Finally, someone who really understands China.
Without superior productive forces and technologies, communism will never be achievable. That's why Deng said development is the hard truth. That's why China needs to embrace the globalization of capitalistic economy. State-owned enterprises act as the leverages to counter the negative influence of market economy and privatizations. They are also the major source of funds for tackling poverty, building new infrastructures, and upgrading the welfare system. Common prosperity is still in the top agenda of the central government. The basics of Marxism are still taught in almost every school of China. The socialistic nature of CPC was never changed. They just transformed from idealists to pragmatists.

@@caveman1334 Indeed, people don't realize that being an ideologue doesn't get you very far. You would think people in the west (whether it be left-wing ideologues like socialist/communists or right-wing ideologues like libertarians/conservatives) would get the big picture by now given that none of those ideas come to life and instead we get neoliberalism which is just fascism in disguise.

@@TheKeendark Actually there is a state in a neoliberalism system, especially in the US. This is something neoliberals claim they don't have but in actuality they do and it's very autocratic and is the opposite of what neoliberals pretend it to be (democratic). America recently exposes this fact when even against the interests of wealthy businessmen (the people you would think are in charge cause in most cases they are) in the name of globalization (of course those businessmen play along, they know how they got their fortunes and the dirt and blood they covered for it). After all, if this weren't the case then the US would not be spending trillions on the military.
This seems to be the only news program I know of that tells the truth about Socialism.

@@JS-ih7lu Yes, Ben Norton is great and he has Michael Hudson and Radhika Desai as guests frequently, all of them are excellent.
Just because it sounds good doesn't mean it's true. China is a poor example of socialism, if anything it's a representation of totalitarianism quickly shifting to autocracy with Xi's new policies and unlimited term limits, and no benefits for the people unless it's for propaganda. Anything China does is in retaliation to whatever the US does like a child throwing a tantrum.
The best examples of socialism would be in Nordic countries, even though more capitalistic, because they employ high taxes which cover their social programs which allow for a better work life balance. At least that's what they say.

Communist Party of China (CPC) would be the correct name. CCP is a very old cold war era name coined by US. Let's ditch that old name. You wouldn't want someone to keep referring to you with the wrong name.

The rise of China is a peaceful rise.
There's no evidence of any threats to the US. 🎉🎉🎉🎉4
They gain nothing from military defeat of a country in which they are interlocked.
The threat is that being perceived by the US ruling elite and their political administration ie; a threat to their economic and military global dominance.
Don't worry, the US can invent plenty of threats that China poses. Its what we do best and then propagandize our ignorant public to fear, fear, hate, fear, THE ENEMY. Next comes the killing. The US is unable and unwilling to change its hatred of the YELLOW PERIL.
China is not really about conquest and violence. It's baked deeply into the culture that peace and harmony are good, and that violence is actually bad. The bases of Asian vs. "Western" culture are strikingly different. It's inconceivable to Westerners that China is not as violent as their own countries.

I have to say that was one of the more interesting discussions about China that I've heard recently.
I particularly enjoyed that both speakers listened without interrupting when the other was speaking. That kind of common courtesy is, sadly, not so common these days.
Mr Hammond's insights into the process of creating a socialist country as a slow, step by step process and NOT by following some "religious" doctrine, is very valuable. Too often, China is portrayed as an authoritarian, top down society with mandates enforced on the people. His observation that it is the reverse in practice, is very interesting.

I had worked and stayed in China for many years and I was pleasantly surprised that there are constant reforms to many aspects of their policies and there was much freedom there. In many areas It's very much the opposite of how some Western politicians and their mainstream media portrayed China.

