- On my search for the replacement parts and faulty retro hardware, Ctibor, a long time viewer, contacted me and said, that he would like to donate some hardware for the channel. I thought we are talking about two or three old mainboards, so I agreed, but I never expected to get so much.

I wasn't too much into computer hardware back in the 90s (I do remember we had a PC with a Pentium @120MHz running Windows 95, along with multiple Macs my dad used for work), but now I found vintage technology as a nice pastime. I discovered your channel a few days ago - great find! I like your no-nonsense presentation style (no stupid clickbait, midroll sponsors, etc., and a pleasant voice to listen to). If you are into gaming, maybe you should (if you haven't already) take a look at the best PC games of the 90ies.
It was a time period of good hardware (VGA, decent sound cards and storage options) that fuelled innovative game designs - before everything practically became the same.
Born in '95, but i didn't have my first computer until late 2003 it was a hand-me over Pentium II from Compaq, where Windows XP and Pentium 4 was entering full force, since due the limitations i stuck playing MS-DOS games for a long time.
If you want to go back in time, start with dosbox on your current pc and play "loom" or s.t. (no costs). If you want to go further get a pentium 1 or 2 or 3 system. Windows98 comes for free these days...
I can explain the strange pci slot on the industrial setup. That's for an internal only addon card. It has no back IO for you to interact with. I've seen this EXACT board before inside of a tire balancing machine and they were using that as a control board for authentication of parts. It was very strange and bricked the machine when one piece on the board was bad.

The Compaq card with the big i960 package you got is in fact an early ILO-board (Integrated Lights Out / Remote Insight). We used these a lot back in the day with our good old Compaq Proliants for remote management and monitoring :-) In fact it's the grandfather's father's father of the ILO we still use today in our modern HP Proliant servers ;-)

The HP card is a "HP Remote Insight Card". Quite an old one that would have been used on Proliant ML370 servers and similar. Around 2004.

It means that you are young :) UMC were used a lot, also Cyrix, Texas Instruments, AMD, (and many more) all tried to compete with Intel.

That card that goes into a server with the embedded CPU and graphics is a Compaq Light Out card. It was used to remote control and monitor the server. That is an early one meant for the original Compaq, (Not HP), ProLiant servers from the late 90s to 2000 or so. Later ProLiant servers had these integrated into the motherboard and HP re-branded them as ILO (Integrated Lights Out). The PS2 port had a breakout cable that had pass through cables for the keyboard and mouse. These were for older servers that didn't have a header on the motherboard to connect the card internally. As far as I know, these only work in the era specific Compaq servers. They also run an embedded web server so you can use a Java app to remote control the server.
I'd swear I got one to (partially) work in an ordinary PC back in the day.
I had these cards, too and they work in normal PC, too. You need to figure out which pins on the header have to be connected with the power switch connector on the mainboard.
I have a similar card and the mobo to go with it, I pulled them from a trashed Compaq so I can confirm what is said above. Mine does not have the keyboard and mouse connection on the card as far as I recall.
About 12 years ago I cleaned house and scrapped a lot of my old computer stuff. Really regretting it, especially the ps/2 machines in server type cases with handles (haven't ever seen similar), the 80s vintage isa video frame caputure card by VideoWindows, and 3 rackmount motorola vme147 machines. Still kickin' myself. Hindsight is always 20/20.

I know it has been a long time but hearing "Pentium 4 retro build" just made me feel ancient. Great content, really love the walk down memory lane especially your 486-class stuff since that's where I got on the IBM compatible bandwagon.
Yeah, I also don really consider P4 retro, but many people do though. So I don't want to heart someones nostalgic feelings ;) For me everything, what doesn't have an ISA slot is not really retro anymore, though sometime still interesting to take a look at.

The card @ 15:00 is a serial Lontalk adapter as indicated by the presence of the Echelon ftt-10 tranciever. Lontalk is used for device networks at 76kbps typically in building automation systems.
Came here to say the same thing. It's a LonWorks controller. In north america, LonWorks is also used in rail transit applications. The push button is used for sending a "service pin message" to identify the node on the network.

It's easy, just start a YT hardware channel and gain couple of thousands subscribers. And if people find your work interesting, they will approach you and ask, if you want some hardware for your channel. That's basically it.

@6:57 - That looks like an iLO (integrated Lights Out) card or equivalent. They are used to gain access to a system that has been powered off or where you need to get into things like the BIOS to configure hardware prior to a full boot to an operating system.

I remember my deployment over to Okinawa Japan, And going in to a NEC store that sold, both new and boards that had problems for resale for parts ect. They had every thing there and that was back in 1998 So many of the older stuff I seen there If only there was a place like that i the states .But we hardly have anything made here anymore.
I think time has changed and even in Okinawa things are different compared to 1998. At least in Germany you will find no computer stores like they were usual in the 90's. I guess in US and all the other countries it's similar.
@@necro_ware We used to have places called Radio Shack. That was some one a little like The NEC stores back in the 90s. But they went to Cell phones and pretty much alienated the DIYers and finally went out of Business. They wen't nothing compared to the NEC stores in Japan. But you could get stuff to build pretty much anything electronic, After they went to Cellphones, everything else was over priced, and with places like eBay ect they just couldn't compete.
That "weird" Card, where nothing was written on the tape is probably a Compaq Lights Out ( iLO ) for the DL380 R01

AT keyboard issues with DIN type keyboards are generally the Fuse on the board blown. Since people hot plug them and you should not. Just replace the fuse and your good to go.

