To clarify, these are the prayers of consecration in the Tridentine Mass (often called “Latin Mass” or “Traditional Latin Mass”) of the Catholic Church. He whispers because of the sanctity of the prayers he prays and the silence in the church is a time for the assembly to pray and prepare themselves to receive communion. The reason he is reverencing the cup so is because Catholics believe (as Jesus outright states in the Bible) that the communion is the true and literal Body and Blood, and spiritual essence of Christ, who is God.

can you clarify for those who don't know how extraordinary a tridentine mass is in the modern catholic church, and that it is a practice which is attractive to a very small number of ultra traditionalists who like to set themselves apart from the modern church.

Anyway, the Tridentine Mass has become rare in the last 60 years since Vatican II, but to say that it is only attractive to “ultra traditionalists” who want to “splits from the Church” is not true. The loudest are like the latter two, but the Latin mass typically attracts converts and reverts who are looking for something more spiritually engaging than the new mass.
@@Leo413Page check the attendance numbers at Latin Mass parishes and among so called “traditional” Catholics and compare them to mainstream Catholics. As far as Catholics who 1. Go to church and 2. Believe in the real presence, Latin Mass attendees and those who would go to the Latin Mass if they could are no small number.

I myself stopped being a Christian at a certain point in my life, and went through a whole anti religious faze in general, but having matured and come to respect just the divine nature of everything, Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, any faith really, I find a deep comfort in how people can come together and find a way to acknowledge just how small we are in the grand scheme of things.
Such an intimate ritual just gives an idea of how all our ancestors before us, since the beginning, desired to honor how sacred and lucky we are to have ever existed.

Still not making sense. What does it mean, as far the semantic meaning goes, for one to be agnostic but leaning atheist and to describe that as “agnostic/atheist” ? It just doesn’t make sense. Of course, I am not getting into the weeds of one’s personal beliefs. Which I am not here to critique, but what I did good for was a compelling account on what it means to be two opposing, and, by the same virtue, incompatible position on God. Also, I was not suggesting anything really (to your point on him being an ‘agnostic atheist’) what I was doing was, asking is my understanding was correct. That’s a different normative practice. One is, my take, of asking, the other (what you suggested I did) is of asserting. And yes, English is my first language, haha.

Every gesture is full of meaning and gradually worked its way into the ritual over the centuries. Many of the prayers said here go back to the first 5 centuries and have been used by Roman Rite priests at nigh every Mass celebrated until the present day

I’m not a religious person, but I’ve always had an interest in religion, as in learning about the history of them, their belief systems, and the rituals they do. Each religion has their version of God and/or Jesus and different ways of praising them. A good chunk of them have very rocky starts, the start of the Lutheran church and Martian Luther being excommunicated from his own church is a good example, and that fascinates so much.
I often fell asleep during Mass as a kid to the embarrassment of my parents but to be fair! It really is relaxing, lest we're all here for a reason 😂

I havent been to the church in a while, work had me in a choke hold lately... I loved going ever since I was little. There's just something about Sunday mass, it feels like a cleansing after a long week...

Whatever people are around thousands of years from now will either have no knowledge of our society if we expired, or they'll look at these rituals the way we view the Egyptian, Greek, or Aztec gods. Rituals are an important part of the human psyche but religions come and go with each civilisation's rise and fall.

I always gotta wonder where those wafers come from? I know smaller churches will just buy them, but where do the real big, fancy, important churches get theirs? They must have someone to make them, right? I can't imagine the Vatican buying wafers off amazon.

They are made specifically I believe from religious orders. You can't just buy them. And they are never "bought". I believe they are given.

Why are Catholic services always so quiet? Like I'd feel I would get scolded for sneezing. Complete opposite of a Baptist or pentecostal service which can get loud.😂

This is a particular form of Mass. Catholic churches are usually at a more standard volume than this. The typical Catholic Mass is the "novus ordo" mass. There is plenty of talking from the priest, the deacon, and sometimes the church laity. However, there are times of silence for prayer throughout, and it may even be quiet compared to a baptist or pentecostal service.
This is a Missa Privata (Low Mass), typically celebrated by priests on weekdays or by monks in monasteries to fulfill prayer requests. These are conducted without chant and with all prayers merely recited. The Missa Solemnis (Solemn High Mass) is celebrated with a priest, a deacon and a subdeacon, with all readings from Scripture and all major parts of the ordinary (Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Agnus Dei) along with all the propers (Introit, Gradual, Alleluia, Offertory, Communion) chanted by the choir. The Missa Solemnis is more typical of a Sunday celebration or of major feast days.

I remember going to church, many different denominations, Catholic, Christian, etc, and studying it very intently. I remember thinking that same thing - the elaborate coping mechanism. I remember wanting to, at least for myself, change their minds, so to speak... Again not saying you must also. And then various philosophers inspired me to see it much more like @Runescapegal... All is exactly as it should be; Radiohead said it too: "Everything, in its right place." Right where it is. 😊♥️✌️
Kinda hard to call it a coping mechanism when you can see the bible fulfilling itself right before our eyes. The world we live in is very much being controlled by higher, spiritual beings.
