I built a DIY Mineshaft Infinity Mirror

- As "Big DIY Season" draws closer, I had one more opportunity to have some fun. Not that Big DIY isn't fun, this is just a non essential and non functional project. Just a bit of fun.
I had some space left over after moving out some old junk and re-organising the cave. Was going to build some more shelving (for more shit?) but decided to do something different.
Scouring the net for some inspiration, It became evident that these "infinity mirrors" are a thing people are doing. Mostly with LED light void effects etc. Cool and all, but all the same.
Then I see a picture from a guy called Wiz, he's made this infinity mirror downward shaft with a ladder which makes it look like it goes all the way down through his floor. See it here: • Infinity mirror minesh...
Now we are talking. This is cool.
So here is my take on it. A huge infinity mirror mine cart, rail and tunnel. Complete with custom lighting and an infinite tunnel under my house. All wood you see is scrap repurposed, glass was custom order using contact gained from shed window build.
Video wise, I changed the soundtrack half way through the edit as the original song didn't do it for me (Sorry Sugarhill Gang) But this semi-unofficial-uk national anthem stuck in my head while building the cart and it just became a thing.
I usually pick a song that I can listen about 50 times in a row without getting bored, because that's what you have to put up with while editing. This song kept me entertained without a hitch.
The video does miss a lot of the action as I left too much of the cart build in the early part of the video.
This couldn't be changed because I switched editing from MAC to PC half way through, so the first part of the edit was "fixed" and I just had to work with it.
For that reason you miss me opening up the actual underbelly of my house and crawling in there to wire up the lights and switches. eugh... You also missed me hand picking every stone out of the gravel I purchased, so I could separate them from the sand and lay them where I wanted them individually rather than in a big sandy mass of hardcore. Yep. About 300 of them.
In hindsight, I should have saved the song I used for the next video. By the end of the edit I had run out of song time and had to add the MUSE interlude at the end to wrap it up.
This worked quite well and although the video pace and song was a fun option and works well. I think the project actually deserved a more subtle/respectful tone. A bit like my rocket lamp video.
The time-lapse fun stuff works on heavy/"Big" DIY builds. But I might stick to slower paced editing for future "craft" projects like this. No one cares to see you put each feather edge fence panel up and what screw you used. Hence time-lapse. But there is a natural curiosity when creating something like this where some people want to know the small details of how you achieve "that".
Note taken. Time for captions again?
New skills: Understanding the underbelly of my house wiring and piping.
Working with privacy glass. Regulation wiring. Creativity levels were also maxing out on this one. I surprised myself when it all came together. Last thing, my new Dewalt Skillsaw wonderful tool which got this project done quicker than planned. Hail the 18V Cordless.
Mistakes: None really.. It went....too smoothly. Which is giving me anxiety.
Overall I love this gem. I ties up what I'm going to now call my "Wonderwall" in the cave.
I've had a lot of questions about the build. I hope some of them may have been answered here.
Not that anyone is reading down this far...this is just a productivity diary for Joel of the future. I'll look back on this waffle typed up at 2am and thing "huh..what a load a waffle".
Peace./ - Хобби
So ingenious and mesmerising to watch when complete at the end.
Great reveal, looks awesome.

It’s absolutely gorgeous!
thank you so much 🥲
Well done. That’s very impressive.
That’s absolutely amazing well done love these infinity mirrors but this is another level 👏🏻👏🏻
Cheers Dean! I tried to do something a bit different after seeing a few styles.
Cool idea and use of the principal.
I've been watching a bunch on DIY infinity mirrors, but this is the only one that made me say, "this should be liked and shared"
Thank you!
And please do :D
Agree
This is amazing! Way better than my table... might look a bit better with just the track in there
Built several 12 x 12 with the led strips that came out nice but I would love to do something like this. Absolutely amazing.

Awesome job well thought out
Thanks very much Alan. It took a lot of planning and the idea had been floating around my head for quite a while before I went for it. The space just looked like it should have been what I turned it into. So I did it haha

That is so cool!
Thank you very much sir
Thank you all for 100k views and counting! Please do check out my library of similar DIY videos. :)
Also: a lot of comments how I did it. At 3:20, that is a transparent mirror or "privacy film" bought on amazon. It created the illuision by enabling both mirrors to look at each, while allowing you to see right through on of the mirrors. If that makes sense...it then creates the infinity....
Please let me know if I can elaborate further.
Again. thank you all, glad you liked it, I try to respond to all comments but it's getting hard to keep up!
Amazing idea mate, ... it will be my next project for sure ... as I built a mirror clock, but this is the ants pants... Under my TV stand... WOW!