Nah. I store lots of older hardware without antistatic bags and never had any problems.
Not as much as all the masking tape and lack of popping the bubble wrap. I want to reach in the screen and pop pop pop.
@@Keullo-eFINit's just me. Goes against my ESD training. I can only describe that as like a car body specialist watching someone respray their car with rattle cans. You can do it, but it hurts to watch.
I cringe every time I see cards, RAM, motherboards, and CPUs wrapped in bubble wrap. Even worse, plastic (cling) wrap. X_x
Also, styrofoam is very much not the same as anti static foam. That poor CPU....
if you only make one repair video from the haul, I hope its that 286. As for the strange PCI slot on the industrial soc7 board, its likely for a RISER card. Likely propitiatory.
The Riva TNT 2 8MB was my first graphics card! Later replaced by an Intel AGP with 32MB.
3:40 The heat sink isn't very good. Get thermal compound on it, and an aftermarket heat sink for better cooling.
5:00 DAMN! I also had that WinTV card! He must be from Europe (UK or something). You can even use it together with a HD TV adaptor, and record HDTV footage at 480/720p resolutions (1024*600 is probably the max resolution supported).
That MSI 848P Neo-V! I bought one new, had it running Windows XP SP2, Radeon 9600 All in wonder, Soundblaster Audigy and a P4 Northwood 2.8ghz (I think cannot remember 100%) but it really did work well. It ran better than some of my more modern hardware. In the end the board blew a few capaictors but I refused to get rid of it. I would like to get it repaired and use it again.
Then you know what you have to do ;) Changing some caps is worth it to see the beauty running again.

Very nice :) Especially that Adaptec AHA-2940UW. Those cards were probably the best SCSI cards simply due to their compatibility with any operating system (even Linux). I used one for a long time in my Cyrix 6x86 180 system.I still remember playing the original Diablo on that thing. Memories.

If you end up doing the benchmarking on the ISA cards, I would really like to see the before and after memory upgrade numbers (512kb -> 1mb).
The card at 7:00 is an RIB Remote Interface Board, used by Compaq and HP to remotely control a server, see its display output, and send keyboard/mouse events. It runs a webserver on which you can see the output server and control it. The gpu on the card is not actually for the i960 but for the server itself. It's display output is shared between the vga on the back and the i960. The ps2 port is also not used to control the i960. Those emulate a ps2 keyboard/mouse to control the server.
Even though it is designed for an HP/Compaq Server, it should just work in any PCI computer/server. If you've got any questions about the card, or need pinouts for the special ps2 port and other connectors, let me know

The ALI 1531 board isn't the famous Aladdin V (1541), but Aladdin IV, which is a contender to the 430tx.
The Tekram SCSI controllers in their day were pretty good for the money.

ALi Aladdin V is a fantastic chipset, I have a machine with an Asus P5A ATX motherboard with that chipset, a K6-2 500, and a Voodoo Banshee AGP video card.
The one slot that looked like a pci that was shifted is universal agp pro universal slot if I remember correctly.

That P4 board would be perfect as the be-all and end-all of DOS gaming machines, since DOS wasn't super happy when tasked with more than one physical core, but that P4 had really high clock speeds and you could match the refresh rate of the RAM to the FSB for even greater performance gains. Maybe install Windows 95 or 98, so you can choose between a GUI and DOS mode? I wonder if that extremely large card from the Compaq server division was meant to be used just as a standalone PC on a card, or if it was meant to be a BMC adapter to monitor and control the server it was installed into. The challenge, of course, is that the vast majority of removable BMC or iLO type cards require proprietary connectors to provide it with always-on power as well as mainboard power controls to switch the server on and off remotely. Still a very interesting piece of kit to investigate further in the future.
I will definitely say, as long as you have space to store it away for future use, it is practically impossible to have too much RAM. RAM is prone to randomly dying on you, so having extra is never really a problem until you run out of space to store it all. The you have to spend time finding a RAM tester so you can consolidate down to only the fully functional RAM. If you can get a RAM tester that displays which memory modules on a stick are faulted, then you can even go a step further by desoldering and reserving memory modules to repair the more uncommon RAM sticks that you might have difficulty sourcing again in the future.
those ALS sound cards were absulutely more common than soundblasters in the 3rd world!