The dissonance of what we're constantly being told, versus the actual material reality is starting to come apart. After the de-escalation of US-China relations in 1971（Mao's Era）, China had begun to import advanced industrial technology and equipment from the US and Europe. Even if the utilisation was poor (but it was just as poor after 1978), this is still deliberately ignored by contemporary history.
The main differences after 1978 were the marketisation of the domestic economy (although largely utilised as the privatisation of state and public assets to the benefit of a few individuals), the allowance of foreign investment and the establishment of joint ventures.
China did not close itself off from the outside world in 1949-1971, but tried to acquire as much advanced technology from abroad as possible while being blockaded by the outside world.
When you really think about it, the culture of China is really suited to the ideology of Marxism.
The emphasis on community, fillial piety, give and take, and a deep sense of history and the struggles in long periods of scarcity and chaos, and the lack of an overarching organized religious traditions are all uniquely suited to transitioning a society into a socialistic and communistic one.
Most of all, there is a deeply ingrained sense of horizontal thinking and nuance.
China currently has 500 million middle class population. Income distribution is a pear shape. In 5-10 years it will have 800 million or two third of the population. Socialism doesn’t mean everyone is the same in wealth, education, or achievements. Human aren’t created or evolved in that way. People are gifted in a variety of ways. There are always Mozarts and Einsteins, Elon Musk or Jack Ma, sports stars and handicapped Olympians. There are always the crooked and evil too. There will always be some richest and some poorest. The point is to optimise opportunities for everyone, to be fair and just. China has recently earned status of the Happiest Country, 91% feeling satisfied and happy, 95% public approval for the government. That is what real measures of human rights, freedom and democracy should be since ancient times as desired by the Greek and the Chinese.

I just want to point out one thing. Look at the resumes of all standing committee members (i.e. the top 7) of the Chinese government. Each of them has the experience running provincial governments that serve more than 100 million people. In other words, each of them has the experience governing the people and the economy comparable to a big country in the world. So they are really the experts in governing, something needs to be learned through experience.
The US censors China accomplishments cause they don’t want the people to know that China alleviated over 800 million out of poverty cause it can cause an uprising against the government. Is why Operations Mocking Bird was put in place. They recently signed a 500 million funding to rank up the Anti-China propaganda.
And they all started at village level, just like Xi who gov a tiny village for 7 years before moving on to next level.
Western countries leading through popularity not merits.
That's how China's political system works. To go up the ladder for most officials, you have to work your way up. You can't expect to be selected as the leading members without experience at lower locality levels. The criteria is based on the merit (what the candidate has accomplished), not on populism. That's a big difference compared to the western democracy. In fact, this system has been adopted in China for thousands of years basically.

China never said that their system is for other to follow.Their system is developed for China and China success is the system developed with the chinese characteristic that take into account of the chinese diverse culture and ethnicities groups. Never did China said their system is good for the world and everyone should follow it. It is only the US and the West that want the world to follow their democracy system.
The China system is very dynamic and will change as needed, to correct and solve problems as the problems arise.

I personally think that Chinese know very well that Communism is still an utopia whereas socialism is much more attainable in the interim, it’s just that the party was named as communist party at that time when Chinese people had endured century of imperialists humiliation! Absolutely correct. Not to put China on a pedestal nor to denigrate it. The core of Marxism is dialectical and historical materialism.
It seems like every society can make rapid advancements when there is a belief in the potential of the society and a will to invest. The differences between nations which identify as capitalist or communist are exaggerated. Problems arise when the funding is withdrawn by selfish participants. Capital investors prefer to never allow any outsiders to gain the purchasing power that would enable them to become rivals. Global prosperity is the only answer, but the path from global poverty to global prosperity is the missing solution. The Chinese have positioned themselves for a bright future, but they also appear to be just as selfish as the USA. How will China uplift the world now that the greater world powers have decided to push China down? A stong military will be needed to avoid a hot war. A new idealism will also be needed. The Chinese worked hard for a generation but now they have crested the hill and discovered that the western capitalist myth was a lie. Western style socialism will benefit the wealthy but a global socialism must be designed to benefit the world. Can the Chinese inspire the world with a vision of global prosperity and limitless opportunity? The USA has the most effective propaganda network in the world. Can China build a more compelling narrative? Can the Chinese afford to create a robust network of historians and journalists and entertainers to inspire the people of every nation speaking every language? The goal of such a network wouldn't be to campaign against the west or in favor of China because that message would fall on deaf ears. Rather, the goal would be to save the Chinese and all other people by holding up an acheivable fantasy that engages everyone emotionally and moves them to cooperate for higher wages for childcare providers and better childhood opportunities. If childcare is properly funded then all workers will demand proper pay. A global increase in wages will swell economies with new consumers and create jobs for everyone with the will to work. The will to work will be sustained by the businesses that pay enough for the growth of families. There isn't any need to eat the rich or to fight. People who provide greater value will enjoy greater wealth. The earth will sustain us all.
The world is realizing China “does”. The US talks. China builds. The US destroys. China has developed itself into a problem solving prosperous developed and advancing society. The US has undermined itself into a neglected deteriorating indebted and dysfunctional dystopian society.
The global world is hearing about China’s investments as development projects (BRI) at the same time the world knows of all the wars, invasions, sanctions, death and destruction.

