      You're right man. The best thing to do if you work on enough brake jobs is spend $100 and get an OTC 6980 rotor and drum puller.

    A good tip is to put your lug nuts back onto the studs before you hit it with a hammer. That way if you tag a stud, it's protected by the lug nut.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад +1

    @compaqs88 Thanks for your input and your comment. I also had someone suggest that you put the wheel back on loosely and move it around to knock the drum loose, I haven't tried it yet but it might save someone from killing a stud.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад +2

    @Therium007 Yes domestics don't often have those holes a swift hit with a hammer between the studs is the standard method of removal in that case. The noise was most likely caused by the brake dust which builds up over time. I include a clean and adjust of the rear brakes during a service for this very reason.

    LMAO the sucking sound off to the distance killed me

    • @stinkycheese804
      @stinkycheese804 9 лет назад

      VexingCode It's not that big of a deal. On most those studs can be pressed or hammered out and a replacement stud costing only $3 can be put in its place. Sometimes you have to pull the bearing first which can be a little extra work but it's just a matter of elbow grease, not hard to get to or anything.

    • @DylanChannel123
      @DylanChannel123 9 лет назад +1

      Stinky Cheese its generally a pain to get it out if you break it and it just creates one more problem

      It's not a bad deal at all, Just take a large hammer and beat it out. This is one of the easier things to fix if you just do it right.

    Just FYI, if the studs are simple to replace when the drum is removed from your rear brakes, simply knock all of the studs through with a hammer and the drum should easily come free. I have done this numerous times. Even on an old 70 pickup that was seized together. Once i knocked the studs through it was like melted butter lol. (leave the lug half on the stud and put a socket on the end and hit it, instead of the stud itself ,so you wont damage the threads or head of the stud. To possibly reuse if the spline is not damaged on on the head of the stud.
    Thanks God Bless

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад +2

    @cantstopmyADD That is an excellent suggestion however on some models it's not possible as there is no access to the adjuster. The next time that happens try cutting the heads off of the hold down pins before removing the drum as it will allow the shoes to rotate so the drum can be removed, hardware kits are cheep and the time this will buy will save you a lot of effort.

  • @DOLRED
    @DOLRED 10 лет назад +3

    That's too easy Eric! When I did this, the process broke the rusted shoe holding pins (That's OK and actually necessary), but then the drum pulled the shoes with it on the way off--bending the shoes outward and disfigured/bent the adjusting rod at the top (Lucky I did not damage the brake cylinder). The adjusting rod is no longer available for my older vehicle, so I had to straighten it in a vise and this was very difficult because you have to hold the threaded end of its yoke in the vise--thus slightly damaging the threads, which is a no no. Punch Line: I took it to a shop and paid Big bucks!! If you do this process, drill out the holding pins on the back plate first and also remove the 2 brake cylinder bolts and pray---or so shown on youtube--I now see.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  12 лет назад

    @StratusCams Yes damage can result in 'severe' situations but to be honest at that point you should probably replace them anyway and if they are a know problem I would machine them on the car to avoid having to deal with that until they didn't have enough meat and needed to be replaced. Thanks for the comment.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  14 лет назад +2

    @Michiganborn1969 The next time you run into that all you have to do is cut the "nail" heads that go to the shoe hold downs on the backing plate. Use the 2 bolt method to pull the drums off. You will have to get a "hardware" kit to replace the pins you cut but this is minor compared to the damage that can be caused by your friends method.

      +Mason Holloway Ya but some times if your brake shoes hang up on the drum and you keep pulling, you break hardware. Can easily be avoided if you unwind adjuster from the back if you can.

    • @Ifyoucantdodgeitramit
      @Ifyoucantdodgeitramit 8 лет назад

      Very true. I see where you're coming from. I chipped my shoes a couple times because I was too rough with it while pulling the drum off.

    • @ThomasXp
      @ThomasXp 5 лет назад

      @tad562 I said if you can. Its pretty rare to not have an access hole to get at the adjuster. Sometimes you have no choice but to remove everything in pieces.

