Especially when something like this has happened to you! The second guessing, the pain, the violation that plays over and over and OVER in your mind! The blaming of yourself, when it was never your fault! The triggering of the memories when you hear about a sexual predator like the one we had for President for 4 years, and I hope he goes to jail SOON! He can NEVER be president again! NEVER!! VOTE BLUE!!
You felt like these characters were your own family. Because of that the reaction to this scene is shock, grief, anger, helplessness. It’s a knife to the heart.
Sally Struthers can be a terrific actress when she wants to be. She captures this horrible situation well, and Jean Stapleton is nearly flawless in this scene.
My best friends sister was rapped when she was 15, I remember she wouldn't leave the house for months after that. The guy who did it was never caught, she never got over it and I don't think she ever will. I hope you got all the help you needed and are able to help others who may have gone through the same thing. Sorry that happened to you.

This is why "All in the Family" will always be remembered as one of the best-written TV shows of all time. No show had EVER touched a topic like this before, and it's done with unmatched realism and perfect acting by the characters. The way Gloria takes a long time to say what happened, the way Edith slowly realizes what she's going to hear (watch her facial expressions as Gloria starts saying "It's Saturday"--Edith knows what's coming, you can see it in her eyes) and desperately tries to comfort her, the way the actresses move through the space (Gloria is restless and jumpy, so Edith tries to remain a calming presence for her)...incredible. Plus the contrast between the humor of the previous scene and the chilling nature of this one...God, what a gift that we have these episodes to watch today. Thank you to Norman Lear, the whole cast, and everyone involved--what a legacy.
Best sitcom ever. I was born in 76, my folks used to watch it all the time. I remember it as the "yelling" show haha. It came on later in the 90s in reruns and I was hooked. Bought them all on DVD.
I went back to watch Edith's reactions. You are so right. The amount of acting being done by Struthers and Stapleton in this scene might be some of their best work.

I love how Edith felt the need to jump in with the bit about the sofa. Like she had to soften the sharp red words Gloria was getting out, probably for both of their sakes. It also reminds me of a type of duet where the singers are singing two different melodies over top each other but still harmonize. Such an incredibly powerful and timeless scene. 😭💔
yeah it was too much for her to take, so she started on the sofa bit to shield herself a little from it, because she wasn't sure how to handle it. Plus probably was somewhat freaked out by knowing what had occurred.
If you liked her in this you should look for the episode of Murphy Brown All in the Family, the episode is stinko but the only good parts of Miles Silverberg played by the handsome and ever brilliant actor Grant Shaud and Jean Stapleton as Nana Silverberg.
Her final role was playing murder victim Irene Silverman in a TV movie about Sante and her son Kenny Kimes ("Like Mother, Like Son"). Sante Kimes was a master manipulator and sociopath who influenced her youngest son into a life of grifting. The Kimes' killed Silverman and then used her credit cards and bank account for a spending spree until they were finally caught. Sante Kimes was played by Mary Tyler Moore, but Jean's performance of Silverman was haunting, as her character was trusting and then conveyed terror as she is brutally betrayed by the Kimes'.

Ironic Edith would face a similar situation several years later. I loved the part when she threw the burnt cake at her attacker's face and ran out the door; the audience applauded loudly for twenty minutes following that scene but had to cut it for time.
Gloria would even bring up her own attack from this episode to encourage Edith to report hers; Gloria was too scared to report it and she didn’t want her mother living with the same “what if” question for the rest of her life. Such an incredible show that brought attention to serious and sometimes taboo issues at that time, some even still are considered taboo.
Norman Lear was such a pioneer in television in the 1970’s and this episode of AITF is just another example of fearless programming under his oversight. These episodes hold up so well decades later because they were and honest and loving examination of living life in the real world. He changed us for the better. Thank you Mr. Lear.
I was Assaulted when i was only young and again when i got my first job....... once by a man and once by a woman, neither time was easy especially as a kid when no one would believe you cause the neighbor was "far too nice" and even worse as a man when you're told "a man can't be assaulted by a woman sexually or otherwise" then laughed out of the police station, I truly feel for gloria in this moment, and did so as a kid as well as i saw this episode only days after the first time happened to me.
I am so sorry that happened too you. I too am a Survivor once as a child by a neighbor and once as an adult by a boyfriend. I was believed as a child but not as an adult by my family. It hurts a lot, i hope you have been able to heal

