I was 12 when he recorded this song. For the next few years, guys would always call me Susiedarlin since my name was Sue. It was that song and also Wake up Little Susie by the Everly Brothers. Loved it!
I get teary-eyes every time I hear this song. It takes me back to a much simpler time in the 70's when I had my own Susie Darlin'. She was all the world to me and I loved her so. How I long to be able to go back to that.
I was lucky enough to be there when rock and roll was born. I have listened to it until it lost its way. This song is the best I have ever heard. Everything about it it right. Its simplicity makes it something you never get tired of listening to. He still sounds good!
Susie Darlin was written by Robin Luke, About his 5 year old sister Susie in 1958. Susie is alive and well and She is married with 2 children and is living in Missouri.
WOW. ROBIN is still performing ...awesome! I saw him at Iao Theater at one of Tom Moffats in 1959...Shower of Stars live concert..I think...it was '59, maybe '60.....I also bought the 45 RPM at Music Sales down the road from the Iao......brings back such fun memories of a gangly goofy bucktoothed teenager sitting in the lodge seats.
wow, he still sounds just like the record, all these years later..."Suzy Darlin" was just a gem of a pop song----beautiful "hooks" with the guitar, and an irresistible tale of lost love...we all have our own such tales, if we are lucky! Thanks for the video.
On this day in 1958 {September 15th} Robin Luke's "Susie Darlin'" reached #1 {for 2 weeks} on the Canadian CHUM chart... One month earlier on August 11th it entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #5 and spent 17 weeks on the Top 100... It reached #23 on the United Kingdom's Singles chart... Robin Luke was sixteen years old at the time "Susie Darlin'" was on the charts...
Boy how time changes, still love this song. i really enjoy when these singers from days gone by do live shows. We all move on with them. Thanks for this posting.
EARTH ANGEL😇. I THINK HE IS SO GREAT!!!😍. AFTER ALL THIS TIME HEISS CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO GET ON STAGE AND SING!! AND HE WELL SHOULD BE!!😌HE SOUNDS WONDERFUL AND CERTAINLY WILL GO ONTO MY BEST OLDIES SAVE LIST!!!😘👍 THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
Yes, of course, you are right, and I did not mean to disparage anything. It's just that I am very familiar with (now) Dr. Luke's youthful, 1958 performances of his now legendary song. Certainly, I (and no doubt countless others) would enjoy seeing other videos from this memorable night. Thank you, Robert G. Perrin, Ph.D.
Gosh, I remember that song so well. Since I am a "Susie", I had lots of guys singing it to me lol. Amazing that this was the only song Robin Luke ever recorded - did it on a lark when he was in college (or at least that is what I heard). And still popular after all these years.
It may be hard to compete with one's self from years before, but doggone, I've already listened to this about five times in a row now and I find it just as appealing as the Dot 45 I have in my collection (wish I had the International release, but, oh well)... This is great to listen to. Thanks for the performance, and thank you for uploading this to RUclips!!!
Omg thank you. I was born in '57 but always loved Robin Luke and loved this song. In fact, I learned to cha-cha to this song, still do. Thank you. It's great to see him so recently looking and sounding so great. Wonderful video!
I first heard the original record on a juke box in Italy when on a school trip around 1960. I eventually tracked down a copy in a London record shop, which I keep safely and it still plays well!
I remember watching him at the Maui county fair maybe the late 50's I must have been in the second grade maybe? word was he wrote this about his sister worried about her coming home safely from a date? noting kinky..think he said he was going off to college to become a doctor... the maui county fair was such a special thing being one of the biggest events each year.. it was when hawaii was so hawaiian,, nothing like today... its impossible to describe what it was like then, just beautiful, a real paradise no high rises, everyone knew each other... deserted beaches, rain forests that were virgin....hawaii was still a territory big was a big mistake to have become a state..wish everyone could experience what hawaii was like then! aloha
Roomatesgirl No this song was written about his younger sister Susie, Not about his wife Robin Luke was only 16 or 17 years old when he recorded Susie Darlin therefore he was not even married then.
I filmed it :) and most things on my channel is filmed or made by me :) If you look done at the comments, the wonderful Mr Luke himself commented about my video, (Robert G Perrin) I do have more from the night which I will make public keep checking back :) I'm glad you enjoyed it and I was lucky enough to watch the rehearsal earlier in the day.
