Welcome to the eighth installment of my latest series entitled “The Craft Of”, a crash course on traditional 3 Act Structure which the vast majority of Hollywood films released over the last several decades have utilized.
In the final episode of this series, we will discuss the fifth and last of the five major plot points, The Climax, when your protagonist makes their final do or die decision, confronts the antagonist head on, and brings about a resolution to the story’s main conflict once and for all.
NOTE: This series is not meant to rag on any particular screenwriting guide you fancy. If it works for you, stick with it. If you DO need a recommendation, go with Syd Field's "Screenplay", which I'd say is the gold standard.

This series actually inspired me to begin writing screenplays, if only for my own amusement. And while I'm currently cringing thinking about my own material, I'll still charge along and try to improve thanks to you.

A cool thing I like about Michael Clayton too is the fact that the denouement is basically him getting in a car and driving away barely saying a word as the credits come in. The only denouement I can think of that tops it in terms of immediacy and satisfying finality is Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail haha.
If you ever watch the RUclips horror series, marble hornets, the ending of the main character driving off is really similar. Very satisfying too

I can’t take my eyes off of the container of grated cheese at 7:05 (among other points)
As someone who used to work at Market Basket, that gave me flashbacks to a few Karen customers, specifically this one lady who thought I swapped her grated cheese with a store brand one. Apparently, she couldn’t accept the fact that she had grabbed the wrong brand and started freaking out when she saw me pack it in a bag. For whatever reason, she *really* didn’t want store brand grated cheese and started demanding a refund halfway through the order being processed. Usually, we’d just void the offending item and rescan the correct entity, but this lady put up such a stink the poor manager’s assistant (a good friend of mine) just let her have a free grated cheese.
Ah, good times….
Although I want to be a novelist and not a screenwriter, this series has really helped me understand the three-act structure and how it works in different stories. Hopefully, when I recover from my Multiple Ideas Syndrome, I'll be able to utilize it well and in my own way!
Also, never thought I'd see a Raid Shadow Legends sponsor on this channel. Not saying it's a bad thing, just unexpected.

I almost forgot about that movie. But considering how incredible premise of the movie is, not to mention literally hating the heck out of the character Karen (ironic name, huh), I've given it a re-watch. Gotta hand it to Tilda Swinton for playing such a character that you want to hate so much. Oscar well deserved.
You’ve said it so often throughout this (truly superb series) but it bears repeating: structure is *not* limiting. Structure is not the same as formula-all the examples you’ve shared illustrate this.
Saying structure “holds you back” or whatever other nonsense freshman screenwriting majors say, is akin to an architect saying that building codes “hold you back”.
So now maybe you can do a video on ways to subvert or ignore three-act structure?
Another great climax is Shawshank Redemption. It’s like a master class in set up and payoff.

Good video. I think the simplest way to say it though is that the finale needs to be the most emotionally significant moment of the film. It's essentially the payoff to everything established beforehand in the story.

also how would you adapt the structure in this series for smaller works (tv episodes/short films that need to have a full narrative arc within 20-30 minutes)
I recently watched Michael Clayton a few nights ago, for the first time in what had been years since I last seen it. Man, what a fucking fantastic movie. Tom Wilkenson and Clooney really went all out in their scenes together, and the writing was just fucking top notch son! "I am Shiva, the God of Death!" And what you said about Tilda Swinton was on point, that woman felt that the easiest way to eliminate problems was to fucking kill them. And the hit men were professional and just cold as fuck. Mr. Vern told her all casually, "We deal in absolutes." He sure wasn't fucking around.

This has been a really good series, you've explained every part of the three arc structure very well.
But I don't know, I think you might wanna make one more episode...
Because while I agree with what's been said so far, sometimes the story isn't quite finished. Sometimes the audience wants to know what happened to these people afterwards.
Sometimes (not always, but sometimes) the story needs an epilogue...

Create conflict at the center of your story. Resolve that conflict.

never found out because raid is a good stick to use to see if the you tuber is worth your time. if they promote raid they are not worth your time because you are not an audience to them you are a walking wallet for them.