Cool!
It's cool, I did something similar in my workshop.
Awesome!
Thank you! Cool isn't it!
Brilliant, glad to see at second attempt you did the wood charring outside!! Bloody awful noise though.......
Thanks mate!
And yeh there was certainly a “what the hell am I doing?” Moment after that first scorching session, before I decided to finish up outside for obvious safety reasons..
And sorry you didn’t like the audio, “music is subjective for everyone” and all that…
This is an old tune I hadn’t heard in a while and sometimes when I hear a tune, I can see in my head how I could edit a video to it. And once that has happened, I’ll generally stick with that song.
But believe me, I was sick of hearing it too after I finished editing haha
I love it man! I've planning to do something like this, and was looking for videos, and ideas! this would be amazing! thanks! 👏💯
You're welcome! Glad you liked it and good luck with your project
@@MrJoelDavies Thanks a lot!
@@hashusx So. Did you build your own in the end?
Hi @@MrJoelDavies ! I couldn't find one side mirror. Hence, I've ordered mirror film from Amzn and stick it one side of a glass. Unfortunately, it didn't came out as beautiful as yours! 😅But, I'll find better materials and try again later on.

muy bonito
Hello.
very nice.
I don't understand, but you put a mirror in the beginning. at the end, did you put a mirror on the inside for reflection or not?
Awesome project! Is that mirror window tint you use?
3:35 😉👍
So is there a one-way mirror film on the backside of the front glass panel? In other words, what did you do to the front glass panel to make it insanity?
That’s correct yes, the mirror at the back of the hole sees another mirror. And when the light inside is turned on, we can see through that mirror, but the internal mirror at the back cannot. This creates the illusion :).
When the lights inside are not on, we also just see a mirror from the outside reflecting back at us.
Thus, insanity ensues.
underrated hope youtube recommend this to more people
and i have question what's the % of the glass tint are you using
Thanks !
So do I :D.
The tint isn't actually a tint. Just a one way "Privacy" mirror film on a sheet of normal glass.
The fact you can see through from the other side is because of the light inside the box.
So it's a normal mirror, with a fake mirror looking at the normal mirror, which we can see through.
I tried to pull up the Amazon link but the link is not working for some reason.
@@MrJoelDavies Hey great video bro, did u put the mirror film on both sides of the glass?
@@Rhin0Dot thanks man!
The mirror at the back is a normal mirror, then the regular glass panel on the front has a 1 way/privacy film on it, facing into the infinity box. So from the inside, the mirrors look at each other, but I can see through one of the mirrors, creating the infinity illusion. . If that makes sense?
Really cool but I think it would have looked better if the cart was full, would have made it look more like a train of carts
Thanks! And yeh the original plan was to fill each with “fools gold”.
But I kind of just..never did it.
Do you mind sharing what acrylic you bought. I bought one and it doesn’t seem to reflect as well as I would like. Seems to be the same amount of reflection and transparency both ways
I see you posted the product. I had done the silver I’ll try the black. I love the choice of Muse
@@kevendt72 sorry for the late reply, and yes a few people have asked about what I used so I’ve posted the links to some other replies as you have seen. Thanks for watching! And indeed Muse are the best :D
My favourite band.
Came out great. But I'd use dimmer lights.
thank you. a dimmer was a thought during the build, but the illusion needs a lot of light to be effective. So If they were dimmed down anymore it would start to kill the effect which is a shame, because it's bloody bright and power hungry haha
waw thanks for this
thanks! you're welcome :D
wonderful 👏 What is the depth measurement of the tunnel?
Thank you!
If i remember correctly, about 50cm deep
WOW
Could you tell me what film you used for the two way mirror?
It's silver auto tint over glass.
@@mr.gabriel382 I had to figure it out on my own I made one for my husband who loves mines it turned out awesome.
Amazing work! You said that you've posted links in one of your replies, but I can't find them. Can you please re-post?. Also, I'd love to see a video - even a photo - of the "updated" project including the fool's gold.
Sorry - I mean links to the products that you used in the build. Thanks.
Hi sir what type of glass used in front side...
It is one way mirror??
What is the thickness of front glass ..
Please guide me....sir
The mirror at the back is a normal mirror, then the regular glass panel on the front has a 1 way/privacy film on it which you can buy online (seen at 3:20). The mirrored side of the front glass panel faces into the infinity box. So from the inside, the mirrors look at each other, but I can see through one of the mirrors, creating the infinity illusion, but only once the lights inside are turned on. . If that makes sense?
Both glass pannels are about 7mm thick. This can vary for you depending on what kind of project you are doing. If it's a table, maybe thicker and/or shatter-proof for safety reasons. But because this is just a display which isn't touched, thinner can be used.
Awesomeness! Great job. I'm in the mountains of WV and may fill mine up with coal. I have to cover a window opening and the hole is 6'x4'6"...will that work? Or too big?
thank you very much!
Honestly, I don't see why not..
As long as you have enough light inside the "box" the illusion will work. It's all about selling the realism too, as long as you have the right repeating element, laid out in the right way, with enough light inside. It should work.
