I remember when my parents bought a new diesel Jetta in the summer of 1985. It was silver. They had it for years. The interior of this car brought back memories of family trips. So nice to see this car being cared for. Keep up the nice work.
The seats and carpet in that can be done with a pressure washer. Had an older Jetta back in the day. The seats looked black/dark grey. Took them out and just used the pressure washer on them and left them to dry. Suddenly there where grey/black checkered. Carpet went from mucky to black.
@@MrTheHillfolk With cars this old, you can completely remove the entire interior in a few hours, that's the good thing. You don't do this again and again, but in the best case only once.
There's an interesting story about the 1989 diesel Jetta. Just like virtally every other automaker, VW had discontinued their diesel models in the U.S. after 1986 due to lack of demand (gas was cheap again). But in 1989, to test interest in reintroducing a diesel option, they test marketed 200 diesel Jettas -- all or most of them in this same red color -- by putting them on dealer lots with no announcement or advertising. (Supposedly this was the result of a fleet order that fell through, but I'm not sure I believe that part of the story.) To VW's surprise, the cars sold out quickly, so then they kept making more of them. Another quirk was the 1991 diesel Jetta 2-door "coupe", which I definitely know existed because I've seen several of them in person, even though all of VW's brochures at the time specifically indicated that the diesel was only available on the 4-door Jetta.
I got a 91 coupe , my dad bought it new and i got all the papers, he dailyed it for 12yrs. It's been upgraded with a 1.9aaz with a 1.6 head , but is pretty much all original and in decent shape. I've probably got a few vids of it on my channel , it sat 6yrs in a garage and I resurrected it back in 2012
I don't believe there was ever a break in Canada. My parents and siblings had a fleet of them. 84(rabbit), 85, 86, 87, 89 all at the same time. When my rabbits drivetrain got tired I had the local VW shop put the engine into a 89 VW Fox.

Nice job! These old Jettas are great drivers, designed to drive, not to look at. Very ergonomic, easy access to front, back and trunk. The range of view to the outside while driving is outstanding with minimal obstruction to a 360 degree view. Very stable at high speeds. I think the speedo goes to 130 mph and they will go that fast. Nothing fancy and "just enough to do the job" German engineering and quality. Great cars. If I could only drive one car for the rest of my life, this model of Jetta would be at the very top of my list. Not sure about the diesel version as I never owned one....
You did an amazing job on this beautiful Jetta. I am working on my 88 Jetta that has sat for about 9 years after it was wrecked by my uncle. I can't wait to have mine up and running. Keep up the great work!
As always another great effort! A couple tips. 1. Presoak car before pressure washing. Use detergent. half cup to two gallons water and add either bleach or hydrogen peroxide as well half cup. 2. Well done! I have an Golf 1.8 "engine code RP" from 1992 sitting in my workshop. It sat in a garden for four years with water ingress. I agree with Finn. Whip out the seats and carpets. Give them a good soak with detergent then pressure wash and watch them come back to life. Faded black carpets respond to a light coat of matt black spray paint massaged into the pile with a stiff brush. Great video
@4:35 The clear coat is gone. The compound is absorbing into the base coat. If there were still clear coat it would create the barrier that it’s meant to do, and the compound wouldn’t stick. For this car the same or similar results could have been achieved with a quick detail wax and the speed and friction of the buffer. The compound is actually removing some of the base coat/paint, evident in the red paint picked up by the buff pad.
I took the time to polish my 89 tornado red coupe. After a few weeks it turned dull red again. I pretty much only polished it to prove to a few friends of mine that I could bring it back to life.

A cheap hack for plastics is baby oil. Even on coloured plastic garden furniture that has oxidised, just coat it and leave it to dry in the sun. Then repeat a couple of times! The Jettas in the UK were with dark grey bumpers, not black! As an ex sprayer, use a little spray of water with the compound, it will make it easier to use - ok you get a little more splatter, but it'll make it easier!
Finally, washing the car the right way ,from top to bottom. Why do so many people start at the bottom? I don't get it,but i'm glad to see you doing it correctly . Nice job.
That Volkswagen Jetta Diesel,Gt,or Gts is starting to look good for an 1980s car once it is fully detailed inside & waxed outside bringing that shine out it will look awesome.

