I totally agree with reducing plastic consumption but to send perfectly good items, such as bath toys and the vacuum, to waste rather than using it to the end of its lifespan is completely irresponsible action and not in-line with living a zero waste lifestyle. the one from K because it is toxic, when her kids put it in their mouth. I would not like to see my kids playing with plastic. I know it will be hard for the older child for a few days, because she will miss her toys, but she is still very young and won’t care for long and I am sure they will buy her new wooden toys she will enjoy as much as her old plastic toys :)

Although it sounds an extreme idea and hard to follow, I would fully support this life style without plastic. Plastic is one of the worst inventions in human history. When I was a child, in my hometown people used traditional container/tools/ from wood/bamboo/metal/paper/clothing/, etc... Even if there was some trash in the environment, it would be rotten/decayed soon. Nowdays, the plastic is everywhere and people don't collect the trash well. The plastic trash can last for millions years. Human being made this white pollution, made this crime to the nature and themselves.

Han Umaña the operational parts of the computer and electronic devices are the circuits, not the plastic, and they can be placed on any other material (rubber, sillicone, wood...). Also, if you did some research, you'd know that the plastic bottle will leak (contaminate) your liquid with the BPA and other cancer causing chemicals. Furthermore, it can only be recycled twice, and after that dumped within the environment where it decomposes and enters the water/food chain, and gets back into the human in the form of microplastics or microfibers for some more cancer.
Great to see this documentary on this subject. I recently got a part time job at a recycling centre and there is just mountains of plastic!! This family show how hard it is to get away from the stuff. I'm looking at reducing my use of it in relation to food and drink. That is at least a health issue as well as rubbish issue. I would like to buy 4 - 7 acres of land and become more self sufficient with a permaculture farm as an end goal of reducing my non-sustainable ways.
Well they are throwing away plastic they already have and toys and the vacuum. That wastes a ton. They haven’t done enough research to know that you don’t need to throw away a bunch of these things.
this is why action needs to be taken on the industry's end. it's not feasible or reasonable to expect people to have to go through all this just to avoid something they didn't need to begin with. if we simply required companies to do away with plastic wherever possible then we would reduce our plastic waste exorbitantly. it really irritates me that people act like even that is an inconvenience when the real inconvenience is that our oceans are filled with microplastics.

My father grew up just as plastic started getting popular. The straws used to be made of paper, apparently you had to drink very quickly towards the end because the straw started unravelling. Also toothbrushes used to be made of horse of pig hair, set in wood or bone. I bought a back brush made of wood and pig hairs, the plastic one is far superior, the brush is noticeably soft after 3 or 4 uses.

A city in the heart of Silicon Valley informed its residents that most clear, opaque and black plastic and plastic bags have never been recyclable and to stop putting it in the designated bin. Imagine thousands of families which rely on take out food, plastic even to sell berries now realizing most plastic is not even recycled!
the big problem is single use plastic, like straws and lids. how did we even get sold on those in restaurants? no one uses them at home, why do we feel compelled to in a restaurant? bottom line, if you don't need it, don't use it
There are ways to avoid the plastic wrap and packaging. Buy in bulk directly from wholesales and farmers, create a food co-op with like minded people in the community, begin canning and drying your own seasonal food and buy rice in huge bags from the Asian shops. But this has certainly inspired me on ways how to cut down and phase out plastic. I do know that our local Lidl store has a bin for unwanted packaging from produce bought there.

I use the same toothpaste with baking powder. You need to get used to it because it tastes pretty salty. But I actually like it now. I also put some stevia powder in it, which makes the taste much better and sweeter. But I completely understand the girls reaction to it 😬

You'll basically never manage to fix two problems: computing/electronic equipment and cars. They do not make plastic free options, and you cannot make them yourself. I ran into this pretty quick when trying to eliminate all plastic. Washing up/home care equipment is relatively easy to address.
I live in Australia and have been trying to live plastic free in a house with seven people. This wonderful mother is making life hard for herself. We can buy a soap bar for washing our hair an conditioner. And what is wrong with using a soap bar to wash yourself with. There are soaps here that are made and good for your skin. We are lucky to have a place in town where we buy fruit and veges without plastic wrapping. Harder to get other food though.

I do understand those comment that they throw good stuff away but they misunderstanding this family objective in getting rid of plastic because every plastic breakdown and they do not want those tiny plastic in their house as you know every kid lick the floor. That's what they learnt at that moment and be kind and understandable is not a difficult thing.

The reason they threw away the plastic they already owned instead of using them is because their aim wasn't a zero waste life, it was because according to them plastic is harmful to human health. Although, shouldn't they move into a place where nothing is made of plastice (furniture, ,floor, vehicles, etc.)
Admirable that they attempt this. I think the worst part is plastics that are literally designed to be disposed. I think a lot more people can do that. Then comes being aware of other things that are meant to last that are made out of plastic. Especially if they directly or indirectly come into contact with your mouth. So plates, bowls, toothbrush. And honestly you can go on and on and on and perhaps we should, but I think VERY few people are willing to throw away around their lives completely to live in harmony with nature. For most, starting with not using disposable plastics is probably a good idea.
Use reusable plastic containers until unusable then change to glass. Supermarket plastic wrapped foods and bags are one of the main problems. It's more about responsible recycling than throwing everything plastic away.

