Even if they were used in retreat, there’s no guarantee where that ash cloud would fall. It’s not like salting the earth out of spite. The radiation would poison Russian territory as well.

This provides a frightening, yet realistic scenario for how a tactical nuke could be used and why Putin might consider them a viable 'tool'.
What's missing here (and understandably so) is speculation about how NATO would respond. I did not hear this mentioned. Therefore, the title should not have mentioned NATO's response.
It seems to me that if the nuke is used to create a barrier between Ukrainian and Russian forces, placed just west of Russia's annexed territories, the response would have to be to use air power and advanced weapons to 'jump' that barrier and destroy Russian personnel and assets supposedly protected by the nuclear barrier

I am not sure how the title represents the content.
I think that nuking the Kherson area as suggested would also have the effect of contaminating Crimea's water supply, not a wise move for Russia. Then again, the last few months have shown that wise moves are not their strong point.

I guess Mike Lyons is a decent person to talk to. I mean....he only served for a few years in the US Army, his only wartime experience was in Gulf War, over thirty years ago. He's been working in the corporate section for the past 20 plus years, not working for the DoD at any point. But yea...sure....he's an expert. But because he has opinions on Twitter and he writes editorials on his opinions must make him an expert on what we might do, considering how he's not in the Pentagon to know that answer. He's not even on the same field as we are and haven't been for a very long time.

Plus, I know him. I’ve read his stuff, and lord knows he writes a lot. However, much of it is WAY off base and not with the current line of thinking or current operations. He’s out of touch because he hasn’t served for THIRTY YEARS and only has 7 years of service.

Another day, another historical event unfolding. Man, kids these days got it rough.
One terrifying possibility to consider is the risk of a rogue officer somewhere along the chain of command launching a tactical weapon if they feel their position is about to be over run by a Ukrainian advance. This, however, is unlikely for the reason of Russian Command not wanting panicked officers launching nuclear weapons. And it's not even clear that there are weapons in forward positions. In fact, the intelligence says that there has been no movement from known nuclear weapons storage sites.
Russian generals have very little power, they fight as field commander hence so many get killed. Launching nukes require Putin himself to authorise.

This is a case that they are discussing things both sides already know. No surprises here.
Territories, which are under shelling and bombs of a native country where children and civilians are dying and suffering for years, could not remain under control and within the borders of the native country any more. If you analyze and take into account the situation in the ex-Yugoslavia regions, as well as many others all around the world , you’ll see that secession and/or split indeed, had occurred. Why would Ukraine be an exception ? Just because of the USA, UK, EU interests in it ?