She is in surprisingly good shape. Heat blowing gun is also good, to recondition the faded black plastic trims, but over time 1-2 years, they're getting faded again. I have an Mk2 Golf, from same year, and have those Avus Snowflake rims too. I think this Jetta is low on mileage, the floor mat is still fluffy. Sadly the soft type dashboard shell is getting cracked in all Mk2's, mostly on diesel ones. (due of vibration, i think). It's a very nice and worthy car anyway, and you did nice job! Greetings from middle Europe! 😄🖐
Pro tip , for the black plastic bumper and side trim use a heat gun to just heat the plastics enough to bring the natural oils within back to the surface , take care not to overheat any area and warp the plastic. Those 'back to black' products don't last very long.
Incredible job👍! Well done. My only paint restoration suggestion is to substitute using a clay bar with good old fashioned Plumbers Putty!! Apply with dishwasher soap while putty removes all clear coat contamination. Then after polishing paint just glows. Btw- my first GLi went 238,000 miles. And never opened engine. LOL

Amazing paint recovery... very satisfying video recording, thanks for posting. Use more polishing compound, use more water from spray bottle as you go, then simply hose off residue when moving on to new panel, polishing is complete just hose off compound with lots of water water maybe wipe if you have to. Use stiff paper or cardboard when spraying product to block overspray to areas you don't want to hit.
Driving an old VW that came out before 1990 is great fun. Beautiful reliable cars. Driving a new one is just... meh. I own 3 old VWs, between 30 and 33 years old and I drive a Golf 7 for work. The modern Golf gives me nothing. It´s just a tool to get the work done, nothing else.
If you want a cheap fix for the bumper plastics use peanut butter on a polishing cloth or rag. Smells nice too. The plastic absorbs the oil to give a nice sheen. I thought it was a joke at first but then did it on my passat nothing worked as well as the peanut butter short of repaint
Loving the videos man!! With the smell you have, When you pulled all the seats and had just the carpet left, you should pull the carpet out, pressure wash it. Then clean all the panels in the car with some kind of cleaner, probably bleach, or something strong like that. It would totally get rid of the smells.
Jetta Mk2 brought me lots of beautiful memories. 😍😍😍 My father has driven a white Jetta Mk2 for many years. We travelled across the Europe and Jetta hes never disappointed us, never left us on the road. And few years ago, he decided to sell it and buy VW Passat 2020. He sold Jetta to a guy who seemed very down to earth and cool, seemed like he will keep Jetta safe, but instead of it, he made a fuking pickup truck of her. Man I was so sad and angry 😠
Tornado red looks great when its fresh or cleaned up. Snowflakes and small bumpers complete the sleeper look on an mk2. Now just swap in an ALH, uncork it and have fun with it. Oh and back to black sucks. Try forever black or some black shoe polish. That's what most of us mk2 guys use.
Future reference for smells. I learned from this older gentleman when I detailed cars for a used car lot. He would set the car out in the sun on a 90+ degree day or roll up all the windows and blast the heat and have chlorine in a cup in the cup holder and just wait a few hours. It would clean any smell out of a car within a few hours.. if not. Wait longer.
Oh sweet gotta love the vw's. I picked up a mk4 jetta from lady I work with $100 needs a slave cylinder 👍. Gonna keep it and vr6 swap my current jetta engine into it.
I used to detail cars and a clay bar will get alot of containments out of the paint. When cleaning carpet use a spay of degreaser and water and use a stiff brush and elbow grease . You will get most stains out.
A neighbor of mine has one, mint condition, same color, refuses to sell it...I’d drive this car everyday, love the style and reliability of this particular model.
Looks great, with all the effort and time spent. Would sell quickly in California. No Smog late model Mk2. Perfect car for engine swap. Really enjoyed your content. Thanks for sharing.
I was thinking all along please remember detailing the bumpers and sidetrim. My Golf mk2 85 also ended up having this strange black/gray/whiteish color which looks like c... the solution and result was the same as yours🙂
I've had 2 different jettas.I had a blue wolfsburg edition that looked similar to that car and It had over 320000 miles on it when my cosin hit a deer with it .It still ran when we got rid of it,but needed a new radiator.Definitly would buy another.
2:50 They might just be broken, but with these old diesel engines you want to give the glow plugs their time to do some pre-heating. The engine will then start better. Or as i learned, a good diesel engine with good working glow plugs will start right up when you crank it, but let the glowplugs do their job. Modern diesels can be started pretty much like petrol engines, but old diesels do take time to pre-heat.
Very satisfying, been a subscriber for a few month's and i love the videos. That black beetle isn't a dung beetle, it's a male Stag Beetle. Those are the horns it uses for fighting other males, there are a rare species here in Serbia. They can fly too!
I would have removed the carpets too. With old VW's, that takes less than half an hour and you would also get to the mold and the dirt under the carpet. The car will always smell like mold now. The carpet can then be washed with the pressure washer, which is much more effective than wiping around the surface a little.
Daily driver right there 30 to 35 mpg ! Turn the pump up and advance the timing 2 or 3° ! 2 to 3 inch exhaust so she can breath ! Should up the fuel economy 5 to 7 mpg more and add about 25 to 30 horses and 40 to 50 foot pounds of torque ! B a whole lot of fun to drive ! And save fuel !
One little tip for the future.....The more times you blow out or clean your pad of the old paint residue, will help the cutting process. The pad pores become clogged and so will just keep adding the removed old paint back on to the car and so makes the process longer and you won't get the best result. If you need anymore handy tips to paint correction....take a look at Larry at AMMONYC. I learnt everything I know from him and Kevin Brown.
This video makes you realize what a timeless design the Mk2 Jetta and Golf are. You've done an amazing job fixing her up.
Absolutely! Thanks so much!

