  • Welcome to the sixth installment of my latest series entitled “The Craft Of”, a crash course on traditional 3 Act Structure which the vast majority of Hollywood films released over the last several decades have utilized.
    Today we will be discussing the fourth of the five major plot points: The End Of The Second Act OR alternatively The Second Act Turn. The End Of The Second Act is more often than not marked by our protagonist reaching their lowest point, where the stakes have reached their highest point, where it appears that all is lost, often leading to our protagonist having to make a final do-or-die decision, which serves as the climax of the story.
    NOTE: This series is not meant to rag on any particular screenwriting guide you fancy. If it works for you, stick with it. If you DO need a recommendation, go with Syd Field's "Screenplay", which I'd say is the gold standard.

    I saw PIG. It’s amazing and how amazing it is is being credited to the performance and direction which is great but I think what really makes it work so well is how well it uses three act structure. It’s structure is what presents that performance/direction/story in a heart wrenching way that doesn’t ever feel like it’s dragging-vid idea if you’re interested

    7:00 mark, that's what I love about John Truby's 22 steps in "The Anatomy Of Story". It has a ver broad and flexible structure with many examples of how the structure works for a powerful story. It's like a more elastic 8 steps of the hero's journey.

    Tip for writing: litteraly just write don't think about any of this stuff. Structure and stakes and rising action throw it out the window. Once you've written your story fix all the spelling mistakes and stuff then start worrying about structure, mold what you've written to the structures and themes that you find in the story

    11:18 The moment I saw the image of Leo's character from The Departed, I started saying, "Boy will this be a interesting episode.", since you mentioned the many flaws in the movie in one of your first videos you made, and where its adaptation Infernal Affairs did it better.
    But we shall see....

    • @MacabreStorytelling
      @MacabreStorytelling  2 года назад +1

      Yeah in retrospect I should have gone with IA but I’m too lazy to change the thumbnail. Both films have an incredible third act twist though.

    • @osmanyousif7849
      @osmanyousif7849 2 года назад +1

      @@MacabreStorytelling , well I wouldn't call Infernal Affairs's climax a twist since after watching it, it was pretty much established that there were already moles in Hon Sam's gang, the thing which The Departed as you mention failed to establish with Barrigan being a mole. And as you mentioned in that video, it didn't help when they added the whole FBI informant plotline, because of how it made things more contrived than they needed to be. Because Infernal Affairs was never about twist moments/endings. It was about the opening quote, of the film when one falls into doing evil deeds, they will suffer a Continuous Hell, basically describing the character Lau's fate.

    • @MacabreStorytelling
      @MacabreStorytelling  2 года назад +1

      @@osmanyousif7849 oh not that. The third act twist would be the finding of the envelope.

    • @osmanyousif7849
      @osmanyousif7849 2 года назад +1

      @@MacabreStorytelling , oh right.
      But also, didn’t you mention that one of the problems with that reveal was how the character Billy made the next move once he saw the envelope? As you mentioned in you video, Billy’s decision to just quickly leave the station (while tipping Colin off that he knows) was pretty dumb, since he could have kept his cool and tell someone like Dignam or Brown what he found out the next day. And while this also happened the same way in Infernal Affairs, the main reason the character Chan did what he did is because literally he doesn’t know even who to trust since literally, the only one Chan could trust is Superintendent Wong, and he’s dead, so who knows who Lau was talking to. But Billy had Dignam and Brown, who he would later call up to bring Colin in. And also, when the whole other reveal that Billy had these tapes put for his as part of Frank’s will, since in Infernal Affairs, Chan already saw where Hon Sam hid them (no will involved). And the only reason he went to get the tapes was for leverage on Lau, since while he may on have nobody to trust in the police department, the tapes will give all the evidence they need to know who’s working for who and take Lau down.
      But I don’t know, maybe I’m overlooking something…..