Which explains the US (epitome of western capitalism) is a deteriorating decaying neglected society. Western capitalism is a slum landlord mentality because the mentality is not to reinvest into the maintenance in the upkeep or upgrading of the building but just to milk it dry. Our tax system rewards the rich with tax cuts that the public ends up owing the debt (deficit) then the government borrows that same money back from the very sources that were given the tax cuts that the public owes, now the public owes again with interest the money that should have been paid by those that received the tax cuts. All at the expense of the society asa whole, cuts on education, Heath services, social security, infrastructure maintenance / upgrade, so the greater whole of society suffers and carries the debt of the few. Plantation capitalism.
China’s socialist capitalism has developed its infrastructure, expended on educating its citizens, upgraded the quality of life, established economic opportunities, and has and is showing to the world a different approach of governing economics. A societal capitalism.

Agree that we should look back much longer than 70 or 100 years. The Socialism with Chinese characteristic, is more like Confucian in modern day economy. Democratic in Confucian through the 5 relationships (Li) and the Chinese 4 social classes. Looking through those lenses, would be much easier to see the "Socialism with Chinese characteristic"
This was a really good informative discussion. It seems that China's success was in part due to very deliberate and intelligently based policies that did not succumb to the "immediate gratification" ethos which controls western policies and societies. The problem I see, however, with using some aspects of capitalism to build stepping stones, so to speak, to reaching goals is the danger of creating a sort of Frankenstein that cannot be controlled. Capitalism can easily turn into a runaway train - it might be shortsighted to think that in a population that large it can be set loose and then, when it served its purpose, reigned in to put society back on its intended path.
China Reform and Open began in December 1978 between Deng and Jimmy Carter governmental negotiations which came about since Kissinger and Nixon visits in 1972. The former was more Cold War politics and the latter more business and money. China was well aware of world events and US financial and military hegemony. China knew the US was after exploiting its resources and cheap labour. For a very poor country the unfair offer was better than nothing. Socialism with Chinese characteristics was first pronounced in September 1982. During the same period China was negotiating with the UK for the return of Hong Kong. One Country Two Systems was first suggested by China in 1979. In order to open China to foreign trade, China must subject its Planned Economy to capitalistic changes, it must improvise. Foreign businesses would choose what were profitable and leave the rest. Therefore China flexibly improvised and created ideas of One Country Two Systems as well as Socialism with Chinese characteristics. They were not meant to be definitive but ambiguous. After all, who could predict what could happen in the future? If one had read books like Michael Hudson’s Super Imperialism or The Confessions of an Economic Hitman, or watched what happened to USSR and Japan circa 1990, one could understand that China has always been alert of US imperialism and hegemony. In order not to fall victim, China must overcome US power and it has brought a new world as we know it now. For movie fans, the US is the High Table and China is John Wick and Caine, as along with the Winston and the Browery who are the rest of the world. One characteristic of western capitalism is materialism and never ending greed towards unimportant things. Why is it fun to live in a 20 room mansion with a few people? Why is it fun to sail around in a super yacht and watch TV? Why private jet to golfing at Augusta when he can’t break 100? Why is it fun to get high and lose her mind? Shouldn’t doctors be proud to save lives and lawyers uphold justice instead of making millions doing the opposite? Western fantastic is the stumbling stone to our biggest problem of global warming. China can lead world to solving its biggest problems were it not for the US to get in the way all the time. Humanity doesn’t need the nuisance of the US.
I'm an American and our democracy and capitalistic system has broken down completely. When the government doesnt give a shit about the people anymore, there is no way you can claim that it is a viable or working system.
I'd argue it's working as intended and isn't much different now than at any point. It's a system of institutionalized social hierarchy maintained through plutocracy and enforced with violence. People are just becoming educated which is making an unjust system untenable. They want to then destroy education which in turn makes America unable to compete with higher educated more socially just countries. To close the gap, the oligarchs want an extremely destructive global war.

