Besides physical attraction, it makes sense that Leonard had strong feelings for Penny. She's the complete opposite of his mom.
Exactly, Penny is such a nice woman. I’m happy they got together :)
Yeah. Penny is a moron! 😂😂😂
I wouldn't be so sure of that, in a few episodes they talk about how Penny tends to emasculate Leonard, something that his mother does. They even have an episode where Leonard is writing a murder mystery and the joke is that every character is just a member of his life and they think that the main female sidekick is based on either Bernadette, Penny or Beverly because she emasculates the protagonist who is Leonard's self-insert.
@@franciscoancer2618 Tbf, most people emasculate Leonard.
I think it explains his relationship with Sheldon.
"the hugging machine" scene really sublimates all the pain, hurt and frustration an unloved child could not verbalise.
Even sadder, his dad borrowed it too
When I was a kid, the question was not whether my parents loved me or not, I know they did. It was how long is it until my 18th birthday and I could get out of the cornfield we lived in the middle of. That was their choice of a "good place to call home", not mine... I wanted to live in the mountains on the north coast of California. And once I got there, I stayed there for over 2/3s of my life. The only reason I am not still there is my health, I'm old and in a wheelchair now, and can't live alone anymore.
Yes but it's a comedy. The punchline, saddest part being his dad borrowing it was hilarious.
There's plenty to cry about in the real world. The sad parts on this show are exaggerated and ridiculous enough that we don't need to wallow in the misery of the setup for the jokes.
Or, in a husband [neglected by his wife. Bah duh dum!].
@@Bigfoot-px9gj Its worse in the age of the internet, i knew my parents were trauma bonded to bad choices like kids and they basically became memes in my backstory. The word love changes as you get older
Huge kudos to Christine Baranski for playing such a despicable character. She's an outstanding actress!
She was also Martha May in Jim Carrey’s The Grinch AND Tanya in Mamma Mia! Phenomenal actress ❤

after taking a sociology class. i suprise leonard didnt become a serial killer
And going after women who look or act like his mother.
his heart is too soft for that but yes thats surprising too, maybe its the influence of his dad?
Oh, he compensated by watching Anakin Skywalker slaughter younglings over and over, holding his other overcompensation device which they call a toy lightsaber.
Me too!!! Growing up under a monster like Beverly, then moves into the same house with a psycho like Sheldon
Sociology ,the art of studying but learning nothing.
The extremely sad thing about this is that there are people in the world just like Bev. Extremely sad.
And consequently dysfunctional children like Leonard.
I guess when people like you don't have better things to do with their life, they just talk about me.
There are people much worse, some are in jail, others should be.
I never understood why he wanted to keep contact to his mother in first place. It‘s not like he is dependent on her and after all she did - or not did - it is a surprise Leonard even talks to her.
My mom is kinda like that, but it was clear to me that she just wanted me to succeed.
She nurtured a strong sense of competition inside me, and she never accepted anything other than first place in every activity I tried to do. She kicked me out of home when I turned 18, and also my brother when he turned 18. She despised my wife at first because she didn't graduate in a top-tier university.
Turns out one thing went right: I've got pretty nice achievements that she can brag about. However, I began to question the value of life and concluded that it's worth nothing. Now, I'm pretty successful for my age, but I'm also sure that I will kill myself at some point in the future, as soon as I'm not able to maintain the same achievement rate. I'd kill myself now, but my life is too perfect for me to do that. It's unjustifiable at the moment.
I find it odd that she was shocked that he didn't invite her to the wedding. Weird. You don't care for Leonard and never have so why would they? Christine Baranski is a great actress though
She and Sheldon have that in common : they do everything to push people away, to upset and trouble them but because they consider they didn’t do anything wrong and are within their rights, they act all surprised when this backfires on them (Beverly never considered this might be her fault if her husband drifted away from her and cheated, despite « being cold, emasculating and having shown him no physical affection in years » and Sheldon didn’t consider it may have been his fault if he and his brother wouldn’t get along)
@@victoiresouledelafont3428 But in Sheldon's case, he treats everyone the same... In Beverly's case... It seems like her other children were treated better. They have a better relationship... so she is doing it knowingly... Unlike Sheldon who Bernadette pointed out doesn't know any better
Typical hypocrite.
"Why should I invite you to my wedding? You're not marrying Penny."
@@denise3511Actually we don't know if she treated her other children better. In this case we hear from Leonard but we don't know how they feel (even if they seem to have risen higher in their fields than Leonard.)
It baffles me how Beverly didn’t think Leonard would care to know that his parents were getting divorced or that his childhood pet DIED but then again she’s basically the worse version of what Sheldon could have become without the family & friends he had in his life & even then he’s the hardest person in the world to be friends with.
Sheldon would have been a serial killer if Beverly had been his mother.
A supervillain.
it’s a miracle that Leonard didn’t become one himself
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 omg!!!!!
So, Beverly has some type of personality disorder. She went about raising her kids in a completely scientific way. If they ever had Leonard’s siblings on the show they’d probably be just as messed up if not worse, even if they’re successful.
But taller!! 😀😀😀
I bet they aren't even successful just faked it so their mom would leave them alone.
By the final seasons Beverly states that her other children have minimal contact with her, and their respective partners dont even talk to her.
@@rexcolt9742as they should.
Being without empathy and a narcicist has nothing to do with being scientific.
Her children seemed to be experiments on how to raise successful individuals and Leonard was the control. Because there is no way his siblings don't have the same issues if she raised them all the same way.
makes sense, Leonard was the control lab rat of the old witch
I think she used one method for each child and compared the papers...
😂😂😂
If I had a ''mother'' like this, this woman would be out of my life faster than the speed of goddamn light! Mrs. Christine Baranski beautifully played her, in fact, played so well that it's quite uncomfortable to watch her interactions with her ''dear'' Leonard. And to think there are people like that in real life...
Yes.Unfortunately for the world they exist.
I don't think she would care esp if she is cold and distant. That's why ppl who try harder with ppl who is indifferent to them.
I think she's autistic.
Reddit is the kind of evidence of that.
Really! I absolutely hate her! It's frustrating to watch her on screen!

