. You are a great example to your students.

    Organizations like FoodCommune in Atlanta collect and distribute surplus food that would otherwise be thrown out for being imperfect or close to its sell-by date. It's perfectly good food sold at the cost of collection/storage or even given away for free. Other communities could benefit from duplicating the model!

    The grocery store here will let us go to the back door. They will bring boxes of food. Like they are shipped on the skid.. That makes it easier to pick up and they can have the cost already totaled so it doesn't clog up the checkout lanes... Hasn't the store suggested this to you? Maybe you should suggest it to the manager see if they can do anything.

    Have you asked food banks what they need? We receive some food assistance from our church but things like canned soup are not as useful or healthy as beans. Chickpeas, flour, rice, dry pasta. We can make more meals with those things that canned soups and veggies.

    • @br.m
      @br.m 5 месяцев назад +1

      It's not bad to have soup sometimes. Especially if they have a busy day. Families with children, or single parents can get overwhelmed. It can be easier for a kid to open a can of soup. If they have kids it might even be nice to have some snacks for school lunches. So your advice for healthy food is good but diversity and convenience is nice too.
      Like you say it is best to talk to the food bank. Instead of asking what they need it might be worth seeing about donations. The food bank here has professional shoppers who go around to all the towns to every sale, clip all the coupons. They get to know the store managers and get discounts. They know what their clients like and they know all the restrictions Like some foods that they are not allowed to give away, or it has to be packaged certain ways.

    • @udabac
      @udabac 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@br.m Yes, I've started doing all monetary donations to food banks for just that reason- they know exactly what they need and they can take advantage of sales and leverage bulk buying. It was a challenge at first because it felt less personal, like just throwing money at a problem instead of participating in helping, but I believe making the help more effective is more important than "feeling more like I'm helping."

    I want to bounce an idea off you Father and others. I was praying this morning (Pentecost) for the Holy Spirit when the term "Fruity Catholics" came to mind. What this means is those who are dedicated to fostering he fruits of the Holy Spirit in their lives (see Gal 5; 22-23). I have seen tons of angry Catholic deploring the evils in the Church and World, and too many weepy Catholics deploring their multitude of sins. But I was raised to believe that Catholic faith is a thing of joy and a life of love. What if there were a Facebook group (I could not find one today) called Fruity Catholics (ok, or another name) that was POSITIVE, joyful and constructive. I wonder if anyone would join...

    In Grand Junction CO Holy Family School and Immaculate Heart of Mary parish collect for Thanksgiving Baskets. Classrooms will get bragging rights for the most cans and turkeys. The whole Parish joins in. We have a reverse collection, parishoniers pick a piece of paper listing one needed item. Money can also be donated anything needed. This year, we delivered 156 baskets. Each basket has enough food to make a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings, including a good-sized turkey, pies, and goodies. It will easily feed a family of 4 for two days or more. The leftover turkeys, parishable non-perishable goods, are taken to Catholic Outreach to assist with the everyday noon meal. The extra money is used to help people in need that come to the office during the year.

    I was reading writer's of the Scottish Enlightenment. Adam Smith saw capitalism and industrialization as a means to relieve the overcrowding and material poverty at the time. The idea was that this would free us from the misery and depravity that too often results from want and simultaneously free us up for higher pursuits, such as the worship of God or the pursuit of happiness. We have achieved great material prosperity. Capitalism worked. However, we can't seem to overcome the association between material poverty and moral destitution. We must stop acting as if poverty is the result and not the the cause of moral blight. Poverty is not a crime. We have enough. We need a better way to share the material wealth capitalism and industrialization have given us so that we can focus on intellectual, moral, social, and spiritual development. So we can focus on God, who has called us to care for one another, who are worth so much more than a sparrow.

Are you suggesting that a 75 year old go and work for McDonalds? Do you think McDonalds is going to hire them? There are many people, because of physical, mental, or social situations are unemployable. Simply telling people to "go out and get a job" is very un-Christian because it dismisses people without even encountering them.

      @@richardauten7179 Holy Scripture (GOD's Word) should always be the subject talked about and glorified.
      Peter's faith and confession of Christ (Who is the true Rock/Petros) makes a sinner like Peter (a stone/petras) the church along with other believers who are as living stones built up a spiritual house (the Church). Peter explained what Matthew 16:18 KJV means in 1 Peter 2:4-8 KJV which says that true believers are as living stones (Petras) built up a spiritual house (spiritual church built on the cornerstone Petros/Rock Who is Christ and a confession of Him as the Christ). By the way, Christ again said the same thing to all His disciples which also applies to every believer in Matthew 18:18 KJV concerning a believer's power of binding and loosing or retaining and remitting. Again, all true believers are kings and priests.
      Here is a practical example of that. As a real king and priest in the true church I myself have the authority to tell you that your sins are retained if you do NOT believe that Christ died one time shedding his real blood and giving His real body on a real cross for the forgiveness of all your sins, past, present, and future, and that as a true believer you now have eternal life and are sealed for Heaven. But, if you think you still have sin to be forgiven through sacramental works then again I inform you that your sins are retained. I cannot forgive sin only GOD can but I do have the authority of the Gospel to tell you the truth of GOD's Word just like Peter did.