This almost happened to my sister once on a bus, a horrible creep tried to grab my sister off a bus after coming home from work. She managed to free herself from him when she clocked him in the face her water bottle. But by the end of it she came home in tears and she wouldn’t leave her room for almost five days due the trauma.
This show dared to go here at a time when it was more than a little taboo to have on TV. Jean and Sally are so good here. Edith slowly realizing what has happened and Gloria's anger and pain. Heartbreaking episode but well done.

I just saw this for the first time. I wondered why because I've seen other episodes. Then it dawned on me. I was too young for this (age 8 or 9) and my mother must have made sure I didn't see certain episodes because it was not age appropriate. Just another reason for me to be thankful for my mother. Today this brought tears to my eyes. Wow. Peace and Love for all those out there that unfortunately experienced this badness in real life. Hugs people.

Men Michael's age in the early 70s were born in the 50's and raised by men who were born in the Depression era 30s. Neither of those generations of men were taught to be in tune with a woman's emotional needs. Especially when she went against him and did something dangerous he warned her against and wound up getting hurt. Insinuating someone isn't a good guy because they get upset or angry at a loved one getting hurt after doing the very thing he told her to stop doing because it was dangerous is incredibly unfair. Michael was indeed a good guy. He noticed his wife doing something risky and advised her against it. She did it anyway and got hurt. But he can't be a good guy if it upsets him? He's not allowed to be human and have an emotion that might not be the perfect one to suit everyone's needs? That's unrealistic.
There were things now about the show that probably wouldn't be tolerated, but so many times they addressed issues like this one that no other show would even approach. This is a master class in acting from both of them. All in the Family will always be one of my favorite shows.
The writing, acting, storylines, and the fact that Norman Lear wasn't afraid of the tough issues are the reasons All in the Family and Good Times are very high on my list of my all-time favorite tv shows.
Edith is so sweet and lovely, the entire cast are so talented and whoever was in charge of casting and writing for the show were extremely talented! The amount of character contrast between such a small cast is incredible, that was a very powerful scene!
Back then in many jurisdictions a woman's full sexual history would have been admissible in court. It's irrelevant today because of law changes that advocacy groups helped push for over the years. A rape victim would be raped twice... Once by the perp and then again through the judicial system. Can you imagine having your full sexual history be a matter of public record? This was why women either didn't report or were talked out of prosecuting. Be thankful this has changed.
It doesn't get more powerful a scene than this. The acting and the writing were phenomenal. The nuances made the early seasons of "AITF" the best of the best.
I watched it as a kid with my mom and sister's. Just an excellent show, acting. Way ahead of it's time. Too bad if they show it today, EVERYONE would find something to be offended about!
i often think this. todays society would have cried in the corner sucking their thumbs watching the tv we grew up on, and they wonder wht we have no patience for their antics
The scene that always stuck with me from this episode was a sign of the times of the attitude people had toward rape in those days. I remember Archie asking Gloria if anything happened and she said no, to which he replied, "Then you got nothin' to be ashamed of". Wow.
@@2degucitas This took place in 1971. Our views on sexual assault have thankfully evolved. Women still felt shame for being raped in the 70s. I also think that Archie, in his own way, was trying to comfort her that she shouldn't feel the stigma of assault. He's a blunt jerk, but he was trying to help.