I didn't understand what Penny saw in Leonard until I saw this.
Basically, he was a poor, abused puppy she adopted.
They are both train wrecks in their own unique ways
It's a soap opera sitcom. That is the explanation. The writers just decided that all had to get married no matter how cheesy that was. No narrative logic needed

"So Penny what's new in your life?"
She should have replied with, "You'll have to be more specific."

Somehow Leonard's mother's utter evilness manages to magnify Sheldon's lack of humanity.
No scrap
I think Voldemort hugging draco was less awkward than Beverly hugging Leonard.
I laughed more than i should on this comment 😂

She was a terrible mother. I don't see how she is a renowned parenting expert. I would never listen to her in regards to child rearing. Awful.
Well, look at her children, she must be doing something right
Her kids are successful, just emotionally stunted/ damaged...
It’s hard to believe such a woman would choose to have one child let alone three.
@@a_paradoxfunction4156Well, like any scientist, she needs test subjects to run her theories on. The greater the sample size, the better.
@@capture_diaries LOL-the way that character is written, it sounds like that would be her explanation for starting a family (and as the mother, she’s in the best position to manipulate variables)🙃
A lot of people ask why Leonard put up with Sheldon, his roommate agreements, and his insufferable personality. Well... this is the answer: he was forged a crucible of a demanding and insensitive mother who, (though brilliant and able to read into the actions and behaviors of others) lacked empathy or true emotional IQ. In other words, Leonard had years of dealing with someone almost exactly like Sheldon and he's one of the few people on Earth who has learned to manage their ways. And just like Sheldon, he just has forgive her for being who she is because she can't change who she is.
Sheldon is actually far more likeable in my opinion 😂
@@UnashamedCaliforniagirl He definitely has more redeeming qualities, though part of that is just because we see a lot more of him. He gets a lot more development.
OR……it’s because the writers said so to further the storyline.
Sheldon lacked the empathy on a small scale. But he cared where it matters, like the elevator explosion.
Beverly saying Leonard's experiment is not original research is a wrong statement. That's the prerequisite step for running an original research. Do what others have done, and try new things around it.
In her field you would have to use others research anyhow. She herself had to reference Freud.
Yep and not something any actual scientist would ever say, replication is the backbone of science, without it you have nothing but faith and religion. I also noticed she was written to say that being a professor at Harvard law was being the top of the legal profession, which is laughably wrong. No lawyer worth anything is going to be a professor until they want to retire. The legal system is called a practice, because real world experience matters more than anything else. The writers of tbbt are so bad, it's not even funny.
Also replication studies are so important, to find out if it's just coincidence or fake.
@@viomouse True, replication of experiments is vital to science, but no one wins a Nobel prize for replicating an experiment. Original research garners the accolades, and replication is only lauded as confirmation of the original research.
Furthermore, although Beverley says there is no reason for her to be proud of Leonard's high achieving siblings since their accomplishments are not hers, she does seem to value their high achievements while denigrating Leonard's achievements as not meeting her high standards.
That's not even just science related; If you're a lawyer and you're trying to argue a precedent setting case you look at similar attempts or related cases. if you're studying in a creative field you might learn a specific form or style or technique through a case study and be asked to write something in that style. The only people who believe new ideas should never be related to things that came before are self mythologizing idiots.
Leonard and Sheldon were switched at birth in the hospital.
That would make sense if Sheldon didn’t had a twin, and born in Texas, wile Leonard is from New Jersey…..
I can see why people would think that, Sheldon being born with a twin notwithstanding.
The woman’s a soulless, heartless machine, and Sheldon veers dangerously in that territory…….