Chairman Xi Jinping's three books on how to manage and govern the nation of China stated clearly about Communist Party is the core to steer any direction the country may derail from the socialist system that must maintain equality, share prosperity and narrowing the gap of wealth disparity.

Brian, you said that the counterrevolution in the Soviet Union started in the 1980s, but my understanding is that it started in 1956 with Khruschev's "secret speech," which demonized Stalin's legacy due to the fear that the economic and military power of the US government would overwhelm the communist bloc and that compromise with the West was 'the only viable way forward, which turned out to be a self-fulfilling prophecy that led to the 1991 Soviet demise. Is this not correct? In any case, thanks for another terrific episode.

Why did China think that building a socialist society would take a long time? We hear this over and over from so many people, yet no one says why this is the case. What were the Chinese incapable of that required the rollback of socialism won by Mao?
The issue was simply productive forces. A retreat from socialism to get the productive forces they need. Basically, they had two choices. Keep the socialism or end up like North Korea/Cuba because the imperialists place crippling sanctions on you or make concessions to develop and build socialism slowly.

The only way to get around the need for "capital" is to build a trading bloc that can completely obviate the need to trade with capitalist countries. This is what the Soviet Union should have done. @@peternyc The Soviet Union suffered from ideological and political problems. A large bureaucratic system that was formed in the earlier days the Soviet Union was never fully purged off. khrushchev intensified this problem when he moved the party away from the people and abandoned Stalin's democratization and anti bureaucracy policies. (Note that the USSR was already Democratic but more needed to be done). Every leader khrushchev essentially did nothing to resolve this issue and this bureaucracy started to become more bourgeois. So you have a party thats no longer the peoples party which means you don't really have proletariat democracy anymore + a new bourgeois class forming. Eventually this bureaucracy overthrew socialism in favor of capitalism. The Soviet proletarians lost their battle of class struggle and capitalism was restored. Even though this was a pretty long it's a very short summary of what happened. "Socialism betrayed" is a great book that goes into detail on why the USSR collapsed. Highly recommend reading especially since you can easily find a free PDF.

Chinese socialism:- education expenses, electricity prices, medical expenses all dropped over the last 10 years. Housing expenses is heading for a huge drop. Inflation remain relatively stable and is much lower than the west. Transportation is extended over regions even the numer of travellers is low. Extensive pollution controls are in force namely river is much cleaner, emission from fossil fuel power station is the lowest in the world, solar and wind power are most widely used, planted more trees than any other countries, turning deserts into green pasture etc. China is promoting free trade, peace, share prosperity .... etc. No country is perfect, but from many respects, Chinese government performance is obviously serving its people and in turn prosperity of the world. I honestly do not understand how any nation with any moral and ethical standards could possibly demonised such a country.

Unfortunately most Western experts failed to understand that the China model is not new. The analysis continues to stray into arguments about western ideology. The talk centers on words such as Socialism and Capitalism are a non starter. To understand the Chinese mindset, we must examine the literature through the millenniums such as the Confucius and other great thinkers of the time. The Chinese think tanks and the leaders are good students of history. They don't draft policy and governance out of wits of the moment.
The bigger question is how will Capitalism Countries accept the possibility of a Socialist world?
We won't and you'll get a nuclear war.