Archie may have been that guy who rubbed you the wrong way for how he said things, but the underlying meaning was always heart felt and true when it came to his family. once he understood whatever was going on, he was a freaking softie. plain and simple. thats why we loved him. he was a blunt jerk, but under it all , he was love.
This show is something my parents would watch when I was younger then I just recently rewatched it and the scene where Gloria lost her child hurt the most to me due my lost of one and not having a father figure I it's just Archie did he's best at what he could to comfort her
It's happened to me one day.. Walking to a movie house.. Some azzhole grabbed my breast and ran..i ran after him until he ran into an old train yard.. I stopped..because I didn't see where he ran to..and If I followed..i might not be here today.. Never forgot

welcome to the 70s my friend. the world is a different place now, this show, touched on many of these topics. archie grows up and changes... but this was written and filmed in 1970-71. having been born in 72, i can tell you things have changed alot while some, havent changed a bit and some, are 1000 times worse. i rencently told my mother how i was assaulted in highschool, because ive never talked to her about it and, in 2022 you know what her response was?? i dont want to hear about this, i dont believe that you wouldnt say anything for 30 plus years etc. (which i have, therapy etc, just not told HER because what good would it do, other than to hurt her somehow, was what i thought) denying what happened to me, and then, blaming me, asking what i was doing etc. (which goes back to why i didnt tell her to begin with) she only wanted to discuss it to figure out what I did to allow it to happen. she didnt want to hear what happened, so to act like this isnt still reality, is, well bliss for some i suppose.
I love how revolutionary the episode was with the issue with rape. However, I wasn't at all thrilled when Norman choose to air his 100 Years of Music and Laughter special head-to-head with Law and Order:SVU. As of today, I have also began to question the true intention Norman had when Michael and Archie didn't want the rape reported because of the warning that the defense would make her look like the victim. The rapist wasn't posing as a cop like when Edith was raped either. SVU has addressed both the intimidations of defense attorneys and rapist cops, but Norman still opted for his 100th birthday special to air head-to-head with SVU. These revolutions about Norman's sicko friend Hugh Hefner disturb me greatly, and tragically, make me wonder if Norman would've only agreed to have the rapist captured if he were posing as a cop. Cops arrest rapists, and could've done the same with the rapist Playboy owner. The Playboy Mansion has been revealed to be a rape haven, and I now can better accept even the hypocrisy of The Cosby Show having Clair Huxtable scold Theo when it came to gentlemen's magazines, considering that perverted Cosby has now been revealed to have been one of the more frequent celebrity guests at the Playboy Mansion
This is one of the rare shows that both my parents watched and enjoyed. I was in high school and worked most nights so I've never seen 90% of the episodes- including this one. What happened after she told Edith?
I never watched much of this because my parents watched very few sitcoms. We only had one tv and you guessed it, parents watched it. I didn’t care much for tv anyway. I was usually in my room listening to music. Parents preferred shows like Dallas, Hawaii 5-0, cop shows, etc.
remember the original hawaii 5-0 god that was a great show. AND WHO SHOT JR... gripped us a a nation that summer. what was that other one... falcon crest or something like that. omg the glam and hair on those shows was like another planet. the hairspray clouds that must have drifted over those sets lmao

Especially when she went against him and did something dangerous he warned her against and wound up getting hurt. Insinuating someone isn't a good guy because they get upset or angry at a loved one getting hurt after doing the very thing he told her to stop doing because it was dangerous is incredibly unfair. Michael was indeed a good guy. He noticed his wife doing something risky and advised her against it. She did it anyway and got hurt. But he can't be a good guy if it upsets him? He's not allowed to be human and have an emotion that might not be the perfect one to suit everyone's needs? That's unrealistic.

There were things now about the show that probably wouldn't be tolerated, but so many times they addressed issues like this one that no other show would even approach. This is a master class in acting from both of them. All in the Family will always be one of my favorite shows.

The writing, acting, storylines, and the fact that Norman Lear wasn't afraid of the tough issues are the reasons All in the Family and Good Times are very high on my list of my all-time favorite tv shows.
Edith is so sweet and lovely, the entire cast are so talented and whoever was in charge of casting and writing for the show were extremely talented! The amount of character contrast between such a small cast is incredible, that was a very powerful scene!
Archie and Mike bullied Gloria into not going through with filing charges. She had regret in her eyes by the end of the show.