Some notes. Plates cups and bowls come ceramic. I'm sure back in the day people found a way with babies without plastic around their arse. You really don't need a hairdryer. Doing this is much easier if you own your own bit of land.
It is not that difficult to reduce the use of plastic. Just get quality natural materials or things you would only buy once. I.e. A metal straight razor that will last you a lifetime (and more) vs. disposable plastic razors.
Recently I got hemorrhage cyst that was pretty large it made it hurt to just walk. And I also got tumor in my breast, but thankfully it's benign. Somehow I'm suspecting plastis and soaps and cosmetics. Now I buy environmental friendly soaps and changed my utensils, plates, glasses and food containers with glass or stainless steel products. There's a lot articles about BPA free is not that safe.
The way I perceive it. Going to zero waste or saying No to plastic doesn't mean you throw away all the things you effortlessly bought and buy a totally new set of a good life items. Going zero waste is bound to limit and reduce your consumption, make you check (or ponder on) carbon footprint of things you buy or borrow instead of buying. All in all, this family bahaved strange, like if plastic was cursed, like if they were some preppers. Quote "I don't think the aim is to do completely without plastic" lol.
The bright plastic, pliable toys often contain lead. Lead helps to keep plastic supple. During this time of year, parents need to specify that their children are not allowed to have plastic. There is wood, cloth and metal. It's just easier said than done.
gloriakmm Rinse poop by holding nappy in loo and flush then leave to soak (I used vinegar in water in an enamel bucket). When the bucket’s full wash on ‘hot’. I found it easy enough 👍🌹🙏💖💫
gloriakmm I did this and found it quite easy. Rinse off any poo by holding the nappy in the toilet and flushing then soak it until you have enough for a wash. I used a lidded enamel bucket with vinegar and water in. Then a hot wash in the machine and that’s it! Also not true that cloth nappies need a plastic outer layer. I used wool with lanolin in it and it worked very well 👍🌹🙏💖💫
Is it harmful to even touch plastic? I couldn’t really understand why they had to completely rid their home of plastic. Aren’t we supposed to re-use things as much as possible? Very impressed by the effort and the home made cosmetics though.
It’s a bit harsh of the parents throwing away their kids toys. They should’ve kept the plastic toys until they’re grown out of it and gave them to a charity store. Also are they aware that there’s plastic containers that’s bpa free and use bars of soap, toothpaste tabs/powder, deodorant bars and shampoo bars.
Plastics as we see its use today began in the 1960's as its price came down and it quickly became the alternative to the age old use of metal containers cans along with glass bottles and paper based wrapping material. Plastics first made headways in the kitchen, made popular by products such as Tupperware. cheaper virtually indestructible in comparison to glass kitchenware. Plastics began to replace the use of metal as a cheaper yet stronger alternative. As such, it is possible to turn the clock back and reduce the production of plastic, but in doing so it immediately means driving up costs, more greenhouse gasses as the need for classic materials metals wood glass become of higher demand.
If they are afraid of plastic why did they put the homemade shower gel into a plastic bottle? I agree that reusing is better than throwing it away for environmental reasons but not if you are afraid of harmful chemicals. I guess you don’t eat from it so maybe that is why they are okay with it?
Probably for safety reasons other than avoiding chemicals. Glass would be extra slippery and hard to dispense from. I think a good replacement would have been maybe a glass jar. But the lid and jar would have to be made so that they can be used with wet hands. Engineers can create products that can be more useful with less plastic.

We avoid plastic as much as we can. It does bother me that our organic food is wrapped in plastic.

In the 30s and 40s we didn't have all this plastics.......I have been teaching my greatgrand kids what we used .

Rwanda dealt with this in 2010 . They banned plastic bags . There is life beyond plastic bags

Plastic really killing us slowly. We all need to stand with this family. Plastic is very serious issue for earth life and ocean life .Rwanda stop the plastic use check how clean the capital city Kigali be come a cleanest city in Africa. This family are awesome.

I would like to hear from a analytical chemist to validate her concerns about plastic leaching into products like toothpaste. Also, does germany have biodegradable plastics and recycling facilities which can manage the composting requirement? There are only a handful in the US.

I do understand those comment that they throw good stuff away but they misunderstanding this family objective in getting rid of plastic because every plastic breakdown and they do not want those tiny plastic in their house as you know every kid lick the floor. That's what they learnt at that moment and be kind and understandable is not a difficult thing.

You can def do cloth nappies without plastic just use wool covers called woollies
they better get rid of their car too, theres plastic in there, the tires are made of toxic rubber, and the car exhaust is toxic too.

