Sad to say, China wasted 30 years while the West had advanced since 1949's Communism under Mao totally shut themselves from the outside world for Capitalism was viewed as 'evil'. In 1979, Deng opened up China and the Chinese were surprised to see ' variety is the spice of life'. Hence, the saying 'it does not matter what colour of the cat, as long as it can catch mice'
Why wait for 30 years to open China door to the world and what is the purpose of his coming to Singapore in 1979 when the local Chinese communists are causing so much terrorism of their unhappiness when they wanted to return to China. Hence, this Chinese problems remained today.
Mao united China, Deng modernized China inspired by Lee Kwan Yew Singapore. After Deng visited Singapore, he vowed to build 100 cities as good as Singapore. zhu Rong Ji with his zero tolerance for corruption and Xi Jin Ping with his focus on listening to farmers and the poor in remote villages in China. These Chinese leaders all had their roles in shaping China. China couldn't possibly have moved upward because of one leader ONLY. But the Chinese people are also hard working folks. Chinese people value education highly. Chinese people are also born entrepreneurs. These all factors make the Chinese people do better in life when given good leadership and opportunity. Dutch people call themselves the Chinese of Europe due to their same characteristics, entrepreneurial and love for learning.

it is china long culture even during imperial dynasty, king needed to do his duties not because he is king. he got to answer the people and “heaven”, if the king against it, be prepared to be overthrown! 😂😂😅
Africa would be better off looking to other countries for advice and as role models, China's growth depended heavily on a single party state and cult of personality to grow and to maintain the power of the state there were heavy sacrifices. After the revolution Mao did the same thing that the Japanese did in the Imjin War and invade Korea to kill off all the young skilled warriors so they couldnt destabilize the newly formed empire, and he did similar to Stalin with the Holodomr and starved people into submission to him to maintain the power of the party. Mao also industrialized China through heavy support from the USSR for decades and was pretty shameless about stealing from them at the same time (Chinese IP theft is nothing new). Those are all things that most African nations would struggle to do and there's hurdles that many African countries face that China never really did like heavily divided and varied languages and religions and ethnic groups, not to mention serious problems with tribalism in some places. China has always been a very centralized power whereas there have been few centralized African governments that werent foreign powers ruling over Africans so they need to craft a state pretty much from scratch while the CCP had the benefit of a culture already accustomed to and expecting a centralized state, there was already a social contract in place of people willing to sacrifice prosperity and liberty in return for stability and peace.

@@greekenderman2005 In my view, the political system in Western countries like your country cannot produce such leader as Deng, unleash you change or reform your system close to China's. Under your democracy and freedom, leaders must be elected through one person one vote. So the candidate must satisfy the immediate or instant requirements to get elected and cannot give long-term plan for the whole country, coz the new leader may overturn the previous' policies or plans very easily. Then the political engine may idle/ tick over. That's why western democracy is not welcome in China. It looks like procedurally democratic, but quarreling without a conclusion.
@@greekenderman2005 I am not bragging our system is so good. Frankly we also don't think our is very good, far from perfect. But ours can get things done but sometimes not so procedurally democratic as yours. The common people only want concrete benefits and they don't care too much about the political prodecures. We also have procedures, but some are internal operation. This is true. However, our leaders are not down to earth and have already abandoned the idealism as of now. They make long term plans for the country and also care about the daily affairs especially the people's livelihood. Our government is not perfect truly. Not so transparent, also some are corrupted. But people care about their lives more.
@@greekenderman2005 when Deng was in power in 1980s, he was making plan for China , which would span four generations until 2050s. His very words: I can't live until then, but I am responsible to make the plans for the people and the country then. His three-step development strategy is: from 1980-1990, addressing the people's problems of food and clothing; from 1990 to 2000, making people reach the “better-off level” for the people's livelihood; from 2000 to 2050, with 30-50 years of hard work, making China basically realize the modernization, close to the level of a moderately developed country. Deng cannot imagine the global situation will dramatically change in the new century and also can't imagine China will develop so fast. No one has predicted this. Even in 2002, in the 16th national congress of communist Party of China, the national statistics bureau gave the new leadership the report and predicted that China may surpass Japan in 2030 in GDP and catch up with US in 2050s or longer time. However, we surpass Japan in 2010 and now is running after US. These are all beyond Deng's plan but generally the party and government is still following his plan, only making his plan more detailed and feasible through concrete policies. His plan is down to earth and practical.
One cannot discuss Deng's reforms without mentioning Deng's meeting with Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew in 1978. Since that visit, China has sent tens of thousands of Chinese officials to Singapore for exchange/training.
Under Mao life expectancy rose from 35 years to 65 years. Grain production tripled from 120 million tons to over 300 million tons. Population doubled from 550 million to 1 billion people. The video was exaggerating Mao's mistakes.
I had the good fortune of seeing this great man in person as he was driven past my office for a briefing at the Prime Minister's office in Malaysia where I once worked.
What people tend to misunderstand is the fact that Deng Xiaoping success achieved because of what Mao Zedong had put the basic system. Many people think that Mao Zedong was the main cause of modern China suffering, and Deng reversed all of them to make China great again. The truth is the other way round, Mao put a very important foundation for China, such as the tough political system, raising literacy, etc. Deng was the one that know how to harvest what Mao had done. At the time Deng take the leader position, many talented men had been in the government. He did correct Mao mistakes, but Mao's contribution weigh more than the mistakes, although some mistake may be considered fatal. Without Mao contribution, it is certainly impossible for Deng to achieved the greatest development in human history. All people who truly understand the great development of China stated this.
Just bear in mind If Mao did not have dedicated supporters and followers like Deng... etc. he could not have achieved the goal of uniting China. But Mao was an egostic leader who did not like to listen to new idea different from his. Hence many of his followers who suggested economic reforms earlier ended up in jail and died inside or being sent to hard labour camps to be "re-educated" like Deng. Many Chineses died and suffered greatly because of Mao failed economic policies during his lifetime and his unnecessary Cultural Revolution before his death.
@@oneshothunter9877 check it by yourself, illiteracy rate in 1949 was about 80% (400 millions from 500millions pupulation). In 1977, illitereracy rate was 25% (240 millions from almost 1 billion population). This was great result because if you live in rural area at that time, many things were not accessible. And also, unlike Deng era, Mao encouraged people to have more children. The population was doubled ("doubled" was not really appropriate since when the great leap forward a huge number of citizens died of starvation), yet literacy rate increase significantly. I'm not a fans of Mao, but Mao really put important foundation for Deng to reap the great success
Deng said 'Prosperity is only possible with political stability'. I think the US has lost the top spot with its now deeply divided political splits. Excellent in-depth and new insights doco. Mao's time was not that bad, contrary to what people tend to believe, Mao has solved starvation which plagued China for hundreds of years, before 1949, famine and starvation is the norm, Mao's famine is, ironically, an abnormality(albeit more due to human error), Mao also eradicated all the colonial and imperial foreign influence on China, which helped Deng's reform of China's economy (otherwise, why China's opening up is successful while so many are not). And Mao has given China a fairly good rudimentary educational system, which helped Deng's reform by bringing up an entire generation of educated workforce Today's mainstream narrative separates Mao and Deng's era, Mao is the baddy and messed up everything and Deng is the hero and saved the day, but even Deng admits that his reform can not be successful without development under Mao