Back then in many jurisdictions a woman's full sexual history would have been admissible in court. It's irrelevant today because of law changes that advocacy groups helped push for over the years. A rape victim would be raped twice... Once by the perp and then again through the judicial system. Can you imagine having your full sexual history be a matter of public record? This was why women either didn't report or were talked out of prosecuting. Be thankful this has changed.

It doesn't get more powerful a scene than this. The acting and the writing were phenomenal. The nuances made the early seasons of "AITF" the best of the best.

The scene that always stuck with me from this episode was a sign of the times of the attitude people had toward rape in those days. I remember Archie asking Gloria if anything happened and she said no, to which he replied, "Then you got nothin' to be ashamed of". Wow.
As if she should be ashamed if it did. Smh
@@2degucitas This took place in 1971. Our views on sexual assault have thankfully evolved. Women still felt shame for being raped in the 70s. I also think that Archie, in his own way, was trying to comfort her that she shouldn't feel the stigma of assault. He's a blunt jerk, but he was trying to help.

Archie may have been that guy who rubbed you the wrong way for how he said things, but the underlying meaning was always heart felt and true when it came to his family. once he understood whatever was going on, he was a freaking softie. plain and simple. thats why we loved him. he was a blunt jerk, but under it all , he was love.
This show is something my parents would watch when I was younger then I just recently rewatched it and the scene where Gloria lost her child hurt the most to me due my lost of one and not having a father figure I it's just Archie did he's best at what he could to comfort her

welcome to the 70s my friend. the world is a different place now, this show, touched on many of these topics. archie grows up and changes... but this was written and filmed in 1970-71. having been born in 72, i can tell you things have changed alot while some, havent changed a bit and some, are 1000 times worse. i rencently told my mother how i was assaulted in highschool, because ive never talked to her about it and, in 2022 you know what her response was?? i dont want to hear about this, i dont believe that you wouldnt say anything for 30 plus years etc. (which i have, therapy etc, just not told HER because what good would it do, other than to hurt her somehow, was what i thought) denying what happened to me, and then, blaming me, asking what i was doing etc. (which goes back to why i didnt tell her to begin with) she only wanted to discuss it to figure out what I did to allow it to happen. she didnt want to hear what happened, so to act like this isnt still reality, is, well bliss for some i suppose.

I love how revolutionary the episode was with the issue with rape. However, I wasn't at all thrilled when Norman choose to air his 100 Years of Music and Laughter special head-to-head with Law and Order:SVU. As of today, I have also began to question the true intention Norman had when Michael and Archie didn't want the rape reported because of the warning that the defense would make her look like the victim. The rapist wasn't posing as a cop like when Edith was raped either. SVU has addressed both the intimidations of defense attorneys and rapist cops, but Norman still opted for his 100th birthday special to air head-to-head with SVU. These revolutions about Norman's sicko friend Hugh Hefner disturb me greatly, and tragically, make me wonder if Norman would've only agreed to have the rapist captured if he were posing as a cop. Cops arrest rapists, and could've done the same with the rapist Playboy owner. The Playboy Mansion has been revealed to be a rape haven, and I now can better accept even the hypocrisy of The Cosby Show having Clair Huxtable scold Theo when it came to gentlemen's magazines, considering that perverted Cosby has now been revealed to have been one of the more frequent celebrity guests at the Playboy Mansion

I never watched much of this because my parents watched very few sitcoms. We only had one tv and you guessed it, parents watched it. I didn’t care much for tv anyway. I was usually in my room listening to music. Parents preferred shows like Dallas, Hawaii 5-0, cop shows, etc.

AND WHO SHOT JR... gripped us a a nation that summer. what was that other one... falcon crest or something like that. omg the glam and hair on those shows was like another planet. the hairspray clouds that must have drifted over those sets lmao