Christine Baranski was so awesome in this role that made the awful Beverly into an iconic character.
As a psychiatrist and apparently a very good one she seems to know how to dissect and analyze any type of human relationship and intellectually knows how to function in them but on a practical level she’s out of her depth😅
Translation: smoldering sociopath
She is a psychopath, she has the special ability to not have any emotional connection and view it entirely analytical
@@BisexualPlagueDoctor she has a bond with Sheldon and Penny and she even states that she loves Penny out of all her kids spouses
She doesn't even know how to analyze them or function in them. Her books literally state stuff like you should always compare siblings, never celebrate your child's birthday and similar horrible shit. There is no way she would be respected let alone gotten her PhD in the real world.
@@jamesdiaz3959 No, she said she APPROVES of Penny the most out of all her children's spouses. And her bond with Sheldon is purely intellectual, not emotional. Basically she likes Sheldon because they see the world in the same way: As a giant petri dish from which they can conduct experiments and show off how smart they are.
Beverly isn't just a horrible person, she's a horrible mother
She is neither. She is very analytical and realistic. Not a thing wrong with that.
She's detached, like Sheldon. I guess that's why the two of them get along so great.
@@NotYoung3592 Not unless you have children.
@@NotYoung3592 "Not a thing wrong with that."
There is something wrong with that if you callously cause needless harm to people. Like bringing up someone's sexual history when they don't want to talk about it. Or constantly undermining people's accomplishments. Or not keeping family in the loop about important life events.
Basically everything in this clip, lol.
@MrTlong2010 she calls it like she sees it, she is truly a world renowned parent. Looking at her children getting to where they are, she must be doing something right
I think Sheldon would have been far happier with Leonard's mother and Leonard would have been far happier with Mary.
Exactly
Perhaps that’s the point?
Except Sheldon loves his own mother. Has kind of an unhealthy attachment to her.
+c.barrett5114 True, but if Sheldon was Beverly’s son, he would’ve been in jail permanently or shot dead.

Barring the whole Born-again Christian bible thumping, Sheldon's mother was caring and loving and is always there for him.
@@Falxifer95 Even that came from a place of love. She was worried over the satte of his immortal soul, just as she was after George died and she insisted he get baptized.
@@Falxifer95Except for that time she sabotaged the family's chance of an improved quality of life by gaslighting George into not taking the Oklahoma College Coach job. Or that time she hid Sheldon's CalTech acceptance letter.

It is silly for grown up human beings to have taboos.
Howard celebrating his birthday in a childlike fashion is better than Leonard's case.
I really wished we got a scene with Leonard and his brothers, and they realized that she pitted them all against each other, making them all feel unworthy.
Yes!
Having seen Young Sheldon, and how good his parents were to him, you really feel sad for Leonard.
And the way Sheldon expresses of his parents who maybe didn't understand him but always were supportive of him makes things worse
The laughtrack at 10:35 is so tonedeaf. It's okay to have a genuine moment full of meaning in a sitcom.
Leonard should've never forgave her in the final season; he should've given her an ultimatum - Love him like a true mother or leave. That would've been a satisfying conclusion.
She probably literally cant honestly. She will keep track of his urination schedule and updates from sheldon, told him her opinion on things, but no hugging.
She was a lot like Sheldon, but unlike Sheldon she was very aware of what she was doing most of the time.
I always laughed a lot but yeah, a person like her is horrible to be around of.

"Why my child won't visit me in my old folk home" Kind of parent example
That is the reason why Penny is so very much meant for Leonard: she is the total opposite of Beverly.
I have a theory that she is not Leonard’s real mom. And here’s why. Leonard father had an affair at an unknown point possibly after the birth of his sister and had already began having marriage problems with Beverly and had the affair as a result of affection and after Leonard’s birth, she decided to go along with being his “mom” while her other two children are are treated differently compared to Leonard.
