- President Joe Biden’s stark warning that the world faces the highest prospect of nuclear war in 60 years was not based on any new intelligence about Russian President Vladimir Putin’s intentions or changes in Russia’s nuclear posture, multiple US officials told CNN.
The US still has seen no evidence that Putin is moving toward using Russia’s nuclear capability, nor is there any intelligence showing he’s decided to do so. But Biden’s comments, laid out in starker terms than other US officials have used to date, reflected heightened concerns inside his administration about the risk of Russia carrying out a nuclear strike in Ukraine, where Russian forces have recently faced a string of defeats.

As someone who lived in the Middle East wars i can tell you that’s how suffering starts. 2 governments or parties start bluffing at each other then something bad happens and all wisdom is gone and war starts. The people who will suffer the most are civilians economically mentally and in terms of safety.

I think much of what I’ve seen on this question misses the real danger. The use of nuclear weapons in war has fallen under a taboo that for the first time in the history of warfare, has worked. Nuclear weapons have not been used in anger since 9 August 1945. If it happens again, Pandora’s box is open, and it may come to be seen as just another weapon in a nation’s arsenal.
They were not used in anger, jus for the record. They were used as a measure that absolutely was th alternative to dealing with an all_out last ditch effort by the Japanese, in which tens of thousands of their youth would have been sacrificed and, possibly, similar numbers of allied troops would have been sent in for who knows how long.
Formerly classified has been scoured for decades, by numerous key analysts, and there's damn little argument among those in th know.

American by then was tired of the war and losing interest. More and more US troops were coming home in body bags and the Public’s backing for the war was dropping. The funds from war bonds were also slowing up. The US lost considerably less than japan but they suffered horribly in the process* . Long fighting, rampant PTSD, low morale at certain points, VERY slow advancements, etc.
The US DID NOT want to invade main land Japan. They bombed the literal crap out of major cities even before they dropped the bombs which was basically an atrocity. They wanted to do everything because they knew it would be a blood bath on both ends. They knew almost every single citizen would pick up arms against them. You think the island hopping was bad ? I wish these interviews would talk about the bigger picture: This problem of Putin using nuclear weapons also greatly concerns China, India, and many other nations.

Such a move will wreck the things China cares about most: world markets, trade, China's reputation as a Russian partner, stability and harmony in society (recall they are already having Covid problems and chaos internally), and other problems too, such as fallout raining down and causing panic, food and water hoarding, and so on in China.
India is in a similar boat, and that doesn't begin to talk about the EMP from such an attack, that could extend into EU and NATO nations, poision air and water, and also affect Russia too.
Putin can threaten, but I don't believe China or India will put up with nuclear attacks, as they will suffer.
China does not have that much influence on Putin. If the west is worrying about a nuclear catastrophe, then don’t push Putin into a corner.

A nuke's radiation would also affect neighbouring countries. It would be a de facto declaration of war on Europe, and draw the appropriate response. Presumably, Putin would go thousands of miles away, indifferent to the impact of radiation all along Russia's western flank, and of fallout reaching Moscow, too. He seems to have lost all reason, but it remains to be seen whether the same can be said of his generals.
If the EFFECTS spread to the other countries it counts legally as an attack on those countries too. A chemical or biological weapon could also pollute beyond the border.

Considering his history, I’m surprised at the focus on nuclear forces and not chemical which Putin has used in the past….and been permitted by the world stage to get away with.

This was - is - inevitable. Putin has had nowhere to go for several months and he will not give in and just fade away. The ones with most to lose in the case of a nuclear war will be those who have not had a chance to live. The newborns. The Children. The Adolescents. That younger generation whose aspirations for the future will be suddenly truncated. In contrast, people in their late seventies or eighties have little time left anyway. So a nuclear war would just bring something that they have been seriously contemplating or expecting at any moment-death. Putin himself, and many of his top supporters have already lived their lives. So it's understandable that they view things much differently from those who haven't.

We humans do all we can to get close to catastrophes and then we complain and worry about it. This is who we are the only thing is that we always point fingers to the “bad guy” and they do the same:

Of course when you see the destruction in Ukraine, pride of ownership is the last thing that comes to mind.

Painting a Z on a 1970 tank won’t cover up the rust once the paint is burnt off and it sits in the rain for a week. Just look at your brake disks if you leave your car standing for an few days in the rain.

Sooner or later; Russia's Putin would feel the need to use more stronger weapons since Ukraine is fighting with courage and surviving. Our government has made a major mistake with it's engagement in international affairs. The people of Russia will have to step in to bring peace. I would also remind our government that China is watching the world's response to Putin's invasion of Ukraine. China does have plans to invade Taiwan at some point.