The reason they threw away the plastic they already owned instead of using them is because their aim wasn't a zero waste life, it was because according to them plastic is harmful to human health. Although, shouldn't they move into a place where nothing is made of plastice (furniture, ,floor, vehicles, etc.)
I want to do this as well.
I felt a little bit sad for the kids giving up their plastic toys 😢 but they will still find fun in other ways

Admirable that they attempt this. I think the worst part is plastics that are literally designed to be disposed. I think a lot more people can do that. Then comes being aware of other things that are meant to last that are made out of plastic. Especially if they directly or indirectly come into contact with your mouth. So plates, bowls, toothbrush.
And honestly you can go on and on and on and perhaps we should, but I think VERY few people are willing to throw away around their lives completely to live in harmony with nature.
For most, starting with not using disposable plastics is probably a good idea.
Use reusable plastic containers until unusable then change to glass.
Supermarket plastic wrapped foods and bags are one of the main problems.
It's more about responsible recycling than throwing everything plastic away.

When I go to shopping and use cotton bag and my box.. People in the market looking at me... They used to put all their foods in plastic bag.... 😅😅 but then two years now... And I used now my living.

You really don't need a hairdryer.

It's disposable plastics that are the problem.
It is not that difficult to reduce the use of plastic. Just get quality natural materials or things you would only buy once. I.e. A metal straight razor that will last you a lifetime (and more) vs. disposable plastic razors.
one step at a time is got to get rid of plastic, first buy no new plastic.
Recently I got hemorrhage cyst that was pretty large it made it hurt to just walk. And I also got tumor in my breast, but thankfully it's benign. Somehow I'm suspecting plastis and soaps and cosmetics. Now I buy environmental friendly soaps and changed my utensils, plates, glasses and food containers with glass or stainless steel products. There's a lot articles about BPA free is not that safe.
Let's live without plastic.

The way I perceive it. Going to zero waste or saying No to plastic doesn't mean you throw away all the things you effortlessly bought and buy a totally new set of a good life items. Going zero waste is bound to limit and reduce your consumption, make you check (or ponder on) carbon footprint of things you buy or borrow instead of buying. All in all, this family bahaved strange, like if plastic was cursed, like if they were some preppers. Quote "I don't think the aim is to do completely without plastic" lol.

Plastic tastes bad to me. Plastic bottles taste like the denaturing agent in alcohol. Polyester makes me itch. Polyester bags are essentially plastic.
The bright plastic, pliable toys often contain lead. Lead helps to keep plastic supple. During this time of year, parents need to specify that their children are not allowed to have plastic. There is wood, cloth and metal. It's just easier said than done.

gloriakmm Rinse poop by holding nappy in loo and flush then leave to soak (I used vinegar in water in an enamel bucket). When the bucket’s full wash on ‘hot’. I found it easy enough 👍🌹🙏💖💫
gloriakmm I did this and found it quite easy. Rinse off any poo by holding the nappy in the toilet and flushing then soak it until you have enough for a wash. I used a lidded enamel bucket with vinegar and water in. Then a hot wash in the machine and that’s it! Also not true that cloth nappies need a plastic outer layer. I used wool with lanolin in it and it worked very well 👍🌹🙏💖💫

Is it harmful to even touch plastic? I couldn’t really understand why they had to completely rid their home of plastic. Aren’t we supposed to re-use things as much as possible? Very impressed by the effort and the home made cosmetics though.
It’s a bit harsh of the parents throwing away their kids toys. They should’ve kept the plastic toys until they’re grown out of it and gave them to a charity store. Also are they aware that there’s plastic containers that’s bpa free and use bars of soap, toothpaste tabs/powder, deodorant bars and shampoo bars.

Plastics as we see its use today began in the 1960's as its price came down and it quickly became the alternative to the age old use of metal containers cans along with glass bottles and paper based wrapping material. Plastics first made headways in the kitchen, made popular by products such as Tupperware. cheaper virtually indestructible in comparison to glass kitchenware. Plastics began to replace the use of metal as a cheaper yet stronger alternative. As such, it is possible to turn the clock back and reduce the production of plastic, but in doing so it immediately means driving up costs, more greenhouse gasses as the need for classic materials metals wood glass become of higher demand.
If they are afraid of plastic why did they put the homemade shower gel into a plastic bottle? I agree that reusing is better than throwing it away for environmental reasons but not if you are afraid of harmful chemicals. I guess you don’t eat from it so maybe that is why they are okay with it?
Probably for safety reasons other than avoiding chemicals. Glass would be extra slippery and hard to dispense from. I think a good replacement would have been maybe a glass jar. But the lid and jar would have to be made so that they can be used with wet hands. Engineers can create products that can be more useful with less plastic.
A Bangladeshi scientist has invented jute made polythene. You know that is septic and healthy for environment . That will be the optional of plastic..