Nice vw thos things run forever, well the older ones. You made this jetta look very nice... I would love to own this
Future reference for smells.
Nice job, great little flip will make someone a nice little economical runner. Good work keep it up.
to make your paint correction easier, blow out your pad with compressed air after each portion when the pad clogs up with the paint residue
Great job on that car, had no idea it would run far less clean up that well!
Oh sweet gotta love the vw's. I picked up a mk4 jetta from lady I work with $100 needs a slave cylinder 👍. Gonna keep it and vr6 swap my current jetta engine into it.
Impressive transformation for sure. Amazing what can be accomplished with a little compound and some elbow grease. Good job!
Ótimo trabalho! Resultado muito bom e não ficou caro!
Parabéns!!!
Great job! Very good result and it was not expensive!
Congratulations!!!
Use wool pads on the buffer at low speed and stop around the primer. the hood got some burned spots where the paint was rubbed off.
Dern! Absolutely, they’re fun little drivers!
I'm no professional detailer either but I was thinking you want to use a wool cover.
But yea keep it moist is what you want
Came out amazing! (I continue to enjoy my ‘81 Rabbit Pickup Diesel with around 250K on it!)
Thanks youtube for letting me discover this heavenly channel
😍 Glad you’re enjoying! Thanks for being a part of us!
Very helpful info on detailing, but more to the point, great presentation!
I always feel so sad seeing cars like this not taken care of.
Looks great, with all the effort and time spent. Would sell quickly in California. No Smog late model Mk2. Perfect car for engine swap. Really enjoyed your content. Thanks for sharing.
If it was closer I'd buy it instantly, love this red skittle ❤️
Nice jobby..i dont dislike the patina with the shiny red gloss paint either...very current. An interestin vid..ta.
Junior Sample Sales Special of the Week ! Good Job ! 😎👌
Just call BR-549!
I was thinking all along please remember detailing the bumpers and sidetrim.
My Golf mk2 85 also ended up having this strange black/gray/whiteish color which looks like c... the solution and result was the same as yours🙂
you can hit the bumper plastic and trims with a heat gun to bring the oils out and they go nice and black again
2nd. Try a heat gun
Absolutely, all 4 were burnt out. Once we replaced she fires right up!
Honestly as the prices over here go over the top, I really would love to have one of those. Nothing special, just a simple car just for the fun of it.
Mike you have done a good job mate its a tidy car needs some new paint work in places but should serve somebody well for a few years
Phil in the uk
They all have a story. TY once again!
Yes. The backstory is the main reason I still have my 80 Buick Regal t top. I won't part with it.
Very satisfying, been a subscriber for a few month's and i love the videos. That black beetle isn't a dung beetle, it's a male Stag Beetle. Those are the horns it uses for fighting other males, there are a rare species here in Serbia. They can fly too!
You sure love those vw's!!! Nice job !!! thanx for the content.
Back to black.....and a light sanding sponge or 3M pad of your choice....that's the best way for old VW ABS plastic trim....
looks pretty good, now paint the the hood roof and trunk lid black with rustoleum professional and follow up with 2k clear(not 2x)
I would have removed the carpets too. With old VW's, that takes less than half an hour and you would also get to the mold and the dirt under the carpet. The car will always smell like mold now. The carpet can then be washed with the pressure washer, which is much more effective than wiping around the surface a little.
Super!I have also a Jetta Mk2,1,8 16V.....1991 bought as new....
Salute and best wishess from Arad,Romania!
Howdy, your hard work on the car cleaning n detailing turn out really well, great job Michael.
I think it's really cool. I wish cars were simple and boxy like this again.. And honest.
The best way I found to buff and cutting compound with a rotary machine is with compound and water stops the pad from gaming