And now having gotten back to my computer to watch the second half of the video...
6:34 Compaq Lights Out Option card. This model looks like it came from their early DL380 stuff. Like 133mhz duel slot 1 time frame. The gen 1 DL380 I had came with what looked like that exact card and 2 733 coppermine P3's. Used regestered ram and had the Serverworks Champion HE chipset. From what I understood at the time, my server would have been the tail end implementation for that card until they started integrating it onboard. The card was capable of a primitive IPMI implementation, though not compatible with it, and would disable the keyboard input and the video chip on the servers motherboard as well. It could serve a limited web management interface to a java enabled browser, and could send video to propitiatory client software on either a windows machine or some flavors of linux at the time. Quite capable for its day, but also a bit of a PITA if you want to use the server in any sort of workstation capacity. As it becomes the primary video interface, and is a slow one at that.... As the video output on the back of the card is even encoded in software through the i960. And you are essentially seeing the stream it would be sending over network, and at its low frame rate. At least that is what my card did. You would not get the raw output of the ATI at all. Just what it generates for the purpose of IPMI, I cant remember either, but that connector at the end may also be for video input from the main board. But my memory is fuzzy, it could also serve s sensory pass-through of fan and temp data.
15:00. Interesting. I have no clue. My guesses. The filtering by the plug, along with what looks like some sort of a PHY suggests it may be for controlling servo's. And may need some sort of variable state output. The little bit of breadboard on the end would suggest the ability to customize the part to a specific application.
The SB4170 is a card that started to finally fix the atrocious bus noise many earlier cards suffered from. Not a bad card really. That Avance Logic 120... My only experiences with them were only ever poor. Poor digital audio conversion, poor audio quality, poor midi support and poor PnP implementation which sometimes made them a nightmare on non windows 95 machines.
22:40 That offset PCI is for cards to have room to rout cabling from the back of a card to something internal in the enclosure. Such as LCD display. It also allows use of the slot on ATX cases that only have 7 rear slots.

For that super socket 7 mainboard with KB error - first of all check the fuse on 5V KB line - just a few days ago I managed to hunt down a dead fuse and repaired similar motherboard that way. Also - do a repairathon again!

Hi its awesome to view all these tech parts, it reminded me of the golden age of configuring everything by hand. Why don't you do something on original PC and PC XT. the 8088, 8086 etc.
o-my... all the engineering for these circuit boards and off to the next PC ideas... 🤔i wonder how much beneficial real use they get from PCs until the upgrades. 40nm, 5nm, 3nm 🙂
The ISA COM industrial is most likely a rs485 interface card.
I remember another 1MB on board motherboard where it was disabled if the RAM slots were used, so that may only be 4MB, not 5

23:44 back in the days maufacturers made special slots like AMR (audio modem riser) or CNR to sell specific cards. A totally stupid idea wich never took off... regular PCI and USB was way more practical...
AMR was very short. That wasn't AMR. That was my first thought as well.

Yeah, very strange stuff. I've got an AM2 motherboard from abit that used a revers PCI slot for it's audio. Very strange.
I thought the same too but recalling earlier in the video, he did unpack a PCI card he thought was for industrial or medical use. I wonder if that card had the same offset. That is an industrial board after all. IF not it could have been some kind of special controller card or serial interface. We have older boards like that in older automation systems at work that monitor varios sensors and drive things like servo amps. IT could be something like an special perpouse I/O card as well
If you watch closely at 23:04 the writing next to the slot says "PCI1" ... That would imply that its a regular PCI slot. Maybe its for a PCI card that has no back end... An addon wich is ment to be used just internal but regular PCI... Its an industrial Board and sometimes they did weird stuff like this. I have some Panel PCs wich have totally weird and custom Mainboards... They work as normal Boards but you cant put them anywhere.
Looks like that last mainboard needs to have some traces replated, hope you have a replating toolset to put the gold back on the trace.
Great donations. One correction, you identified an ISA VGA card with a "WDC" chip on it to be Western Digital. A common mistake but this is actually from Western Design Center.
the "Future" on the 286 MB apparently meant 2021, with 5 MB you can load a 100x100 minesweeper. The mystery card looks like a IO card for some type of Joystick or track ball.
Looking at that server card with 3D chip and i960, I remember about the Intel D101 with 775 socket motherboard, that Intel sold with ATI Chipset 6 months before they announced that ATI was solded to AMD. Immediately Intel retires this model and launch the D102 with Nvidia Chipset. I think they felt betrayed!
I feel like nvidia and intel worked together to corner the market and worked together until intel fixed their IGP and betrayed nvidia resulting in ATI recovering under AMD.
Their business practices at that time should've dissolved both companies, sleazy business compared to AMD/ATI since then i've never bought from them again and probably never will.

15:29 is a card for a LON-NETWORK. probably some early ethernet style type custom network
I also have the pci usb2.0 card at home it does its job no matter how decent it is you can't ask for more from it
The chip that ripped off the network card may only be used for 10BASE2 coaxial networking, and the card might still be good for use with the RJ45 connector.
No, probably the other way around, I think that the magnetic was ripped of, thats used for the rj45 connection.

I'm really curious about that strangely offset PCI slot. It looks identical to any other 5V 32bit PCI slot and indeed the rest of them, but that offset is really strange. I can't find any information on that model of motherboard.