I would LOVE to see one on the scale you're thinking of. You would be one of the first to create such a thing that I know of and it would certainly a RUclips opportunity...
Good luck and keep me updated if you can.
@@MrJoelDavies I will definitely send you the finished product. May take me a minute, I think I will put Anthracite coal in the cart. Thanks again man
@@TheConner1612 Yep, take your time, plan it well and go for it! Good idea with the coal.
I ended up wrapping rocks in foil, which I then sprayed with Gold paint. You don't see that in the video though, I was too impatient and couldn't wait to get the video out haha.
@@MrJoelDavies I was thinking that very thing with the gold rocks brother! I was also thinking of putting a see-through piece of fiberglass at the top of my box for it and buying this thing named "perfect storm 2.0", that way I could add a little lightning effect like the cart is just entering the mine and maybe a little smoke machine! Brother, if it's not too much, what are the dimensions of your opening and cart? If it's a pain to send me I understand
@@TheConner1612 sorry, almost forgot to reply to this one, been busy getting ready to move house!
The lighting is a really cool idea, would be really interesting to see if that idea would work as the main light source, could be too Dim, but well worth trying for sure. Even if it's backed up by some other (optional) lighting source maybe.
Dimension wise, I've packed my project book with the original plans, but I can make a pretty good guess from memory.
W-160CM
H-60CM
Depth- ~80cm
Cart was about: 40x40cm and about 20cm deep (30cm High inc wheels etc)
Really cool, but wouldn't the coal fall through the slats on the cart??
Great job, dude. Looks amazing.
Thank you!
And yes...to be fair. In real life it probably wouldn't be much use haha. But I guess I wasn't too concerned about that when building it, as it's not actually mining anything and I wanted you to be able to see into the middle of the cart. Also makes it look old/rickety.
After I finished this, I wrapped fist sized beach pebbles in foil and spray painted them gold and filled the cart with those. Due to the slats, you can see it's piled with sizable chunks of "gold".
I've been meaning to upload a follow-up video of it with the gold in, but I don't think enough people would actually care to watch it and I'm about to move out of this house and leave the mine cart in place anyway (Buyers kid demanded it as part of the sale).
@@MrJoelDavies It looks fine the way it is, brother. I was just being a wise ass. I bet it looks even better with the "gold" in it. Really cool design.
@@jimmy2745 haha thank you :,)
And yeh, the gold properly "sells it" now. Had to be careful in how I put it in there though, any obvious repetition of stone placement can ruin the effect.
I still don't understand how you did this
Magic 🪄
Was the slight downward curve planned or a happy accident?
it was indeed a happy accident :D.
I'm still not totally sure what caused it to be honest..
@@MrJoelDavies the distance between the two mirrors is off. Slightly closer on the bottom. Like a 1/16" I would guess.
But it really looks great in this case.
@@OscarSommerbo ah that makes sense!
The back wall of the box it is built in to probably wasn't ever that level and when I put the mirror in, i set it flush against that back panel. Leading to a very happy accident. Cheers for clearing that mystery up :D
@@MrJoelDavies The two mirrors aren't perfectly parallel.
How did you achieve the cured effect?
Can you elaborate?
Not sure what you mean exactly by “cured”
and dear viewers take in mind that you are watching this on a screen. So in 2d. When you are actually there, it looks even better. :)
It does indeed!
People still struggle to make sense of it when they see it in person
You should make a kit of this mineshaft and sell it.
A one off I’m afraid :D
For now anyway
you can make a train and have the front of the train sticking out
That’s a fantastic idea!
But I do think it might alter the illusion due to how the concept works, the rear end of the train would also most likely repeat in an odd way down the tunnel.
But I’m tempted to try that if I find some space to do it in
Great project but where’s the air rifle gone?
Mounted on the wall in my workshop :D

Awesome shuld of put ruby's and gold nuggets and diamonds in the cart
haha cheers, I know. I originally intended to fill the cart with "Fools Gold"/Rocks wrapped in foil and sprayed gold.
But as I was finishing the video, my impatience got the better of me and I just went ahead and released it before I remembered to fill them with the gold...
To the people who see it in person these days, they now see the gold. And it does look good with the light reflecting off the foil.

you need some rocks in the carriage
i know haha a few people have said that, I originally planned to wrap rocks in foil and spray them gold. But I was too impatient and wanted to get the video out so I skipped that bit during filming. But it is now filled with Gold rocks. I should probably do a follow-up video
the infinite carts and lamps kinda ruin it for the illusion.
You think so? I like the illusion of a train of carts heading into the abyss.
The lights help create the entire effect which requires a lot of light, so could not be avoided. Which it why I went for the “ornate” lamp style. So they at least fit in.
It’s why you will always see these infinite tunnels with repeating lights. Gotta have them u less you’re using LEDs maybe.
Thanks for watching either way! I appreciate all feedback.
get rid of that tune and ill watch