Mao fired Deng several times and within those periods when Deng was temporarily fired starvation also came back several times because of Mao's principles that did not work. That's why Mao hired back Deng because he knew Deng can solve that problem. Unfortunately you don't have enough historical understanding about this issue. Mao's principles for farmers created the starvation. Before that period there was no starvation.
They start the documentary in a very stereotypical way by stating that millions of Chinese died of starvation under Mao but this happened within the first decade of Mao's rule. Lots of Chinese also starved to death in the decades preceding Mao's rule and one should not forget that the US and other Western countries instituted a blockade against the People's Republic of China and refused to sell China grain. And while millions of Chinese did starve to death in the early years of Mao's rule, it should also be mentioned that hundreds of millions of Chinese were born under Mao's rule, and not just born but grew up well-fed and well-educated. These Chinese born and educated under Mao were the ones that Deng could later rely on and leverage in pushing to make China the factory of the world. There's a reason why this boom happened in China and not in India with a similar population where most children were malnourished and many could not read and write.

Deng Xiaoping, one of the greatest leader of the 20th century.

For Deng's success, it required the Chinese inherited spirit of Education, craftsmanship & Workmanship.
One of the greatest world-changing stories ever told.
Interesting

I love CHINA and how I wish African leaders should be going for advice from the Chinese than loans. I love Deng Xiaoping and i love Chinese approach to poverty eradication
Rwanda is the cleanest city in Africa. They are emulating Singapore. Keep out corruption and improve on education.
it is china long culture even during imperial dynasty, king needed to do his duties not because he is king. he got to answer the people and “heaven”, if the king against it, be prepared to be overthrown!
Abandon tribalism and prosperity will follow.
Wow... We Ethiopians and Africans must learn from China's amazing economic reform!

Abandon Tribalism. That's the first step.

Impossible, because your culture does not produce such talent, if you want to change come more foreign students
@@ponyma6304 what do you mean by "your culture does not produce such talents"?
Deng Xiaoping may be the greatest leader ever to walk the planet!

Great documentary of the Life of Deng Xiaoping and transformation of China.
Good documentary. Useful learning.
Mao closed Universities.
How does that raise literacy?
Mao built the foundation, Deng built the house, Xi makes the house beautiful
Deng Xiao Ping was A God gift to China country n its people; Love Chinese......a great country of the world....
Deng said 'Prosperity is only possible with political stability'. I think the US has lost the top spot with its now deeply divided political splits. Excellent in-depth and new insights doco. Stalin and Mao totally kocked-up communism, but Deng with his practical rational approach pulled off the greatest socialist uplifting of people out of poverty. Do have to acknowledge that some left behind or actually suffered, but what socio-economic system does not.
Great efforts by Deng to stamp out the US democrazy influence to maintain the true Chinese democracy they now have in China. Long live China democracy; no poverty, no beggars, no violence, no homelessness in China!
June 4, 1989 was not a massacre. CCP talked to those protesters for 45 days, until a PLA soldier was burned alive, then sent in troops, but still tried to avoid any killing.

And Mao has given China a fairly good rudimentary educational system, which helped Deng's reform by bringing up an entire generation of educated workforce
Today's mainstream narrative separates Mao and Deng's era, Mao is the baddy and messed up everything and Deng is the hero and saved the day, but even Deng admits that his reform can not be successful without development under Mao
Agreed. Plus, Americans will suddenly think Deng Xiaoping is pure evil after hearing he was the leader during the 1989 Tiananmen protests
Mao united China and set up a New China but Mao make a Big Mistake by imposing a Cultural Revolution during the 1960s. That was the Terrible Damage that Mao has caused to China going Backwards again
@@nathanwu6296 With all do respect I understand that the CCP internet minders are well versed about what happened in Tianemen Square, the great leap forward and the cultural revolution and the harvesting of human organs for profit.
Deng was also working for Mao and Deng was the one who solved the starvation, not Mao.
Just bear in mind If Mao did not have dedicated supporters and followers like Deng... etc. Mao could not have achieved the goal of uniting China.