Chinese reform is economic, USSR reform is political, which one is the pragmatic one? One Chinese commentator once put it cleverly, she said that CCP is a big sail ship or galleon if you will, sailing in the ocean, and the sail is for the public will to direct the ship’s orientation, and the ocean that it is sailing in is the 1.4billion people! So the emergance of the deng xiao peng philosophy of reopening the country was the chinese productive forces insufficient level to reach the bases material conditions of socialism that requires high productive forces .. and while there was a huge gap between the imperialist capitalist countries and the imperialized countries it was hard for china to stay on the its path as it didn't get the level of productive forces level required for socialism .
Second : to gain the development for productive forces china was forced to open the country for the capitalist corporations with their nature to exploit the workers and to search for new markets for their commodities .
So the conclusion is that china is a country administrated by the chinese communist party that represents the workers and peasants interests to build the socialist system based on its own material conditions that led it to open the country for the transfer of technologies , sciences and experiences and it knows that the capitalists system evil nature will cause contradictiosn and flaws against the workers and peasants so the situation required china to use the regulative methods to make a balance between the aim of developing the productive forces by opening the country for capitalist corporations and the aim of planting the seeds and suitable environment for the socialist system to be reached .
The capitalist contradiction ofcourse was responsible for some problems in china like the big corporations taking the collective lands of peasants , some violations against workers as they struggle against the capitalists greed ..etc
The most important question here is when will china head to nationalise all the means of production from the foreign and local capitalists ?
I think china has achieved tremendous transfer level of productive forces , why didn't the communist party start the transformation from that mixed regulative economy to socialism as the soviet union did after the NEP ?

It is not just the economic blockade that is preventing China from going full Socialist, but the proxy wars. China has land borders with India and Pakistan. And sea borders with Japan, Philippines and Taiwan. If China somehow nationalizes its economy, it would be a huge challenge to China itself and also a huge blow in the face of US. USA by then won't be holding back against China militarily. It is pragmatic for China to stay and bide for the right time to emerge.

I would be patient with proponents of Socialism with Chinese Characteristics. Overall, it is a strategic retreat but also IMO not great Marxism. The PRC would be almost completely liberalized if it wasn't for Xi and his faction. Now they have to fix all the excesses of Deng's reforms. To keep from admitting that Deng's reforms delivered mixed results at best, the CPC and it's defenders tend to bend logic a bit. That is why they always sound like they're telling us riddles when we ask about contradictions. At least it is good to know that Xi is taking the country back on the path to socialism.
EDIT: This is not to say the PRC and CPC do no deserve critical support from Western aggression. They most certainly do, but SWCC is flawed. Reform was needed but they almost lost the line during the wild 90s. There is a lot to correct and get back on course to reach socialism. Good thing Xi and his faction are in the driver's seat.
one thing I want to add, there never was any successful commuisim country, or even socialism country, so everything has to be learned by doing. correction is needed, and a must have ablity to have in order to get back on course when needed. In that regard, the CPC has offered something unique and rare and worth to study and learn from.
and to put it another way, there aways be danger for the CPC to fail, counter-revelotion forces will never stop doing that.

The khemer rouge as it tuned out were supported by the US, so while communist vietnamese were in cambodia fighting them and securing the southern part of the country. Chinese forces went into the north to give the illusion that the vietnamese are going to loose and eliminate the threat of another invasion by the US or any other party from the south backed by the US.

My theory is just a theory. History is far more Complex than that. And there are more factors at play. However in the after math both deng and vietnam got what they really wanted.
Deng consolidated power by reforming the PLA so they couldnt overthrow him + got diplomatic relations established with the west.

Well the argument precisely is that, NO, the goal of both sides were not the same. The Deng side had the goal to grow the economy, produce wealth and incorporate technology AT ANY COST, including breeding a very strong bourgeoisie, which it’s the counter revolution in itself. The Mao side makes socialism the centrepiece of any social, economic, cultural and political development. Let’s see, international capitalist and imperialist financial capital LOVE CHINA. Why? Well, up till 8-10 years ago very low labour cost, very disciplined and educated (easy to exploit and productive) labour force, a one Party dictatorship that simplifies the relationship between financian and industrial capital with the government. That analysis is too simplistic. Socialism is a transitional system from capitalism towards communism. You cannot build socialism without abundance. It cannot be said that China is capitalist outright, but that it is going through a post-capitalist phase to build socialism. In China it could be said that there are certain capitalist elements, but it is not capitalist itself. It is true that it cannot be called socialist either, since China has not yet finished building socialism completely.

There is very litte evidence and the western journists all reported from the confines of their hotel rooms. At that time there were fewer cameras and there was less international communication so the reporters could say anything. It's clear that there was a violent conflict after a long period of demonstrations. How did the fighting start, who really killed who, and how many people actually died?