    @jialunjiao That's a tough one for sure. You may need to do the old hammer between the studs for a while to break things loose, I don't like to resort to heat but you may have no choice in the end. You might also try disconnecting the parking brake as that may be the root cause. Good luck.

    Great tip. FYI for anyone working on older cars- I had a 1965 buick where the drums were so worn that the shoes left a groove in the drums. This created a lip on the drums and the brake shoes "self-adjusted" outward so they caught on the lip when I tried to remove them, no matter how hard I banged or even with a drum puller. Someone tipped me to the break adjustment hole on the brake/wheel hub which allowed the break shoes to close up.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @tribulu It's covered in the other brake shoe replacement videos that I've done, you pretty much hit the drum face between the studs to knock it loose.

  • @johnl7131
    @johnl7131 8 лет назад

    Eric, thank you so much for the tip. I looked at the bolt holding my spare tire down on my 2005 Scion, and matched that thread with a couple bolts I had laying around and they fit into the hub perfectly and popped off the hub just like you said.

    @supercellman It's not that I forgot to mention it as you obviously wont' be able to do this without those holes. No worries though because the most common method is to hit the drum between the studs till it comes loose. There is also a special tool called a drum puller that you might be able to borrow from the auto parts store.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @nerdlinger2 I'll start by saying that sometimes cheep parts can screw you so if that is the case you might want to machine your front rotors even if they are new. If your parking brake is inop it would be difficult to isolate if the vibration is coming from front or rear but if you suspect the drums are out of round then you should have them machined as you will not be able to 'see' if they are warped.

    @connerbobby Yes those will work on that car. That bearing is pretty easy so you won't have too much to deal with once you get the drum off, just remove the cap on the hub and then the nut underneath and your good to go. Good luck.

    I want to say thank you for putting this up. my old man and I spent an hour and a half trying to get the drum off his rear passenger side( my stubbornness is from both my parents). When we tried it out, it came loose almost instantly! At that point we had to just walk away for a few minutes, he was pissed that he wasted so much time and I was pissed that I let him waste my time, not hitting him with the hammer instead of the drum and try this trick out immediately. I'm majorly face-palming right now. Again, thanks for the video.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @thepopeis1 You might want to see if you can back off the adjuster as the shoes may be getting caught on a rust ridge on the inside of the drum. If you can't get to it or it won't work then I would cute the 'nail heads' off of the hold downs on the back of the backing plate to allow the shoes to pivot out when you remove the drum, you get new pins with a hardware kit.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @rhigh100 In fact I do, see if there is a rubber plug in the back you can remove to gain access to the adjuster, back the adjuster off as far as you can before trying to remove them. If the adjuster is frozen or you don't have access cut the 'nail heads' off of the hold downs and you should be able to get the drum off. You get new hold downs with a hardware kit which are normally very affordable.

    @ORIONSG77 Your in luck, just yesterday I diagnosed a car with bad wheel cylinders and good shoes. When they come back to get it fixed I'm going to shoot video on replacing the wheel cylinders without removing the shoes (in fact this is the preferred method). I hope to also show how to get wheel cylinders off if the brake line is rusted to the fitting and won't spin without breaking the brake line. In short, yes you can.

  • @ericthecarguy
    @ericthecarguy  13 лет назад

    @MrJed234 You can try hitting it with a hammer between the studs to knock it loose but a viewer pointed out a technique recently that I have yet to try and that is to reinstall the wheel with the lugs finger tight, wiggle the wheel around to help knock it loose. Let me know if this works if you try it.

    @MrPiwo This is really an amendment to the drum brake video. I had a lot of requests for how to get drums off so I offered this one up.

    @Dcarlsonn I mention that in the brake shoe replacement videos, this video was to show an 'alternative' method of getting the drums to come loose. Thanks for your input and for your comment.

    @workwithnature Adjustments can be tricky to get right, if you didn't watch the video I suggest you do as I show some ways to help get the correct adjustment. Tire inflation is important so you can't go wrong there no matter what. Good luck.

    @libertyshot1 It will take some time before I get to that as I got a LOT of email. Your better off posting your question at the ETCG forum or using the search function on my website.

    @massefect942 They actually make a special tool to pull off stubborn drums, you might want to see if you can rent one from your auto parts store.
